What if you could travel the world, play music in every corner, and still find your own unique sound? This episode is your backstage pass into the life of Mighty Mike Schermer, a musician who has done just that. From the influence of legends like Albert Collins and Willie Nelson to the ever-changing landscape of music with the rise of AI, Mike's journey is a testament to the power of playing from the heart. As he shares his experiences of performing across 50 states and 25 countries, we uncover how genuine expression can unite diverse genres and touch souls worldwide. Mike's creative process offers a fascinating glimpse into the making of his new album, a project infused with memories of Austin's vibrant music scene and the serene landscapes of northern Nevada. With tracks like "Exit Through the Gun Shop," Mike blends serious themes with playful elements, crafting a vintage country sound that echoes the raw spirit of honky-tonk. Adopting the persona of Michael Ray Pickens, he channels the energy of punk rock into the world of country, providing a fresh perspective on a timeless genre. This episode captures Mike's journey from an impromptu session with pianist Chris Landrum to a full-fledged album, proving that inspiration can strike in the most unexpected places. Beyond music, Mike's stories from the road reveal the unpredictable adventures of a touring musician. Whether it's sharing unforgettable highs like touring with Howard Tate or navigating the challenges of social media in today's digital age, Mike's insights are as entertaining as they are enlightening. As he reflects on the changing motivations of a musician's life, listeners are reminded of the importance of community, self-care, and spreading love through music. Exit Through the Giftshop is a documentary on the commodification of street art directed by Banksy but placing Thierry Guetta, a Bansky acolyte who was inspired to enter the art world by Banksy, as the central figure through which to explore its themes. The podcast discusses Guetta's journey, and questions Banksy's perspective and attitude towards Guetta, whilst questioning whether the figure of Guetta is real or not. Is he just a Banksy invention, a construct through which to raise questions? Does it matter? Aren't all films constructs? The film is discussed as a documentary and compared to a range of works from Welles F for Fake to reality television. A film enriched by being open to the many interpretations the discussion in the podcast brings up.

Banksy is the world's most famous living artist, yet no one knows who he is. For more than twenty years, his wryly political and darkly humorous spray paintings have appeared mysteriously on urban walls around the globe, generating headlines and controversy. Art critics disdain him, but the public (and the art market) love him. With Banksy: Completed (MIT Press, 2021), artist and critic Carol Diehl is the first author to probe the depths of the Banksy mystery. Through her exploration of his paintings, installations, writings, and Academy Award-nominated film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Diehl proves unequivocally that there's more to Banksy than the painting on the wall. Seeing Banksy as the ultimate provocateur, Diehl investigates the dramas that unfold after his works are discovered, with all of their social, economic, and political implications. She reveals how this trickster rattles the system, whether during his month-long 2013 self-styled New York “residency” or his notorious Dismaland of 2015, a full-scale dystopian “family theme park unsuitable for children” dedicated to the failure of capitalism. Banksy's work, Diehl shows, is a synthesis of conceptual art, social commentary, and political protest, played out not in museums but where it can have the most effect—on the street, in the real world. The questions Banksy raises about the uses of public and private property, the role of the global corporatocracy, the never-ending wars, and the gap between artworks as luxury goods and as vehicles of social expression, have never been more relevant. Galina Limorenko is a doctoral candidate in Neuroscience with a focus on biochemistry and molecular biology of neurodegenerative diseases at EPFL in Switzerland. Plus, the San Diego Unified School District announced on Tuesday a new principal for Lincoln High. Melissa Agudelo will serve as co-principal with the current principal, Stephanie Brown. And while parents await further guidance on vaccinating children under 12, many are wondering what social precautions must be taken as California prepares to reopen on June 15. Then, the loss of taste and smell is now widely known as a telltale sign of COVID-19. But fewer people are aware of another potential lingering side effect: when scents and flavors become distorted. Also, more than 12,000 American Legion posts closed for at least part of the pandemic. Those closures left some posts in financial trouble. Finally, in a new episode of the KPBS Explore podcast, "The Parker Edison Project," we talk with a photographer who's worked on everything from album covers to popular movies like "Friday" and "Exit Through the Gift Shop."

