A native of the Missouri Ozarks, she worked at the State Historical Society's Springfield Research Center before becoming the coordinator for the Society's Rolla and Springfield research centers. Haley Frizzle-Green holds a master's degree in library and information science from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Presently, she is an archivist for the State Historical Society of Missouri at the Springfield Research Center.

Michael Charge's passion for racing was evident to viewers the first time he appeared on Sky Thoroughbred Central. He successfully combines that passion with an in depth knowledge of north Queensland form to help punters identify winners on many tracks in the region. Caught up with the man recently to find out how it all started. Michael remembers his late mum's frustration when her son preferred Best Bets, Sportsman and Winning Post to school books. He talks about the vast mileage he travels to cover race meetings for Sky. Early days he would drive 700 kms to Rockhampton. That's no longer the case. Michael talks about his trackside presentations from a wide range of Queensland tracks- 26 so far with a total of 110 meetings all up. It's interesting to hear that he's careful not to over complicate things when analysing form. Michael's a little different to many form students in that he tends to ignore the market until arriving at a conclusion. He believes pre-post markets can influence a tipster's thinking. He talks of historic Norfolk Island- the place of his birth. He'll be returning soon for a special occasion. Michael talks of a relocation to Bundaberg where his parents bought a newsagency. His late father introduced him to the magic of the turf. He remembers tipping horses to people at age 8 or 9. The Sky host looks back on three special horses whose racing styles fired his interest. Michael talks of an enduring friendship with Bundaberg horse trainer Tina Cotsiopolous. He looks back on an early involvement in the Travel Agency business. Michael talks of his induction to the Bundaberg Race Club committee at just 21 years of age. Five years later he was honoured to be elected President.  The racing devotee talks of a move to Brisbane when an offer came from Peter Harney's Ambassador Travel operation.  During that time he negotiated sponsorship deals with the Townsville Turf Club whose CEO James Heddo decided to accept a role with the Bendigo Jockey Club. Michael bit the bullet and applied for the job. Michael talks of his marriage to Danielle and the subsequent arrival of daughter Lucy and son Lachlan. He says a massive track upgrade at Cluden Park was the highlight of his time with the Townsville Turf Club. Michael pays tribute to Party King, winner of three consecutive Townsville Cups. The third leg of the trilogy generated enormous crowd involvement. Michael still can't believe he's one of a chosen few tipsters to come up with a 100/1 winner. It's a good story. He acknowledges the talents of some special north Queensland horses in recent years. Michael pays tribute to his favourite jockeys and trainers. He makes special mention of Frank Edwards who's still riding winners in his sixtieth year. Lacey Morrison rates high praise. Michael acknowledges the talents of his great friend, ace race caller Tony Wode. He talks of a recent meeting with an old school friend at Rockhampton's Archer meeting. That friend, now a member of the Priesthood, reminded Michael of his foray into illegal bookmaking on the 1993 Melbourne Cup. Michael concludes with heartfelt praise for partner Tina. It's a laid back chat with a rising 50 year old whose career path was set in stone at a very early age.

Hey there friends and weirdos! This week on It Gets Weird Kyle tells Nile the story of Frank Edwards, a pioneer of news radio and an important figure in the early days of ufology. How did Edwards go from traveling with a snake oil salesman around Illinois to becoming a prominent UFO reporter and in the top three radio shows in the nation? We talk his involvement in the Kenneth Arnold sighting of 1947, the Washington Fly-Over of 1952, and how he got wrapped up in a ufologist conspiracy postmortem. All this and more!

