Coming of age stories are universal, but its always fun to see how the same director can re-imaging the idea, as Rick Famuyiwa does first with The Wood (1999) and then again in Dope (2015). Both stories are set in Southern California and highlight the challenges of growing up and achieving more than expectations. Inglewood, California. Home of the 2028 Summer Olympics, birthplace of WNBA legend Lisa Leslie, setting of the Rick Famuyiwa film Dope, and in the summer of 1995 a young Aaquil Iben Shamon Brown welcomed his younger brother Khalif into the world. The duo would later be known by the noms de guerre Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee, or more widely known as Rae Sremmurd. Two decades would pass before the brotherly pair would take the world by storm with their debut triple platinum single "No Flex Zone" and another decade still before the iconic trap track would be immortalized in a commercial so audacious, so entrancing that it captured the hearts and minds of broadcast television viewers the world over.We focus on a father sitting around the family dinner table with his wife and two daughters engaged in a battle of wills, competing to emerge victorious in a match of Hasbro's ever popular board game, Jenga. He locks in, laser focused, the dulcet tones of Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee surround us, only to be distracted by his younger daughter with the allure of an irresistible chicken sandwich. The tower collapses, game over.Hard cut. We pan out to reveal the entire family basking in the afterglow of a hard fought battle, with a celebratory feast of east Texas' own: Wingstop. Dad has the sandwich in hand. Baskets upon baskets of their sumptuous chicken tenders, each daughter with one of their own. Ramekins of the classic house made ranch dressing placed generously around the table. The smell of freshly cut french fries fills the air. This meal has it all. Rae Sremmurd fades out, sending the viewer to a palace of nostalgic bliss. This is the vision of an idyllic world. Family, brotherhood, competition, togetherness, the American Dream, desire, Black Beatles, and fried chicken. There are SO many different ideas out there about what it takes to make it in Hollywood. But our guest today, Rick Famuyiwa, is living proof that carving out your own lane is the move. You probably know him from his recent work, like the hit show “The Mandalorian,” or his 2015 indie smash “Dope” with Zoë Kravitz and A$AP Rocky. But today, we're throwin' it all the way back to where it started. Rick's breaking down exactly how he paved his own way in the industry, the magic of telling stories that hit close to home, and y'all…he's spilling some tea on how, at just 24 years old, three guys who would go on to become pretty big stars—Terrence Howard, Jamie Foxx, and Usher (ever heard of them?)—auditioned for his first movie, “The Wood.”Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! It's been a minute, but Distorted Minds is finally back with an all-new movie talk episode! Drew's pick this week is the 2015 crime/comedy movie Dope, from director Rick Famuyiwa. It's about a group of high school kids who accidentally end up with a big bag of drugs and are forced to sell them. Kevin's choice this time is Alexander Payne's 2004 dramedy film, Sideways. It stars Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church as a couple of friends who go out to wine country before one of them gets married. Episode 186!? This week we're switching things up and giving your thoughts on The Flash! The Flash is a 2023 American superhero film based on the DC character of the same name. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, Double Dream, and the Disco Factory, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is the 13th installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson and stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / The Flash alongside Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue, and Michael Keaton. In the film, Barry travels back in time to prevent his mother's death, which brings unintended consequences. The development of a film based on The Flash began in the late 1980s, with multiple writers and directors attached to the project through 2014. The film was then redeveloped as a part of the DCEU, with Miller cast as the title character. Multiple directors were attached to the film over the following years, with Seth Grahame-Smith, Rick Famuyiwa, and the duo of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein all departing the project over creative differences. Muschietti and Hodson joined the film in July 2019, and pre-production began in January 2020. The film is influenced by the comic book storyline Flashpoint, featuring multiple DC characters, including Ben Affleck and Keaton reprising their respective versions of Batman. Principal photography took place from April to October 2021 at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden and on location around the United Kingdom. The Flash premiered at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on June 12, 2023, and was released in the United States on June 16, following multiple delays caused by director changes, the COVID-19 pandemic, post-production setbacks and controversies surrounding Miller. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its plot, action sequences, humor, and performances (particularly of Miller and Keaton), but criticism for the quality of its visual effects and screenplay. We break down everything in this spoiler special; from the false expectations that might have impacted your ability to enjoy there episode (i.e., all the rumors that there had to be another spy revealed and that there would be a monumental character death, etc.). Plus, high praise for director and executive producer Rick Famuyiwa and how he directed the final two chapters of the season. And making sense of Grogu's new name, and how that moment with Dark Saber might actually help the future of the Mandalorian people. Well! The dream scenario happened and we were lucky enough to attend three roundtable interviews for The Mandalorian Season 3: First, we talk with executive producers Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau; then we talk with executive producer and director Rick Famuyiwa; and finally we talk with Katee Sackhoff (Bo-Katan Kryze). We ask Dave and Jon about generational relationships, Rick about the story themes he enjoys the most in Star Wars, and then we wrap up asking Katee about Bo's relationship with Din and her character arc. Valentine's Day is almost upon us and what better time to revisit a romantic comedy from just over twenty years ago? This one stars Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs as two childhood friends who initially bonded through their love of hip-hop music and have remained best friends through adulthood while also both working in the world of hip-hop. But now as they both live in New York City, their lives are getting a bit more complicated as one of them is about to be married....and wouldn't you know it, they MIGHT want to be more than friends. This rom-com - which blends of elements of When Harry Met Sally and Jerry Maguire - was directed by Rick Famuyiwa and also stars Mos Def and Queen Latifah.Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
