Dropping his first single in 1988, Don Cisco might be the Bay Area's first Latino rapper on record. Growing up in the diverse Excelsior District, he gravitated towards hip-hop early during the emergence of West Coast rap, signing major label deals and a management contract with Ruthless Records' Jerry Heller. When that didn't work out, he started dropping independent projects in the Bay Area and started working with the likes Mac Dre, Baby Bash, Jay Tee, Kid Frost, Roger Troutman, and many more. His song "Mamacita" appeared on the Next Friday soundtrack and his single "Oh Boy" with Kurupt and Roscoe was a regional hit. Since then he's dealt with life's ups and downs but continues to push forward and make new music.--For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com--History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aaOnline Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlAInstagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_oneTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_oneTwitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_oneFacebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone41500:00 Intro01:51 Excelsior District05:13 Getting into music08:36 First single in 198814:43 Jerry Heller, Suge Knight21:34 Early 90s Latino rap28:49 Nick Peace, Tone Capone33:29 Thizz36:37 JT and Baby Bash: Latino Velvet40:53 Next Friday soundtrack45:48 “Oh Boy” with Kurupt52:45 Fighting the feds59:15 Losing friends1:02:34 Roger Troutman1:06:48 Mac Dre in Excelsior1:09:28 Upcoming projects

Episode 115. Join host Troy Saunders as he chats with writer, producer, multi instrumentalist, pianist, Jesse Thompson!Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, known in music circles as the land of funk, Jesse Thompson couldn't help but be influenced by the city's great R&B pioneers – including Slave, Ohio Players, Lakeside and Zapp featuring Roger Troutman. For the past 20 years, the multi-talented composer, pianist and keyboardist manifested these inspirations – and helped bring the legacies of these legendary bands forward – as a former member of the popular and prolific, constantly gigging Columbus-based R&B/jazz ensemble NexLevel.Unlike many longtime band members and sidemen who work towards someday expressing themselves as solo artists, Thompson was content with his existing whirlwind of activity playing with others. But when the pandemic hit, he instinctively used his down time to, as he says, “sow a seed of happiness” to create “Weekend Groove” – an irrepressible Next-Gen disco vibin' house beat driven track featuring flutist Althea Rene and a horn section by Kelly O'Donohue that ultimately became the lead single to his uniquely titled debut album The Inauguration of Jtjazz (Jesse Thompson the Man Behind the Keys). Though its dance floor ready lead single “Weekend Groove” will immediately spark excitement and lift the spirits just as Jesse Thompson intended, there are a multitude of other pleasures to experience on The Inauguration of Jtjazz (Jesse Thompson the Man Behind the Keys) – an album which truly rolls like an autobiographical blend of his many influences, from those Dayton funk legends to George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Joe Sample and Brian Culbertson. The album's latest single “It Doesn't Matter” is a sensual, easy grooving romantic joint featuring Thompson interacting with #1 Billboard charting trumpeter Lin Rountree – who he connected with via mutual connections at the individual HBCU schools they attended. As a showcase for Thompson's great talents on Fender Rhodes (creating a moody effect and his sparkling acoustic piano, the song taps into Thompson's love of Joe Sample's vibe both with the Crusaders and as a solo artist. The elegant funk ballad “The Right One Baby” offers a similar seductive duality. Troy highlighted three song from this incredible project "Weekend Grove", Obsidian, and "It Doesn't Matter".Being the son of a father who was a professional jazz drummer and a mother who was a church organist/pianist, Jesse Thompson – aka “JTJazz” came by his musical gifts naturally and started playing the drums as his first instrument at the age of five. By the time JT was twelve years old, he played a total of thirteen instruments, the piano being one of them. In addition to his parents, he was influenced by his oldest brother Marvyn Wheatley, who recorded and played with Parliament and Slave. Thompson spent time with his brothers in the studio hanging out with Slave, Roger Troutman & Zapp, Steve Arrington and othersThese experiences truly fueled his musical passions and ambitions. While he studied manufacturing engineering and IT at Central State University (in Wilberforce, OH), he played in the school's marching band and jazz ensemble and joined the national honorary band of the Kappa Kappa Psi fraternity. His other influences include Alex Bugnon, Jimmy Smith, Billy Preston, Jeff Lorber, James Lloyd and Bob James.Troy and Jesse discusses Jesse's musical bucket list, future endeavors giving back and more.