I had a great time talking with Ray Dewey. It's a podcast that I've been wanting to do for quite a while and it's just taken a while for us to get together. He's a really busy guy so I finally said: "Fine, I'll come up to Santa Fe."  I knew Ray would have a great story, and he did not disappoint.Ray was an instrumental figure in the Native American art business, especially from the 1970s through the 1990s. He still buys and sells paintings, so it's not like he's not out of the scene, but he was just so pivotal as the owner/operator of Dewey Fine Art. I remember going into his gallery and just being in awe of all the material and the way he had it displayed. He ran a first-class business and was always keen on educating anyone who wanted to learn.I would come in as a young guy in my 30s and I didn't have much money but he would still spend the time to talk to me. That's the thing that great dealers do. Ray is one of those great dealers. Not to mention, he was really the first person in the Southwest to deal in the paintings of one Ed Mell. Ed and I have been friends for a very long time, but Ray gave him his first show in 1985. Of all things, it was a Maynard Dixon and Ed Mell show, which was pretty groundbreaking at the time. It's a fascinating tale and it's really important to know who the groundbreaking individual was who had so much to do with enhancing the Native American art scene in Santa Fe. As our episode title suggests, there's a mystery at the center of the Santa Fe Plaza. 155 years ago, a box of relics containing elements of New Mexico's past was buried underneath what later became a controversial monument. Today, while the monument or obelisk has been toppled, the relics underneath it have yet to be unearthed. KRQE News 13 Investigative Reporter Larry Barker joins Chris and Gabby this week to discuss his months-long investigation into a hidden box of historical treasures buried underneath the Santa Fe "Soliders Monument." Larry walks through the research process he took to confirm the existence of the time capsule, and the items inside of it. A former Air Force pilot turned (possibly shady) art dealer thinks he's on his way to the grave in the late 80s and comes up with an idea. He's going to use his amassed wealth to put together a modern day treasure chest and go die next to it in the Rocky Mountains. The flaw in his plan? He didn't die. That man was Forest Fenn and he eventually decided in 2010 to hide the treasure anyway (without his body) and tell the world to go find it; winner take all. And with that the hunt was on. Over the course of the next decade hundreds of thousands of people searched high and low for this infamous box. Some even lost their lives in the pursuit. But was this treasure really out there? And it wasn’t a grizzled Indiana Jones type.  If you can believe this… he’s a 32-year-old med student who used to write comedy for The Onion.  Name is Jack Steuf…. who says he became obsessed with the treasure hunt in 2018… and found the mysterious box in Wyoming… but he won’t say where. Inside… he found gold nuggets… coins … sapphires… diamonds and pre-Columbian artifacts worth .. eh… 2-million dollars.
