Edward Hart's UNDER AN INDIGO SKY features A Charleston Concerto and Under an Indigo Sky, two concertos that celebrate and reflect the history and culture of the Southeastern United States. A native of Charleston SC, Hart finds inspiration in the natural beauty and multicultural heritage of his homeland. A Charleston Concerto was written to commemorate the 350th Anniversary of the City of Charleston; it features a collaboration with the Charleston Symphony and the world-renowned Harlem Quartet. It takes an unflinching yet ultimately hopeful view of the city's complex history over those three and a half centuries. Under an Indigo Sky for violin and orchestra is a musical love letter written to Hart's geographical home. It explores both the physical splendor of the mountains and coast, but also the feel and “soul” of these breathtaking places. For more information on this album, please visit Under an Indigo Sky – Navona Records. This broadcast is sponsored by Introducing Apple Music Classical on Apple Music
On this week's episode of Out and About David Commanday, artistic director of the Heartland Festival Orchestra, joins Jody Holtz in the studio to talk about the HFO's upcoming concert, 'West Side Stories'.
Liz and Steph welcome celebrated violinist Melissa White to the pod! As an early first-prize laureate of the Sphinx Competition, Melissa burst onto the concert scene in the early 2000's, and has been a trend-setter and trail-blazer ever since. A founding member of the Harlem Quartet, she reflects on how their joint experience led them (uncomfortably at times!) into exploring jazz and improv. Melissa talks about how practicing yoga became a passion and how she shares it with students and colleagues through the Intermission Retreats and Sessions. Cozy-up for a warm, authentic and honest conversation with this fantastic violinist and human!Mentioned in this episode:Sphinx Organizationhttps://www.sphinxmusic.org/Harlem String Quartethttp://harlemquartet.com/Heifitz Institutehttps://heifetzinstitute.org/Chicago Sinfoniettahttps://chicagosinfonietta.org/Intermission Sessions/Retreatshttps://www.intermissionsessions.com/Support the show (https://paypal.me/violacentric)

2. Jazzmeia Horn & Her Noble Force • Dear Love Певица чуть постарше (30) и о ней я уже рассказывал (по ссылке ниже вы найдете предыдущий альбом на канале в Телеграм). По прежнему присутствует прекрасный скэт и много свежих интересностей в манере исполнения. 3. Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga • Love For Sale Старейшина вокального джаза и экстравагантная поп-певица, после феноменального успеха альбома 2014 года, выпустили следующий, и опять попали в точку. #vocaljazz 4. Helen Sung • Quartet + (with Harlem Quartet) Имя этой пианистки пока для меня не знакомо, но альбом мне очень понравился, потому, что есть струнный квартет и стандартный: John Ellis-sax & fluite David Wong-bass Kendrick Scott-drums #contemporaryjazz

Part Geo-political saga, part ode to their origin country of Cuba, LOS HERMANOS/THE BROTHERS follows the journeys of virtuoso Afro-Cuban musician brothers, Ilmar and Aldo López-Gavilán, born in Havana in the 70s. At 14, Ilmar outgrew his island teachers and was sent to the U.S.S.R. to study violin. He never lived in Cuba again, ultimately landing as a working chamber violinist in the United States. Younger brother Aldo grew up mentored by Cuba's impressive jazz and classical pianists, his extraordinary talent achieving renown on the island, but stymied elsewhere by the 60-year-old U.S. embargo. Though they see each other when family finances and visa restrictions allow, they've never had a chance to collaborate musically—something they've longed for all their lives. Tracking their parallel lives, poignant reunion, and momentous first performances together on stages across the U.S., LOS HERMANOS / THE BROTHERS is a nuanced, intensely moving view of nations long estranged, through the lens of music and family. Featuring an electrifying, genre-bending score, composed by Cuban Aldo López-Gavilán, performed with his American brother, Ilmar, and with guest appearances by maestro Joshua Bell and the Grammy-winning Harlem Quartet, filmmakers Ken Schneider and Marcia Jarmel take the viewer on a delightful musical tour through Cuba and the US, capturing the artistry behind their music and their deep familial bond. Virtuoso Afro-Cuban-born brothers—American violinist Ilmar and Cuban pianist Aldo— live on opposite sides of a geopolitical chasm half a century wide. Los Hermanos/The Brothers tracks their parallel lives, poignant reunion, and electrifying first performances across the United States, in a nuanced, often startling view of estranged nations through the lens of music and family. In Cuba art is central to national identity. The island of 11 million people has outsized influence in dance and music worldwide. Artists are some of Cuba's most salient ambassadors, with a history of crossing divides that seem intractable to political leaders. The Gavilán brothers' dynamic and visually compelling story gives a unique and personal perspective on the evolving relationship between the United States and Cuba. Featuring a genre-bending score composed by Cuban Aldo Lopez-Gavilan performed with his American brother, Ilmar, and with guest appearances by maestro Joshua Bell and the Grammy-winning Harlem Quartet. Join us for a screening of the new documentary Los Hermanos/The Brothers followed by a discussion about the unique elements of Cuban music, the Cuban musical diaspora, representation and equity in the arts (in particular classical music), and the power of the cultural and artistic connections between Cuba and the United States. On November 18, the Feldman Chamber Music Society presented the Harlem Quartet at the Chrysler Museum of Art. Rebecca Evans shares her review.
The widely acclaimed Harlem Quartet is in residence from October 21-25, 2019 as part of Quad City Arts’ Visiting Artist Series . Founded in 2006 by the Sphinx Organization , their mission is to build diversity in classical music, and to engage new and young audiences through the discovery of a varied musical repertoire that includes works by minority composers. This Grammy Award winning quartet performs jazz, Latin, and contemporary music in addition to their classical work.

Ethnic diversity remains a troublesome question for American orchestras. Just over four percent of their musicians are African-American and Latino, according to the League of American Orchestras, and when it comes to orchestra boards and CEOs, the numbers are even starker: only one percent. Ethnic diversity is also a rare sight among guest soloists and conductors. This issue was front and center during the third annual SphinxCon conference, hosted last weekend by the Detroit-based Sphinx Organization. Its founder and president, Aaron Dworkin, joins us for this week's Conducting Business, along with two active musicians: Weston Sprott, a trombonist in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra; and Melissa White, a violinist who performs in the Harlem Quartet. In this segment our guests discuss: The advantages and shortcomings of blind auditions, in which orchestra job candidates perform behind a screen. The challenges of developing a diverse audition pool in the first place. Where Dworkin believes orchestras fall short compared with other sectors. How orchestras and ensembles can broaden repertoire and formats beyond the traditional concert hall. Where subtle (and not-so-subtle) forms of racism emerge in the hiring process for orchestra players. Where signs of change are occurring (including in Nashville and New York). The graph below illustrates the percentages of black and Hispanic musicians enrolled in major music conservatories. Listen to the full segment at the top of this page and share your thoughts below.
