Adrian Goldberg investigates Russia's attempts to influence Western democracy using disinformation, covert media campaigns and troll farms, with Pekka Kallioniemi, author of Vatnik Soup - originally a Twitter thread, now a book - and Byline Times executive editor Peter Jukes. The discussion covers Tenet, the Tennessee based company linked to right wing influencers,  which according to the US Justice Department received nearly $10 million dollars from RT to promote pro-Kremlin propaganda. In reaction to the Windrush Scandal, the Inspector of Constabulary Wendy Williams in 2020 made 30 recommendations to remedy the situation. These were accepted by then Home Secretary Priti Patel, but her successor Suella Braverman then rowed back on three of the recommendations. These called for a Migrants' Commissioner; tougher powers for the Independent of Chief Inspector of Borders; and to hold reconciliation events, The government has now lost a court case and been told to re-instate the first two of those recommendations, but not the third. In the EU elections, voters in France, Germany and Italy have shown an increasing appetite for populist anti-immigrant parties. The French president Emmanuelle Macron has reacted by calling a snap parliamentary election after his party was beaten into second place in the EU poll by Marine le Pen's National Rally.   In Germany, the Social Democrats, the party of Chancellor Olaf Scholz were pushed into third place by the nationalist AfD. "Extreme protest groups" should be subject to strict new laws according to the government's independent advisor on political violence Lord Walney. This would include organisations like Just Stop Oil and Palestine Action whose members are willing to break the law to get their point across.   They might have restrictions placed on their ability to fundraise or assemble, according to extracts of a new report by Walney leaked to the press. Russia already occupies around 20% of Georgian territory following its invasion in 2008, and the ruling Georgian Dream party is now trying to force media outlets and NGOs who receive funding from abroad to register as “an organisation serving the interests of a foreign power”. UK foreign secretary David Cameron says the legislation is “Kremlin inspired” – a view backed by an estimated 200,000 demonstrators who have faced riot police using tear gas, stun grenades and water canon.
