Tough Love: Artist Management

Hannah Boren - Red Light Management As we enter a new year, I thought we'd refine some aspects and the overall approach to what we're doing here with this podcast. When I first envisioned this, I thought taking a seasonal approach to it would work best, coming up with topics such as “Origin Stories” and “Pivots”, but as it began to unfold, I've come to realize that each artist manager's store is so unique and inspiring in its own right, that it's best to let the discussion dictate the overarching theme. So, moving forward, we'll forgo the seasonal approach and do just that, let the stories take us where they may. To kick us off, I've invited a friend and former colleague of mine to join us today:  Hannah Boren.  As I mentioned at the top of our chat, I first encountered Hannah when she was a student at Belmont University in Nashville, and she became our first intern at NoiseTrade, a music discovery platform I used to run.  Her talents and intuition were evident even at this early stage, so I'm beyond thrilled that she's excelled in becoming an artist manager, working with another dear friend of ours, Aaron Sawyer, at Red Light Management.  I'll let Hannah share the rest of her journey, as we dig in.

Band Information Composed of New Zealander Nick Stone (vocals, guitar), Coloradan Dani Cichon (vocals, mandolin), and Michigan cellist Alex Stradal, this powerhouse trio has risen quickly through the ranks of roots musicians in their short two years as a band - including nominations as a rising artist by Nashville's top independent radio station (Lightning 100) in 2018, a "Most Wanted" Emerging Artist by Falcon Ridge Festival in 2019, and a top 10 artist by Buzz Music LA in 2019. The trio recorded their debut full-length album in Nashville TN with Grammy-nominated producer Matt Leigh, while touring throughout the United States and Canada. With elements of folk, blues, jazz, and classical, South For Winters's varying sound is united by delicate harmonies, intricate guitar-work, and earthy vocals. They had over $12,000 in donations for a Kickstarter Campaign that started the second the pandemic hit. They have received rave reviews from publications (listed below) and an outpouring number of support through social media and Spotify (133.8K listeners, 333.9K Streams, and over ~1000 followers which is still growing). Their first album single, “Twine,” premiered on Out From The Pine Box in April 2019 and was selected as a DJ Pick by Nashville's Lightning 100 Radio. Musical Notes Global premiered the trio's next album single, “Ten Black Crows,” and Paste's Noisetrade featured the live music video for the following release of “All We Have.” The subsequent single of “Devil is a'Calling” premiered on The Static Dive and was featured on BuzzMusic. In June 2020 the official music video for “Devil is a'Calling” debuted on Ditty TV's “World Premiere and was broadcasted through DittyTV's station, The Curve. Grateful Web premiered their single, “Always You” in July. Cold Stone Crazy interviewed the band about their story and album. Lastly, the single, “Stone”, was premiered through American Songwriter and performed on Nashville Today The album was premiered on Vents Magazine and was played from start to finish on DJ Bruce Swan's acclaimed radio station WPKN - "Music My Mother Wouldn't Like”. The album Luxumbra is as diverse as its title implies. Luxumbra is trio South for Winter's debut full-length album, and they leave nothing on the table as they pack storytelling lyrics, complex instrumentation, and weaving harmonies into all thirteen tracks on the record. Deftly dancing from bluesy murder ballads to airy acoustic folk; from traditional stomp and holler to smooth jazz; from stripped-back, acoustic instrumentals to heavily layered folk-rock, and everywhere in between; Luxumbra is a true representation of the unique and eclectic sound that has become the signature of the band. Luxumbra was recorded at The Tracking Room studio in Nashville TN and produced by GRAMMY award-winning Matt Leigh. Singles from the album have been featured on sites such as American Songwriter, Grateful Web, DittyTV, and WSMV's Today in Nashville. Linked is the album artwork and a photo of them, along with their music - please use any of the photos to promote the show. View them here. (DO NOT SHARE PLEASE) Listen to Luxumbra on Spotify here.

