Hartfield & Co. is the only bourbon distillery to exist in Bourbon County since prohibition. Even though they've been in business for a little over 11 years, Hartfield and Co. recently made a lot of waves in the bourbon community when they released their 9 Year Old Family Reserve Bourbon. With most of the barrels clocking in at over 140 proof, this bourbon sold out instantly and only a handful of groups/store were able to select single barrels of it. Justin's House of Bourbon was one of the stores that selected a single barrel and they recently had a release event for this bottle. After the event concluded, we got to hang with Jeremy Buchanan (CEO/Master Distiller) and Mike Leek (VP of sales) from Hartfield & Co. for an interesting and engaging conversation. If you've ever wondered about Hartfield and Co., then you won't want to miss this episode. You'll get to hear about how this distillery came to be as well as how they approach crafting each of their bourbons. Not only did we taste and comment on the 9 year old family reserve bourbon, but we also tried their pre-prohibition style bourbon as well as their Old Bourbon County brand. As always, we had an excellent time recording with Jeremy and Mike. If you haven't been paying attention to Hartfield and Co., you are definitely going to want to check them out in the future as they are doing some incredible and amazing stuff. This is a wonderful conversation and we hope you enjoy listening about all things Hartfield and Co! --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyTW: https://twitter.com/themashupkyPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!

Sure we were banned from the official media tasting, but we assess the whole group fairly - and find some surprises that are real standouts in the history of BCBS. Also, shenanigans may be afoot at FoBAB in regards to our Fantasy League; Ryan T. and Craig have a proposed wardrobe swap; we discuss BCBS variants that “don't exist”; Tracy shares a Rare Day story that can only lead to bias; we can't help but fondle the box; and we are finally sponsored by Jazz, the style of music. Join us on our latest episode where we talk all things Bourbon County.  Not about the actual county in Kentucky, but about the glorious liquid produced once a year from Goose Island Brewery in the form of their Bourbon County Brand Stout. In this episode we talk about the upcoming releases from the Bourbon County Brand portfolio and we also revisit a past botte, 2015 Rare.  From the Bourbon County website, Back in 1979 the folks at Heaven Hill Distilleries filled a handful of new freshly charred American white oak barrels with some of their finest whiskey. It is rare for Bourbon to age in barrels for more than twenty-three years. But these barrels patiently sat for over thirty years. The extra years developed a distinct and complex character that makes them truly one-of-a kind. We filled those barrels with Bourbon County Brand Stout, and then stored them away in our Chicago Barrel House to age for two more years. With these rare barrels from our friends at Heaven Hill we believe this is one of the finest beers we have ever produced. This is Goose Island Rare Bourbon County Brand Stout for 2015Is 2015 Rare still holding up?  it worth it?  What are our thoughts on the newest releases coming Black Friday?  Only one way to find out...https://www.gooseisland.com/bourbon-county-brand-stouthttps://untappd.com/b/goose-island-beer-co-rare-bourbon-county-brand-stout-2015/1230311#newrelease #craftbeerreview #gooseisland #bourboncounty #beer #bourbon #whiskey #drinkreview #podcast #isitworthit #arsenicculture https://www.youtube.com/@arsenicculturehttps://instagram.com/arsenicculturehttps://tiktok.com/@arsenicculturehttps://www.facebook.com/arsenicculture/https://x.com/arseniccultureBourbon County 2024: Anticipating The New, Enjoying The Old-E89https://www.youtube.com/@arsenicculturehttps://instagram.com/arsenicculturehttps://tiktok.com/@arsenicculturehttps://www.facebook.com/arsenicculture/https://x.com/arsenicculture

