According to Bradley Tusk, co-founder and managing partner of Tusk Venture Partners, venture capital has been “effectively dead for the last four years." A self-proclaimed “Fixer,” Tusk recently made the decision not to raise a fourth fund. Instead, he decided to go back to his roots and launch an equity-for-services firm aimed at helping early stage startups navigate tech policy and regulation. Today on Equity, Rebecca Bellan sat down with Tusk to explore his pivot from traditional VC to equity-for-services, when it's worth the risk to ask for forgiveness rather than permission, and why he's dedicated to scaling mobile voting. Listen to the full episode to hear more about: The limitations of the current VC model and its lack of liquidity. How Trump's tariffs and other measures have spooked the markets.  Tusk's experience advising early-stage founders on regulatory climates, including the crucial role he played in Uber's early growth. Insights into his mobile voting project aimed at increasing voter turnout through secure, open-source technology. Matt Davies - NY Newsday The two biggest stories in our opening list are Trump's campaign of intimidating the media, which seems to be working … and the apparent ascension of the world's richest man to the unelected position of Acting President-elect.  Also as we recorded on Friday morning, we have: Congress in chaos as the Musk-Johnson budget bill dies a quick death, opening the door to Mike Johnson becoming the latest House Speaker to get ousted Tin-hat conspiracy theories fanning the flames in New Jersey, Trump trolls our neighbors to the north, and flips the bird to the Bahamas by naming Herschel Walker as the U.S. ambassador. The state House emulated the chaos of the U.S. House with the Speaker unable to even assemble a quorum for the last day of session, raising questions about Speaker Joe Tate's upcoming campaign for Detroit mayor The race for Michigan Democratic Party chair may over before it starts as Governor Whitmer endorses longtime ally Curtis Hertel Jr.  In a rare moment of positive news, 120 Democrats in Congress are calling on President BIden to certify the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution – an amendment that originated with Michigan's glass-ceiling breaking Congresswoman Martha Griffiths. A majority of Americans oppose Trump's proposals to test democracy's limits Pretending he has an electoral mandate, Trump keeps making stuff up Appeals court removes prosecutor Fani Willis from Georgia election case against Trump Trump's transition is happening over private emails. Federal officials are nervous THIS WEEK'S GUEST Even in presidential elections, 2 in 5 American citizens choose to sit things out. It's even worse in non-presidential election years. A veteran political consultant believes we can and should improve those numbers by embracing technology. In his book “Vote with Your Phone,” Bradley Tusk believes that allowing Americans to vote in elections from their phones would dramatically increase turnout, reduce extremism, and fix our broken politics. Beyond that, mobile voting will break down barriers that have made in-person and even mail voting inaccessible for countless Americans — younger voters, tribal voters, military voters, voters with disabilities, and many others. Tusk is currently the Managing Partner and Co-founder of Tusk Venture Partners, the world's first venture capital fund that invests solely in early stage startups in highly regulated industries, and the founder of political consulting firm Tusk Strategies.  He is also an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School. Earlier in his career, Bradley served as campaign manager for Mike Bloomberg's 2009 mayoral race, as Deputy Governor of Illinois, overseeing the state's budget, operations, legislation, policy and communications, as communications director for Senator Chuck Schumer, and as Uber's first political advisor.  =========================== This episode is sponsored in part by EPIC ▪ MRA, a full service survey research firm with expertise in • Public Opinion Surveys • Market Research Studies • Live Telephone Surveys • On-Line and Automated Surveys • Focus Group Research • Bond Proposals - Millage Campaigns • Political Campaigns & Consulting • Ballot Proposals - Issue Advocacy Research • Community - Media Relations • Issue - Image Management • Database Development & List Management Mike Luckovich - Atlanta Constitution Journal

We start with a troubling report revealing that numerous Fortune 100 companies have unknowingly hired North Korean IT workers using fake identities. These workers, often based in China or Russia, have gained access to sensitive systems, raising significant concerns about potential cyber attacks. The episode emphasizes the urgent need for companies to adopt stricter hiring practices, including thorough background checks and identity verification, as U.S. law enforcement takes action against those facilitating this scheme. The episode also covers CrowdStrike's recent testimony before Congress following a significant outage that was not attributed to a cyber attack. Senior Vice President Adam Myers explained that a combination of issues led to the incident, prompting the company to implement new safeguards and offer $60 million in customer credits. Lawmakers are pushing for greater accountability in cybersecurity, discussing potential legal reforms to hold software providers liable for negligence. This scrutiny reflects a pivotal moment in the cybersecurity landscape, where accountability and transparency are becoming increasingly essential.Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice has updated its compliance guidelines to include the use of AI, emphasizing the need for companies to assess AI's potential risks and ensure compliance with criminal laws. Compliance officers are now expected to address AI's impact on legal compliance, highlighting the importance of proactive monitoring and risk management. The National Institute of Standards and Technology is also proposing new cybersecurity guidelines focused on identity proofing and fraud detection, urging organizations to adopt AI governance programs to enhance security. Finally, the episode touches on broader technological trends, including mobile voting and the quest for ROI on AI. Tech investor Bradley Tusk advocates for mobile voting as a means to increase voter turnout, while another article discusses the importance of breaking down enterprise silos to achieve meaningful returns on AI investments. The episode concludes with a look at the Content Authenticity Initiative led by Adobe, aimed at ensuring the authenticity of AI-generated content, and the unexpected outcomes of self-service kiosks in fast food chains, which have not led to significant job losses but have changed operational dynamics. Four things to know today 00:00 Fortune 100 Firms Unknowingly Hire North Korean Workers, Exposing Critical Gaps in Cybersecurity Hiring Practices03:14 Perfect Storm or Negligence? New York City Mayor Eric Adams was indicted Wednesday evening on five federal charges, including wire fraud, bribery, and solicitation of contributions from a foreign national. Ravi unpacks the 57-page indictment, which details allegations that Adams solicited and directed staffers to accept campaign donations from foreign officials and businesspeople over nearly a decade while receiving gifts, including free luxury international travel, in exchange for political favors. Bradley Tusk then joins Ravi to analyze the charges and preview what New Yorkers can expect in the weeks ahead. They discuss the prosecutorial motives behind the case, why some conservatives claim the indictment is part of a conspiracy and some progressives want to shout “I told you so,” whether Adams should resign, and how his legal troubles could impact New York City's upcoming mayoral race. Venture capitalist and political strategist Bradley Tusk joins hosts Christina Greer and Harry Siegel to discuss his new book, Vote With Your Phone: Why Mobile Voting Is Our Final Shot at Saving Democracy, proposing a tech solution to the seemingly intractable problem of low-turnout local elections leading to ever-more radical politics. And Tusk, who's a supporter of the podcast, digs into the mess Eric Adams has made for himself, and how the mayor could still dig his away out of it. That starts, he says, with not getting indicted — and then defining himself as a mayor who's produced for New Yorkers while boxing in his challengers to compete for the progressive share of the primary vote in a citywide contest that includes many more moderate Democrats.
