I'm discovering more and more that there's no end to the work that we can do and the work we can let go of to be fully working in partnership. Claire Pedrick. She says that her starting point is always "grounded in the phenomena of themselves, within the organisation, and within their personal lives as well." Monica says that it's all about being incredibly open where everything happening in a conversation has value and has to be respected. Yannick and Monica delve deep into the topic of assumptions and the need for coaches to bring awareness to our own beliefs as it plays a role in the coaching itself. In the fifth presentation of the Transformative Coaching series, Animas Founder Nick Bolton sets out to examine what we mean by the psychological dimension of the Animas approach and how we work with it in a meaningful yet non-directive manner. At the start of the presentation, Nick invites attendees to view or revisit the first four presentations of the series - likening each presentation to pieces of the jigsaw that shows how we think about Transformative Coaching. In tackling the theme, “Psychological Dimensions to Transformative Coaching”, he first defines what we mean by "psychological" and explores why transformative coaching is fundamentally an inside job that emerges from psychological awareness meeting real world behavioural change and the resultant paradigm shift. He then talks about the chronology of change by revisiting Mezirow's 10 Stages of Transformative Learning and then discussing each level of the 3 Levels of Coaching: Performance Coaching, Developmental Coaching and Transformative Coaching. He also talks about Psychological Foundations behind the psychological dimension where he touches on Personal Construct Theory, Transformative Theory, and Psychology of Worldview. With traditional forms of coaching focused on behavioural change, transformative coaching intentionally seeks to create this paradigm shift through reflexive learning, exploration and experimentation and Nick shares how the Animas approach seeks to achieve this through the Unifying Transformative Theory. He then shares a model of transformative inquiry - a client-centred model that he says is more of a reflection of his intuitive process rather than a proven model. Finally, Nick talks about ethics where he offers several considerations for coaches who seek to do Transformative work.
In this fourth foundational presentation of the Transformative Coaching series, Animas Founder and CEO Nick Bolton explores The Integrative Stance in Transformative Coaching. Nick first explores what we mean by the integrative stance. He defines it as an "open attitude towards models, practices, and theoretical frameworks that draw upon whatever will be most useful for the client but built on top of a unifying theory of change and a core purpose." He then delves into the importance of the integrative approach to the 5 Animas Principles of Transformative coaching. Particularly, he believes the integrative stance is a natural consequence of our approach that puts the clients' experience first: the phenomenological stance at the very heart of Transformative Coaching. In discussing the Unifying Transformative Theory, Nick gives us a brief look into the sets of concepts that Animas attempts to integrate to create paradigm a shift. Nick also shares how the integrative approach can be problematic in that it can become merely light-fingered eclecticism and, done badly, can prioritise technique over the humanistic endeavour. He then shares ways to mitigate these risks, asking us to treat these theories as narratives and metaphors - as a stance rather than an ambition or metric of progress. With that in mind, he argues that supervision is something that transformative coaches should seriously think about. Finally, he shares the Animas Integrative Model offering it as an approach that we can fully adapt or one we can use to develop a sound integrative framework of our own.
In Towards the Whole Person - The Holistic & Systemic Principle in Transformative Coaching, Animas Founder and CEO Nick Bolton explores how this principle fits into the Animas Transformative Coaching process. Nick first frames what we mean when we say holistic and systemic. In the holistic stance, he asks us to consider our clients as both an individual system, mind, body, spirit, but also part of a wider system, of family, work, society and beyond. In the systemic stance, he asks that we recognise that a person is part of multiple systems that shape and impact them. In turn, we, as coaches, should recognise that we are also part of such systems, which inevitably shape the coaching. By considering the holistic experiences and systems at work, we are able to recognise our client's existential reality and their challenges. This enables the clients to face the systems at work in their lives and helps draw out possibilities that can be missed if the holistic and systemic stance isn't considered. On the contrary, if these systems aren't taken into account, Nick argues that coaches operate at a superficial level that may not stand up in the real world. Nick then offers practical approaches to coaching systematically, inviting us to bring into awareness the systems and holistic experiences of both client and coach. Finally, he leaves us with ideas to consider as we begin to explore coaching systematically and a final question to ponder- "is the system really a system?"