‍Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. All In Entertainment Group ,Well Known , Song SpeakReady for an AWESOME NEW Timeless Eclectic Music DuoThey were on separate paths and things just weren't coming together. The music wasn't hittin' like they both believed it could. B3E (aka Evan Bendel) was about to walk out the door on music and leave it behind, getting on a new path and preparing for a new career in law enforcement. But the opportunity to continue to do what he loves and clearly was born to do happened when they teamed up. While Evan has always been called “Bee” because of his last name, he flipped this 3rd time's a charm destiny moment, put it in his name and invested his supreme vocals into this new iteration of his skills. The story for JOANZ (aka Kenzell Jones), who was just stepping into the game–finding his voice and trying to find his focus and his fire–is that he's a wordsmith who grabbed his moniker from the motion picture “Love Jones” as a play on his musicality. That also includes his ability to play several instruments (bass, guitar, drums and saxophone). JOANZ had lyrics and needed something else, a voice that could punch up and push back on his verses with lyrics that helped the music catch fire. As fate would have it, a mutual friend introduced the duo, thinking it was for one song, one time only. But their convergence brought magic, just the magic that they both needed to forge ahead, so 2 solo artists put ego and pride aside and let the music ride. “We got into the studio and it was on and poppin' since then.” The song that brought the duo together hasn't even been released, but it did its job in bringing together these 2 talents to make music and set their sights on stardomInspired by everyone from Al Green, Michael Jackson, Commodores, Bee Gees, Earth, Wind & Fire and Sam Cooke to Roger Troutman, OutKast, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Lil Wayne, with both artists heavily influenced by Michael Jackson, these young music makers know what a great duo can do when they put their minds and their melodies to work! With a sound and solid respect for music that covers genres and generations, B3E sings for his soul while Joanz spits lyrics that include a Luther Vandross reference on “IN MY EAR,” while “NO BREAKS” pays homage to Bobby Brown's “Every Little Step,” but with a spin on it that talks about needing to take a step back and away.JOANZ + B3E is a new era in music! The familiar meets the ferocious! The melodic “SONG SPEAK” is sinewy and sensual, but from a man's perspective, it is unexpectedly vulnerable while playfully paying tribute to Aaliyah's “Rock The Boat,” showcasing the vocal skills of B3E and the floetry of JOANZ. The opposite is true of “WELL KNOWN,” with the hook “I ain't really with the handouts and I don't wanna fit in I'd rather stand out!” It's a declaration that tells you that they didn't come into the game to just have material success. They use vocals and verses to talk about hard work, commitment to their art and their audacity in believing that it's their time! “N***s ain't been where I be, seen what I seen. (Now they) all on me (like they) all know me.” Audacity goes to another level with “NOTICE ME,” their newest joint, telling the story of working hard as a young father (B3E) and a young cat with something to prove to the streets and to him. “It's just me, I ain't have a Plan B!” © 2024 All Rights Reserved© 2024  Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

Jesse "JTJazz" Thompson, multi-talented composer, pianist, and keyboardist, born in "The Land Of Funk" (Dayton, Ohio) attributes his humble beginnings in music to being captivated by a family of musicians: a father who was a professional drummer, Thompson's mother--a church organist/pianist and his brother Marvyn Wheatley (who recorded and played with Parliament and Slave). Industry influences were soul/funk legends The Ohio Players, Lakeside, and Zapp featuring Roger Troutman. Driven to continue the legacy of great musicianship, Thompson became a member of the popular Columbus-based, R&B/Jazz group NexLevel for several years. The collectives released two albums, a string of singles, and shared stages with countless notable artists. In 2021 Thompson wrote and released the uptempo, feel-good melody, "Weekend Groove," ft Althea Rene which catapulted the musician into solo artist, status.Thompson would go on to release a 7-song EP, in 2022, intriguingly titled The Inauguration of JTJazz (Jesse Thompson- the man behind the keys) marking the commencement of a new pathway, and birthing several singles from the project. Judah Sealy, a rising creative within the contemporary jazz genre, is known for his unique sound that comes from a blend of R&B, jazz, gospel, neo-soul, and funk...the common thread between himself and Jesse "JTJAZZ" Thompson. With 2024 being a 'leap year which some say is the year of inspiration, Thompson has resolutely followed his passion by keeping his legacy in music alive by teaming with heavyweight Producer/Guitarist Adam Hawley and collaborating with highly sought after Saxophonist Judah Sealy to create an alluring mid- tempo track entitled, "Late Nite," which drops worldwide 4/1/2024.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/ladydiva-live-radio--2579466/support.

