GDP Script/ Top Stories for September 13th Publish Date: September 13th PRE-ROLL: From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, September 13th and Happy Birthday to Joni Sledge I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Health insurance changes coming to Georgia Paraglider hospitalized after crash at Barrow County Airport Peach Bowl and College Football Playoff Foundation team up for makeover at Lilburn Middle School All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Health insurance changes coming to Georgia Brace yourselves, Georgia. Health-care advocates are sounding the alarm: insurance rates on the government marketplace are set to spike next year. Why? Insurers blame federal budget cuts and the end of COVID-era tax credits, according to Anthony Wright of Families USA. And who’s hit hardest? Folks without job-based coverage—think restaurant servers, gig workers, barbers, plumbers, and other self-employed Georgians. The numbers are grim. KFF says half a million could lose coverage, while Georgians for a Healthy Future estimates 340,000, with rates jumping 75%. STORY 2: Paraglider hospitalized after crash at Barrow County Airport A paraglider crashed at Barrow County Airport in Winder on Thursday afternoon and was rushed to the hospital, according to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office. Details? Pretty scarce. Deputies and firefighters got the call around 1:04 p.m. about the crash. When they arrived, the man was breathing but unresponsive—scary stuff. He’s now in the hospital, and the FAA is stepping in to investigate what went wrong. Sheriff Jud Smith praised the quick-thinking citizen who called 911, saying their actions helped first responders get there fast. STORY 3: Peach Bowl and College Football Playoff Foundation team up for makeover at Lilburn Middle School Lilburn Middle School just got a serious upgrade, thanks to Peach Bowl, Inc. and the College Football Playoff Foundation. As part of their Extra Yard Makeover initiative, the school’s STEM lab was completely renovated—and unveiled Tuesday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Students and teachers got their first look at the revamped space, and let’s just say, jaws dropped. The $200,000 partnership has already transformed eight schools, including Hope Hill Elementary and North Clayton Middle. Oh, and one lucky teacher? Surprised with $1,000 for classroom projects. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets 9 STORY 4: Hussey Gay Bell expands Duluth architectural studio with addition of Victor Rodriguez Hussey Gay Bell has welcomed Victor Rodriguez as a project manager in its Duluth office, and it sounds like they’ve landed a pro. Rodriguez, who calls Duluth home, brings nearly 10 years of experience in architectural design, project management, and permitting. He’s got a knack for navigating codes, reviewing shop drawings, and keeping clients happy—basically, the guy knows his stuff. A Kennesaw State grad with additional training in project and practice management, Rodriguez is set to make waves in the firm’s seven core markets, from healthcare to transportation. Founded in 1958, Hussey Gay Bell now operates eight offices across the Southeast. STORY 5: Valdosta State president leaving for California post Valdosta State University President Richard Carvajal is heading west. Come January 20, he’ll take the helm at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, leaving behind nearly a decade of leadership at VSU. Carvajal stepped in during a rocky time in 2017—he was the seventh president in just eight years—and brought much-needed stability. Under his watch, VSU hit milestones: record graduate enrollment, campus renovations, and a $39 million performing arts center in progress. Break 3: STORY 6: Buford woman wins Mrs. America crown Growing up in tiny Glennville, Georgia, Paige Ewing (née Armstrong) dabbled in pageants—Junior Miss Tattnall County, Miss Pinewood Christian Academy, even Miss Georgia Onion (yes, that’s a thing). At 18, she won Miss Tattnall County and competed in Miss Georgia, but after that? She figured her pageant days were over. Life moved on. Fast forward to this summer: Paige, now a wife, mom, business owner, and grief coach, was crowned Mrs. Georgia. Then, in August, she took the national title—Mrs. America. This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring our own podcast host and trumpeter John Snell, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Getting to know John Snell" Who is the man behind the microphone? You've been asking for a long time, 12.5 years and 138 episodes in fact, and today's the day: it's time to put John Snell himself on the other side of the bell! John is the steadfast presence at Bob Reeves Brass, from the shop to the studio to the numerous conferences and events he attends every year. Many of you have met him in person over the years, and with our increasing number of video episodes, you have a better sense for what he's like. Yet his story has only emerged in bits and pieces over all that time and all those episodes, and warrants the spotlight just as much as any of the wonderful guests who have stopped by the podcast since 2013. And who better to interview John than the gregariously awesome Vinnie Ciesielski, who was himself a guest on The Other Side of the Bell, Episode #93 back in September of 2021. Vinnie and John chat about