When it comes to being more productive, everyone has an opinion. Some people say get your work done in the morning, others get work done after lunch. Some say make a list. Others say to work in time blocks. The advice is far reaching, it often conflicts, and is based on opinion. Everyone's model of productivity works for them, and then they proceed to inform you how to be like them. The issue is, not everyone is the same. Now, I love the tactical approach. Tips and tricks on how to operate, provided people can adjust and make them “their own,” can be very helpful. If nobody shared their learnings, then we wouldn't learn. Simple as that. But moving beyond the tactical approach is finding a rhythm. And when people come to me with productivity challenges, often times they are talking about their “rhythm.” They want a system - something to get them operating at a higher level; a silver productivity bullet. It may exist in Ithaca, NY. In this week's podcast, I chat with Nathan Walz, founder of Journey to Optimal Health, about light. Yes, light. Apparently, since I didn't pay attention at all in my science classes growing up, light operates on a frequency that adjusts during the day. And your body responds to these frequencies as part of your circadian rhythm. Nathan chats about how tapping into your circadian rhythm (something we are all born with and is our natural way), can do wonders not just to productivity, but to mental health as well. I will admit, I was skeptical going in. Typically when I hear about natural things, I discount it, simply because I chalk it up to “hippy theory” or pseudo-science or imagination. Thing is, Nathan has the science to back this up. And it makes a lot of sense. In the morning, as the sun is rising, light enters at frequencies and they change throughout the day. This tells your body to be tired or awake. We hear all the time about the dangers of technology and how it impacts our sleep. It's because the blue light from our phones gives off the frequency of morning light - which screws up our circadian rhythm. LED lights do the same thing. And once he got rolling, I was learning about all kinds of things that affect my rhythm. It's an interesting area of focus that I haven't heard much of before chatting with him: using your circadian rhythm to be more productive. I like it, and I'm going to explore it more. But in the meantime, listen to the podcast and see what small changes you can make to eliminate “blue light” - from changing light bulbs to getting filtered glasses. Most people don't want to hear it, but the mornings are most productive for many people, and light could play a big part in that. A legendary recording artist and songwriter for the Memphis–based Stax label, William Bell first found success with his own recording of “You Don’t Miss Your Water,” a song that would go on to be covered by Otis Redding, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Byrds, and others. He found chart success in the ‘60s and ‘70s with additional self-penned singles, such as the Top 20 hits “Everybody Loves a Winner,” “A Tribute to a King,” “Private Number,” and “Tryin’ to Love Two,” which hit #1 on the R&B chart and #10 on the pop chart. His Top 10 R&B hit “I Forgot to Be Your Lover” went on to be covered by Billy Idol as the Top 10 pop hit, “To Be a Lover,” and was reinvented once again when Jaheim sampled it in “Put That Woman First,” a Top 5 R&B hit and Top 20 pop hit in 2004. In 2016 Bell returned to the re-formed Stax label to release This Is Where I Live, an album of primarily original songs that featured William’s own interpretation of “Born Under a Bad Sign,” which was originally recorded by Albert King and went on to become a blues standard that was named one of the “500 Songs that Shaped Rock & Roll” by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. A partial list of artists who’ve recorded titles from the William Bell songbook includes Lou Rawls, Percy Sledge, Big Mama Thornton, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Rod Stewart, Etta James, LaVern Baker, Dusty Springfield, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Melissa Etheridge, Robert Cray, and Sturgill Simpson. Additionally, his songs have been sampled by Ludacris, Kanye West, and others. Bell was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. Now, Jones has returned with his first album on Lamon Records Nashville. A Mountain, A Struggle, A Tunnel, A Light was produced by Grammy nominee, Dave Moody. First single and video, “Walk On Me” were released in April 2014. The single is currently climbing the New Music Weekly country airplay chart and the Roots Music Report country chart.“The new direction will put me square down the middle of the Americana genre, a great place to be. Dave Moody has given me that slightly raw, organic sound that really pushes my vocals to the forefront. Fingers crossed, here we go !!”Jones, whether alone or a member of various bands in the past has written or co-written well over 100 songs. His prolific writing earned him 2 nominations and a subsequent win, for Songwriter of the Year, at the 2013 International Music and Entertainment Association (IMEA) Awards, 2 New Music Awards nominations (AC New Artist and AC Breakthrough Artist) and a 2014 Independent Country Music Association Award nomination for Best Americana Artist. His experience has taken him through various phases and musical endeavors including a stint during his younger years working in entertainment public relations in Los Angeles. With some success on college radio, Jones was also, as a member of a band called “Q”, involved with soundtrack projects on select MTV shows such as The Dennis Rodman Show, Cindy Crawford's “House of Style”, and the reality show Road Rules. His band was also used in the AON Films movie “Tainted Love”, directed by Mathew Ross. All these successes were accomplished while under the professional direction of industry representatives like N.O. Management based in London, England as well as Magic Music Management and Peter Baron Productions in New York.Before signing with Lamon, he had worked with Nashville producer Terry Wendt, a former bandleader for Shania Twain, and Chris Tristran, who produced his debut EP. His live shows have taken him to Nashville's CMA Festival in both 2013 and 2014, where he performed at BB King's Blues Club and the Tin Roof, as well as other top notch venues such as The Hard Rock Café in Philly, The Bitter End in NYC, and The World Café in Wilmington, Delaware. He has also performed at the prestigious Dewey Beach Music Conference, Singer Songwriter Cape May, and the Millennium Music Conference.
