CUJO is a podcast about culture in the age of platforms. Episodes drop every other week, but if you want the full experience, we recommend signing up for a paid subscription. Paid subscribers also get access to our CUJOPLEX Discord and The Weather Report, a monthly episode series where we take stock of where the cultural winds are blowing and tell you what's rained into our brains. Catch last month's episode, where we dig into the rise of “waiting-in-line culture” in cities across America, the Spotify vs. Kalshi saga, Lebron James' post-factual free agency, and more.Hi pals. While we're off on vacation this week, we decided to do something a little different for this week's show.If you checked out last month's Weather Report, you probably heard that Andrea recently had the opportunity to participate in a multimedia installation at LA's National Museum of the Aftermath called “California Gothic” that dives into the question of what Los Angeles, and the lives of those who live there, will look like after collapse. The project is the brainchild of Gina Delvac and James Kim, two of the most creative minds working in audio storytelling today. For “California Gothic,” they commissioned audio creators, journalists, writers, and artists (Andrea included) to imagine a future where their favorite place in Los Angeles no longer exists, and then to create a speculative audio story about it — short prose, an intimate fiction scene, an ambient piece, or something surreal that doesn't fall into any of those. They ask: What memories reverberate from this place? What memories can still be heard? What have we lost? While “California Gothic” was (at the time anyway) a one-off event, we were so moved by the vision and creativity of these experimental pieces – which range from sound collages, to surrealist scifi, to letters from future selves – that we thought it would make for a sweet summer treat to feature them here on CUJO.Today's episode features six of those pieces, each imagining a different place in Los Angeles as remembered in a post-apocalyptic future. But first, Gina joins us for a quick chat about the meaning of “California Gothic,” why spoken audio should be recognized as an art form as much as a commercial output, and what's in store for the project beyond “California Gothic.” If you have ideas or want to get involved with future iterations of the project, reach out to Gina at gdelvac@gmail.com California GothicCuratorsGina Delvac is a native Angelena and podcast showrunner, audio creator, and curator. This is a great episode to share with anyone who is excited about a new attraction or label, but scared about being new or taking up too much space. Things Lulu Shapiro's 5,000 Flash followers don't know about her:  •  That the video of her with another girl was never supposed to go public.  •  That Owen definitely wasn't supposed to break up with her because of it.  •  That behind the carefully crafted selfies and scenes Lulu projects onto people's screens, her life feels like a terrible, uncertain mess. Then Lulu meets Cass. Cass isn't interested in looking at Lulu's life, only in living in it. And The Hotel--a gorgeous space with an intriguing, Old Hollywood history and a trust-fund kid to restore it--seems like the perfect, secret place for them to get to know each other. But just because Lulu has stepped out of the spotlight doesn't mean it'll stop following her every move.Look is about what you present vs. who you really are, about real intimacy and manufactured intimacy and the blurring of that line. It's a deceptively glamorous, feminist, emotionally complex, utterly compelling, queer coming-of-age novel about falling in love and taking ownership of your own self--your whole self--in the age of social media. Author Zan Romanoff is in conversation with Gina Delvac, founding producer of the Call Your Girlfriend podcast. Is it the raw talent or the intense dedication to performance? Or maybe it’s the attitude, the ‘IT’ factor, that charms audiences all around the world. From Aretha to Beyonce to Celine — we bring you podcasts about some of the mightiest women in music. . Making Beyonce: "Before the Grammys, before the platinum records, before Destiny's Child, there was just a shy girl growing up in Houston. We follow Beyoncé Knowles from the stages of local talent shows to her first crack at a record deal with the group Girls Tyme." . Dolly Parton's America: "One of Dolly's most iconic and successful songs is "Jolene," a song that, at first listen, is about a romantic rival trying to steal her man: a prime example of the classic "cheating song." But some see it as flipping a popular country music trope on its head. This idea takes shape when Nadine Hubbs, a professor at the University of Michigan, writes a fourth verse to "Jolene," which makes us reimagine Dolly's songs in entirely new ways." . Switched on Pop: The Switched on Pop team join forces with producer Gina Delvac to talk about the evolution of Rihanna and her much anticipated ninth studio album. . The Big Story: "Céline Dion has been many things throughout her career, but 'cool' has rarely been one of them. As one of the bestselling artists to call this country home Céline should have won us all over long ago. But she never quite broke through to the more cynical younger generation.Until that generation stopped being cynical, that is. It turns out Céline Dion was always cool. She was just waiting for us to come to her. And over the past few years, we have, by the millions." . Inside the Junos: "Alanis Morissette burst on the scene with 'Jagged Little Pill' and shook up the music world. Her magic says Chilly is, 'that strange yodel, that weird break in her voice that makes the vocal performance so raw and so real.'" . Heat Rocks: "Heat Rocks had always planned to sit down with DJ Lynnée Denise, an LA-based DJ and music scholar, but when Aretha Franklin passed on August 16th, we invited her to come talk with us about the Queen's life and legacy as part two of our series Women Behaving Boldly."
