Colorado voters approved a proposition in the last election that funds victims' services and other support programs through an excise tax on guns. We talk with an advocate about efforts to reduce gun vigilance. Then, what's next for RTD now that voters have weigh-in on new board members and funding? Also, how the fantasy novel "Navola" helped the author escape climate change anxiety. And a mother's immigration story is at the heart of "Avaaz," now playing at the Denver Center Theater Company.

Power to the People: Use Your Voice, Change the World (Headline Press, 2024) is Danny Sriskandarajah‘s radical manifesto for change designed to inspire citizen action around the world. The book presents a blueprint for how we, as individuals, can make a difference through greater community engagement and how we can deliver a society that works for the many and not the few. He speaks to voter apathy and a growing sense that elections no longer matter, with politicians and institutions too focused on short-term issues to grapple with complex global problems such as climate change, rising inequality, and digital disruption. Yet the book is also filled with inspiring real-life examples of citizen power in action, ranging from a volunteer-run repair café in Danny's local suburb to Avaaz's successful campaigns to tackle endemic corruption in Brazil. From public ownership of social media spaces to democratizing share ownership and from re-energizing co-operatives to creating a people's chamber at the United Nations, this campaigning book has a mission to make us reclaim our power as citizens of the world. i was listening to the sound of rain falling in a small cabin by a stream with distant thunder in the background…  TRANSCRIPTION OF EPISODE(bell and breath) (Rain from inside a cabin with thunder in the distance) You're listening to the sound of rain falling in a small cabin by a stream with a bit of distant thunder in the background.  Is it raining where you are now? Maybe it is snowing? If so, what does it sound like?  Now, this particular recording is quite evocative for me, with the distant rumbling of thunder that might be threatening to ignite a fire, a wildfire, as we have seen throughout Canada this year or maybe… a tornado brewing behind that storm that could suddenly break this cabin to pieces, myself included.  Or maybe this rain will go on for days and days as it did in 2019 and fill this cabin with water and take it down the river to Lac Simon? Who knows what might happen in this era of permanent climate emergencies… Now, unfortunately, listening to soundscapes, like rain and thunder…  now terrify me. It makes me think back to the very first episode of this podcast, terrified : In May 2019, my climate denial bubble burst. It was a terrifying and disorienting experience that made me question everything about my life. In retrospect, I realize this was a zen-like gift of ‘terrified awakening', of ‘clear seeing', but at the time, I was paralyzed with emotion and dread. What triggered my climate denial bubble to burst? Sweet rain, gentle thunder, thank you so much. Thank you for your gifts and for your warnings.  We are changing our ways, aren't we. We are making efforts to change our ways of being on this planet, incrementally, but we are making efforts. The problem is that science tells us that our efforts are not enough, not nearly enough to avoid catastrophe that is being announced.  Can you hear the sound of catastrophe in the rain and thunder?  * Recorded on August 10, 2023 at 10.40am in Duhamel, Québec. I am grateful and accountable to the earth and the human labour that provided me with the privilege of producing this episode. Facebook to Warn Users Who 'Like' Bad Coronavirus Info

Facebook will soon begin warning users when they interact with dangerous misinformation about the coronavirus. A notice will be sent to users who have clicked on, reacted to, or commented on posts with harmful or false claims about COVID-19 after they have been removed by moderators. The notification, which will start appearing on Facebook in the next few weeks, will direct users to a site where the World Health Organization debunks misinformation about the virus. Facebook said that in March it put more than 40 million warning labels on videos, posts or articles about the coronavirus that fact-checking organizations had determined to be false or misleading. Facebook says those warning labels have stopped 95% of users from clicking on the false information. "It's a big indicator that people are trusting the fact-checkers," said Baybars Orsek, director of the International Fact-Checking Network. However, Orsek also said that Facebook's data should be reviewed by outside editors or experts, and that the company should give regular updates about the impact of its fact-checking. Facebook has recruited dozens of news organizations around the globe to check bad information. The Associated Press is part of that program. Facebook will also begin promoting articles that debunk COVID-19 misinformation on a new information center called "Get The Facts." Still, misinformation about the coronavirus continues to pop up on the site. A study by Avaaz, a group that tracks and researches online misinformation, found more than 100 pieces of misinformation about the coronavirus on Facebook, and they were viewed millions of times even after the claims had been marked as false or misleading by fact-checkers. Other false claims on the site were not marked as misinformation, despite being found to be false by fact-checkers. In its report, Avaaz said that coronavirus misinformation spreads faster than Facebook's current system can track it. The group noted that it can take as long as 22 days for Facebook to label misinformation — giving it plenty of time to spread.

