Is It a Reboot or Is It a Renaissance?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 8, 2023 5:23

Happy 8th Podversary to Journey to There! Life is a journey full of twists and turns, and this podcast is no exception. New adventures, new lessons, and even some  life lessons from Finn! Catch up with Journey to There podcast host, Traci DeForge as she reflects on her journey through life's highs and lows and shares her musings on love, light, and joy Before I officially titled this episode I asked myself… is this new iteration of the J2T podcast a reboot or a renaissance? I felt like it was the latter but honestly, I had to look up the definition to be certain!  Ren·ais·sance /ˈrenəˌsäns/ a revival of or renewed interest in something. noun: renaissance; plural noun: renaissances Alas, it is a true renaissance!  Today is the 8th Podversary of Journey to There and with any anniversary comes reflection. Some of which are bittersweet. Why did I let some much time lapse? What if I had kept it moving forward? Is it worth bringing it back?  I need to reign in the negative self-talk that's ramping up fast because I want to indulge in some good ole fashion flogging with thoughts like, “I own a damn full service production company. How could I let this happen?” The answer is I didn't “let” anything happen. Life happened.  So, let's catch up!  The pandemic impacted everyone individually and collectively. I'm still sorting through the whirlwind effect it had on our lives including the fact that I still don't have my full ensemble of taste buds back but I digress.  My husband and I left the South Florida seaside life for the mountains of Taos, NM in 2020. This literal journey came with high expectations and ended with some bottomed out emotional disappointments.  My salve of course was to bury myself neck deep in Produce Your Podcast which resulted in 3X growth. Yay! But if you've listened to any previous episodes of this podcast then you know…building successful businesses has never been my challenge. Building a successful personal life is my never ending life lesson. Times haven't changed that much.  We left Taos and made a pit stop in Tucson, Az for a year. I was so checked out of my life that I literally justified the decision to live in a town that held no interest for me and wasn't remotely close to any of my friends and family. My brain told me none of that mattered because my focus needed to be on growing the business and that was all I was planning on doing anyway. Never underestimate the power of a work addicted brain.  And now, a new adventure has begun with an International move to Mexico. I'm reconnected to my seaside life which I affectionately refer to as my sea -soul life. Although, I'm still not remotely geographically close to friends and family- they are a lot more likely to visit me here. We also added a new addition to the family. His name is Finn and he is a 100lb Golden Doodle who everyone should take their life lessons from…  1. Always be up for an adventure  2. Every day brings a new chance to experience joy  3. If you live for naps and snacks the rest will take care of itself.  It's fair to say I'm still on my journey to there; thus the renaissance of the podcast. I've learned a few new lessons along the way and come through the other side of some stuff aka sh*t and ready to share my musings with you.  I'm looking forward to this next chapter of the pod. I want us to connect, hang out and learn from each other. I'm rebooting without putting any pressure on myself. I'm not setting any specific goals on how many episodes there will be and when they will be released. I'm giving myself grace. I'm giving myself permission to be creative in the medium I love the most without getting all caught up in (what I know first hand) it takes to build a successful podcast.  But really, isn't the definition of success relative?  I look forward to reuniting with some old friends from the podcast audience. I'm beyond giddy with anticipation of meeting the new friends I'll make along the way.  I'll sign off with one of my fav quotes that is one of my own. The life we create is based on the choices we make. Let's make choices that bring us love, light and joy and if we don't- let's ask for the courage to embrace the detours.  Cheers to what's possible!  Traci

