Actor, Comedian and Producer Nic Novicki chats with us about the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge and how it aims to reshape representation of people with disabilities in the film industry.
Today I am joined by Tracy Sayre, co-founder of Moonshot Initiative (formerly Women's Weekend Film Challenge) who helps thousands of women build networks and break down barriers in the film and television industries. Through Moonshot, Tracy has produced nearly 40 short films. She is an award-winning screenwriter and wrote and produced “Lily + Mara” with her writing partner, Caroline Roberts (AP of “The Little Mermaid”), which screened on PBS and had its world premiere at the Rhode Island International Film Festival. Tracy lives in Kingston with her husband and two daughters. She is an avid reader and loves weightlifting.Tracy shares about how Moonshot Initiative was born and the work they now do including their pilot accelerator program, their signature weekend film challenge, and monthly virtual workshops featuring prominent film and TV professionals. Tracy is a panelist for HERSTORY, an evening of conversation and networking with others in the film and television industry here in the Hudson Valley. Easterseals Disability Film Challenge. Created in 2013 and launched in 2014, the challenge gives filmmakers – with and without disabilities – the opportunity to collaborate to tell unique stories that showcase disability in its many forms, inviting aspiring storytellers to creatively write, produce, and complete short films. It is a week-long filmmaking contest, open to all, that provides a platform for new voices in the entertainment industry. Nic Novicki is an actor, comedian and producer who has performed on six continents. His television credits include: Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos, AXS Gotham Comedy Live, Jack and Triumph, The Neighbors, Austin and Alley, Private Practice and Drop Dead Diva. He has appeared in several movies, such as Life Happens, November Rule, The Last 5 Years, Boston Girls and Breaking Wind and will soon be seen in the upcoming Dead Ant. Nic has produced several feature films, television pilots and web series for companies including Sony, CBS, Air China, Maxim and Universal and is an active member in the Producers Guild of America's Diversity Committee. Nic wrote for the CBS Diversity Showcase and has also written and directed several short films including A Little Broke, which was acquired by the TV station Shorts HD. The year before, his romantic short Valse garnered numerous awards, most notably Grand Prize at the 2013 Movie Machine Digital Cinema Festival. In 2012, he won the “Million Hits Viral Competition” with a spec beer commercial. In 2016, Chris published a series of carefully designed viral videos showing a giant sea monster in the river Thames that received dozens of millions of views and generated massive hype in the UK's capital. At present, Chris is in post production with his next short (a live action / animation hybrid), and is developing more short, TV and feature scripts to direct in the future. Each year since 2017, Gwinnett County Public Library has hosted the Teen Film Challenge, which encourages customers ages 13-19 to submit their creative video work of any genre! In this episode of the podcast, we chat with former TFC winner Sebastian Soler about his stop motion animation work, his experience with the TFC, and his current college work toward a career in filmmaking.
Ally is joined by Katrina Medoff and Tracy Sayre who are the executive co-directors of the Women's Weekend Film Challenge which is a women-in-film initiative that places professional filmmakers on crews that write, shoot and edit a short film in just one weekend. Through the WWFC, they have produced 24 films to date with more than 500 professional female filmmakers in New York City. These films have already been selected for 60 film festivals and counting, including the HBO Women in Comedy Festival and Fantasia Film Festival. The Berkshire Film and Media Collaborative has partnered with Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation and the Civic Life Project to present the Bridging Divides, Healing Communities Youth Film Challenge. It's easy to apply, it's free to enter, and you won't be on your own. You can learn skills from professional filmmakers in free workshops, and you can get advice along the way. Don't worry about equipment; you can shoot it on your smartphone! You can get $50 toward your production if you're among the first 50 to submit your film and free gear if you don't have a camera. Your entry will be judged by a panel of film industry professionals, and you'll have the chance to win up to $2000 and have your film screened at 3 local theaters.