My guest today is Bosco Kante who's a Grammy award-winning artist, producer, creator of the world's first Tubeless talk box, and co-founder of ElectroSpit. Bosco has performed on albums by Kanye West and Dua Lipa and wrote the theme to the show "In Living Color." You've heard the sound of a talkbox before on hits by Joe Walsh, Peter Frampton, Zapp and Roger Troutman, and many more. The traditional talkbox is a horn driver attached to an amplifier on one end, with a plastic tube that goes into the players mouth on the other. They're bulky and unsanitary. The idea for the tubeless talkbox came when Bosco was forced lip sync on stage with Kanye West at the American Music Awards because the traditional talkbox was not portable. This disappointment set Bosko on a mission to reinvent the talkbox and a few years later the Electrospit ESX-1 was born. During the interview we spoke about the unusual  way he got into the music business, how adding a talkbox to a track makes it more interesting, the long road to the tubeless talkbox, why its phone app is so important, his HiiWave incubator, and much more. I spoke with Bosco from his office in the Bay area. On the intro I'll take a look at the artists who make millions from Spotify, and Apples latest M3 processor isn't as powerful as its older M1.

Welcome to episode 81 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I'll be talking about Hiro Tsunoda's 1991 album, “Ballad X'mas.” This was a fun episode to work on. I love Tsunoda's voice, and the non-Christmas songs on his album gave me something a little different to talk about. It also let me discover Zapp's version of “Ooo Baby Baby.” As a native Daytonian, I was surprised to learn a few months ago that Zapp was pretty big in Japan. I was lucky enough to cross paths with Roger Troutman once back in my teens. We were driving past when he was walking out of Troutman Studios. I hollered, “Roger, I want to be your man!” (The song was huge at the time.) He laughed and waved. The fact that he reacted at all was a big thrill for me. As I mentioned in the episode, I would have loved some Christmas music from a 1970s-era Hiro Tsunoda. “Ballad X'mas” is great, but I think an album from 15-20 years earlier would have turned into a Christmas funk classic. Also, as promised, here are a few videos, including Zapp's “Ooo Baby Baby” and Randy Crawford's “Almaz.” Hiro Tsunoda and the Space Band – Mary Jane (1972) Hiro Tsunoda – I Love You (B-side to “Mary Jane”) Hiro Tsunoda and the Space Band from the 1974 One Step Festival Randy Crawford – Almaz Zapp – Ooo Baby Baby (1989) I hope you enjoyed learning about and listening to Hiro Tsunoda. He has a lot of other great music, so you might find yourself going down a rabbit hole on YouTube after checking out the videos. Thanks again to Rocket Brown for introducing me to him. If you get a chance, check out Come Along Radio, where Rocket plays and talks about some of the best music City Pop has to offer. Despite my best efforts, I wasn't quite back on track with my release dates. This was supposed to be my May 11th episode, but instead was pushed back to the 25th. I'm shooting for a Memorial Day release for my next episode, where I talk about Keiichiro Ebihara and the Lobsters' “Blue Christmas – Trumpet Mood Collection” from 1959. It's a fantastic album and a smooth way to start your summer. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

Enjoy An Album with Liam Withnail & Christopher Macarthur-Boyd

Less than a year before he was supposedly drive-by'd to death in Las Vegas, 2Pac released the double album All Eyez On Me on Death Row Records. Fresh out of jail for sexual assault and sodomy, Tupac Shakur wrote and recorded this two-disc west coast classic in less than a fortnight. Collaborating with Death Row luminaries such as Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre, as well as funk legends like Roger Troutman and George Clinton, 2Pac packed “All Eyez On Me” with hits like California Love and How Do You Want It before ultimately faking his own death and living peacefully for decades in Cuba. “All Eyez On Me” is also #426 on the Rolling Stone magazine list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, so Liam Withnail and Christopher Macarthur-Boyd listened to it and now they're going to talk about it. Featuring hot takes on everything from Adam Curtis' narration to the difference between a vocoder and AutoTune. All that plus Secret Posho and Tattoo Woohoo/Tattoo Boohoo on this week's episode of Enjoy An Album. Enjoy!

