Après une année 2018 bourrée de feat. et de tubes, Roméo Elvis a pris conscience de ses pouvoirs et tente avec un premier album solo de réaliser le fabuleux destin qu’on lui promet depuis ses débuts. « Chocolat » est un album copieux et dense, partagé entre des titres calibrés pour la radio et des appels aux pogos de concert, à l’écriture pourtant décevante et assez peu second degré. Sans manquer d’émotion, l’ensemble souffre d’un manque de poésie, de style et de fraîcheur. Roméo Elvis parvient pourtant à se poser à la fois en observateur du rap actuel et comme l’un de ses acteurs principaux, et brise la frontière entre artiste et public. Rentrons avec “Ye” dans le Kanye Universe prévu pour durer tout l’été, avec cinq albums de sept titres chacun au programme. Deux ans après “The Life of Pablo”, ce petit opéra tragi-comique met en scène le roi Kanye, ses textes de plus en plus grotesques et plats, à l’interprétation de plus en plus burlesque. L’album fait certes passer des idées, des influences et innovations, mais l’on traverse la discographie de Kanye à l’intérieur même des morceaux, ce qui donne l’impression d’un grand brouillon. Incapable de se focaliser sur un registre ou une époque, Kanye semble naïf, maladroit, quoiqu’un peu touchant. Le temps qui passe risque de faire du mal à “Ye”, album potentiellement mineur dans la discographie incroyable de Kanye West, qui parvient pourtant à dessiner un portrait de ce que l’artiste est aujourd’hui. Alors on reste dans l’attente des prochains sept titres pour étoffer le croquis du rappeur, puisque l’intérêt n’est pas vraiment l’album, mais tout ce qui se passe autour. “Syre” : à seulement 19 ans, le fils de Will Smith sort son premier album et confirme son ambition de devenir rappeur. Mais alors qu’il possède toutes les cartes pour y parvenir - charisme, aura, le nom de son père et de l’argent - il lui manque la plus importante : avoir quelque chose à raconter lorsqu’il parle de lui. Syre est un album nombriliste et une tentative ratée de faire de l’introspection, une suite d’ambitions ratées étouffées par un mélange incompréhensible de références à ses idoles qui frôle la parodie. Jaden veut trop en faire, gâche ses prods et n’arrive pas au bout de ses textes. Jaden veut choquer alors que la provocation est une norme. Jaden veut qu’on le prenne pour un philosophe, une icône, un incompris. L’album qui en résulte est une version sans âme de Kid Cudi, bordélique, sans grande qualité malgré quelques bonnes idées, pratiquement une purge à écouter dans son intégralité.