This Week’s Guest Born in Memphis, TN, to a classically trained pianist, Derek took to music naturally, as both a musician and a songwriter. After taking a single guitar lesson, he was self-taught, and by his sophomore year in high school was on the road as a touring musician. Derek joined his first band, Caedmon’s Call, in 1993. They were signed to Warner Alliance three years later. Two years following, in 1998, the band’s self-titled release won Gospel Music Awards Modern Rock Album of the Year. Following numerous other, critically acclaimed releases with Caedmon’s Call, Derek struck out on a solo career in 2001. He would go on to release four studio albums with label INO, before going independent to self-release five additional records. His latest, Targets, is slated for 2019. In addition to Derek’s songwriting, recording, and touring career, in 2008, he founded NoiseTrade, a pioneering direct-to-fan platform, which was acquired by Pledge Music in 2016. Brian is the founder and lead pastor of Word of Life Church, a non-denominational Christian congregation in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Brian and his wife, Peri, founded the church in 1981. Brian is also the author of several books, including, Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God, Water to Wine, A Farewell To Mars, Beauty Will Save the World, and Unconditional?: The Call of Jesus to Radical Forgiveness.   You can find all Brians work at https://brianzahnd.com/ and I encourage you to connect with him on Twitter as well at @BrianZahnd   Special Music for this episode was provided by artist Dane Joneshill. Dane's songs paint pictures of places and people, times and moments that are rich with color and movement. With a lyricism more akin to a novelist than a songwriter, his songs are at once wry, charming and bittersweet. Like a Steinbeck book, they walk the tension of darkness and loss in order to find the lights of hope.   If you like the music Dane is currently giving it away at NoiseTrade for a limited time; but if you're like me you'll be happy to pay some dollars.    Find Danes Music on iTunes as well as Spotify and Amazon and his official site at https://www.danejoneshillmusic.com/about and everywhere else music is enjoyed. I had the honor to  sit down with Dr. Richard Beck to have a discussion on how learning to see past that and embracing the 'other' can help us so much...and if we are looking...we find Jesus. Richard's area of interest--be it research, writing, or blogging--is on the interface of Christian theology and psychology, with a particular focus on how existential issues affect Christian belief and practice. Richard's published research covers topics as diverse as the psychology of profanity to why Christian bookstore art is so bad. Marketing for Musicians with Bree Noble

On this episode of Rhodes to Success, I interview Bree Noble, who is an entrepreneur, musician, and speaker. Bree is the founder of Women of Substance Radio, an online radio station that promotes quality female artists in all genres. She also launched the Women of Substance Podcast that ranked number four overall on iTunes New and Noteworthy. Bree draws on her extensive experience running her own music business, both as a solo musician and industry professional, to train and mentor other female musicians.      Main Questions Asked: What do you do 9 to 5, and what is your business made up of?  Is consulting, coaching, and creating courses how you generate revenue in your business? Tell us more about your life as a musician. Is that what you help musicians with most? Finding their voice, what to tell, and how to tell it? How does someone create a bio that is going to stand out?  How is marketing a musician different from marketing a business, product, or service that is not the identity of the person selling it?  Why is marketing hard for musicians, and why don't they like it? Tell us more about the Women of Substance radio station.  How did you grow your audience and what marketing was involved in building the community?  Talk about the relationships lifecycle that you build with the musicians.  Are you mainly focusing on musicians who don't have a record deal or manager? Is it strategic to build your consulting and courses?   Key Lessons Learned: Bree does five podcasts a week, and tries to fit it all in one 8-hour ‘podcasting' day. If you don't figure out how to make money in the music industry, then you are not going to have a career.    Writing a Non-Generic Bio There are hundreds of thousands of independent female artists, so don't be generic! You need to find a unique angle.  When writing your bio, start with your super fans, even if they are your family members, and find out what resonates with them and stands out in your story.  Most people think that their life isn't that special, so work with an outsider to write your bio, as they can draw things out that you can't see.    Marketing and Musicians Nowadays businesses are becoming more about the identity of the person that sells it.  Musicians have the mindset that if their music is good, people will listen to it.  Regardless of how good your music is, the truth is that people aren't always going to find it. That's why record labels exist, as they will do all the promotion for you.  You need to be like a record label and become a promoter for yourself. This often involves building a team around you.  A lot of musicians feel that the ‘business stuff' dulls their creativity. If it does, get a team.    Women of Substance Radio Station  The mission is to make well known and indie artists equal.  The thing that helps most with marketing is that every artist has their own set of fans.  Bree leverages the artist's fans, and has a mailing list of around 4,400.   Relationship Lifecycle  Bree uses platforms that are built for radio, such as Noise Trade and Airplay Direct. The Woman of Substance shows are planned a few weeks in advance.  Bree then contacts the artist two weeks before the podcast goes live. On the day of the show, the artist receives an email telling them they are live, and Bree publicizes the artists on social media and is very specific with hashtags.  The target market finds Bree so she no longer worries about building it.    Subscribe to the show in iTunes or Stitcher Radio!   The music in today's episode was written by The Danger Os and produced by Nick Palmer. Derek Webb: Why You Should Be Your Own Patron and How to Adapt to a Constantly Changing Industry

