If you've been paying attention to the beer social medias lately, you might have noticed a photo of a Colorado-brewed amber ale making the rounds. It's called Re-Tired and it's a clear homage to the original recipe of New Belgium's Fat Tire. This beer, however, is made by Crooked Stave. Chad Yakobson, the brewery's founder and brewmaster is here for a conversation. He founded Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project 13 years ago and originally it focused around Brettanomyces.  As his official bio points out that his brewing master's thesis was on Brettanomyces and its use in the brewing industry.  “Wanting to spread the wealth of knowledge, Chad published his research as an open-source website to provide a greater understanding of Brettanomyces yeasts for brewers. Focused on strain-specific fermentations and the major compounds produced during pure culture anaerobic fermentation in wort, the application of these yeasts has proliferated throughout the brewing industry.” Wild Wild Brett, where I'll begin the conversation, was a research and development series that really helped drinkers of the time better understand the yeast. But, a changing beer world has it backburnered today.  Still, everything old can be new again, including amber ales. When New Belgium announced it was fundimentally changing its famed fat tire from an amber ale to more of a golden one, many folks were heartbroken, even if they hadn't purchased the beer for some time. Chad walks me through how this homage came to be, and how he never thought Crooked Stave would ever make an Amber ale.  A lot has happened in thirteen years and Chad weaves the story of Crooked Stave and the larger beer industry through the lens of Colorado.  This Episode is Sponsored By:ShopifyShopify's already taken the cash register online, helping millions sell billions around the world. Craft beer is always on fire for April Fools.  I have to admit, not a fan.  But Brian is, so he made a Twitter thread with as many as he could find.  Ham beer, dried beer, exxxtra long cans.  But then you have the ones that are supposed to be jokes, but actually exist.  Pickle beer and cucumber Kolsch?  Come on, Y'all gotta give it more than that.It was a spicy week for Bud Light after their partnership with a trans rights activist.  Kid Rock broke out the guns and a lot of folks dumped their Bud for Coors Light, which probably didn't work out as well as they thought. We reminisce about last weekend and our first trip to a biergarten Kolsch service at Halfway Crooks.  If you've never been to a good Kolsch service, you should change that.Guinness is making big moves.  Baltimore brewery is closing, and Chicago brewery is coming soon.  Sounds expensive.  But NA is doing OK.  Our friends at Athletic Brewing continue to grow and are on track to be a Top 15 brewery. Is it beer healthy?  That's one of those questions that will always be debated.  We talk about a couple articles with conflicting opinions.  And I'm sure we'll have more opportunity to do the same in the future. All this beer drinking and so little recycling.  Turns out many beer labels make cans un-recyclable.  How do we fix this one? We'll be back in the studio next week for our final radio broadcast then it's off to Little Beer Fest for a remote broadcast before we go podcast only.  It's gonna be a busy few weeks over here. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! The last time I was in Colorado was for the Great American Beer Fest back in 2016.  I know how much Georgia's craft beer scene has changed since then and no doubt it's the same for Colorado.  Outside of the festival we visited awesome spots like Mockery, Trve, Crooked Stave, Great Divide and a few more.  I need to get another visit soon to try some of the stuff I missed last time.Jagged Mountain's Chad Bratt and Executive Director of the Colorado Brewers Guild Shawnee Adelson  join us on the show this week.  We learn about the challenges facing Colorado's brewers and a couple of fun events like the recent Collaboration Fest and upcoming Colorado Pint Day, and protecting good beer laws. The Beer ListOf course we have some Colorado beers on deck with Weldwerks Juicy Bits IPA and Odyssey Beer Works I'm Not Dead Vienna lager. We got some sad news this week that one of our favorite local spots Orpheus Brewing is closing it's taproom.  We opened their The Bridge (Wild Ale with botanicals) to mourn the loss. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Nobody enjoys paying full price- who doesn't like scoring a sweet deal?! Yet many of us don't think to do what it takes to pay less for the things that we buy. Whether it's the fear of rejection or not wanting to be perceived as a cheapskate, there are a number of false narratives at play that are keeping us from pouncing on discounts. And it's important to simultaneously keep in mind that, in the words of Michelle Singletary, “discounts make us dumb!” In the quest to pay less, it's important to not fall victim to the ploys of marketers and advertising! We discuss all of these patterns of thinking, as well as the steps that we need to take in order to ensure that we're getting the absolute best deal on almost everything. They have been putting out amazing IPAs and stouts for the past few years. Lately they've been dipping their toes into other styles. Bat Cat is a black IPA, so not too far outside their wheelhouse but definitely something different.