Leake Street Graffiti Tunnel, found underneath the platforms and tracks of Waterloo Station, is London's largest legal graffiti wall at 300-metres in length. The site gained fame after famed British street artist, Banksy, held a street art festival called Cans Festival (a play on The Cannes Film Festival) in the tunnel. Banksy had recognised the potential of the tunnel which had formerly been used as an access road for taxis to pick up passengers from the Eurostar. From the 3rd-5th May 2008, forty street artists from around the world - including Blek le Rat, Ben Eine, Sten & Lex and Vexta - transformed the grimy tunnel into a street art haven. Graffiti and street art are legally permitted in the tunnel meaning that artists can create works without fear of getting arrested by police. This ever-changing gallery now attracts street art tourists and graffiti enthusiasts from around the world and   arches adjacent to the tunnel were recently transformed into bars and restaurants. The site was even home to a temporary cinema, The Lambeth Palace, to celebrate the release of Banksy's documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop in 2010.

Banksy is the pseudonym of an England-based artist (or group of artists, as some conspiracy theorists claim) whose real identity remains a secret since they became active in the 1990s. Although their journey began as a graffiti artist, Banksy has transcended to several other mediums and disciplines, going as far as being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2011 for Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010), as well arranging the installation of Disneyland's dark amusement park twin, Dismaland, in 2015. This week we explore the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop. A documentary that on the surface is about the underground graffiti scene of both Europe and the United States in the early 90s to 2000s. But at its deepest level it is an allegory about art and what it means to be an artist. Including figures such as Banksy, Shepard Fairey, and Mr. Brainwash this documentary explores a world of artistry and Passion. We thoroughly enjoyed this documentary and definitely recommend it for anyone out there who is making anything. 嘉宾:HE,Bee(Insta:streetart_he, streetart_bee)主播:nada 剪辑:nada这期聊的是涂鸦的进行时。 Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010)。

Pastor Kristopher begins the new year with a sermon series from the book of Lamentations on the human experience of grief and loss. This sermon explores some of the basics of loss and invites listeners to consider giving voice and "naming" their suffering. As is the case most weeks, Kristopher Loewen preaches this sermon from the pulpit at the Redlands Adventist Church in Redlands, California. Exit Through the Gift Shop. While also the name of a 2010 documentary by artist Banksy, this concept has become kind of a joke among critics and fans alike in the location-based entertainment industry. Even Disney attractions themselves have referenced this concept, with a joke on the World Famous Jungle Cruise stating that floating through a temple could lead to danger or adventure, but probably leads to a gift shop. You might think from all this talk that this is just the way of things in the industry, that every attraction ends with the ability to buy all the merchandise in the world, but in reality, this is an exception to the rule. Even at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, only 6 of the 37 listed attractions actually exit through a gift shop, and one of those, Fantasy Faire, is really more of a side opportunity than a forced walkthrough. While it has become a joke, the concept of finishing an experience with a shop is actually a brilliant design move and, I would argue, contributes to the overall Guest experience. Attractions are designed to excite or inspire their Guests. The very best attractions inherently create a call to action to their Guests to remember or relive their experience. What better way to reinforce this call than through specific merchandise or keepsakes that reinforce those memories, giving the Guests something tangible with which to relive their adventure. And it’s not just theme and amusement parks. Museums, Zoos, Aquariums, and Historical Sites all rely on the income and inherent guerrilla marketing that comes with the sale of souvenirs. Traveling exhibits, such as the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibit most recently at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science features its own merchandise location for the exhibit itself, in addition to the museum shop. This popup shop features recreations of many of Leonardo’s stunning inventions along with the tools and resources that would allow visitors, especially children, to continue exploring their own inherent ingenuity in the same way Leonardo did. Sure, the exhibition relies on the income generated by this location, but it also provides a channel for Guests to take their enthusiasm and that deeper “call to action” beyond the walls of the museum to their own lives. The experience fosters a curiosity, and the merchandise helps it grow, it’s all part of the Total Guest Experience. So while in this day and age, when gift shops and merchandise opportunities may be seen as “shameless” cash grabs or just another way to empty Guest wallets, I would posit that Guests would be keenly aware of a lack of this design and business choice. Far be it from a capitalistic cliche, exiting through the gift shop is really addressing Guest and business needs in a most simplistic and effective way. Now of course, if done in an obnoxious and detrimental way, it could certainly negatively impact the perception of an experience, but that holds true for any segment of the designed environment. A poorly designed queue, lack of shade in a tropical environment, lack of benches, inefficient HVAC, all can contribute negatively to the overall attraction experience, but at the end of the day, I dare say in most circumstances, the Total Guest Experience is enhanced by encouraging visitors to “exit through the gift shop”. How do you feel about this concept? Do you agree with my assessment or do you think I’m completely off base? Either way, let us know at connect@mainentrancecast.com.

