Interview by Kris PetersHillbilly Vegas' dynamic sound caught the ears of an independent label in Nashville in 2011, and their first album Ringo Manor was released and sold more than 10,000 copies – driven by the hit single Little Miss Rough and Tumble. The band has gone onto chart five songs on Billboard's Rock charts, including Let It Ride – which remained on the chart for 13 weeks and reached #10, Feels Good, High Time For A Good Time, Hell To Pay, Two GunTown, and fan favorite Shake It Like A Hillbilly. The band has earned a reputation for rousing live shows-bringing a loud, party-like atmosphere that is all-inclusive.They've shown they have a broad appeal across different genres, pleasing crowds while performing shows with rockers Blackberry Smoke, The Kentucky Headhunters, Wolfsbane and Ted Nugent; along with country icons Alabama, Travis Tritt, Blake Shelton, and Wynonna Judd. Hillbilly Vegas has played before huge crowds at NASCA Revents, as well as many major bike rallies, including the legendary annual Sturgis Motorcycle rally. They have a strong UK following, and have played the Maid of Stone and Steelhouse festivals. Now, Hillbilly Vegas are set to raise the stakes even higher with the release of their new album A La Mode, slated for release this Friday, May 8. With everything you love about Hillbilly Vegas and fresh characteristics that expand their sound even further, A La Mode epitomises the rock and roll spirit unlike anything you have heard in recent memory.HEAVY sat down with vocalist and original member Steve Harris to find out more, starting by asking how he is feeling about the release."We feel good about it," he enthused. "We like what we've done. The name A La Mode is a silly name, but it's a fun name. We hope that everybody enjoys it as much as we enjoyed doing it."We ask Steve to dive deeper into the musical side of the album."Well, I wish I could say there's a bunch of deep meaning in it," he smiled, "but we just write songs and when I hear the music that the guys start writing, I just... Sometimes it tells a story, sometimes it paints a picture, and then I start writing from there. I do a lot of observational stuff, and people I know are just things I've seen, and there's a lot of things on there. There's a good story in every song, even the silly ones, and we hope everybody finds their story in our story."In the full interview we covered Hillbilly Vegas' new album A La Mode, its musical character, notable collaborations, and upcoming touring plans. Steve introduced the band lineup and described the record as a mix of ballads, heavy rockers, country, and boogie-woogie, explaining the title reflects the idea that “everything's better with ice cream” rather than any title track. He also highlighted the single Mr. Midnight, noting Paul Rodgers contributed vocals, appears in the song and video, and was praised as a defining rock voice and a generous collaborator. The conversation then reviewed the band's origins and early Nashville experience, with Steve saying the Nashville songwriting-factory environment conflicted with their broader rock-and-roll approach. He recounted how their first radio play led to a Nashville record deal. Steve also announced a U.S. summer tour planned for June–August, the band's first U.S. tour in three years, and noted several of their top streaming cities are in Australia and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Here's What We Know
Why Timing Matters More Than Talent in the Music Industry | Trey Calloway

Here's What We Know

Send us Fan MailThere's an idea we all want to believe. If you're talented enough, you'll make it.This week on Here's What We Know, we sit down with singer-songwriter Trey Calloway, a rising country artist navigating the reality of building a career in today's music industry. And what we uncover is something a lot of people don't want to admit: Timing matters more than talent. We talk about country stars like Jason Aldean and Eric Church, artists who feel inevitable now but weren't always. There were years where nobody knew who they were, years where it could have gone the other way.Because when you really look at success in the music industry, you start to realize something. It doesn't happen overnight, and it doesn't happen just because someone is talented. It happens when everything lines up. Talent. Timing. Opportunity. And readiness.Miss one of those, and the outcome can look completely different. If you've ever wondered what it really takes to make it in country music, why some artists break through and others don't, or how timing shapes success in the music industry, give this episode a listen! In This Episode:Why some incredibly talented artists never break throughHow timing, readiness, and life experience all collideThe reality of making money in music todayWhy success often comes later than expectedAnd what keeps someone going when it would be easier to quitThis episode is sponsored by:Sterling Oak CabinetryReed Animal HospitalBio:Trey Calloway is a singer/songwriter born and raised in North Carolina. The son of a preacher man, Trey grew up singing in church and was a seasoned performer by the age of 10.  Although southern and contemporary gospel were his first musical loves, he was instantly mesmerized by the sounds of country music after hearing a Garth Brooks Greatest Hits album his parents bought for him.  