When Bill Gargan was fired from Martin Kane he planned to star in a Broadway rendition of Doctor Knock. In late September of 1951, Gargan signed a one-million-dollar contract that made him the exclusive property of NBC for the next five years. The deal required him to participate in a minimum of four guest spots on radio and TV each year. At the same time, Gargan was invited by Frank Folsom of RCA to accompany him to Rome to meet the Pope. Along the way, Gargan went to Paris to appear in the October 7th, 1951 episode of The Big Show. He participated in a sketch involving a poker game with George Sanders, Fernand Gravey, and Meredith Willson. Two weeks after his Big Show appearance, William Gargan was starring in a new series for NBC. Launched as part of NBC's year-long Silver Jubilee, Barrie Crane, Confidential Investigator, first aired over NBC from New York on Wednesday October 3rd, 1951 at 10PM eastern time. Bill Gargan debuted as the detective opposite Mr. President on ABC, Frank Edwards on Mutual, and boxing on CBS. The show was directed by the just-heard Himan Brown. By 1952 Brown had been involved in radio for decades. The Barrie was inspired by the nickname of William Gargan's oldest son, then twenty-two. The title of the show was soon changed to Barrie Craig, Confidential Investigator. Episode three was called “The Judge and The Champ.” In conjunction with NBC's twenty-fifth anniversary, the network launched a series of both Radio and TV offerings highlighting the growth of NBC's technology, talent, infrastructure and advertising success. Block-sharing advertising was in full-effect. The network sold commercial time spots, rather than full shows and called it “Operation Tandem.” Gargan was back on The Big Show the next March 16th, 1952 to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with Tallulah Bankhead and good friend and fellow Catholic, Fred Allen. Now with transcription wide-spread, Barrie Craig could be heard on different days each week, based on the region. Listeners would also hear different commercials, depending on what local affiliate they were tuning into. These could also be a mix of local and national ad spots. Blocked-sharing was being used by the other networks. ABC touted theirs as 'The Pyramid Plan,' CBS as The Power Plan, and Mutual called their's MBS Plus. In a further refinement of MBS Plus, Mutual introduced an exclusive package of MGM programming for 1952. Both The Adventures of Harry Lime, and The Black Museum aired as part of this deal. For more information, tune into Breaking Walls episode 141. Launched with their tandem plan, NBC provided a "pay as you sell" opportunity for local affiliates. Local sponsors could pick from one-hundred-nineteen one-minute spots. The goal was to accommodate sponsors without a long contract. Craig occupied an office on the third floor of the Mercantile Building on Manhattan's Madison Avenue. Barrie Craig's writers included Frank Kane, Louis Vittes, John Roeburt, and Ernest Kinoy. William Gargan was supported by some of the finest east coast voice talents of the era. This included Santos Ortega, Elspeth Eric, Arlene Blackburn, Barbara Weeks, Joan Alexander, Parker Fennelly, Arnold Moss, Luis Van Rooten, and Herb Ellis. NBC announcers included Don Pardo and Ed King with John Daly as spokesperson for 1952 Pontiac spots and Carl Caruso for Bromo-Seltzer spots.

In July 1952 there were two days when UFOs flew right over the White House area. Truman gave an order for the objects to be shot down. This led to people all over sending telegrams to the White House pleading for Truman not to do it. Today I present a tape from Frank Edwards who was a major radio broadcaster of the 1950s. He also wrote a couple of UFO books. In this 1956 lecture in Detroit he talks about the Washington overflights, the shootdown order, and what Einstein told the President. What he said should be repeated to all the fearful military elements who actually believe they are going to send young Americans to fight whatever the intelligence is behind the UFOs. On June 4th, 1954 at 10PM, The Frank Edwards news program signed on from WOR in New York. During this month there were more than one-hundred-twenty major American cities with significant unemployment. The Secretary of Commerce officially announced the country was in a recession. Meanwhile, Vietnam was given technical independence within the French Union. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles (DUH LUSS) felt the U.S would have to send troops to Southeast Asia to prevent Communist expansion. In other news, on June 6th the San Francisco Chief debuted. On June 13th, NASCAR held its first ever event in Linden, New Jersey. It was won by Al Keller. That same day, the last steam locomotive ran on the Maine Central Railroad. And on Flag Day, June 14th, the words “under God” were officially added to the Pledge of Allegiance.
