Is our rules-based world finished? This week, Nick Cohen discusses the current & disturbing breakdown in international law - in the week indicted alleged war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu was the first overseas guest of convicted felon President Donald Trump with author & campaigner Steve Crawshaw, the author of the just published Prosecuting the powerful: War crimes & the pursuit of justice.A world run by bad men was never going to improve the international rule of LawDonald Trump, Vladamir Putin & Xi Jinping - let alone their 'mini mes' in Hungary, Israel & elsewhere - are proving a toxic combo' for the maintenance of a new world order that came into being in the wake of the Nuremberg trials. Slobodan Milošević, Ratko Mladić and 19 other individuals have been jailed by the International Criminal Court at The Hague for crimes ranging from genocide to war crimes and crimes against humanity. Bringing powerful political crooks seemed to usher in a new age of international justice. Yet now indicted personalities such as Putin remain at large, while Benjamin Netanyahu is feted by Donald Trump, himself the first convicted felon to occupy the White House.Trump has just issued sanction against the ICC and its senior officials, partly in retaliation for their indictment of Netanyahu! What can we do to stop our world reversing into a new international disorder? Steve Crawshaw argues this is not the time to "hide under the duvet" but to fight back against a tide of authoritarianism and contempt for the international rule of law.Read all about it!Steve Crawshaw @stevecrawshaw reported extensively for decades from Europe. He was in Poland during the rise of Solidarity in Poland, a pivotal event in the fall of the Berlin Wall, and covered the wars in the early 1990s in the former Yugoslavia. In April 2022, the government announced a new policy to reduce migration to the UK that involved sending asylum seekers who reached British soil without permission to have their claims processed in Rwanda. The Rwanda policy has been debated in the media and in courts of law for the past 18 months and the most crucial legal case yet is being decided right now in the Supreme Court. I'm Mary, and in this episode of Noted, I want to understand how this policy fits into the bigger picture of migration in the UK.Molly Blackall, the i Paper's global affairs correspondent, has been covering the policy since it was announced. She shares why it's been so controversial and what might come next. Kolbassia Haussou, a torture survivor and spokesperson for Freedom From Torture, tells me about his own experience of seeking asylum in the UK.I always want to hear from you, whether it's something we're talking about on the pod, or maybe you just want to share your experience. The Whatsapp number is +447723735241. *As of 15th November 2023, the Rwanda policy was deemed as unlawful by the Supreme Court. Some people love change but, in most cases, the words, “we need to revise our strategy,” do not elicit cheers from a team. Whether it's the upheaval and uncertainty, or the prospect of long, often fractious meetings to choose between alternative paths, most of us would like to get on with the job and stop tinkering. This episode is about a UK organization, Freedom From Torture, that faced up to the truth about their waning impact and made a major pivot, from their long-standing model to one in which they had little experience. Chief executive, Sonya Sceats, reflects on some tough debates and decisions and tells us how it all worked out. And in the Coda: Dilrabo Samadova reminds us that human rights were being advocated in Persian poems more than a thousand years ago, and delights in the way poetry shows up everywhere in the life of her country, Tajikistan. The UK government has signed a new deal with France to reduce the number of asylum seekers and refugees crossing the Channel in small boats. More than 40,000 would be migrants have arrived in Britain so far this year, including 1,800 this weekend alone. The deal will see the UK's annual payment to France rise from £55million to £63milion, helping the French authorities to increase the number of officers patrolling the coast 300 – a rise of around 40%. British officers will also be stationed in French border control rooms and share live intelligence. Will it work? And should the UK be doing more to help desperate people fleeing war and persecution? An Islamic faith school's policy of segregating boys from girls is unlawful sex discrimination, court of appeal judges have ruled. What are the implications? The new global spiritual head of the Swaminarayan Hindu organisation is in the UK this week in the run up to Diwali. Mahant Swami Maharaj's first official visit as leader of the BAPS Swaminarayan sect has been attracting thousands of daily worshippers - Vishva Samani went along to meet them. Senior Anglican Bishops have accused the Church of England's main insurer of "horse-trading" in the way it treats survivors of clergy sex abuse. The Archbishop of Canterbury has asked for a review of the way Lambeth Palace deals with those who have been abused in a church context. Donna Birrell reports. We report from Germany's oldest folk festival that celebrates St Lullus, a monk who travelled from Wiltshire to Germany in the 700s and is credited with spreading Christianity in Europe. A High Court Judge has ruled the Government's policy on torture victims is unlawful. Freedom From Torture tell us what the implications are for vulnerable people when a government changes their definition of torture. Jonathan Clark, Bishop of Croydon and Chair of the Churches' Refugee Network explains his response to the ruling. And ahead of World Food Day on Monday, Bob Walker reports from a church in Bristol hosting an event to highlight the moral issues of food waste.