A deep understanding and passion for the rocking, boot stomping, country music of artists such as Clint Black, Alan Jackson, and Travis Tritt began to grow within him. Trey began writing songs, playing guitar, and performing in clubs at age 15. He knew early on without a shadow of a doubt that he would make music his career. Trey recorded and released his debut Nashville album entitled “Carolina Man” and was able to work with some of his musical heroes including Brent Mason, Lonnie Wilson and Buddy Hyatt on the album. Website: https://treycallowaymusic.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/treycallowaymusic/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/treycallowaymusic/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/TreyCalloway1TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@treycallowaymusicConnect with Gary:Gary's WebsiteFollow Gary on InstagramGary's TiktokGary's FacebookWatch the episodes on YouTubeAdvertise on the PodcastThank you for listening. Let Us Know What You Think of the Show!SHOW SUMMARY:Date: April 3, 2026Name of Podcast: Backstage Pass RadioS10: E6: John Gentry - Country With A Combat HeartSHOW SUMMARY:He jokes about sneaking a new guitar past his spouse, then pivots into something heavier: what it means to carry heartbreak, discipline, and memory into a Texas country song. We're joined by rising artist John Gentry from Willis, Texas, an Army veteran whose music blends honky tonk grit with the spirit of 90s country.  We talk about the artists who shaped his ears and his voice, from Vince Gill to Travis Tritt, and why great guitar playing can turn a good show into a lifelong memory. John breaks down his songwriting process as emotion-first and unforced, where a rhythm or a rough day can open the floodgates. He also gets candid about perfectionism, how easy it is to overwork a track, and what he learned from his first co-write on “Mr. Lonely.”  John walks us through four recent releases including “Raining Inside,” plus how he recorded them in a small home studio setup with serious players and real feel. You'll hear him perform “Raining Inside” live, unpack the story behind it, and share what it takes to build a dependable band in the Texas country scene. We also go deeper than music: John shares why he joined the Army, how fast he deployed, what adjusting back to civilian life can look like, and the everyday habits like time management that still shape his career. If you care about independent country music, Texas country songwriting, and the real life behind the stage lights, this conversation delivers.  Subscribe to Backstage Pass Radio, share this with a country music fan, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show. In this episode, I sit down with drummer David Northrup for a deep and wide-ranging conversation about groove, longevity, and serving the song. David has built an incredible career by doing precisely that, whether he's playing traditional country, blues, soul, or roots-based music. We start by talking about his current work with Joe Nichols, why it's such a musical and personal fit, and what it means to work for an artist who values authenticity, consistency, and real country music. David shares stories from the road and explains why being a good human is just as important as being a great drummer. We spend time digging into David's early musical influences growing up in central New York, where constant exposure to Motown, singer-songwriter records, pop radio, and classic albums shaped his musical instincts. David talks about learning by listening, studying album credits, and developing a deep appreciation for feel and style long before social media or online tutorials existed. He reflects on how that environment taught him to truly listen, absorb, and respect the music rather than chase trends.David walks through his path to becoming a professional drummer, from starting in school band programs to a pivotal moment when he saw Chuck Mangione perform while in college. That experience helped him realize music was the path he needed to take seriously. We talk about the importance of mentors, including teachers who challenged him when he wasn't ready and supported him when he was, and how discipline, fundamentals, and humility played a massive role in his development. We dive deep into David's years in Nashville, including his first five years building connections, studio work, and eventually landing his long-running gig with Travis Tritt. David explains how Nashville truly is a five-year town, why patience matters, and how preparation and professionalism keep you working once you get the call. We also talk about his deep admiration for drummers like Carlos Vega, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Jordan, Russ Kunkel, and others, and why groove, taste, and feel will always matter more than flash.A significant highlight of the conversation is David's time touring with Boz Scaggs. He shares what it was like to step into such an iconic musical legacy, learn to play with conviction at very low volumes, and work alongside world-class musicians night after night. We talk about why playing the room matters, how restraint can be more complicated than power, and why those lessons apply to every drummer at every level. We also spend time talking about David's solo record Shapes, including how it came together over many years, the musicians involved, and why recording live, organic