Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

Many years ago, Julie Landsman auditioned for principal French hornist for New York’s Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. The MET held their auditions behind a screen to avoid prejudice by the judges. Landsman did well in her audition and ended up winning the competition. But when she stepped out from behind the screen, some of the all-male judges walked to the rear of the room and turned their backs on her. Apparently, they were looking for someone else. When the Israelites asked for a king, God accommodated the people and gave them a man who was physically imposing like the other nations had (1 Samuel 8:5; 9:2). But because Saul’s first years as king were marked by faithlessness and disobedience, God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint a new king (16:1–13). When Samuel saw Eliab, the oldest son, he assumed that God had chosen him to be king because he was physically impressive. But God challenged Samuel’s thinking: “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (v. 7). God had chosen David to lead His people (v. 12). When evaluating people’s ability and suitability for His purposes, God looks at character, will, and motives. He invites us to be attuned to see the world and people as He does—focusing on peoples’ hearts and not their outward appearance or credentials.

It's time for our mid-season finale and today for our guest, we have one of the greatest bass trombonists out there, Mr. George Curran! Mr. Curran became the bass trombonist of the New York Philharmonic in 2013 and prior to that he was a member of Atlanta Symphony, and a fellow with the New World Symphony. Due to his terrific personality and incredible skills on the trombone, he has performed with numerous orchestras such as the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Detroit, Hong Kong Philharmonic, and many more. In addition to his impressive orchestral career, Mr. Curran is a renowned soloist performing solos in two International Trombone Festivals, being featured for the United States Air Force Band, and even the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival in South Korea. With such a great resume and history in the trombone world, we get right down to how he got into music by diving into the story of how he quit engineering to pursue music, how he transitioned from euphonium to bass trombone, how his orchestral career has progressed through the years and of course, we hit him with some rapid fire questions resulting in one of the most controversial responses yet! Fun Fact: When I (Darien) was first trying to start this Podcast with Lawson, I was studying with Mr. Curran at the time and asked him if this podcast was a good idea and how we should go about it. He supported the idea fully and told me how to reach out to all these wonderful musicians for these interviews! Bono is a singer, songwriter and the frontman of U2, one of the most recognisable and successful bands in music history. They have sold over 170 million albums, won 22 Grammys – more than any other band – and two Golden Globe Awards. Bono is also known for his work as an activist, especially in Africa where he has played a prominent role in campaigns which tackle poverty and HIV/AIDs. Bono was born Paul Hewson in Dublin in 1960. A schoolfriend named him Bono after a hearing aid shop in Dublin called Bono Vox, and the name stuck. When he was 16, Bono saw a poster on his school noticeboard posted by Larry Mullen Jr asking for people to form a rock band. He responded with enthusiasm and before long was rehearsing with his future bandmates Larry, who played the drums, guitarist the Edge and bassist Adam Clayton. The band's debut album Boy came out in 1980 and five years later they made an impact at the Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium when Bono disappeared from the stage for two minutes to get up close to the audience. One newspaper later described this incident as one of the 50 key events in rock history. U2's subsequent albums, including the Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum and Achtung Baby, cemented their status as global superstars, filling arenas around the world. In 2004 Bono co-founded One, an international campaigning organisation which was set up with the aim of ending extreme poverty and preventable disease by 2030. Bono met his future wife, Ali, at school when they were both teenagers. They married in 1982 and have four children. His 28 year run with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra gave him the opportunity to play alongside some of the trumpet world's greatest talents and support opera's legendary performers. Today you'll get to meet Joseph Anderer, recently retired Principal Horn of our Met Orchestra. Joe began his Met career in 1984 and has served many roles, including as acting Principal Horn, Second horn, Third horn, and ultimately was appointed Principal Horn by James Levine in 2003, a position he held until this season in 2020. In his spare time, Joe was Principal Horn of Orchestra St. Luke's (for 46 years!) where he is a founding member. He has had an AMAZINGLY illustrious career, and I had a blast listening to all of his stories and advice! In this episode, Joe tells us about his childhood, his upbringing in Philly, schooling at Juilliard, and living in NYC. He spoils us with the greatest stories from his careers both as a freelancer in NYC for 14 years, AND as an orchestral musician at the MET for 36 years & at OSL for 46 years. Did you know how serious he is about his coffee? And that his cousin is the chef/owner at Anton's on Hudson Street? I am honored to speak with Joe today, and can't wait for you to meet him. Join us as Nancy and Leigh tell us about how they got started on their instruments, share hilarious stories on the job, talk about the cool nooks and crannies of the behind the scenes backstage area at the MET Opera House, impart their wisdom on auditions, the ins and outs of sitting in the orchestra, and what their roles specifically entail. Nancy has been the Associate Concertmaster of the MET orchestra since 1989, and Leigh has been the Associate Principal Bass since 1993. Leigh is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, and Nancy graduated from Stanford University and the Vienna Hochschule für Musik. Their performances have taken them across the globe and they are also very much looked upto for their pedagogy. Nancy currently teaches at the Mannes School of Music, and Leigh at Bard Conservatory of Music. They are also the violin and bass coaches for musicians at the Verbier Festival in the summers! They are also just the most awesome people ever and I learn so much from just speaking with them. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/julia-choi/support