Mark Bowden’s TEDxToronto in 2013 had a huge impact on how I think about authenticity. As I was laboring over my book, Your Stories Don’t Define You, I realized the influence that talk has had on me over the past 5 years in my work with coaching clients. When I encourage people to step out of their comfort zones to discover their hidden talents and joy, I often refer to Mark’s work. As always, I asked my guest to share something about himself that most people don’t know, something we wouldn’t find in his bio or his LinkedIn profile, something he hasn’t written in one of his many books and articles, something that would connect our audience to him in a personal and intriguing way. He did not disappoint! Mark has been a traditional Morris Dancer for many years. I had to do a little digging into this because I was completely unfamiliar, and I’m so glad I did! Here’s an example from YouTube: Our conversation centered on why Mark believes authenticity isn’t something everyone should strive for, necessarily. What I loved about this discussion was what seemed like a direct conflict with so much of what is being written and talked about in relation to that word: Authenticity. But as we explored Mark’s work, I realized it isn’t necessarily in conflict. For instance, though Kimberly Davis’ book, Brave Leadership, centers around the word authenticity, she states: “Your brave unfolds one situation at a time.” Mark and I spoke a little about that, but using the word authenticity instead of brave. The danger in focusing on a solid, foundational definition of personal authenticity is the limits that places on you in terms of growth and adaptability. If you decide one version of you is your authentic self, where does that leave you in terms of curiosity and stepping out of your comfort zone? Mark got particularly animated when he spoke about his mentor, Robert Anton Wilson, philosopher, author, and playwright. He mentioned Orson Well’s movie, F is for Fake, and the Banksy film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, in the context of making judgments about what is fake vs. what is real, and the philosophy that when we see things as black and white we will experience the death of intelligence.  Early in Mark’s professional career, he worked with Phillippe Gaulier, a brilliant and controversial figure in British theatre. Many quotes from our conversation are memorable, and I particularly appreciated our discussion of the depth of beauty and humanity in Jim Henson’s The Muppet Show. Here’s one I’ll hold onto forever: Another one that struck me was this: “Coincidence, traced back far enough, becomes inevitability.” Found in a Hindu Temple near New Delhi, India. November 5, 2018. This week Nick is joined via call by his friend and art-lover Georgia Hausmann, all the way from Cornell University in Ithica, NY. They both watched the 2010 Oscar-nominated street art documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop, directed by the man who brought this form of art into the spotlight: Banksy. The documentary focuses on the development of Banksy's friend/coworker, Thierry Guetta (aka Mr. Brainwash), and has transformation from filmmaker to street artist. In this episode, they discuss several of Banksy's famous stunts, how Banksy's art was meant to be temporary yet it is sold in galleries now, if Thierry Guetta is a genius or an idiot, whether he is scamming people or if he believes his work is good, whether everyone should be encouraged to pursue art, why certain artists make it and others are left forgotten, if street art has reinvented how we think about art or if this is how it's always been, the idea of branding and its relationship to art, originality with art and what makes it actually good, if Mr. Brainwash's work is all a hoax, and much more! For any of those on the fence about this episode or documentary, please go watch and witness one of the most fascinating stories about art, talent, fame, and how a man without any of that made it. On this episode of the Sofa King Podcast, we hit the streets like vandals and explore the stencils, tags, and art installations of