performances was central to the album's sound. David explains his philosophy of making music that's groove-focused, accessible, and enjoyable for listeners beyond just musicians. We close by discussing teaching, clinics, the importance of shuffle feel, regional time concepts, and the soft skills that help musicians not just get gigs but keep them. It's an honest, thoughtful conversation packed with wisdom for musicians and music lovers alike. To learn more about David, visit his website. From doing laundry and cutting film to strategizing alongside one of the most dynamic head coaches in college basketball, Coach Jake Whitehead has mastered the art of turning humble beginnings into high-level success. In this episode of SportsLifeTalk's You Got Next, we dive deep into Jake's rise from a homeschooled kid in Illinois to an assistant coach under Coach Yo at Ole Miss Women's Basketball, one of the most exciting programs in the country. His journey is raw, unconventional, and proof that passion plus patience always wins.Jake didn't have the traditional road into basketball. He wasn't a high school star or a college athlete — he started as a manager at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), doing the behind-the-scenes work no one else wanted. Laundry. Gear. Film breakdown.“It wasn't glamorous, but I knew this was my way in,” he says.Guided by mentors who saw his hunger, Jake leaned into video coordination, learning the analytics, patterns, and tendencies that define elite basketball. His eye for detail and relentless drive opened the door that would eventually lead him to the sidelines in Oxford. Before he ever drew up plays, Jake was building scouting reports. His experience as a video coordinator gave him an edge few coaches have.“You watch enough film and you start seeing the game differently,” he explains. That skill became his superpower. Now as an assistant coach, Jake uses analytics and film study to help Ole Miss outthink and outplay the competition — from breaking down opposing offenses to identifying hidden edges that win games.Working under Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin — affectionately known as Coach Yo — has been transformative. Her energy and fearless leadership have made Ole Miss one of the toughest programs in the SEC.“She's fearless,” Jake says. “Her leadership makes it easy to recruit and win here. My job is to make her life easier and help this team achieve greatness.”Together, they've built a culture defined by discipline, joy, and relentless competitiveness — a mix that's propelled the Rebels toward consistent national relevance and their sights firmly set on a Final Four run.For Jake, success isn't just about strategy — it's about people.“You've got to meet people where they're at,” he says.Whether it's mentoring players, recruiting future stars, or connecting with families, his approach is rooted in understanding and empathy. He's not just coaching basketball — he's shaping young women to win in life. When he's not in the film room, Jake keeps it country. His playlists feature Eric Church, Morgan Wallen, and Travis Tritt, while “Jesus Walks” by Kanye West serves as his personal anthem of faith and perseverance. And if you're ever in Oxford? Find him at Old Coop Wings, where lemon pepper and garlic parmesan are the go-tos.

https://www.drewparkermusic.com It takes some folks 10 years to make a name for themselves in Music City, but in the three short years that Drew Parker has lived in Nashville, TN, he has been able to accomplish things he never dreamed were possible.Coming from a small, unincorporated town of Stewart, Georgia (located in Covington, Georgia), Parker began singing at age 3 in front of small church crowds. Over the years, he began to build his confidence and, at age 14, he decided to pick up a guitar and teach himself how to play songs from his inspirations, such as Keith Whitley, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, and Alan Jackson. At age 18, he expanded his musical abilities and learned to play piano, both of which he still uses today to craft lyrics and rhymes into songs. Parker made the move to Nashville, Tennessee in 2015 and signed a publishing deal with RiverHouse/WarnerChappell in September of 2017. He is a co-writer on Luke Combs' debut platinum record “This Ones For You”, Jake Owen's single “Homemade” and Luke Combs' “1,2 Many”. Aside from his cowboy hat and boots, Drew Parker is the definition of true country. He is genuine, honest, and carries an old soul that resonates with many. He is on the rise and sees no end in sight. MUSICLYRICAL WORD-SMITHING IS A COMMODITY HOW MET LUKE COMBS?OLD SCHOOL ARTISTS YOU ADMIRED MOST? GDP Script/ Top Stories for September 13th Publish Date: September 13th PRE-ROLL: From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, September 13th and Happy Birthday to Joni Sledge I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Health insurance changes coming to Georgia Paraglider hospitalized after crash at Barrow County Airport Peach Bowl and College Football Playoff Foundation team up for makeover at Lilburn Middle School All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Health insurance changes coming to Georgia Brace yourselves, Georgia. Health-care advocates are sounding the alarm: insurance rates on the government marketplace are set to spike next year. Why? Insurers blame federal budget