This is the second part of an interview we did with Ben Wikler, a social activist and host of The Flaming Sword of Justice podcast. Wikler got his start in media working for Al Franken, a comedian who now represents Minnesota in the U.S. Senate. You can listen to the first part of this interview here. Ben Wikler was working in a shared office space for nonprofits in Cambridge, Mass., when Aaron Swartz, a well-known Internet activist best known as the co-founder of Reddit, moved into the room next door. The pair’s mutual interest in progressive politics and technology led them to become friends and work on launching the talk show that eventually turned into The Flaming Sword of Justice, a podcast that Wikler now runs on his own. “Aaron was one of the most brilliant people in the millennial generation. He was 14 when he helped create RSS. He was one of the co-authors of the RSS specification, which is how websites talk to each other basically,â€? said Wikler. Last fall, Swartz committed suicide at the age of 26 while facing criminal charges for hacking into MIT’s network and taking academic articles from a database called JSTOR. He intended to make the articles, which were stored behind a pay wall, free and available to the public online. According to Wikler, Swartz had met academics from other countries who couldn’t afford to pay the subscription fees to JSTOR and had their own academic research hindered because of it. He thought this was an outrage and wanted to make the material more readily available. “He thought if they were making things worse for everybody and he could change them, then he just should,â€? Wikler said. But Swartz was caught downloading millions of academic articles illegally on the MIT campus, a breech that lead to multiple felony charges for him. At the time of his death, Swartz was facing the possibility of 50 years in prison because of his JSTOR hacking, consequences he had never imagined would be on the table. “They set up a security camera and did a whole stakeout. … They chased him down in the middle of the street and arrested him. He was strip searched, and they, like, ransacked his apartment,â€? Wikler said.  In spite of the legal charges he was facing, Swartz pushed forward with the show with Wikler. The pair moved to New York City and started working out the activist organization Avaaz’s headquarters. Wikler and Swartz eventually landed a spot on a new radio station broadcasting in Washington, D.C. For five months, they recorded the show every Sunday morning at 8 am in Wikler’s Brooklyn apartment. Unfortunately, as the show progressed, it seemed unclear whether Swartz â€" still facing criminal charges â€" would be able to stay involved moving forward. “The first day that I saw down to start planning out the new show, Aaron committed suicide. So this year has been really hard,â€? said Wikler. “Everything I do that is related to the show, he’s still in the room,â€? he said.Â

Ben Wikler interviews political activists and organizers on his podcast and radio show The Flaming Sword of Justice, which is affiliated with the well-known political advocacy group MoveOn.org. He has previously worked for the well-known online activist communities, Change.org and Avaaz.org. The host and interviewer got his first big break in media as a student when he helped comedian-turned-activist-turned-elected official Al Franken with the satirical book "Lies: And the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right." Wikler went on to work for Franken, now a U.S. senator from Minnesota, on the Franken’s talk show, which aired on the Air America radio network during President George W. Bush’s administration. A native of Madison, Wis., Wikler said he was influenced by public radio and The Onion, two forms of media that have deep roots in his home town. He also experienced a heavy dose of political activism growing up. “My first political memory is my mom taking me to a Jesse Jackson rally on Capitol Hill, said Wikler, “Yeah. It was the 1988 presidential race and I was seven. Very exciting. The activist was always interested in journalism, particularly media with a point of view. While still in middle and high school, he started underground newspapers, including one that was banned by his school administration. As a teenager, he used media to launch a successful campaign to get the local Madison school district to cancel their exclusive contract with Coca-Cola, which promoted students drinking an inordinate amount of soda, he said. While in high school, Wikler was also using his underground newspaper to tell jokes, which eventually lead to headline writing for The Onion and working with Franken on Air America. “I experienced both one of the like, really exciting and fun journalistic start up experiences, and one of the kind of most disastrous media implosions of the last decade, said Wikler of his time at Air America. Unfortunately, the primary investor in Air America turned out to be a con artist, literally. Many of the other leaders of the project weren’t familiar enough with the radio business model to make it work, Wikler said. Still, Wikler learned a lot about organizing Franken’s followers, primarily people who were angry at the Bush administration. At one point, Franken went on tour around the country, and Wikler was astonished to see that a radio host on a struggling network could fill 1,500 seat theaters, even in the middle of the day. “You could do a show that is entertaining and engaging, but then actually participatory, he said. Wikler is in the midst of a relaunch of his current show, The Flaming Sword of Justice, but he would like it to be participatory like Franken’s old show. He primarily has guests tell stories about how they got involved in different campaigns and causes, such as the fight for marriage equality. “What’s amazing to me is these people who spent years and years, or decades, fighting these battles that seemed super hopeless for a very long time, he said, “The stories that really land in the deepest place for people are David verse Goliath stories. “The world is actually full of those stories, and I want to bring those forward, Wikler said. Check back in with the podcast to hear Part II of our conversation with Ben Wikler, where he talks about his relationship with the late Aaron Swartz, one of the founders of Reddit.
