It's time for another New World interview, this time with editor/director James Melkonian, who started as an intern at New World Pictures before climbing the ladder all the way to VP of Post-Production! James spent five years at New World, toiling away on a wide range of projects - GODZILLA 1985 (Ep. 108), THE PUNISHER (Ep. 121), REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS (Ep. 81) - just about everything at New World, especially once he took over the Post-Production department from Tony Randel (HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II, Ep. 106). From doing edit work on NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER (Ep. 29) and MAKING CONTACT (Ep. 40) to supervising the music for EAT AND RUN (from last year's #NOvember), James discusses a variety of New World films with us, including spilling some wild stories from THE GUNRUNNER (starring Kevin Costner), THE TELEPHONE (starring Whoopi Goldberg and directed by Rip Torn), and KNIGHTS OF THE CITY (starring Leon Isaac Kennedy)! Then, James explains how things started to change at New World and let him know that the end was near! Once New World closed its doors, James moved on to direct a couple movies post-New World, THE STONED AGE and THE JERKY BOYS. You don't want to miss this episode, which gives an unique inside look to how New World Pictures ran during the second ownership group! Thanks so much to James for appearing on the show! Mike and Christian listen in to a hilarious prank phone call that pushes the buttons of an angry mob boss.
“We had the tapes and I was just giving them out. And by me giving the tapes out, it spread all across the country - the world!” ~Kamal Ahmed The Jerky Boys were a global phenomenon in the 90s - a comedy duo who rose to fame by prank calling unsuspecting recipients, and selling the recordings on comedy albums. Now, Kamal Ahemd, one side of that duo, is using the very tactics that jumpstarted his career decades ago to get his latest project off the ground. Since leaving The Jerky Boys in 2000, Kamal has directed 8 full-length films and most recently a TV mini series. That series is Crash The System, a sci-fi thriller focussing on the story of Tim Lonergan, who becomes a pawn to the weapons tech industry and decides to fight against it. Take a trip down memory lane as Kamal discusses his early days with The Jerky Boys. Hear as he discusses the current state of satire in the modern entertainment landscape - and why it's become much harder to get right. And learn all about the genesis of Crash The System and what he's set out to achieve. In this episode, you will learn: Why bootstrapping can be a great way of getting your idea off ground. Why you sometimes need to deviate from the “master plan”. How to bring your authentic self to your writing and art. Find out more about Kamal here. Your host is inkjockey founder Mark Heywood. Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. is known as the father of the modern day bourbon industry. Not only is he a central figure in creation of what we now know and love as the Buffalo Trace Distillery, but he was also instrumental in the passing of the Bottled-in-Bond Act and even served as Mayor of Frankfort for 16 years. Though his beloved "EH Taylor" label has been owned by many different distilleries over the years, Sazerac purchased the label in 2009, effectively bringing Taylor home. This week, the guys uncork the once a year release of EH Taylor Barrel Proof Bourbon. This is the 12th release of its kind and clocks in at a whopping 131.1 proof. Will this bourbon be "hot to be hot" or will it delight our senses? In this episode, we reflect on a recent night out on the town in Lexington and also do our best Jerky Boys impression while calling the Sazerac customer service number. It's another laugh filled week and we appreciate you coming along for the ride. -------------------------- Socials IG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupky FB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupky TW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Partnership(s) Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUP Visit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your order Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!