cuts and the end of COVID-era tax credits, according to Anthony Wright of Families USA. And who’s hit hardest? Folks without job-based coverage—think restaurant servers, gig workers, barbers, plumbers, and other self-employed Georgians. The numbers are grim. KFF says half a million could lose coverage, while Georgians for a Healthy Future estimates 340,000, with rates jumping 75%. STORY 2: Paraglider hospitalized after crash at Barrow County Airport  A paraglider crashed at Barrow County Airport in Winder on Thursday afternoon and was rushed to the hospital, according to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office. Details? Pretty scarce. Deputies and firefighters got the call around 1:04 p.m. about the crash. When they arrived, the man was breathing but unresponsive—scary stuff. He’s now in the hospital, and the FAA is stepping in to investigate what went wrong. Sheriff Jud Smith praised the quick-thinking citizen who called 911, saying their actions helped first responders get there fast. STORY 3: Peach Bowl and College Football Playoff Foundation team up for makeover at Lilburn Middle School Lilburn Middle School just got a serious upgrade, thanks to Peach Bowl, Inc. and the College Football Playoff Foundation. As part of their Extra Yard Makeover initiative, the school’s STEM lab was completely renovated—and unveiled Tuesday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Students and teachers got their first look at the revamped space, and let’s just say, jaws dropped. The $200,000 partnership has already transformed eight schools, including Hope Hill Elementary and North Clayton Middle. Oh, and one lucky teacher? Surprised with $1,000 for classroom projects. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets 9 STORY 4: Hussey Gay Bell expands Duluth architectural studio with addition of Victor Rodriguez Hussey Gay Bell has welcomed Victor Rodriguez as a project manager in its Duluth office, and it sounds like they’ve landed a pro. Rodriguez, who calls Duluth home, brings nearly 10 years of experience in architectural design, project management, and permitting. He’s got a knack for navigating codes, reviewing shop drawings, and keeping clients happy—basically, the guy knows his stuff. A Kennesaw State grad with additional training in project and practice management, Rodriguez is set to make waves in the firm’s seven core markets, from healthcare to transportation. Founded in 1958, Hussey Gay Bell now operates eight offices across the Southeast. STORY 5: Valdosta State president leaving for California post Valdosta State University President Richard Carvajal is heading west. Come January 20, he’ll take the helm at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, leaving behind nearly a decade of leadership at VSU. Carvajal stepped in during a rocky time in 2017—he was the seventh president in just eight years—and brought much-needed stability. Under his watch, VSU hit milestones: record graduate enrollment, campus renovations, and a $39 million performing arts center in progress. Break 3: STORY 6: Buford woman wins Mrs. America crown Growing up in tiny Glennville, Georgia, Paige Ewing (née Armstrong) dabbled in pageants—Junior Miss Tattnall County, Miss Pinewood Christian Academy, even Miss Georgia Onion (yes, that’s a thing). At 18, she won Miss Tattnall County and competed in Miss Georgia, but after that? She figured her pageant days were over. Life moved on. Fast forward to this summer: Paige, now a wife, mom, business owner, and grief coach, was crowned Mrs. Georgia. Then, in August, she took the national title—Mrs. America. This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring our own podcast host and trumpeter John Snell, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Getting to know John Snell"   Who is the man behind the microphone?   You've been asking for a long time, 12.5 years and 138 episodes in fact, and today's the day: it's time to put John Snell himself on the other side of the bell!   John is the steadfast presence at Bob Reeves Brass, from the shop to the studio to the numerous conferences and events he attends every year. Many of you have met him in person over the years, and with our increasing number of video episodes, you have a better sense for what he's like.   Yet his story has only emerged in bits and pieces over all that time and all those episodes, and warrants the spotlight just as much as any of the wonderful guests who have stopped by the podcast since 2013.   And who better to interview John than the gregariously awesome Vinnie Ciesielski, who was himself a guest on The Other Side of the Bell, Episode #93 back in September of 2021.   Vinnie and John chat about how John grew up to follow in the footsteps of his professional trumpet-playing father, Keith Snell, yet forged his own path through his education, musical styles and interests, before a sudden complete career U-turn that proved to give him another solid professional foundation, alongside his continued passion for music.   And behind it all, for the past 20+ years, there's been Bob Reeves Brass. John talks about first meeting Bob and being taken under his wing, before returning with a law degree in hand to rescue the business, provide stability for Bob and his wife into retirement, and maintaining Bob's principled approach to business and customer service.   