Ancient Greek soldier in a phalanx

Episode 99: Sean Stewart and (a) The Greek Hoplite Phalanx: The Iconic Heavy Infantry of the Classical Greek World by Richard Taylor & (b) Living Latin: Everyday Language and Popular Culture by Charlie Kerrigan ABOUT SEAN Sean Stewart is a seasoned historian, leadership consultant, and business trainer. With over 30 years of experience in studying and working in the history field, Sean's multifaceted expertise in history, sailing, and storytelling enables him to connect people with our shared human experience across millennia. Sean has been dedicated to unveiling the power of history to transform our present perspectives and inspire positive change. As a historical leadership excellence expert, he guides managers into becoming effective leaders by leveraging the lessons of the past. Sean's use of artifacts and compelling narratives serves as a powerful tool to illuminate history and shape cohesive, high-performing teams. CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS When it comes to the issues we have, you can learn that (1) we've been here before and (2) you're not alone. Infusing ancient artifacts with essential leadership lessons An artifact in view is a lesson in view. "A Silent Coach." Leadership acting as a service. A leadership example from the 19th century Bobby/London Police Whistle. The power of going to find the story. Making what you learn relevant for others. Human Interaction & Understanding --> Overcomplicating Everything vs. Going Back To Basics Why we shouldn't write off the people -- or the stories -- of 98% of us who came before modern society as we know it. The two level of how you enrich yourself by extracting modern lessons from ancient history. What would you write on your own epitaph? "Act now so you deserve your own epitaph later." "We need in the modern world a built-in structure where we give people the chance to take a breath and we don't have that anymore." "What connects us to antiquity or the Middle Ages is more than what separates us." Why the word "history" should be a verb rather than a noun. "Uncertainty is where leadership lives." The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Sean is, How do you utilize the stories of your past -- and history, overall -- to shape your approach to your work, life, and leadership? This is a teaser of the bonus episode, The Recovery of Writing found over on Patreon. How wars were fought on the Greek mainland would go through a period of change and evolution, much like many other areas of culture. This would see the heavily armoured aristocratic warriors of the Bronze Age, riding their chariots into battle fade from history. As the Bronze Age moved into the dark ages and then into the Archaic period, how the Greeks fought would change dramatically, with these changes appearing to be tied with the political and social structures of the societies. We would end up seeing a new type of fighter emerge, that of the Hoplite, who unlike the warriors of the Bronze Age, was a solider part of a formation much larger and important than the individual. In this episode we will look at this change in warfare along with the emergence of the Hoplite and attempt to understand why and how they came about. If you would like to hear more and support the series click on the Patreon link at the bottom of the page or you can head to my website to discover other ways to support the series, HereNew bonus episodes and series updates come out in the first week of every month, Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/castingthroughancientgreece)

EPISODE 23 : HOPLITES AND THE SPARTAN WAR MACHINEThis time around folks it is my great honour to have Professor Paul Bardunias as my guest on the show. Paul is a co-author of the book 'Hoplites at War: A comprehensive analysis of heavy infantry combat in the Greek world - 750 to 100 BCE.Fittingly we discuss just that, developing the concept of Hoplite warfare in Greece from its advent in the mid-8th century through to the eve of the Persian wars. Paul takes us through his 3 fundamentals of war during this time period: the men, the tools and the group. Painting a detailed picture of hoplite traditions, arms, armour and tactics for both the non-Spartan and Spartan warriors during the period. We finish with a mock battle between Spartans and Argive troops to get a feel for two armies at war on the plains of the Peloponnese. I hope you all enjoy, and take good care.https://www.spartanhistorypodcast.com/https://www.facebook.com/spartanhistorypodcasthttps://twitter.com/spartan_history