We're back! For our 95th episode, we bring you a collection of soundtrack cuts from 1995. It was the height of the 90s, when 80s pop stars showed up in the most random movies, fledgling rock bands popped up on teen cult classics, and also Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh Eagles teamed up with Lita Ford to do the theme song for a RoboCop TV series. 1995 was definitely a mood... Also appearing in this episode: Tom Jones covering Lenny Kravitz for the Jerky Boys movie, The Proclaimers covering The Everly Brothers' "Bye Bye Love" for the movie Bye Bye Love, we get a few cuts from Green Day, Wax, and Salt N' Pepa. Also Bryan Adams performs the drippiest, horniest song ever written... Ladies and gentlemen, this is 1995. SHOW NOTES FOR THIS EPISODE: Jack Black in Bye Bye Love Tom Jones performing "Are You Gonna Go My Way" on The Tonight Show INTRO/OUTRO: "Dance Rocket" by Jesse Spillane MUSIC VIDEOS: "There's A Future To This Life" by Joe Walsh & Lita Ford "Moonlight" by Sting Have a soundtrack you'd like us to cover? It's time to break it down a little more. Chad and Alex freestyle on topics from smartphones to fishing to the cool way to lace your shoes to what a sneakerhead is, and are we hip? How good were the Jerky Boys and are we really done listening to Howard Stern? And what happened to Howard Stern!? One thing is for sure though, we are cool! Haha. This episode is brought to you by Jack Daniel's Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey, Bad Boy Mowers, Napa Valley Olive Oil, The Provider, American Almond Beef, Angel Drops, The Nashville Palace, Cowboy Choice Feeds, Oakley Sunglasses, Mickey Thompson Tires, LEER Toppers, and BedSlide!
Comedy people Deanna Ortiz and Mike Degnan join Andy and Steph to take a big one off the board: 1961's OG "West Side Story"! It's a stone cold classic... but is it?? We can't tell, so let's unpack it. Is the way Puerto Ricans are presented in this movie cool? or is it crazy? CRAZY? COOL? GO! We talk about how a man fired from the set goes on to win an Oscar for directing the movie. Deanna's obsession with "Romeo and Juliet" keeps us on task (kind of) for links to Willy Shakes. Mike tells us how the Jerky Boys helped get him into this film when he was but a boy. Steph talks tritones! And Andy's just like, "remember that Gap ad?" the No Skips playlist on spotify (not one overture so far!!): https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6NWZ1ETlRqC9s7gcVIoTFW?si=e25b86e4a05a48a6check out our Patreon at patreon.com/dumbfun Hosted on Acast. You know what's not fun? Crank phone calls. You know what's even less fun? Staged crank phone calls. Get out your ass cream and dust off your offensive accents, we watch The Jerky Boys: The Movie from 1995 starring The Jerky Boys, Alan Arkin, Big Pussy, William Hickey, and the guy from Frankenhooker. No SNL alums this week, Ben picked some random shitty movie to watch, once again proving the truth that there are shitty movies that don't feature Rob Schneider. Have you ever been struck by a chord so powerful it feels like a punch to the gut? That's what happened to us with Nirvana's "Nevermind," an explosive collection of creativity and raw emotion that defined a generation. Strap in as we take you on a nostalgic journey through this seismic album, beyond the well-worn tracks like "Smells Like Teen Spirit," to unearth the top three lesser-known songs that still pack a punch. We'll share our personal connections to the music, dissect the intricate tapestry of influences, and reflect on the tragic genius of Kurt Cobain. Expect a deep connection with the tracks that became anthems of a youth caught between apathy and passion. But this isn't just a trip down memory lane. We're connecting the dots between the primal urges coded in our DNA and the lyrical prowess of artists like Radiohead and, of course, Nirvana. Kurt's complex songwriting often echoed his views on society, and we tackle how those messages resonate in today's climate. The episode isn't without its lighter moments as we find humor in the absurdity of discussing the Federal Reserve in the middle of a music chat. Sol from the Jerky Boys even pops in, offering insights that only enhance our musical dissection. So, tune in for a rollercoaster ride through the poignant, the profound, and the downright funny moments embedded in one of the most groundbreaking albums of all time.Support the show
Yeah, yeah, it's been too long. …Usual Christmastime to-do list is kicking everyone's ass. Thankfully, Caleb from EAS in the ‘Springs kicked Hostus Maximus Justin and Gearhead Celebutant Mark's collective asses back into the studio (over sips at Bristol Brewery), because the Garage Hour is too much candy not to have some. Gearhead location experimentation ensued, fueled by Axe & Oak's Pike's Peak Hillclimb whiskey, 9mm and .22 Magnum, visits from Charlie (who actually commanded an Abrams tank), plus movies Caleb's got to watch (or he'll die). What's more to like: the F1 parade and ear-plugging weenies, tank movies, Saturday night coolers and van parties, a Glock 43 and an S&W with a billion rounds in the mag, plus Frank Rizzo, Saul Rosenberg and the Egyptian Magician.