It was the first step on a very successful musical journey that eventually saw him come to the attention of Rough Trade founder, Geoff Travis. Travis had already signed and nurtured an act fronted by Welshman Green Gartside, called Scritti Politti. Travis saw the potential in both men and they soon began a fruitful career as part of the second incarnation of the band. Two globally successful and critically-acclaimed albums followed, Cupid & Psyche '85 and 1988's Provision before the band dispersed, a move brought on by Gartside's overwhelming distaste for the industry.During that period, Gamson spent time producing, writing and arranging for the likes of Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, occasionally with Green at his side. However, after a painful, drawn out experience recording Provision, David decided to establish himself more as a producer and writer than a band member and his first post-Scritti effort was for Tony LeMans on Prince's Paisley Park Records label. His work as a staff producer at Warner Bros saw him working with Roger Troutman, Sheila E., George Benson and another stint with Chaka Khan. Gamson's work with Meshell Ndegeocello saw him nominated for multiple Grammys. After going independent, David found himself working with Green again on Provision's follow up, 1999's 'Anomie & Bonhomie', this time solely as producer. After this, he turned his hand to film and TV, working alongside Hans Zimmer on Mission Impossible 2.More recently, he has focused on songwriting and has worked with a number of high profile artists including Kesha, Adam Lambert, Jessie J and Quinn XCII. Most notably, he received a songwriting GRAMMY nomination for his work on ‘Stronger' by Kelly Clarkson, a track which sat atop the Billboard Hot #100 for three weeks as well as many other charts worldwide. His work with Charlie XCX, a leading figure in the new PC Music/Hyper Pop genre, came about in no small part due to the fact that Cupid & Psyche '85 is held in very high regard in those circles. He also co-wrote and produced two new tracks for Scritti's Absolute 'best of' compilation with his old friend, Green Gartside, delighting fans of the band worldwide.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_GamsonRob Puricelli BiogRob Puricelli is a Music Technologist and Instructional Designer who has a healthy obsession with classic synthesizers and their history. In conjunction with former Fairlight Studio Manager, Peter Wielk, he fixes and restores Fairlight CMI's so that they can enjoy prolonged and productive lives with new owners. He also writes reviews and articles for his website, failedmuso.com, and other music-related publications, as well as hosting a weekly livestream on YouTube for the Pro Synth Network and guesting on numerous music technology podcasts and shows. Outside of his regular day job, he works alongside a number of manufacturers, demonstrating their products and lecturing at various educational and vocational establishments about music technology.www.failedmuso.comTwitter: @failedmusoInstagram: @failedmusoFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/failedmuso/

David Gamson is a Grammy-nominated keyboardist, musician, producer, songwriter, arranger, and engineer. Originally hailing from New York, he has worked with an impressive list of artists, including Kesha, Kelly Clarkson, Jessie J, Adam Lambert, Chaka Khan, Charli XCX, Meshell Ndegeocello, Green Gartside (Scritti Politti), Sheila E., George Benson, Luther Vandross, Donny Osmond, Miles Davis, Al Jarreau, Tony LeMans, Roger Troutman and Eden XO. He is best known for his distinctive synthesizer work and arrangements as a member of the popular 1980s pop band Scritti Politti for three of their albums. Gamson co-produced, co-wrote and arranged most of the songs on three of the band's albums, which include Cupid & Psyche 85 (1985), Provision (1988), and Anomie & Bonhomie (1999).A column in Vinyl Me Please describes his work as “fast-paced and packed with techniques known for accomplishing clear sonic pronunciation... It avoids melodic stasis by hurdling between distant keys, shifting between the verses and choruses.”