Thank you to Vinnie for encouraging the idea and bringing this episode to life, and thank you to all of our wonderful listeners and viewers for your continued support.   Don't forget to share this and other episodes with your friends in the trumpet world and beyond, and send us your thoughts and feedback! They cover everything: going viral on TikTok (by accident), how a single prayer led to a million views, and what it's like when country legends like Gary Gentry, Bobby Braddock, and even Travis Tritt start calling you. This one's about persistence, storytelling, songwriting, and chasing something real—whether you're holding a Telecaster or telling stories on TikTok. Also: Nashville hot chicken, and why aging punk rockers inevitably fall in love with country music. Whether you're a guitar nerd, country fan, or just someone trying to make something happen… this one's for you. Support The Show And Connect! The Text Chat is back! It's another packed episode, thanks for listening! Ace Frehley starts us off. He's playing Soaring Eagle on the 29th, the last gig of the year for him. That show is with Stephen Pearcy of RATT. He told me he's working on his next album, Origins 3. We talked about the crazy drones flying around by his house. We also talked about the days of KISS and how big they were here in Detroit and Michigan. Ace is so much fun to talk to. Legend! Bumblefoot is up next, with his new album dropping on January 24th. It's called Bumblefoot...Returns. It's his first instrumental album in 30 years! He's got some heavy-hitting guests on it as well. We talk about the video game surrounding the album, how it's coming out on vinyl and cassette, and more. To say he's one of the most talented guitarists out there is an understatement. Oscar and Alyse from a pretty new band called LYLVC join me next. They formed during the pandemic and have been making some real noise lately. Their latest song is out, called "XXX". They've had the chance to work with some great producers making new music, which we discussed. Alyse tells me about her appearance on the TV show Don't Forget the Lyrics. They're playing the Machine Shop in Flint on December 20th. Speaking of the Machine Shop, Jackyl played there on Thanksgiving Eve. Before that, I spoke with Jesse James Dupree. He spoke of his friendship with Travis Tritt, the only hockey game he'd attended, his home studio and the legends who've recorded there, and his connection with Harley Davidson. Thanks for listening!

https://youtube.com/live/4_iffBMGZ5s You wouldn't believe Mico Klokoc Thompson's story—it's like something out of a rock and roll legend. This guy's been hooked on electronics since he was just a little kid, probably around six. His grandfather used to tinker with tube TVs, radios, and ham radio setups, so there was always some cool gadget to mess with at his grandparents' house. Oh, and his grandfather also played a little guitar, which kind of planted the seed for Mico's lifelong love of music and tone. By the time he was 12, Mico was already reaching out to big names in the industry. He wrote to Ken Fischer from Trainwreck Circuits and even the artist relations team at Kramer Guitars. And get this—Ken Fischer actually responded and told him to stay in touch. Talk about a promising start! Fast forward a few years, and by 17, he was on the road with Aerosmith, working behind the scenes while Guns N' Roses was the opening act. Can you imagine being a teenager and getting that kind of backstage pass to rock history? From there, he jumped into the Hollywood music scene, fixing tube amps and working with local guitarists at Amp Crazy. It didn't take long for Mico to start rubbing shoulders with the biggest names in the game. He worked with Eddie Van Halen, Ratt, Poison—you name it. And when he moved to Nashville, he didn't slow down. Instead, he started working with country legends like Marty Stuart, Travis Tritt, and Merle Haggard. But Mico's not just some behind-the-scenes tech guy. He's been a key player at Trainwreck Amplifiers for years, partnered with One Control Effects and Amplifiers, and he even designs his own amps now. He's all about restoring vintage gear and helping musicians perfect their tone. I mean, he's worked with everyone from Ted Nugent to Pat Travers, and even up-and-comers like Benito Di Bartolie and Dante Bonasera. Mico's the guy you call when you're serious about tone. Whether it's building a custom amp, restoring a classic, or just dialing in that perfect sound, he's the one who makes it happen. He's a legend in his own right. "Talking Guitars" is your go-to show for all things guitars and guitar gear. However, he soon realized where he really wanted to be was on stage performing. Tritt started playing guitar at a young age - getting lessons from his local guitar shop and from his dad. In addition to growing up on the road learning from some of country music's greatest talents from side stage, Tritt also counts Motörhead, Ozzy Osborne and Stone Temple Pilots as some of his musical influences. He is forging his own path by melding his favorite things and is very clear when he says “I'm doing it MY way.” Tritt believes being “genuine and authentic” in life and music is a top priority.‍Georgia native, Tristan Tritt, is a Rock artist, songwriter and musician. If the name sounds familiar it's because Tritt is the oldest son of country music legend Travis Tritt, and the brother of country artist Tyler Reese Tritt.