In this episode we have the honor of speaking with Richard Cordray, who served for six years as the first Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, or CFPB. Since his time at the CFPB, he has written a book, WATCHDOG: How Protecting Consumers Can Save Our Families, Our Economy, and Our Democracy. In his book, Richard shares stories of individual consumers in order to show how the Bureau quickly became a powerful force for good. WATCHDOG tells a hopeful story of how our system can be reformed by putting government back on the side of the people. And we don’t just stop at government help, we also dive into how we as individual consumers can take steps to remain vigilant, especially during this modern pandemic. Many of us have been stuck at home with extra time on our hands due to the quarantine. Even if your state or local government hasn’t made it an official order, it’s likely you’ve found yourself trying to figure out what to do with these free nights and weekends! And while we wouldn’t suggest that you must use all that additional time to work on your personal finances, it would helpful to use at least some of it to work on some money matters that typically get swept under the rug. So in this episode we’re talking about the chorelike, everyday money disciplines that are often skipped over. Happy Monday, everybody! This week, Ryan and Alex are trying Sour Rosé by Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project. Founded in Denver, CO in late 2010, Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project is the culmination of brewmaster and “Brettanomyces Guru,” Chad Yakobson’s, open source Master’s Degree research, The Brettanomyces Project. Crooked Stave takes a progressive approach to brewing blends science and art through creativity and passion. The resulting creations, most of which use Brettanomyces yeasts and mature in oak, are beers of extraordinary complexity. From their humble beginnings, they embraced creativity while always striving to make quality their focus. Today they are proud to say they work closely with many of the farmers and skilled craftsmen who produce the ingredients they regularly use. They periodically brew with Colorado floor malted barley as their base malt, they feature Colorado grown hops in various recipes and work meticulously with whole fruit and only whole fruit, most of which is grown in Colorado. This attention to detail and stewardship for the land produces beers of extraordinary quality and is unmistakable in everything they produce. Sour Rose has raspberry sourness upfront with a very distinct tartness, with notable flavors of blueberry, oak, and light wheat. This week on FDB - we're educated in the new qualifications of nannies, discover an immigrant raccoon, learn of a kid VERY impressed by orchestras, and more! When Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project founder and brewmaster Chad Yakobson published his master's thesis online as The Brettanomyces Project very little was known about brewing with this unusual yeast.  Common knowledge at the time said you couldn't use Brett as a primary fermenter in beer.  Yakobson wasn't buying that and set on a path to find out all he could about this fascinating funk factory.  Ten years later, brewers know a lot more, in large part thanks to his research.  There is a huge variety of beers using Brett both as the primary fermenter and in blends. We're joined this week by Yakobson and brewhouse and cellar manager Troy Montrone to learn more about brewing with Brett.  Montrone tells us what a cellarman's main job duties are (lots of cleaning) and the importance of barrels and other wood vessels in their brewing.  We discuss the differences in Belgian and American sour beers, and Yakobson shares a few flavor descriptors he thinks we need to drop from our vocabulary. From his pioneering masters thesis on fermenting with Brettanomyces to his current role running a 10,000 BBL per year brewery and artisan-focused craft distributorship in Denver, Colorado, Chad Yakobson has made his mark on the world of brewing. In this conversation with Jamie Bogner, he discusses his early days of Brett research, myths about mixed culture fermentations, the brewhouse feedback loop with sensory and lab components that work in sync, the importance of water chemistry on beer color, optimizing brewhouse processes to improve the longevity and shelf stability of beer, shaping acidity with hops in mixed culture beers, and more. “Craft beer for so long has been a muscle flexing contest,” says Yakobson. “Sour beer is not meant to be aggressive. This is not the sour arms race. Nobody wants the most sour beer—that’s gross. We want to make the most complex beer.”

We have a big, dumb, action movie for you, though, that we spend plenty of time with… even more time than we spend on James Bond related rabbit hole diving... or beer stories, even…. It might be a close call between the feature film and movie trailers. We're not perfect. This week’s conversation is potentially one of the most enjoyable and insightful conversations I’ve had since I started working in beer. I spend a lot of my time chatting to brewers and bar owners, but never have I taken the time to pose questions to someone who works in the world of beer distribution. I’ve known Pete Brissenden from back when he worked for London’s Meantime brewery, way before SAB Miller and subsequently Asahi bought it out. Pete’s worked for a range of breweries over the years, from the very traditional Hopdaemon in Kent to Camden Town Brewery in its formative years.  These days he works for The Bottle Shop, a London based distributor and retailer that specializes in wholesaling craft beer. What differentiates The Bottle Shop from other British beer distributors is that 50% of its business is based on imports. In the UK The Bottle Shop is working with cutting edge breweries such as Beavertown and Cloudwater. While at the same time bringing in beers to the UK from the likes of Green Flash, Crooked Stave, Alpine and many more.  During this discussion Pete and I cover topics ranging from pricing, to the viability of imports in a post-Brexit UK economy to the health of the cask ale market here in the UK. We also dig into his history at Camden and Meantime a little, including Pete’s reaction to the latters sale to SAB Miller while he was still working there.

