Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 14 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Our first segment of the Catalyst Podcast this week features Nicole Kavros as she sits down with Ilana Kaplan, a pop culture journalist and author of Nora Ephron at the Movies. A self-proclaimed rom-com enthusiast, Ilana has built a career writing about the things she loves, with bylines in Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, and Rolling Stone. They discuss Ilana's path into journalism, from her early beginnings to her debut book, and how she carved out a niche for herself as an expert in romantic comedies. Ilana reflects on the challenges of breaking into a competitive field, the evolution of media in the digital age, and the balance between passion and persistence that has fueled her career. Ilana also shares practical advice for aspiring writers—highlighting the importance of building marketing skills, developing a personal brand, and learning how to stand out in a crowded creative landscape. In the final segment of the week host Anisa Abdulkariem speaks with Marie Fitch, an interdisciplinary designer working across graphic and interior design. An Orange County native, Marie reflects on how the imaginative spark from her youth grew into a career built on curiosity and creativity, citing the influence of architects like Frank Lloyd Wright in her work. Together, Anisa and Marie explore the realities of pursuing a multifaceted creative career—balancing agency work, private client projects, nonprofit branding, and more. They also touch on the evolving design industry and the value of experimentation, self-education, and bold outreach alongside formal training. Marie's story highlights the resilience and passion it takes to carve out a unique path in the creative world, reminding listeners that imagination and determination can open doors in unexpected ways.

In this episode of the Workforce Connections Podcast, we meet Anisa Stechert, a Licensed Master Social Worker and psychedelic integration therapist at Nushama in New York City. Born in Las Vegas, Anisa moved to Florida at age 11 but has always considered Nevada home, with fond memories of Red Rock, Mount Charleston, and the YMCA swim team. She earned her B.A. in English in West Palm Beach and began her career as a Title I secondary English teacher, working with students facing trauma and systemic barriers. That experience shaped her passion for people's stories and led her to nonprofit leadership roles supporting adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, followed by research and policy work with the New York City Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice. Anisa went on to earn her MSW at Columbia University, focusing on advanced generalist practice and program development.Today, Anisa brings her lived experience, research background, and clinical training to her role at Nushama, where she helps patients undergoing ketamine-assisted therapy. She emphasizes that while ketamine provides a neurological “reset,” the true transformation comes through integration, the reflective process of meaning-making after treatment. She recently launched Mythnetics, a Nevada-based consulting practice that maps modern diagnoses to archetypal journeys, reframing them as invitations to healing. Nushama has engaged Mythnetics as it expands into Miami, where Anisa will play a leading role, with future plans to return her work to Nevada. During her recent visit, she connected with state leaders at the Governor's Office of Economic Development, the Vegas Chamber, LVGEA, and UNLV Economic Development to explore how her innovative approach could serve the community.Outside of work, Anisa finds grounding in yoga, reading, writing, creating botanical teas and essential oil blends, and long walks with her golden retriever, Annie Marie. Her advice to young people is simple but profound: pursue training, but more importantly, do your own inner work. Face your shadows, cultivate humility, and build authenticity, because guiding others through change requires first walking through it yourself.Nushama:https://nushama.com/
In this episode, Mardi Winder-Adams is joined by Anisa Palmer, whose life and work offer insight into the power of service, resilience, and purpose in the face of significant adversity. Anisa shares the path that led her to become a combat veteran, author, and dedicated social impact leader, with a special focus on health equity for underserved communities. Drawing inspiration from her father's entrepreneurial compassion and her mother's dedication to serving others even during her battle with breast cancer, Anisa learned early on the importance of connecting with and uplifting those around her. After two tours in Iraq, Anisa felt called to serve in a new way, driven by personal experiences that echoed her mother's influence during her deployment. The loss of her mother to breast cancer at just 38 shaped Anisa's mission, leading her to found I Will Survive, Inc. The organization started by providing a listening ear. It evolved to address the broader needs of cancer survivors and their families, offering everything from food and rental assistance to transportation and crucial mental health resources. Anisa shares information on the mentoring programs and partnerships that help entire families, acknowledging the ripple effect of a cancer diagnosis on loved ones and caregivers.Through the discussion, Anisa highlights how finding purpose during life's lowest moments can spark personal transformation. She recounts guiding clients through dark times by helping them visualize a life beyond their diagnosis, and she is candid about her own journey through postpartum struggles and divorce. Anisa emphasizes the importance of accessible support, healthy lifestyle choices, and the small steps that foster long-term well-being.About the Guest:Anisa Palmer is a combat veteran, author, and social impact leader dedicated to health equity and community empowerment. Curious about the role of artificial intelligence in mental health, they sat down with Dr Prateek Varshney, a child psychiatrist and medical educator, to explore the promises and pitfalls of AI in psychiatry. From self-diagnosis online to the risks of people forming emotional attachments to chatbots, this conversation asks whether technology can support psychiatry, or if it risks undermining the very human connections at its core. EPISODE SPONSOR: Tenmile Distillery: Use code "THEINTERVIEW" for 10% off all ordersI'm briefly pausing