the mysterious Banksy. Though his real identity is unknown, this artist from the UK has reached a level of social prominence very few artists ever do in their lifetimes. Aside from selling typical art pieces for hundreds of thousands of dollars, the actual sides of buildings he spray paints are worth a fortune and sold in a strange market of wall art. Most people think Banksy was born in Bristol sometime in the early 1970s. What is known for sure comes from interviews from a guy who they think was most likely Banksy at the time (he was with Banksy’s art dealer and agent, so that’s a plus). He started to tag at the age of 14 while he ran with the DryBreadZ Crew. This gang was known for its street art, and Banksy was a confirmed member, as was 3D who went on to be a founding member of Massive Attack. After some time on the street, Banksy was hiding under a trash truck and saw a stenciled vehicle number underneath it. From there, his art style was born, and instead of freehand spray paint, his work started to include complex stencils. Banksy’s artwork is mostly political in nature, lampooning government, violence, police states, war, corporations, and greed. One he built a name for himself he did installations at the West Bank, in Bethlehem, and in New Orleans after the Katrina disaster. His antics and art are often hilarious, and we get quite a few laughs at his stunts and work over the years. The coolest part about him is that even after all these years, an Oscar nomination for his work Exit Through the Gift Shop, art awards, and global fame, nobody still knows who he is. Some people think he’s an artist named Robin Gunningham and others think he’s actually 3D from Massive Attack, which would be dope as hell. If you want to buck the system, Banksy is your man, and this is your podcast.   Guardian Interview: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2003/jul/17/art.artsfeatures Tom Waits: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/tom-waits-lends-instrumental-song-to-banksys-west-bank-hotel-w510659

Class is back and this time we are discussing the 2013 found footage film Mr. Jones and what it has to tell us about Guerrilla, Street, and Outsider Art.  We talk a whole bunch about how much we liked this movie, even though the overall reception can be described as "mixed" at best.  Plus we sing!  And play the drums! Show notes and useful links: 1:00-  Tyler talks a bit about the "Arrive Alive" presentation at his school.  For more about Arrive Alive, check out their website.  1:30-  Many airports need volunteers to be injured victims during their annual emergency exercises.  Often times they will make you up in some pretty horrific makeup!  Check out Kansas City International's call for volunteers here or Google your local airport if you are interested. 3:50- Tyler is currently reading Year's Best Body Horror 2017 edited by C.P. Dunphey.  If you are interested in the body horror sub-genre, we totally recommend it.  Click here for our Amazon affiliate link and pick up a copy today. 4:20-  Tyler watched Mom and Dad recently, you can check out his review and learn more about Nick Cage going full Cage here. 6:45-  Tyler and Mike both loved the new novella by Philip Fracassi entitled "Shiloh" and the additional bonus story "Soda Jerk."  Click here to see their full review of Shiloh. 9:50-  For more podcasts covering your favorite fiction genres, check out the Shockwaves podcast by Blumhouse. 10:30-  Mike recommends some free horror fiction over at Pseudopod with their really cool original "Alarm Will Sound." 12:00-  Class starts!  Spoilers ahead for Mr. Jones (2013).  Also, we really apologize for our terrible singing.  17:30-  Trailer for Mr. Jones, you can watch the full version over at YouTube. 20:00-  Tyler tells us all about Apotropaic Magic, which is pretty darn interesting.  Learn more over at Wikipedia.   23:45-  No discussion of street and guerrilla art would be complete without a discussion of Banksy.  Check out the trailer for Exit Through the Gift Shop, a documentary about Banksy and try to get a hold of the movie.  