Clare Patey (@clarepatey) is an artist and the director of the Empathy Museum (@empathymuseum). In her work, she takes abstract ideas about our society and makes them tangible to ordinary people. This is especially true of her latest exhibition, A Mile in My Shoes, where visitors take a walk in the shoes of a migrant or refugee as they listen to the owner tell them a story about their life. Later this year, it will tour the Brexit heartlands. ‘You don’t have to share the same experience,’ says Clare, ‘but you can share the same humanity as someone.’ She and Aaron (@aaronhughellis) also discuss why she isn’t proud of the fact that she doesn’t know any Brexit supporters, as well as her fondness for Chekhov and ‘In Bruges’... It’s become something of a mantra for the Tech On Politics team, but there is no doubt we’re living in interesting political times. Last year, Brits voted to leave the EU, populist movements and candidates were on the rise, and US President Trump continues to whip the news media into a daily frenzy. So what does this mean for our current political systems and what role is technology playing in the democratic protest? In the final episode of season 1, Tech On Politics sit down with Steve Hilton. A former strategist and senior advisor to UK’s former Prime Minister David Cameron, Hilton now bases himself in America where he’s worked as an Stanford professor, authored the book ‘More Human: Designing a World Where People Come First’, and founded CrowdPac, a platform which makes it easy to crowdfund and run for public office. Tom and Steve talk political campaigning, why Steve firmly believes that Brexit has been a long time coming, how it was a win for democracy and just how much of that is rooted not just in technological advancements but in an underlying apathy for the current political party system and voting processes. Via Crowdpac, Steve believes in democratizing the political process and putting the power directly in the people’s hands. Can populism be spun positively via technological transparency? Join us for an action packed finale of the first season of Tech on Politics.

Crowdpac CEO Steve Hilton talks with Recode’s Kara Swisher about how his website is making it easier for anyone to explore running for office and to collect donations for political causes and campaigns. Hilton, a former advisor to British Prime Minister David Cameron, says the need to raise money “underpins a huge proportion of what’s wrong with politics,” and wants more diverse voices in the fray. A supporter of both Brexit and candidate Trump, he says the U.S. president needs to stop listening to Republicans in Congress and focus on “positive populism” — meaning solutions to the anxiety over jobs and the economic growth that helped Trump beat Hillary Clinton. Previously a senior editor at the New Republic he has also written for the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and The Atlantic. He has been featured throughout the media, including appearances on NPR, MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, HBO, The Colbert Report, Talk of the Nation, C-Span, Hardball, and on talk radio in every major city in America. In his new book AUDACITY, HOW BARACK OBAMA DEFIED HIS CRITICS AND CREATED A LEGACY THAT WILL PREVAIL, Chait makes the argument that most of Obama's achievements will not only survive a Trump administration, but also the judgment of time, which will proclaim that Obama was among the greatest and most effective presidents in American history.Steve Hilton has been called many things and one is the Steve Jobs of politics. The T-Shirt clad Hilton is one of UK's most known political figures. As former Prime Minister Cameron's senior adviser, he remade the Tory party into a modern, winning conservative party. Now Hilton has his eyes set on America's political system. In MORE HUMAN: DESIGNING A WORLD WHERE PEOPLE COME FIRST, Hilton posits that government, business, the lives we lead, the food we eat, the way our children are brought up, the way we relate to the natural world around us – it's all become too big and distant and industrialized -- inhuman. It's time to put people first. Hilton is also the cofounder and CEO of Crowdpac, a Silicon Valley political, non-partisan tech start-up, and teaches at Stanford University.Politics, liberal, conservative, left, right, Barack Obama, Tories whatever your political flavor, a conversation with Jonathan Chait and Steve Hilton on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show.