how John grew up to follow in the footsteps of his professional trumpet-playing father, Keith Snell, yet forged his own path through his education, musical styles and interests, before a sudden complete career U-turn that proved to give him another solid professional foundation, alongside his continued passion for music. And behind it all, for the past 20+ years, there's been Bob Reeves Brass. John talks about first meeting Bob and being taken under his wing, before returning with a law degree in hand to rescue the business, provide stability for Bob and his wife into retirement, and maintaining Bob's principled approach to business and customer service. Thank you to Vinnie for encouraging the idea and bringing this episode to life, and thank you to all of our wonderful listeners and viewers for your continued support. Don't forget to share this and other episodes with your friends in the trumpet world and beyond, and send us your thoughts and feedback! This week, in Pembroke, Kentucky, a very murderous evening, that leaves three people dead, including two of them being burned to cinders, leads investigators down a rabbit hole. The main suspect is an Army vet airline pilot, who insists it was his bigamist ex-wife, who was trying to frame him, but he's been in other trouble, including accusations of abuse & having classified documents. Will a shell casing & a dog tag be enough to convict him??Along the way, we find out that these small town festivals love a local band, that a shell casing that matches your gun seems to be pretty decent evidence, and that the bigger the crime, the more you claim it's a conspiracy against you!!New episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! It's another packed episode, thanks for listening! Ace Frehley starts us off. He's playing Soaring Eagle on the 29th, the last gig of the year for him. That show is with Stephen Pearcy of RATT. He told me he's working on his next album, Origins 3. We talked about the crazy drones flying around by his house. We also talked about the days of KISS and how big they were here in Detroit and Michigan. Ace is so much fun to talk to. Legend! Bumblefoot is up next, with his new album dropping on January 24th. It's called Bumblefoot...Returns. It's his first instrumental album in 30 years! He's got some heavy-hitting guests on it as well. We talk about the video game surrounding the album, how it's coming out on vinyl and cassette, and more. To say he's one of the most talented guitarists out there is an understatement. Oscar and Alyse from a pretty new band called LYLVC join me next. They formed during the pandemic and have been making some real noise lately. Their latest song is out, called "XXX". They've had the chance to work with some great producers making new music, which we discussed. Alyse tells me about her appearance on the TV show Don't Forget the Lyrics. They're playing the Machine Shop in Flint on December 20th. Speaking of the Machine Shop, Jackyl played there on Thanksgiving Eve. Before that, I spoke with Jesse James Dupree. He spoke of his friendship with Travis Tritt, the only hockey game he'd attended, his home studio and the legends who've recorded there, and his connection with Harley Davidson. Thanks for listening!
https://youtube.com/live/4_iffBMGZ5s You wouldn't believe Mico Klokoc Thompson's story—it's like something out of a rock and roll legend. This guy's been hooked on electronics since he was just a little kid, probably around six. His grandfather used to tinker with tube TVs, radios, and ham radio setups, so there was always some cool gadget to mess with at his grandparents' house. Oh, and his grandfather also played a little guitar, which kind of planted the seed for Mico's lifelong love of music and tone. By the time he was 12, Mico was already reaching out to big names in the industry. He wrote to Ken Fischer from Trainwreck Circuits and even the artist relations team at Kramer Guitars. And get this—Ken Fischer actually responded and told him to stay in touch. Talk about a promising start! Fast forward a few years, and by 17, he was on the road with Aerosmith, working behind the scenes while Guns N' Roses was the opening act. Can you imagine being a teenager and getting that kind of backstage pass to rock history? From there, he jumped into the Hollywood music scene, fixing tube amps and working with local guitarists at Amp Crazy. It didn't take long for Mico to start rubbing shoulders with the biggest names in the game. He worked with Eddie Van Halen, Ratt, Poison—you name it. And when he moved to Nashville, he didn't slow down. Instead, he started working with country legends like Marty Stuart, Travis Tritt, and Merle Haggard. But Mico's not just some behind-the-scenes tech guy. He's been a key player at Trainwreck Amplifiers for years, partnered with One Control Effects and Amplifiers, and he even designs his own amps now. He's all about restoring vintage gear and helping musicians perfect their tone. I mean, he's worked with everyone from Ted Nugent to Pat Travers, and even up-and-comers like Benito Di Bartolie and Dante Bonasera. Mico's the guy you call when you're serious about tone. Whether it's building a custom amp, restoring a classic, or just dialing in that perfect sound, he's the one who makes it happen. He's a legend in his own right. THE VIBE with Kelly Cardenas presents NEVER QUIT - TRISTAN TRITT Tritt went to the West