Crime Capsule is happy to introduce you to a new Evergreen Podcasts show, Something About the Beatles, from David Whelan. He was a successful documentary writer and producer in the UK when, as COVID hit, he began looking into the murder of John Lennon, prompted by a podcast interview he heard. What he discovered quickly led him into a four-year investigation, as he talked with witnesses who had never before spoken publicly.  About Something About The Beatles All episodes of SATB feature conversations. Sometimes they are with Beatles authorities: writers or academics who've done the research and come up with a thesis. Others are with folks in the business: musicians who were inspired by The Beatles and who've walked the walk – written songs, recorded records, gone on tour. They know the ins and outs of Beatles music. Then there are the Beatle witnesses: folks who knew the individual Beatles well, either by direct family relations (Mike McCartney, Jenny Boyd), working directly for The Beatles (Kevin Harrington, Chris O'Dell, Ken Mansfield, Chris Thomas, Alan Parsons, John Leckie, Tony King, and so forth) or else spending considerable time in their world (journalist Ray Connolly, photographer Ethan Russell, journalist Ivor Davis, photographer Tom Murray, filmmaker Paul Saltzman, Nancy Lee Andrews, May Pang, and so forth). These people come to SATB to share their insights and observations, bringing us that much closer to the world The Beatles created. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ken Mansfield has been "in the room" for several major cultural watershed moments. After a meteoric rise through the ranks at Capitol Records in the 1960s, where he worked with artists like Lou Rawls, The Band, and The Beach Boys, Ken was personally chosen by The Beatles to head their Apple Records enterprise in the US. He happened to be working at the Apple offices in London during the sessions that were captured for the Let It Be album and film, including their now famous live concert finale on the roof. Ken, long dubbed "the man in the white coat" was one of just a handful of people on that roof with The Beatles on that historic day – a day that long defined his illustrious career in the music business.   A few years later, Mansfield found himself in the midst of yet another musical reformation as his simultaneous production of the Waylon Jennings' album Ready For The Country and Jessi Colter's smash single “I'm Not Lisa" helped solidify the "Outlaw” sound as Country artists reclaimed Americana music from the overproduced and over-commercialized Nashville machinery. Join us for this expansive conversation – which traces Ken Mansfield's professional and personal journey – from the farm country of Idaho to the Hollywood Hills – to the "top of the world" a time or two. As he chronicles in his recent book, The Roof; The Beatles' Final Concert, Mansfield returned to that London rooftop to contemplate the impact of that day, those musicians, his varied experiences and relationships, and what it all might mean all these years later.   Full Show Notes, Music List, and a special Ken Mansfield Playlist are available HERE or at TrueTunes.com/BeatlesRoof   If you would like to support the show, please consider joining our Patreon community or dropping us a one-time tip and check out our NEW MERCH!

Tomorrow is the 50th anniversary of the release of the Beatles documentary, Let It Be. There were only about 20 people on the roof that day (including the band), and Ken Mansfield - as the head of Apple Records U.S. - was one of them. That's him in the white coat. He told me how, after a few days of preparation to shoot the performance for the ending of the documentary, it came *this close* at the last moment to not happening at all. I'll post the full, fascinating conversation tomorrow.

Ken Mansfield was the head of the U.S. branch of the Beatles' own Apple Records label. He happened to be in London on label business the week that the band staged the infamous rooftop concert as a way to end the Let It Be documentary. His association as a Beatles insider was about five years, beginning in 1966, and his stories are fascinating. The documentary was released on May 13th, 1970, so I gave Ken a buzz to talk about his time with The Beatles, and what it was like being on the roof that day (he's "The Man In The White Coat" in the photos). It's one of the most fascinating interviews I've ever had the pleasure of doing. Enjoy.

Wednesday marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the Let It Be documentary. I interviewed Ken Mansfield recently. He's known as "The Man In The White Coat", seen in the film of the Beatles legendary rooftop (final) performance. As the head of Apple Records U.S., he was a band insider, and the conversation is one of the most fascinating I've ever had. I'll post the whole thing Wednesday, but a couple of teasers first. It was Ken's job to drive the boys around Hollywood to show them the sights. The band was staying at a rented home, and Ken told me this story that shows even up in the hills, in a walled yard, the Beatles weren't safe from the fans.

Apple Records former US manager Ken Mansfield takes a touching and comprehensive look back on one of Rock ’n’ Roll’s most significant events, while bringing an insider’s perspective to the days leading up to those 42 fascinating minutes of the Beatles monumental Rooftop Concert. There are moments in time that cause us to stop and take notice of where we were and what we were doing when they happen in order to commit the experience to memory—how it made us feel, who was there with us, why it felt important. January 30, 1969 was one of those moments. There are those who were on the periphery of the event that day and heard what was going on; but as one of the few remaining insiders who accompanied the Beatles up onto the cold windswept roof of the Apple building, Ken Mansfield had a front row seat to the full sensory experience of the moment and witnessed what turned out to be beginning of the end. Ken shares in The Roof: The Beatles Final Concert, the sense that something special was taking place before his eyes that would live on forever in the hearts and souls of millions. As the US manager of Apple, Ken Mansfield, was on the scene in the days, weeks, and months leading up to this monumental event. In the 2nd of a quartet of shows recorded (in part) at the White Album Symposium at Monmouth University (as well as the 2nd in a trio of shows covering Apple in its 50th year), I speak with my friend, Ken Mansfield: former manager of US operations of Apple, as well as author of several books, including two published this year: a novel, Philco and a memoir, The Roof: The Beatles’ Final Concert. Ken is a natural storyteller as well as a confidant of the Beatles, whose accomplishments include work with artists ranging from the Beach Boys to Waylon Jennings. We cover it all here. NOTE: as pointed out in the show’s intro, field recordings are susceptible to issues beyond our control, in this case a fluctuation in the current every time the heat came on in the room we were in. That’s why you hear crackling/static noise throughout the first half hour. Like Live At Leeds, do not attempt to correct – Ben Rowling and I have already tried. Ken Mansfield – January 30th, 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the last time the Beatles would ever play together in a ‘live’ setting. It was on a rooftop of their record label, 40+ minutes, and audio that would eventually be used for the album, “Let It Be”. There were only a few ‘employees’ on the roof that day, and if you google photos, you’ll see a man with a white coat. Ken Mansfield worked for Apple Records and was there that day.