Derek Webb has been one of my favorite musicians for as long as I can remember. He's always managed to release albums that spoke to exactly whatever stage of life I was in at the time. After a 20-year career, and dozens of albums (as a solo artist and with Caedmon's Call), Derek has decided to move more into the business side of the music industry as the President of NoiseTrade, a company he founded in 2006. We recorded this interview in person in Nashville a few months ago and I was amazed by how so many of his thoughts and experiences as a signer and songwriter applied to my life as an entrepreneur and online content maker. I have to admit, I was a bit star-struck during this interview and just sat back and let Derek do the talking. Which, as it turns out, was a good thing because he has so many great things to say about business, the struggle, and what it takes to make it. Here are some of my favorite bits from the show: On Career, Seasons and Success “You're not owed a career. It is incumbent upon artists, even great, talented artists, to also be smart and to also be tenacious and adaptive, and if you're not you're … you're probably not going to make it” “It used to be that the enemy was scarcity. Now the problem is obscurity.” “20 years ago in the music business there was the professional class and the amateurs and there was no in-between. There was only one marketing plan and that was swim up stream into the head of the sales curve. But then suddenly, everybody could make records, everybody could distribute records … So, there's finally a middle class. There's finally a blue color living to be made as an artist. You're not making a million dollars, you're not a household name, but you can make a great living playing music. You just have to take it seriously and work hard.” “If what you want is fame and fortune, that was never really real in the first place.” On Change “Achtung Baby is the sound of four men chopping down the Joshua Tree” ~ Bono “I love the idea, honestly, of 20 years on the music business being a footnote to a new season of entrepreneurial work for me.” On Audience Building and Compromise “I'm not trying to say anything to anybody. I don't have any kind of agenda that way, because it constrains the art. Like for me to say, ‘I'm going try to so this to that group', well now I've already put these narrow guardrails around and how can I now trust my creative instincts?” “There's nothing worse than being famous for something you don't like. I'd rather fail at trusting my instincts completely than succeed at compromising them.” “The job of any artist is to look at the world and tell us what you see.” “If the only choice is to start making compromises on the actual art, in order to sell more records and draw more people to me, that's just a line a couldn't cross.” On Being Your Own Patron “I want to keep making records that I want to make and if I can't make living from it, then I have to figure out something else to do, I have to figure out how to subsidize my own work.” “I subsidize my ability to continue making the kind of records I want to make and not have to put the burden of making a living on it.” As always, I had a great time talking to Derek. Enjoy the show! Show Notes Min 24:44: Why trust and attention are the most important currency.

LISTEN HERE: [audio http://rickleejames.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/episode-108_amy-savin-mp3.mp3] Amy Savin is a talented Christian musician who brings back to Christian music a depth of lyric and intricate artistry slightly lost in recent years. The songs are a beautiful hybrid of haunting and striking melodies set to lyrics that are made for fun listening and personal growth. Amy's voice and songwriting harkens back to the stylings of Nicole Nordeman with the addition of an understated falsetto range not attempted since the quiet ballads of Rachael Lampa. Amy's music is pleasantly unique thanks to her break-out vocal updrafts that pierce through tracks like “Hide Me”, “Fly Robin”, “Skylines”, and the Ed Cash smash “Hymn 177”. I have a great conversation with Amy and share a few of her songs on this week's episode of the Voices In My Head Podcast.Amy Savin's Web Site: www.AmySavin.com  "Freely you received, freely give." -- Matthew 10:8Get a free Easter album with Sheet music from Rick Lee James on NoisetradeEaster Worship Experience 2014 with Rick Lee James on Noisetrade.com[caption id="attachment_2603" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Click Here To Download Album and Lead Sheets[/caption][caption id="attachment_9210" align="aligncenter" width="215"] Get Rick Lee James' Email Updates[/caption][caption id="attachment_9147" align="aligncenter" width="300"] @RickLeeJames[/caption] This is a public episode.