What can I say about tonight's guest? Theis Protov's mind doesn't work like yours or mine. Theis is a perfect example of thinking outside the box. His genuine innovation in the firearms industry is nothing short of ground breaking. We cover a ton of those things but there's even more that are still under wraps until the right time. Hoplite Arms' business model should be the industry standard but sadly, is the exception. I really think the ballistic and firearm enthusiasts are really going to enjoy geeking out over what Hoplite has done and what they're going to do. Thanks for listening and supporting the show. Dont forget to comment, like, rate 5 stars, and share the podcast!
The Mandalorian is pretty unique in that he keeps his face hidden almost the whole time. This is very rare in TV and movies, the rule is that we HAVE to see the actor's face, so they rarely even keep on hats let alone remain fully masked! Yes, there are examples of it but they're few and far between. It's very cool that they've allowed the character to remain hidden for most of the show and he's much cooler for it because it allows the audience to fill in what he really looks like or just imagine him as a cool faceless avatar of awesome. We chat about the coolness of masked characters. There are many in the Star Wars universe: Bobba Fet, Darth Vader, even the storm Troopers but not so many elsewhere. What makes them cool? How do we recognise them as human, robots, or aliens? We can somehow tell the difference. The Mandalorian's style of masked helmet has its roots in antiquity: it's inspired by the Greek Corinthian style Hoplite helmet, one of the Mandalorians even has a helmet that specifically references that style. The Corinthian war helmet lends the wearers that same type of cool anonymity, you can just imagine the effect they would have had on opponents 2700 years ago! The Roman gladiator Murmillo helmets even more so. This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Way Out There - Are you ready? Despite being very much the textbook Classical era warrior, Hoplites often suffer from being the baseline 'man with sharp stick' troop-type who's battlefield capabilities underpin a vast array of far more interestingly-armed and equipped infantrymen in the troop-type taxonomy of ADLG, and indeed in many other previous rulesets as well. This ADLG Listbuilding Podcast seeks to pan for gold amongst the broken pottery shards of Greek military history, and in so doing possibly tease out a few different ways of cooking up interesting and viable Hoplite-led army lists to use when playing ADLG in the Classical era. Regular contributors Dave & Richard are here to take up the challenge as we set ourselves the task of building an array of different lists, all featuring a minimum of 12 Classical-era Hoplites, as well as discussing a bit of the history (real and "ancients-gaming") of the archetypal Hellenistic warrior. This video is also available as a Video podcast (with pictures of figures) on the Madaxeman YouTube Channel. (Museum Miniatures 15mm Hoplites from the Madaxeman Photo Gallery)
At the sound of galloping horses, the bandit killer drew his ivory handled colt. It was good for 6 shots and - while there were only three bandits - they were riding hard and fast and straight at him. Conditions that don’t necessarily enhance one’s ability to shoot calmly and accurately. Strangely enough, even as the bullets began to crack past the bandit killer’s face, he remained calm. Remarkably calm for such a young officer engaged in his first fight. But he really wasn’t all that young. And this wasn’t his first fight, not really. On this latest episode of Bloody Beaver Podcast, I share the story of a legendary soldier, one who cut his teeth at the tail end of the wild west. But if you were to hear him tell it, he got his start much MUCH earlier than that. While your here, check out my website! For further reading on this episode’s topic: https://truewestmagazine.com/pattons-first-two-notches/ https://warfarehistorynetwork.com/2015/05/11/how-george-s-patton-vanquished-pancho-villas-lieutenants/ Through the travail of the ages, Midst the pomp and toil of war, I have fought and strove and perished Countless times upon this star. In the form of many people In all panoplies of time Have I seen the luring vision Of the Victory Maid, sublime. I have battled for fresh mammoth, I have warred for pastures new, I have listened to the whispers When the race trek instinct grew. I have known the call to battle In each changeless changing shape From the high souled voice of conscience To the beastly lust for rape. I have sinned and I have suffered, Played the hero and the knave; Fought for belly, shame, or country, And for each have found a grave. I cannot name my battles For the visions are not clear, Yet, I see the twisted faces And I feel the rending spear. Perhaps I stabbed our Savior In His sacred helpless side. Yet, I’ve called His name in blessing When in after times I died. In the dimness of the shadows Where we hairy heathens warred, I can taste in thought the lifeblood; We used teeth before the sword. While in later clearer vision I can sense the coppery sweat, Feel the pikes grow wet and slippery When our Phalanx, Cyrus met. Hear the rattle of the harness Where the Persian darts bounced clear, See their chariots wheel in panic From the Hoplite’s leveled spear. See the goal grow monthly longer, Reaching for the walls of Tyre. Hear the crash of tons of granite, Smell the quenchless eastern fire. Still more clearly as a Roman, Can I see the Legion close, As our third rank moved in forward And the short sword found our foes. Once again I feel the anguish Of that blistering treeless plain When the Parthian showered death bolts, And our discipline was in vain. I remember all the suffering Of those arrows in my neck. Yet, I stabbed a grinning savage As I died upon my back. Once again I smell the heat sparks When my Flemish plate gave way And the lance ripped through my entrails As on Crecy’s field I lay. In the windless, blinding stillness Of the glittering tropic sea I can see the bubbles rising Where we set the captives free. Midst the spume of half a tempest I have heard the bulwarks go When the crashing, point blank round shot Sent destruction to our foe. I have fought with gun and cutlass On the red and slippery deck With all Hell aflame within me And a rope around my neck. And still later as a General Have I galloped with Murat When we laughed at death and numbers Trusting in the Emperor’s Star. Till at last our star faded, And we shouted to our doom Where the sunken road of Ohein Closed us in its quivering gloom. So but now with Tanks a’clatter Have I waddled on the foe Belching death at twenty paces, By the star shell’s ghastly glow. So as through a glass, and darkly The age long strife I see Where I fought in many guises, Many names, but always me. And I see not in my blindness What the objects were I wrought, But as God rules o’er our bickerings It was through His will I fought. So forever in the future, Shall I battle as of yore, Dying to be born a fighter, But to die again, once more.

