In this enlightening episode of the Nacho Kids Podcast, we explore the fascinating world of stepfamilies in American history with our special guest, Lisa Wilson, the esteemed author of "A History of Stepfamilies in Early America." Lisa shares her journey of uncovering the untold stories and patterns of stepfamilies, reflecting on her personal experiences as a member of such a family. Delving into historical dynamics, Lisa discusses how the perception and roles within stepfamilies have evolved over centuries, from the challenges of integrating into what was once an emotionally-focused family model to combating age-old prejudices against stepmothers. Lori and David, our hosts, invite listeners to a thoughtful conversation about the societal shifts that have affected family structures, highlighting the continuity of certain challenges stepfamilies face today, reminiscent of those from the 18th century. They touch on topics like the legal rights of step-parents, the economic considerations of remarriage, and even the portrayal of stepparents in popular culture. Join us as we navigate this intriguing historical landscape, uncovering insights that resonate with modern stepfamilies and fostering a greater understanding of how these blended households have always been a fundamental part of the American family fabric. In this episode, we discuss: Historical context of stepfamilies Stepparents' challenges and shifts in family dynamics Societal perceptions and misconceptions Modern Community and family structures Nacho Kids Academy Success Stories: “I thought I had tried everything. Families don't all look alike. And when we blend families, the odds are statistically stacked against us from the start. But the key to remember is this: the most important thing we can do for our family, no matter how it's made up, is live in a way that directs our loved ones to the Lord. In order to do that, we have to depend on God and allow Him to lead us in the relationships we build.

Does your child have challenging and sometimes rebellious and unsafe behaviors that have you desperate for a resource?  Are you feeling fearful and desperate?   This podcast could be your answer.  Today my guest Jessi Stringham shares a resource for parents that is free and really amazing.  It is a peer led support group that is extremely well organized and    From the Changes website: https://cpsn.org Changes Parent Support Network was incorporated in December 1996 and groups officially started meeting in January 1997. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and are not affiliated with any other group or religious organization. Members include Couples, Single Parents, Stepparents, Guardians, and Grandparents. The families we support have one or more acting-out children ranging in age from middle school to older adult children. Our program provides support and tools for parents to change their own behavior, not “fix” their child. We promote independence and natural consequences for our kids' actions, which is usually not an appropriate approach for younger children. Regardless of your child's age, we will welcome you at Changes. But you may find that our members have less personal experience to draw upon and share if your child is in elementary school.  Typical problem behaviors can be: Violent or abusive Oppositional and defiant Failing grades or not attending school Substance abuse Stealing at home or shoplifting Gang involvement Running away   The purpose of the group is not to change our child's behaviors.  It is to help us give up that need to control and work on changing our own mindset and behaviors toward our children.  We can support them and support ourselves and allow them indepedence to find their own path and feel the consequences of their behaviors.   This is an amazing resources for parents who are feeling anxious and fearful and need support to know what to do.     You can call this number 8884682620. to start the process of signing up.

You probably know that kids moving between two homes thrive when all the adults — in both homes — cooperate to create stability and peace.  That's absolutely true.  It's also true that the adults (both bio and step-parents) thrive when trust and consideration exist between homes and tension is low.But when it comes to the art of healthy co-parenting, talk is cheap.  Misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and communication breakdowns are hard to avoid.  And they tend to shatter the peace for kids and adults in the delicate dynamics of co-parenting.We all need more than just talk — or information about co-parenting.  What we really need is transformation.  And the great news is that transformation is possible!  A few simple strategies and a little mindfulness go a long, long way in reducing drama and cultivating peaceful cooperation.      Slam the Gavel welcomes Lisa Goodpaster, author back to the podcast. Lisa was last on the podcast Season 4, Episode 107. Lisa, now a Childhood Trauma Educator,  was alienated from her mother by her stepmother for FORTY YEARS.  Her story is one of the most well-known documented cases of CHILD ALIENATION in the WORLD. Lisa's ability  to connect and help others UNDERSTAND the DANGERS of not Co-Parenting and the CONNECTION to PARENTAL ALIENATION is creating a positive and constructive movement forward to HELP CREATE CHANGE while clearing the PATH for other survivors to COME FORWARD.        We discussed HER BOOK, "Alienated When Parents Won't Parent," that was published by SIMON & SCHUSTER. Dr. William Bernet wrote the forward. We discussed how and why step parents won't step back and the anger in an alienated child as well as adults who are just waking up to the fact that they had been alienated from a beloved parent.      Parental Alienation is a NIGHTMARE, especially for the children going through controlling behaviors and Stockholm Syndrome as I read excerpts from her book. We talked about Dr. Bill Bernet and the Five Factor Model as well as the Stepparent's pattern in behaviors.    To Reach Lisa Goodpaster:  Founder of the Stephood ProjectAlienated When Parents Won't Parent - coming in June 2023https://www.stephoodproject.orghttps://www.facebook.com/groups/416060462986663https://www.facebook.com/lisa.goodpasterThis episode of Slam the Gavel is sponsored by CPSprotect Consulting Services. Stepfamily finances and the issues around them are some of the most important but least talked about (at least in advance) landmines that must be navigated in a new blended family. When I met my husband, Craig, we talked about all kinds of things when we were planning to marry and move in together. But you know what we didn't talk about? Stepfamily finances. We did sit down right around when we got engaged to go through each of our assets and debts. And we talked about our philosophy around debt…But that was about the extent of it.  There are a ton of things to consider around stepfamily finances. Way too much for just one podcast episode. So today I'm covering my top pieces of advice. These are things that are great to do before you tie the knot or merge your households, but if you're like me and didn't - it's never too late! It has probably never been so difficult for two people to get on the same page! The confusion around relationships and how they should be done seems to be growing by the day. This is no way to build a foundation for the future. In order to avoid the moment where we're trying to define our relationship takes a counter-cultural effot of intention and living with clear direction.