During this last year, Covid taught us that we don't have control over our lives. We are living through anger, pain, sadness, and many other emotions including one of our most powerful emotions, vulnerability. The guest of today's episode is Cheryl Holling, an award winning voice over talent and host of the podcast 19 Stories; From Fear to Hope. In today's conversation, she shares why life is just beginning at 55 and how she is using her voice to create a platform for other people's stories to be heard.  In This Episode: [07:08] Cheryl's early radio days started when she decided to continue her dad's legacy.  [13:23] Cheryl is sharing other people's stories in her podcast 19Stories. But how did Covid-19 affect her life?   [20:20] The moment when Cheryl felt experienced imposter syndrome. [12:05] Once you understand the value of self-care, you will prioritize it more frequently.  [24:55] Why it's important to empower people to start where they are, regardless of who they are or how old they are.  [29:30] Although it's 2021, unfortunately, ageism is still present. [36:45] How Covid has influenced our ability to manage the fact that we don't have control over our lives. [42:00] What is Cheryl's message for those who want to move from fear to hope?   Key Takeaways: Life can actually begin at 55, no matter what we get from the messages in the media  Vulnerability is a gift we need to give to ourselves more often and inspire others to do the same.  Start where you are. No matter how old you are or what your background is. It's really never too late.    Bio:  Cheryl was packaged in Canada and distributed in Los Angeles. She grew up around music and acting, a passion for radio and the different mediums of communication, immersion in the arts & being of service. That translated into a diverse career both in front of and behind the mic and camera. It's also afforded her a unique insight into a myriad of production environments, the demands of each one, and the ability to use discretion, diplomacy, and respect for all the players involved in a project. Not to mention the value of delivering content on time.  Cheryl followed her love of music by doing national radio & record promotion for some of the top Jazz artists in the business and served as a music host on numerous NPR stations in California. She used her handmade leather satchel to carry music to the station and referred to it as her “sound satchel” and named one of her shows ‘The Sound Satchel'. It became the obvious choice when naming her business and voice-over studio. After 10+ years of promotion, Cheryl pursued her other love and went to New York for a brief study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Upon returning to L.A., she continued studying acting, improv with Second City, joined SAG, and enjoyed a modicum of success in tv & film before being presented with the opportunity to be an ad agency commercial producer.  Cheryl also had the great pleasure to work as Talent Producer on the Writers Guild of America, West, Award Show for two years, and prior to that, served as the show's first female live announcer.  She resides in the Bay Area and shortly after building her dream voice studio out of a former recording studio, the Tubbs fire affected the adjoining business and she moved her voice services in-house. She's also back doing some on-camera work for locally filmed productions and corporate training.  Links Mentioned: The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast - #1672 Iliza Shlesinger Good on Paper Movie  19Stories Podcast

She became fascinated by the way that science actually starts off as philosophy and turns into science and the idea of consciousness and unconsciousness to study the power of the mind became her main focus of study and research.  Dr. Campbell feels strongly about educating people on the way that the brain works. The key thing she wants people to understand is knowing the way the brain works so we understand our own behavior and others behavior. It's also important to understand that most of what our brain does is unconscious and that's why we can do things without really thinking about them.  Memory is dynamic and it can be easy to create false memories in our minds by hearing things from other people and soon enough your memories and theirs can be mixed together.     Bio: Dr. Ginger Campbell is best known for her highly respected podcast Brain Science, which launched back in 2006. Her book, Love To Lose: Love Your Life and Watch the Weight Lose Itself, explores precisely why you haven't been successful losing weight and how to change all that. Camille, based on her personal and professional experience, explains why diets will never, ever work, and exactly what does.  When we're going through a hard time, emotional eating and alcohol can be significant issues. Many women use food to fill a void; you can tell you're an emotional eater if you eat when you're not hungry, you devour every single thing on your plate, and the act of eating is what fills you up rather than what you're eating. Until you fix how you're eating, then what you're eating won't matter. First, improve your habits, then you can focus on what's on the plate.  Camille reveals a concrete plan to change your habits and break free from our downward spiral. Plus, she shows how to be your authentic self and live a fulfilling life that you truly love.

