Bobby Skel (Robert Skelton) had several records that charted both regionally and nationally in the mid 1960's through the early 70's. He recorded at Macon, Georgia's first recording studio, King Studios, on Mulberry Street next to the Grand Opera House. He later recorded at Master Sound in Atlanta. We conducted an oral history interview with Bobby at  the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1997. This tribute includes portions of that interview and much of Bobby's music, used by permission from the publisher. A native of Swainsboro, Georgia, Bobby passed away at his home in Granbury, Texas, on October 31, 2010, at the age of 68.

On this THROWBACK THURSDAY edition of the podcast, we revisit our conversation from Episode 69 with former lead singer of the band Third Day, Mac Powell.  When Mac was a sophomore in high school, he moved to Atlanta, GA where his passion for music and faith found an outlet in the band THIRD DAY. Over the past 25 years THIRD DAY helped transform Christian music and built a devoted fan base while traveling the world many times over, selling nearly 10 million albums, earning 4 Grammy awards, 1 American Music Award, 24 Dove Awards, and by being inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. In 2018, THIRD DAY ended their time together as Mac and others pursued other passions and projects. Mac has also put together two collections of independent original country music (Mac Powell in 2012 and Southpaw in 2014), which include collaborations with songwriters such as Darius Rucker, Christian Bush (Sugarland), Chris Stapleton, and Travis Tritt. You can listen to the entire interview with Mac from Episode 69 in January of 2018 here.  For more, log on to http://SportsSpectrum.com

God gives us all unique gifts, and to some he even grants fame. What happens when fame comes knocking? Is it possible to stay humble? That was my burning question for Mac Powell, the lead singer of the band, Third Day. Many people consider Third Day to be a pioneer in the Christian music business, but to Mac, it was just a result following God’s call on his life.  Mac has toured all over the world and has even been inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. During his two decades of being a recording artist, Mac stays true to his faith by clinging to scriptures like Romans 5:8. Mac looks to Jesus and his five children as his guiding forces. The music he makes is for his family and his savior. It was truly a privilege to get to talk to Mac today, and I know you will be blessed by what he has to say about his crazy gift of a life. More in this episode: Mac shares all about his history and why he started Third Day. After 25 years, Mac still feels the great joy of bringing music to the world. Mac tells us how he looks to Jesus to stay humble. How music was a huge part of connecting Mac to his heavenly Father. Mac knew nothing about Christian music before starting Third Day. Holding onto something too tightly is just as dangerous as ignoring your calling. Mac’s biggest strength is his people. How Mac battles to have patience. Resources: http://www.thirdday.com/

A legendary recording artist and songwriter for the Memphis–based Stax label, William Bell first found success with his own recording of “You Don’t Miss Your Water,” a song that would go on to be covered by Otis Redding, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Byrds, and others. He found chart success in the ‘60s and ‘70s with additional self-penned singles, such as the Top 20 hits “Everybody Loves a Winner,” “A Tribute to a King,” “Private Number,” and “Tryin’ to Love Two,” which hit #1 on the R&B chart and #10 on the pop chart. His Top 10 R&B hit “I Forgot to Be Your Lover” went on to be covered by Billy Idol as the Top 10 pop hit, “To Be a Lover,” and was reinvented once again when Jaheim sampled it in “Put That Woman First,” a Top 5 R&B hit and Top 20 pop hit in 2004. In 2016 Bell returned to the re-formed Stax label to release This Is Where I Live, an album of primarily original songs that featured William’s own interpretation of “Born Under a Bad Sign,” which was originally recorded by Albert King and went on to become a blues standard that was named one of the “500 Songs that Shaped Rock & Roll” by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. A partial list of artists who’ve recorded titles from the William Bell songbook includes Lou Rawls, Percy Sledge, Big Mama Thornton, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Rod Stewart, Etta James, LaVern Baker, Dusty Springfield, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Melissa Etheridge, Robert Cray, and Sturgill Simpson. Additionally, his songs have been sampled by Ludacris, Kanye West, and others.  Bell was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. He was honored with the R&B Pioneer Award by The Rhythm and Blues Foundation, and the W.C. Handy Heritage Award from the Memphis Music Foundation. In 2016 the Americana Music Association honored him with its Lifetime Achievement Award. The following year he earned his first Grammy award for This Is Where I Live, which was named Americana Album of the Year.