Join host Yannick Jacob in this conversation with Dr Chérie Carter-Scott, MCC, who is a NY Times & Amazon Bestseller, behavioural science pioneer, CEO, media personality, and known as the "Mother of Coaching." This fascinating episode begins with Chérie sharing her journey to becoming a coach - from a 20-year old "catalyst" who "likes to work with people" to realising her gift of bringing out people's truths. In this episode, Chérie also talks about her own spiritual background. In offering how she sees training coaches as "training earth angels," Chérie and Yannick engage in conversation about the existential question: are we good or are we evil? Chérie then talks about the need for coaches to be in good shape - physically, mentally, spiritually - for us to be able to be centred and support our clients. She says "we have to ensure that we can lead the way into the future for people who are fearful, anxious, not feeling centred." The conversation then shifts into Chérie's coaching philosophy, which starts with the power of "not knowing." She then explores the concepts of the Three Cs (Curious, Confidence, and Courage), DWBC (Desire, Willingness, Belief, Commitment), and some of the theories that sit behind her practice and coach training. Chérie then delves deeper on the idea of "not knowing" as she shares what she calls an "absolutely devastating" event during a time when she seemed to have had a perfect life, and how she was able to break through this lesson in humility. In talking about her imperfect life, Chérie also talks about the power of beliefs. She shares some powerful questions that she uses within her coaching practice, providing a small window of what goes on in a coaching session with her. Finally, Dr Chérie shares her thoughts about transformation, calling to mind the classic metaphor of the caterpillar, chrysalis, and the butterfly. Dr Chérie is a Global CEO, achange management expert, and a #1 NY Times & Amazon Bestselling author. She has been a frequent guest on Oprah with appearances on CNN, Today, O'Reilly. She is a wife, mother, and grandmother. If you're interested to work with Chérie or learn more about what she does, please visit this link: https://www.drcherie.com/
The humanistic tradition is central to coaching and to transformative coaching in particular. Yet in many ways, it is often only loosely understood in the coaching profession whilst being more fully developed and considered in other fields such as psychotherapy and counselling. In this second presentation of the Transformative Coaching series, Nick will consider the topic of “The Humanistic Tradition in Transformative Coaching”. Taking a brief historical tour over the key thinkers and practitioners in this field, he will draw out the journey that coaching has been on to reach its current state. He'll consider notions of self-actualisation, the primacy of the phenomenological experience, the unfolding nature of being and the vital nature of relationship, as he builds a more detailed picture of the humanistic tradition. Finally, he'll explore what this means for transformative coaches in particular and where they can encounter unexpected challenges with their own personal, deeply-held assumptions about personal growth and change and notions of accepted truth.
In the first presentation of the “Transformative Coaching” series, Nick sets out to answer the fundamental question, “What is Transformative Coaching?” Drawing from a range of sources that form the heritage of the transformative concept, Nick will explore how Animas developed its own unique philosophical and psychological approach to coaching that is both transformative yet also intensely Humanistic. He explores the five dimensions of transformative coaching devised within Animas mapping them to the evolution of coaching in particular and the talking professions as a whole. This presentation will provide the foundations for the remainder of the six lecture series.
Join host Yannick Jacob in this conversation with Robin Shohet who is a supervisor, lecturer and co-author of Supervision in the Helping Professions and In Love with Supervision. In what can be described as a thought-provoking discussion from beginning to end, Robin starts with what he describes to be a "controversial" stance on coaching and the client-coach relationship. Robin also talks about the interconnectedness of supervisor-coach-client and the narratives that each brings into a conversation. He then says that it is his job, as a supervisor, to interrupt these narratives. Drawing from over 40 years of working in supervision, he tells stories that show how he works as a coach supervisor whilst also providing his perspective on coaching supervision, supervision as a spiritual path, transformation, and much more. We hope you enjoy this episode of Coaching Uncaged by Animas.