It is really well done.   25:00-  Mike discusses an interview that was published on Daily Dead where Mr. Jones writer and director Karl Mueller indicated that one of his inspirations was Henry Darger. 30:15-  Likely the coolest and most mysterious guerrilla/outsider art out there are the Toynbee Tiles.  You can watch an entire documentary about them here for free. 36:00-  Check out more artwork from Pumpkinrot on their website.  Not only is Pumpkinrot responsible for the super cool scarecrows in Mr. Jones, but also some of the work in Krampus. 37:30-  Awesome Huck Magazine article about Apotropaic magic in Bulgaria and the super cool costumes that people wear to ward off evil spirits. 48:00-  For similar works, check out the Laird Barron short story "Strappado."  We recommend just going whole hog down the Laird Barron rabbit hole by purchasing his book Occultation.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 242 Coming to you "live" from Movie Meltdown's presentation of "The Movie Geek Art Show!", we bring you snippets of opening night action as well as a full group discussion of not only this week's Sofa Theater feature "Beautiful Losers", but also conversations about drawing, painting, filmmaking and art in general. Plus we crossover into the musical arts as we sit down with members of the band "The Moonlight Peddlers" who are entertaining the crowd at the art show.  And as we travel sideways in time, we also mention... Hilltop Tavern, Henry Darger, James Gunn, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Andrei Rublev, Mark Anthony Mulligan, Powder, watercolor dickgirls, hopes were dashed, missing Yak,  perverting the task that you are given, painting horses, raising the dead, hanging around the Yeti camp, Grandmother taste, back-up beard, inventing a new genre of short film, the best selling book in Great Britian, Awww, it's a cute kitty... and it's horribly burned, John Cale, Harmony Korine, working for a major corporation, Camille Claudel, my mother was so rad... she would save every drawing I did, blood-splattered kitties, Rembrandt, Lanford Wilson, how much of it is just a process?, a red hair-ing, the repainted fresco, buying oriental rugs, If artists were a Mafia... that's what we'd be doing, Who's gonna take a Yak?, PG Porn, selling out, Stephen King... drugs... and the Bible, filmmaking post digital age, taking a baby's face, Shakespeare's first folio, Cinema Paradiso and Gremlins 2: The New Batch, encouraging art for adults, if I stay awake during a movie... it's a good movie, ernest Yeti stories, heir to a condiment fortune and an kitten named Basil going to a cathouse. "The way movies represent artists... is that they're all just geniuses - and stuff just comes pouring out of them."

Movie Meltdown - Episode 112 This new session of The Caffeinated Movie Geek also features a return to our documentary series...The Really Real World. This week we discuss in-depth the Oscar-nominated film, Exit Through The Gift Shop. And along the way, we question the very nature of art, film, hype, money and reality itself. Pretty deep thoughts for a few geeks drinking coffee. Plus while trying to figure out who Banksy is we discuss…size and placement, the sane way to celebrate the new year, empirical, going dumb and ugly, The Wal-Mart Movie Project, Orson Welles is so f-ing cool, Scott Pilgrim, The Blair Witch Project, Madonna, go big or go home, why do you turn into Bob Saget?, the cable series, props to Rob Reiner, Michael C. Hall, recasting John Malkovich, logical Latin, you sift the detritus, F for Fake, is it Michael Cera Syndrome or Andy Dick Syndrome?, a male Tina Fey, being permentantly attached to Tura Satana, dysfunctional Mom and Pop stores, most people are dumb, three thumbs up, not getting jazz, Claw on Inspector Gadget, Six Feet Under, The Doogie and Willow Show, Playboy’s Women of Wal-Mart, Lady GaGa, meeting a gigalo, The Trial, that dated 70’s Show, the lowest form of drama, Tim Burton is Aerosmith, placing value on art and Transformers don't procreate! Spoiler Alert: OBEY…Just go watch Exit Through the Gift Shop. “Is it an Andy Kaufman trick that he just played on everyone?”