This was our first time recording since the tragic Pulse shooting in Orlando. We encourage our US listeners to share their thoughts with their elected representatives. You can find yours and their contact info here. 00:00:00 - We begin this week by talking about some literal bridge building. Because of things like physics and geology, engineers have to rethink how we build roads around bridges. Joe assumes Ryan and Abe know about soil science. He's wrong. But some researchers at the University of Texas, Arlington, have developed special giant foam blocks to help solve the bridge settling dilemma. All rivers in this segment referred to as Kwai for clarity.  00:21:45 - Drinks, like bridges, get you where you're going. Abe pops the top off a Hop Savant from Crooked Stave. Ryan, thinking back on his afternoon at Corvus Coffee Roasters with Abe, has a Cold Brew IPA from Rogue. Joe B. bucks tradition with a Best Damn Cherry Cola, which while it may not sound like it, is actually an alcoholic beverage. It's not his first time having booze on the show, but it is rare. This leads to a discussion of choosing one's science specialty.  00:29:31 - UPDATES. How often do you actually see follow-up reporting in science journalism? For us, it's rarely. To put our money where our mouth is here is some that. First, Abe is excited to announce that the newly discovered elements first discussed in episode 234 now have names! Next, that weird animal we talked about in episode 229 has finally found a place on the family tree of life (open access paper here), welcome to club Siphonophorae, buddy. 00:48:04 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like updates in that sometimes they really are just updates. Joe starts off complaining about vocal plosives with a new recurring donation from Pedro P. in Chile. Muchas gracias, Pedro! Ryan has an e-mail from frequent correspondent Tyler V., who corrects him about what Einstein won his Nobel prize for in episode 196. Abe finishes things up with an iTunes review, the final review from the Summer Solstice iTunes Review Challenge written by Cynthia. You can also go check out an interview with Joe on the Baja SAE Shop Talk podcast.  Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts! Season 2, Episode 34 – Natalie DeNicholas joins us for another round as we drink a variety of beers for the great state of Colorado. This week, we’re going full Colorado. Six beers from four great CO breweries. It’s no secret that Colorado is a mecca of craft beer, and this week we’re honing in on some of our favorites.  Colorado Beers We kick off the show with a couple of beers brought to us by friend of the show Enrique Leyva. He recently visited Colorado and brought some beers back for Matt. First up is Prost Brewing Company. Prost has only been on the scene for a few years, but their authentic German brews are spot on and delicious. If you’re ever in Denver for the Great American Beer Festival, you’re sure to see some beer celebs throwing back Pils at Prost. Next up is a Life’s Trade from TRVE Brewing Company, “the most metal fucking brewery ever,” according to Matt. It’s a saison fermented in Puncheons, and it’s awesome. TRVE is a very small operation and they’ve recently announced plans for expansion. Great Divide Brewing Company is next on deck with their 21st Anniversary sour ale. TL;DR we all think it needs more time in the bottle, which will allow the tart character to develop a bit more. We finish the show with two beers from Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project that John has been storing in his cellar for a few years, Bourbon Barrel Cherry Origins, and Nightmare On Brett (Grand Cru). Our love for Crooked Stave runs deep, and these beers only reinforce our devotion. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Season 2, Episode 31 – This week, we’re drinking a variety of Belgian-style ales because why the hell not. It truly is a great time in craft beer. The beers are this week’s show exemplify it. Crooked Stave, Jester King, Highland Park Brewery…damn.  We kick off the show with two beers from one of Los Angeles’ newest breweries, Highland Park Brewery. Highland Park is a local favorite of ours, and rightly so. They’re located near Eagle Rock Brewing and Golden Road Brewing Company, so making a trip so the somewhat out of the way brewery and tasting room at HP is well worthwhile.  Assorted Dope-Ass Brews Next up is the 2015 LA Beer Week collaboration beer, Unity. Unity was brewed at Smog City Brewing in Torrance, CA in collaboration with other local Los Angeles breweries. We also spend a bit of time talking about LA Beer Week’s Kickoff Celebration that Jason and Matt attended back in June. The final beer is a collaboration between Crooked Stave, Jester King, and Swiss brewery Brasserie Trois Dames. Matt randomly found this beer at a local shop near The Bruery, so of course, he bought it. I mean, you can’t go wrong, right?