Man oh man i'm so excited to bring this episode to y'all. Today we have Jason with Still Austin Whiskey. We had a great conversation about the brand and the spirit. Lets get into it. Have you checked out our sponsors yet. Badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/aff=3 https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== Patreon.com/the_whiskeyshaman Stillaustinwhiskey.com It all started in 2012.  Cleveland Seals was looking for a post-retirement project to occupy his time and had the wild idea to start a whiskey distillery.  Cleveland shared his dream with his son, Chris, and asked for his help. Chris —a longtime economist and risk manager— knew all too well how difficult it would be to bring his Dad's dream to life.  Looking at the risks, Chris thought that the chances of success were pretty low, but he liked the idea of spending time with his dad, so he suggested to Cleveland that they do a “feasibility study.”  The supposed “study” would ostensibly determine the chances of success in starting an Austin-based whiskey distillery, but secretly, Chris's real plan was just to spend time with his dad, get him settled into retirement, and after having a lot of fun, decide not to actually do it. Over the course of the next year, that is exactly what Cleveland and Chris did. The two traveled together, visited whiskey distilleries, and had a lot of fun drinking whiskey together. Prior to this “study” the father-son duo rarely talked with one another, but they soon found themselves talking every day.  And not just talking about business.  After a few whiskeys they were talking about everything -- even their feelings!  As Chris says, “it was the best thing that ever happened to me and my dad.” Then, as fate should have it, in 2013 state laws in Texas changed.  The changes made it easier to open a craft Bourbon distillery in Texas, and also made it likely that a Texas Whiskey category would emerge.  Having devoted a year to studying the market, the two realized they just might be at the right place at the right time.  They assembled a team of local farmers, whiskey experts, local artists, and crazy co-conspirators — and together with the support of their whole community, Still Austin Whiskey Co was born.   The distillery broke ground in 2014 and began distilling in 2017 (yes, it took three years to build this special distillery).  In 2020, Still Austin's first straight bourbon whiskey was released.  Over the past decade, Cleveland and Chris discovered the power of believing in a special future - especially for someone you love.  Cleveland's dream came to life as an authentic Texas whiskey, made from grain to glass in Austin, Texas.  Together we make whiskey for everyone: the musicians, the visionaries, the lovers, the scientists, the oddballs, the artists, and the everyday dreamers.   Everybody knows that really great whiskey HAS to come from Kentucky, right? And everybody knows bourbon HAS to come from Bourbon County, right? Right? Everybody is wrong. The truth is great whiskey can come from anywhere, and great bourbon can come from anywhere in the United States (as long as you follow the rules). Dozens of fantastic whiskeys have popped up over the last few years from all over the world, even from places as far away from the U.S. as Australia. As whiskey making has grown more popular, people from all over the world have learned how to make great whiskey, and Texas is leading the way.

The founding of a town can have interesting stories, behind it The founding of Brooklyn, Illinois,  is one such story.  Legend has it that Brooklyn developed as a Black settlement, an asylum, and within the Underground Railroad system. Just press play to hear the whole story. ——— Click on search links to see if there are episodes with related content: Cicely Hunter, Black History, Civil Rights,  Podcast Transcript: I'm Cicely Hunter, Public Historian from the Missouri Historical Society, and here's history, on eighty-eight-one, KDHX. ——— Stories of agency, courage, strength, and resilience were told as oral history traditions passed down from generation to generation within Black communities. It is through these stories that many forebearers instructed Black Americans about their lineage, life lessons, and mapping a path forward. The history of Brooklyn, Illinois, incorporates this oral tradition. ——— Brooklyn's story revolves around Priscilla Baltimore, often referred to as Mother Baltimore, who was born into slavery around 1805 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. She was sold off by her enslaver (her biological father) and sold several more times before purchasing her freedom for about $1,100. According to lore, she continued to liberate her family, first her mother and then her second husband, John Tobias Baltimore, by mortgaging her property in St. Louis. ——— Despite the punitive Black codes adopted by Illinois in 1819, which were designed to suppress economic, social, and political power for self-emancipated and free Black individuals, the state was a destination for Black people fleeing Missouri. In 1829, 11 families left Missouri for Illinois with Priscilla and John Baltimore as their leaders. ——— Legend has it that Brooklyn developed as a Black settlement, an asylum, and within the Underground Railroad system. The principles of family and religion were their foundation, and it was through God's power that they were liberated during the antislavery movement. ——— Priscilla Baltimore died in 1882 and many details about her life as a beloved and revered figure within the community appeared in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. Along with John Berry Meachum, Mary Meachum, Moses Dickson, and many other pioneers that paved the way for Black liberation in the previous centuries, it's important for us to keep the oral history about Priscilla and John Baltimore within St. Louis regional history. ——— For more information about St. Louis Black history, please visit our website mohistory.org/aahi.