Denee King, Host of the Love Thy Number Podcast tells us how the discovery of her number was a game changer for her personally & professionally. Bonus...She gives me the skinny on my number and how has significantly influenced my life choices! An Invitation to Listen from my guest Denee... When I was introduced to the Enneagram almost 10 years ago I began to find answers to some of my own questions and it was absolutely liberating! I learned I wasn’t broken or heartless but that I process thinking from a different perspective than many others. I realized my ability (see how I put a positive spin on that? :-) to move, with lightning speed, from one great idea to the next didn’t mean I had ADHD or was scatterbrained! All those revelations just meant I was hard-wired for excitement and variety and I could now learn how to grow into the healthiest form of myself. Awareness became my greatest gift. I discovered the world of personality types and found a common thread with others who had my same fears and motivations. Learning the way other types process thoughts and emotions has helped me bridge the language barrier. That’s really what our ‘type’ is: it’s our native language. But trying to have relationship with those who speak a different language requires effort and a lot of love. This is the true beauty of the Enneagram. It’s a tool to help us know ourselves and, in doing so, we can know others…to love ourselves so we can share love with others. I make a fantastic lemon raspberry cake and a banana pudding that is to die for! If you’re visiting our home that might be all you need to know about me. :-)

    Rewrite Your Money Story!

In this episode: We're not taught about money. Whether male or female, where we're not taught in school. We're usually not taught at home so we don't have a foundation on which to really play some competence.  What we're getting taught about money is what we're told and what we're shown usually by our parents. We either do what our parents did, which could be good or bad, or we did the exact opposite. Did you know 90 percent of women have a fear that they're going to end up homeless and be a bag lady? The time is now to change women’s perception around money and the idea of shame. We can actually save too much. This can happen when we’re saving or we're not spending and the reason is coming from a place of fear or scarcity or that we don't feel secure. We've got to figure out what our triggers are, what is that story that we're telling ourselves around money and change that, because just getting out of debt or figure out a budget isn't enough. That's why athletes go bankrupt. That's why millionaire winners lose all their money. And that's why the average American racks up all their debt, pays it off, and then racks it back up again is because we're only treating the symptoms. We're not treating the issue, which is our mindset in this story we tell ourselves. Go out and try and find the best way to educate and inform yourself about money. Takeaways:  What I find is, we really like to avoid looking at our money. It's there's shame around it. There's guilt. We are brilliant, smart women that have 15 million other things that we need to do. So looking at our numbers kind of as the last thing that we want to do. So what I encourage someone to do is sit down at the end of the day without distractions. Have a glass of wine or three. And then really think about what was a really tough money experience that you went through and just write it all out. Write down all the details. No. Why did you go through this? What did you learn from it and what can you do differently? And I think by just facing some of these things a little bit at a time, you'll start to release that guilt and shame around these different money experiences. You need to really look at who you're taking money advice from. Like dating advice. You're not going to ask for dating advice from your friend that's been divorced seven times and has a string of first dates. So just like with your money, you don't want to ask somebody that you know is living paycheck to paycheck, drowning in debt and doesn't know how they're going to pay their next bill. Note to Self: Forgive yourself for you money mistakes. The shame is not serving you.

