If you've been paying attention to the beer social medias lately, you might have noticed a photo of a Colorado-brewed amber ale making the rounds. It's called Re-Tired and it's a clear homage to the original recipe of New Belgium's Fat Tire. This beer, however, is made by Crooked Stave. Chad Yakobson, the brewery's founder and brewmaster is here for a conversation. He founded Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project 13 years ago and originally it focused around Brettanomyces.  As his official bio points out that his brewing master's thesis was on Brettanomyces and its use in the brewing industry.  “Wanting to spread the wealth of knowledge, Chad published his research as an open-source website to provide a greater understanding of Brettanomyces yeasts for brewers. Focused on strain-specific fermentations and the major compounds produced during pure culture anaerobic fermentation in wort, the application of these yeasts has proliferated throughout the brewing industry.” Wild Wild Brett, where I'll begin the conversation, was a research and development series that really helped drinkers of the time better understand the yeast. But, a changing beer world has it backburnered today.  Still, everything old can be new again, including amber ales. When New Belgium announced it was fundimentally changing its famed fat tire from an amber ale to more of a golden one, many folks were heartbroken, even if they hadn't purchased the beer for some time. Chad walks me through how this homage came to be, and how he never thought Crooked Stave would ever make an Amber ale.  A lot has happened in thirteen years and Chad weaves the story of Crooked Stave and the larger beer industry through the lens of Colorado.  This Episode is Sponsored By:ShopifyShopify's already taken the cash register online, helping millions sell billions around the world. Happy Monday, everybody! This week, Ryan and Alex are trying Sour Rosé by Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project. Founded in Denver, CO in late 2010, Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project is the culmination of brewmaster and “Brettanomyces Guru,” Chad Yakobson’s, open source Master’s Degree research, The Brettanomyces Project. Crooked Stave takes a progressive approach to brewing blends science and art through creativity and passion. The resulting creations, most of which use Brettanomyces yeasts and mature in oak, are beers of extraordinary complexity. From their humble beginnings, they embraced creativity while always striving to make quality their focus. Today they are proud to say they work closely with many of the farmers and skilled craftsmen who produce the ingredients they regularly use. They periodically brew with Colorado floor malted barley as their base malt, they feature Colorado grown hops in various recipes and work meticulously with whole fruit and only whole fruit, most of which is grown in Colorado. This attention to detail and stewardship for the land produces beers of extraordinary quality and is unmistakable in everything they produce. Sour Rose has raspberry sourness upfront with a very distinct tartness, with notable flavors of blueberry, oak, and light wheat. This week on FDB - we're educated in the new qualifications of nannies, discover an immigrant raccoon, learn of a kid VERY impressed by orchestras, and more! Now please kick back, and enjoy another sit down with Friends Drink Beer. Multilingual learners are sitting in most classrooms today. How do we support ELL students’ learning in math, science and social studies while they navigate the language and cultural barriers of their emergent bilingualism? We look at some research on how taking responsibility for our own cultural and linguistic perspective as teachers can help. Later, we discuss another listener recommendation. Sensemaking is an important cognitive process that is subtly distinct from thinking, planning and answering. Understanding the unique process of sensemaking leads to ways we can support it with our students. Season 2, Episode 34 – Natalie DeNicholas joins us for another round as we drink a variety of beers for the great state of Colorado. This week, we’re going full Colorado. Six beers from four great CO breweries. It’s no secret that Colorado is a mecca of craft beer, and this week we’re honing in on some of our favorites.  Colorado Beers We kick off the show with a couple of beers brought to us by friend of the show Enrique Leyva. He recently visited Colorado and brought some beers back for Matt. First up is Prost Brewing Company. Prost has only been on the scene for a few years, but their authentic German brews are spot on and delicious. If you’re ever in Denver for the Great American Beer Festival, you’re sure to see some beer celebs throwing back Pils at Prost. Next up is a Life’s Trade from TRVE Brewing Company, “the most metal fucking brewery ever,” according to Matt. It’s a saison fermented in Puncheons, and it’s awesome. TRVE is a very small operation and they’ve recently announced plans for expansion. Great Divide Brewing Company is next on deck with their 21st Anniversary sour ale. TL;DR we all think it needs more time in the bottle, which will allow the tart character to develop a bit more. We finish the show with two beers from Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project that John has been storing in his cellar for a few years, Bourbon Barrel Cherry Origins, and Nightmare On Brett (Grand Cru). Our love for Crooked Stave runs deep, and these beers only reinforce our devotion. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.