coast to study music production and artist management after high school. However, he soon realized where he really wanted to be was on stage performing. Tritt started playing guitar at a young age - getting lessons from his local guitar shop and from his dad. In addition to growing up on the road learning from some of country music's greatest talents from side stage, Tritt also counts Motörhead, Ozzy Osborne and Stone Temple Pilots as some of his musical influences. He is forging his own path by melding his favorite things and is very clear when he says “I'm doing it MY way.” Tritt believes being “genuine and authentic” in life and music is a top priority.Georgia native, Tristan Tritt, is a Rock artist, songwriter and musician. If the name sounds familiar it's because Tritt is the oldest son of country music legend Travis Tritt, and the brother of country artist Tyler Reese Tritt. However, Tritt's heavier Rock driven performances have surprised fans who expect him to lean more towards his family's Outlaw Country music roots. https://www.tristantritt.com/ BESTSELLING BOOK “THE VIBE- the missing ingredient that changes everything” https://a.co/d/0PzQk6F JOIN THE VIBE COMMUNITY Https://store.kellycardenas.com/kelly-cardenas-membership BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE PODCAST MERCH http://KellyCardenasMerch.com Thank you to our sponsors FINDLAY VOLVO CARS LAS VEGAS Findlay Volvo Las Vegas Tableone hospitality Tableonehospitality.com THE MINA GROUP https://www.michaelmina.net Https://www.Secretknock.co Cardenas Law Group https://www.cardenaslawgrouplv.com BLING SHINE SERUM-The #1 seller of over 15 years and the only product to be endorsed by my MAMA! The Young Fables (TYF) create music with storytelling weaved into Americana roots music with pop sensibilities. East Tennessee (Maryville) natives, Laurel Wright and Wes Lunsford are influenced by timeless treasures like Patsy Cline, Bonnie Raitt, Glen Campbell and Chet Atkins. The duo's unique sound has resonated with audiences around the globe as live performances have become stages from which The Young Fables discuss themes and topics typically saved for the therapy couch. Strong advocates for mental health awareness, The Young Fables are focused on helping to erase the stigmas surrounding the topic. Recognizing the duo's advocacy, the pair were honored with The Troy Gentry Compassion Award in 2021 for compassion, commitment, kindness and love. The couple has dropped 3 full length albums Two, Old Songs, and Pages (the latter two collaborations with GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Mitch Dane). Their sound - a whimsical, distinguishable classic country-meets-Americana pop blend - was praised by iconic artists and taste-makers alike, with nine-time GRAMMY® Award winning artist Sheryl Crow tweeting, “Laurel's as good as any country singer out there!” Their releases opened the door for a Rolling Stone “10 Best Country and Americana Songs of the Week” nod, direct support for artists like Vince Gill, Amy Grant, and Rascal Flatts and an invitation from multi-platinum songstress Shania Twain to take part in the CBS showcase celebration Real Country. “Wes is a perfect partner for Laurel's voice. I fell in love with these guys as a genuine, authentic talent and sound,” mused Twain, and Travis Tritt added, “Our industry needs (TYF) right now! 2024 will see Wright and Lunsford releasing SHORT STORIES, the band's 4th studio effort, and their feature documentary 'The Fable of a Song', winner of the 2021 Nashville Film Festival Audience Choice Award. “Every album that we have released has become sort of a journal entry for us and Short Stories is the next chapter.” Wright reveals. “We feel fortunate to have a space to share our music and are so grateful that our story seems to be helping others with their healing. That's a reward unlike any other.” Learn more about The Young Fables at https://www.theyoungfables.com Host Lee Zimmerman is a freelance music writer whose articles have appeared in several leading music industry publications. Brent Mason has picked for the biggest and best names in country music: Alan Jackson, Willie Nelson, Shania Twain, Brooks & Dunn, Blake Shelton, and George Strait are just a few of the country stars on whose records you can hear Mason's Fender-on-Fender fretwork. But his solo on “Southbound Train,” the closing track on Travis Tritt's 2000 record Down the Road I Go, might be his hottest work of all. As Mason explains, the song scoots along at his favorite country tempo—a Cajun two-step, Mason says—which provides the rhythmic framework for his face-melter lead. Mason says the melodic and structural components came in part from his familiarity with jazz, and the mixing of jazz and blues with his usual twangy conventions. In fact, Mason's furious note barrages occasionally earned him some raised eyebrows (and some choice words from Conway Twitty) in the more traditionalist Nashville studio system. This might be the toughest solo our host has taken on so far on Shred With Shifty. The key to wrestling it? “You gotta keep playing [it] til you wanna pull out all your teeth and hair,” says Mason. Which Nashville producers and stars would let Mason off-leash in the studio? How does a session ace deal with hand injuries? Listen on, shredders. And if you're brave enough, send in your take on Mason's solo. Click below to subscribe to the podcast!