Living simply is not always easy. It is not a destination it is a journey. Before you even begin to  simplify you will need to identify how you define simple, where your life is complicated and explore why you seek simplicity in the first place. Humans have the tendency to over complicate the simple. About 5% to 7% of adults in the U.S. are pursuing some form of voluntary simplicity, according to Gerald Celente, director of the Trends Research Institute in New York. Simple is relative. Everyone’s definition is different. You need to know where your life is complicated before you can simplify it. How do you know when enough is enough? What does embracing simplicity mean to you? Why are you seeking simplicity? What are some steps large or small you can take to live more simply? How is your debt load? In a study published in 2000 in the journal Social Science & Medicine, researchers from Ohio State University and the University of Alabama found that people with a high ratio of credit card debt to income were in worse physical health than those with less debt. Can I ask you a question? Traci sits down to do her morning journal and an episode is born! It starts with a conversation with herself and then evolves into a fun experiment for you! Listen as she reads out loud from her journal pages and then proposes...Can I ask you a question? IN THIS EPISODE: I have a thought provoking but fine experiment for you to try. How I came about this experiment was actually a happy accident. You may know that part of my new activities I put it into my schedule this year includes writing and journaling 3 pages every morning before I check my email This morning when I went to do my page is something fascinating happened and I thought I would share it with you and see if you want to give it a try and see if you've found it to be as insightful as I did. When I do these pages I just sit down and the are completely blank. I just write the first thing that comes to my mind. This morning the first thing that came to my mind was... Can I ask you a question? which is feels a little odd when you're writing that and you're in THE ONLY ONE you're talking to! But I went with it because it was the first thing that came to my mind, right? I thought I might read you my actual journal entry based on the fact that I prompted myself with...Can I ask you a question. Now, don't get scared about getting inside of my head. It's not as dangerous of a place as you might think! Here we go. I write,  Can I ask you a question? What would happen if you release the fear   of any outcome?  And then did whatever you wanted to do with your time?  How would you spend it?  Would you still work as much as you do?  Or would you play more? What does play look like to you?  Do you know how to play? Would you play creatively? like go to a studio and play? Would you make art? Would you paint? Would you make jewelry? Would you put beads on canvas? Would you write what would you write about your experiences? What is the most profound experience that comes to mind? Is it painful? Has the pain fully healed? How could you heal it further? Can your pain help others avoid pain? Can it help them walk through it more swiftly more thoughtfully with a new perspective?  As pause here. I realize I can see the funnel of what's happening in this most unexpected experience.  My exercise of doing this first brought me back to dead center of an issue I struggle with constantly. How to play was the first thing that came up in the stream of consciousness. Yet as I kept asking myself the questions I expose the layers of what was really most important to me. Where I would spend my time and how I would spend it. What evolved out of the process was I would spend the time creating whether it is writing or art or even strategy in business.  I create with the sole purpose of healing my painful moments or so I can help someone else have a new perspective on their painful experiences or just even to give insight on how to avoid them altogether.  And then…. I realize I AM  doing what my soul craves.  I am using my voice my stories my lessons on this show.  Sharing them on this show which is really what feels like play to me. Problem solved in three pages or less. There you have it! How you spend your time is probably one of the most important questions you can ask yourself. Second only to... how would you spend it differently? Taking a look at how you spend it differently presents an area where you could either feel disconnected void or seeking something soothing to heal an avoidance which opens up the question... Why don't you spend your time on this one area you crave so much?  Is it based on fear? What is driving the fear? When you figure out the one thing that you need or want to do more of is also the one thing you do not know how to do. Literally, figuratively, physically, or  emotionally dont know how to do. Would you ask for help? Have you already figured it out. When you think about this does an emotional connection rise up with you and with this new idea that so strong telling you what it is that you want for yourself could this feeling desire craving lead to helping others regardless of the answers that you get from this fine. And trust me and it's fun experience. The most important part of it all is to start asking yourself these questions.

Well...That's Awkward. Having those difficult conversations help take care of you, your finances and your friendships! We teach people how to treat us whether it is in how we run our business, choose our relationships or maintain our boundaries. There are choices in how we choose to react to other people’s comments and opinions. A surefire tip on how not to take things personally. Leave toxic relationships. Don’t try to change them. It won’t work. Period. What is the one question that shuts down “scope creep”? How would you like to pay for that? Have you ever considered using a an autoresponder email as a response to all of your emails instead of just using it when you are on vacation? There are things in relationships that you have to discuss and if you don't discuss them you are opening up yourself to things happen like resentments and expectations which lead to you getting disappointed. Traci teaches Russ the appropriate way to apologize. HINT: If you use the word ‘but’ after the “I’m Sorry” it negates the apology. Takeaways: Have the awkward conversation.
