106: Adopt a Plant Based Diet for Planetary & Personal Health with Dr. Shireen Kassam

Imagine if the UK's National Health Service (NHS) could save billions of pounds simply by changing what patients eat. Dr. Shireen Kassam, a renowned consultant hematologist, is on a mission to make this a reality. As a featured guest on the NHA Health Science Podcast, hosted by Dr. Frank Sabatino, she discusses her ongoing efforts to revolutionize healthcare in the UK by advocating for plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine. Pushing for Change in the NHS: A Tough Road Ahead In 2022, Dr. Kassam made headlines when she argued for integrating plant-based lifestyle medicine into the NHS. The potential impact? A massive reduction in healthcare costs and a healthier population. But influencing a system as large and complex as the NHS is no small feat. “We try to get the message out, but it's tough to reach the people in power,” Dr. Kassam explains. “It's about starting grassroots movements, building awareness, and slowly turning the tide.” Despite the challenges, her nonprofit organization, Plant-Based Health Professionals UK, is pushing forward, spreading the message of how plant-based diets can prevent and reverse chronic diseases. A Bold New Campaign: Plants First Healthcare One of the most exciting initiatives Dr. Kassam is leading the Plants First Healthcare campaign that launched to coincide with World Food Day. This groundbreaking campaign aims to make plant-based meals the default in UK healthcare institutions. It's inspired by the success of New York City hospitals, which have already adopted greener, plant-based menus. The campaign includes a detailed policy report from the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change and an open letter to all healthcare institutions in the UK. Dr. Kassam hopes to spark meaningful changes that will improve patient outcomes and reduce the environmental impact of the healthcare system. Full post: www.HealthScience.org/106-Dr-Shireen-Kassam

This week in the Nutshell we have the honour of welcoming back our first ever guest, founder of Plant-Based Health Professionals U.K. and Consultant Haematologist, Dr Shireen Kassam. This episode is released on World Food Day to highlight the problem with poor diets globally and how our current food system is at the intersection of the health and climate crises.  Shireen talks us through the last six years since founding the Plant-Based Health Professionals U.K. We hear how the organisation is involved in ongoing education, including the provision of courses in medical schools, conducting research projects as well as  spearheading campaigns working towards changing the food system within the NHS. We discuss the 'Plants First Healthcare' campaign, which is calling on all NHS hospitals and organisations across the UK to adopt a 'plant-based by default' food menu, to improve health outcomes, reduce pandemic risk, limit antibiotic resistance and decrease food costs. We cover so much in this interview- including how, as individuals, we can all get involved - whether we are healthcare professionals or not. And of course we finish off with hearing what Shireen is eating for her delicious plant-based dinner tonight! One of the mining industry's favorite sayings is "If it can't be grown, it must be mined". However, mining plays an important role in agriculture too! For this special release episode of On the Rocks, Prospector founder Emily King chats with Bram Govaerts, Director General a.i. of CIMMYT. This conversation began during a panel discussion about the Russia & Ukraine War, and how it affected the supply chain of many industries. In this episode we dive deeper into how the conflict is still affecting the mining and agriculture industries, as well as CIMMYT's work to help those caught up in conflicts, natural disasters, and more. Mining and agriculture currently seem to work in parallels, following similar paths but not quite meeting up. Emily and Bram chat about ideas to bring the two natural resource sectors together, and how doing so could help ESG commitments. It might be time for a new saying as mining and agriculture continue to grow together! Listen to the full episode below or on your favorite podcast platforms! Many minerals and metals are needed in the agriculture industry, including iron for equipment and phosphate for fertilizer. Ahead of World Food Day, this episode of The Weekly Tradecast talks about the right to food with senior economist Miho Shirotori of UNCTAD's international trade and commodities division. Many countries have long struggled with food insecurity. But COVID-19, conflict and climate change are making hunger problems worse and forcing some nations to the brink of famine.  The war in Ukraine has put a major strain on supplies as both Russia and Ukraine are "breadbaskets" for countries in the Middle East and Africa.  With at least 345 million people facing acute food insecurity and many more going hungry, listen to Miho to find out how we can overcome shortages and achieve the right to food.