my “Summer Travel Series” to explore a topic that's gaining national attention: ketamine and ketamine therapy. You may have heard ketamine mentioned in the news—whether in connection with the death of Friends actor Matthew Perry, or Elon Musk publicly endorsing it. But beyond the headlines, there's an emerging body of evidence showing that, when used therapeutically, ketamine can be life-changing for those struggling with PTSD, anxiety, depression, or alcohol use disorder. On a more personal note, I've had several friends undergo ketamine therapy with remarkable results. Their experiences sparked my curiosity and led me to explore this cutting-edge treatment in greater depth. That curiosity brought me to Nushama, a licensed ketamine therapy clinic in midtown Manhattan, where I sat down with two seasoned psychedelic psychotherapists: Eric Stoneberg and Anisa Stechert.Between them, they've treated thousands of patients—ranging from 9/11 first responders and veterans to teenagers battling eating disorders and adults living with anxiety. In this episode, we cover it all: what ketamine is, which conditions it treats (including some powerful patient stories), how it rewires trauma in the brain, who qualifies as a candidate, and what a typical experience looks like at a clinic like Nushama.Whether you're curious, skeptical, or somewhere in between, I invite you to listen with an open mind. This conversation sheds light on a promising new tool in the mental health toolbox—one that could transform the way we approach healing.Stream the episode now wherever you get your podcasts—and don't forget to subscribe so you never miss a conversation. Overview: We explore the challenges and deep rewards of providing care to newly arrived refugee and immigrant families, guided by the insights of Dr. Anisa Ibrahim, an experienced pediatrician and community advocate. We unpack the art of truly welcoming families, emphasizing the power of listening to migration histories, honoring cultural backgrounds, and recognizing that parents are the experts in their children's lives. We delve into sensitive topics like nutrition, developmental delays, mental health, and environmental health risks, learning practical tools for culturally attuned dialogue and persistent partnership. Through stories and reflections, we highlight why culturally responsive care matters—not just for medical outcomes but for trust, resilience, and healing across diverse communities. Three Takeaways: The Power of Migration StoriesDr. Ibrahim emphasizes the importance of understanding each family's unique migration journey—two families from the same country may have wildly different trauma histories, languages of comfort, and support needs. She makes it clear that “migration history” is critical; you can't use a cookie-cutter approach for refugee or immigrant healthcare because lived experiences differ so much. Literacy as a Clinical FoundationOne standout strategy from Dr. Ibrahim is her early, nonjudgmental questions about literacy: “Do you read or write in any language?” This simple inquiry uncovers critical information for both clinical care and partnership with community resources. It breaks down assumptions and helps tailor support, recognizing that language skills aren't uniform, even within the same language or cultural group. Redefining Expertise: Families as Experts in Their Own ChildrenDr. Ibrahim reframes the traditional doctor-patient relationship by explicitly telling parents, “You're an expert in your child.” This collaborative model flips the script from provider dominance to shared expertise, enhancing trust and participation—especially crucial for families new to Western healthcare system Next Step: Visit our website, Healthcare for Humans, and join our community to enjoy exclusive benefits at https://www.healthcareforhumans.org/support/ Support Our Mission: Non-clinicians, explore exclusive content and contribute to our collective journey. Bible Reading: Psalm 73:13-28; Proverbs 2:1-9Kahlil closed the book he was reading and sighed. "You don't look very happy," said his sister, Anisa. "What are you thinking about?"Kahlil hesitated. "God," he admitted. "I've been wondering if God really hears us when we pray.""Of course He does!" said Anisa."And my teacher at church says God is everywhere," said Kahlil. "How can that be? And how can He have no beginning?""I can't believe you're questioning God!" said Anisa. "Better not let Mom or Dad hear you do that.""Do what?" asked Dad as he walked in and sat down.Kahlil nervously picked at the corner of his book. "Well, sometimes I don't understand things about God and what the Bible says about Him. I have lots of questions, and Anisa thinks that's wrong.""No, it's not wrong," said Dad. "It's perfectly okay for you to have those kinds of questions.""It is?" asked Anisa. She and Kahlil looked at each other in surprise. Dad nodded. "You learn by asking questions. For example, you made macaroni and cheese yesterday, right? How did you learn to do that?"Anisa chimed in. "I heard him ask Mom a ton of questions. He asked how much water to use and how high to set the burner. And he asked how long it had to boil." She turned to her brother. "You've seen Mom make it a million times, but you didn't know anything when you tried to do it yourself."Kahlil made a face at his sister. "Well, I could do it now!" Dad smiled. "I'm sure you could. Asking questions helped you learn what to do. That's one reason God welcomes our honest questions--He knows they help us learn.""You mean God's not mad?" Anisa asked.Dad shook his head. "The book of Psalms is full of hard questions the writers asked God. Their questions helped them understand more about God and why they could trust Him. So don't be afraid to ask hard questions. Questions can strengthen your faith as you learn more about who God is and how Jesus came to save you and promises to be with you through life's difficulties." Standing up, Dad said, "I'm hungry. Why don't we ask God some questions together over a bowl of Kahlil's mac and cheese?" –Sheri ShawHow About You?What are some things about God you don't understand? It's okay to ask hard questions--they can help you learn and grow in your relationship with Jesus. Ask your parents, teachers at church, or any Christian adult you feel you can talk to. Look to the Bible for answers too, and ask God to help you understand more about who He is and what He's done for you.Today's Key Verse:Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and incomprehensible things you do not know.