In both Romans 13:12 and Ephesians 6:10, 13 St. Paul encourages us to put on the "armor" or "hopla" of God, which is Christ, and become Christians Hoplite soldiers.
We are once more between issues of the magazine, so running with a random ancient warfare topic, the one that has been pulled out of the hat for this episode is ‘spartan invincibility’. We have a full house for this episode with Jasper Oorthuys, Murray Dahm, Mark McCaffery, Marc DeSantis, Lindsay Powell and Myke Cole.
Episode IEpisode Title: Introduction to RidgeviewIn this episode, Mr. Anderson explores Ridgeview’s history, introduces listeners to what it is that makes a charter school different, and talks with Mr. Herndon, a veteran Ridgeview history teacher, about the sorts of things that make up the Ridgeview experience.

We were casting around for a topic between ourselves, another film? A piece of kit? Murray suggested we discuss trying to simulated the ancient battlefield. We look at table top games, computer games and re-enactment. Its a big thank you to those who sent in questions, its really appreciated and it does help guide out conversation.
In the final podcast of the year we find ourselves between issues of the magazine so Mark suggested the title ‘300 vs the real Hoplite’. The gang are joined by Paul Bardunias author of ‘Hoplites at War: A Comprehensive Analysis of Heavy Infantry Combat in the Greek World, 750-100 bc’.
For this second episode, we decided to remain close to home. Since we've all been involved in research concerning ancient Greek warfare, it was natural to get together and talk about that most popular of ancient warriors: the ancient Greek hoplite. Josho Brouwers, Joshua R. Hall, and Roel Konijnendijk are joined by archaeologist Matthew Lloyd and ancient historian Owen Rees. They focus mostly on issues of definition, as well as socio-economic and cultural aspects of the hoplite, rather than tactics, although they do briefly discuss the phalanx.

"Once people began to live in settled villages, they started to identify themselves not just based on their language and culture, but also on where they lived. Farmers became, to a lesser or larger extent, tied to the soil. As villages grew into cities and cities became the centres of larger city-states, kingdoms, and even empires, it became ever more important to define territories in a visible way, and to defend them whenever necessary." We're discussing Ancient Warfare Magazine volume X, issue Wars at the edge of empires. In this episode, we discuss the revolutionary changes in warfare that took place in the 8th and 7th centuries BC that were strictly Greek and reflect the abstract nature of the polis; the type of armor worn and weaponry employed by a typical hoplite; the organization and training of military forces; their application of tactics in a typical battle sequence; the cultic practices of the bloodlust god, Ares, who personifies the grim and horrific aspects of warfare; and the Lelantine War, the first large-scale war on the Greek record after the mythical Trojan War and the first instance in which these military changes were employed Show Notes: http://www.thehistoryofancientgreece.com/2016/07/013-hoplite-warfare.html
