This week, Joe is featuring Pianist Marian McPartland from her 1998 Concord Records recording, titled “Just Friends.”

Rotating group performs monthly at Savage Wonder Scroll down the page of gig posters at the Jazzwomen! website and you'll notice Kim Peralta appears in each one. As the ensemble's founder and drummer, she's guaranteed a gig. "I formed the group so I could play with high-caliber musicians, which helps improve my playing," she says. "I book the dates and provide enough rhythmic reinforcement that they show up." Peralta has established a third Thursday residency at Savage Wonder in Beacon (the next one is Feb. 19) and will perform at Estilo Y Vino in May. The members are booked up for Women's History Month, so they're skipping the March date at Savage Wonder and will return on April 16. Peralta assembled a roster of 14 musicians, some of whom have played with Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie and Wynton Marsalis. Saxophonist Kate Anderson toured with The Temptations and The Four Tops and bass player Jennifer Vincent has performed with k.d. lang and Patti LaBelle. In addition to playing jazz piano, Heather Bennett is the organist and music director at a New Jersey church. Ellie Lee describes herself as a "bold, fiery artist" who "composes in a variety of styles, including jazz, classical, pop and gospel." Peralta began recruiting pianists, saxophonists and bass players in 2023. Sax whiz Jenny Hill adds flute to her arsenal, and Rachel Therrien, who has worked with Arturo O'Farrill, is the sole trumpeter. Peralta selects the lineups for each gig like a baseball manager. The basic combo is a piano trio (with bass and drums), though adding a saxophone expands the sonic palette; Therrien once rounded out a quintet. The players are so accomplished that Peralta needs only to compile a set list and, if necessary, provide lead sheets. As the exclamation point indicates, Jazzwomen! wants to make a statement. In addition to originals, the group performs compositions by Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby. "Melba Liston played trombone with the best of them, and Mary Lou Williams wrote 500 songs," says Peralta, who referenced as inspiration the National Public Radio show, "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz," which the English-born musician and educator hosted from 1978 to 2011. Now known as "Piano Jazz" (McPartland died in 2013), it is NPR's longest-running cultural program. The gig posters online also include likenesses of Mike Aiese, who does not match the profile. But Peralta notes that there is a general shortage of bass players, so he sat in at Savage Wonder last month and will do so again next week. At the January show, sax player Maria Lazzaro emitted a furious flurry of notes during "In a Mellow Tone," before displaying her tonal command with bluesy slurs that lifted the classic "On Green Dolphin Street." Pianist Janice Friedman played trills like a heavy metal guitarist. Performing together for the first time, the two musicians engaged in a gentle cutting contest. Often at jazz concerts, the bass player gets a break or two, but Aiese took flight on all but one tune. Peralta kept it simple on her compact kit. Even though Aiese walked, vamped and played solid solos, Peralto says she is always on the lookout to replace him, which he understands. "It's magical to perform with all women," she says. "It's hard to describe, but it's special." Savage Wonder is located at 139 Main St. in Beacon. The Feb. 19 performance, which begins at 8 p.m., is free, but tickets are required. It's been a hot minute since the boys did a "pop" episode, but given this very special installment is devoted to jazz-rock gods of the seventies Steely Dan, maybe this doesn't count. The Dan's somewhat controversial 1980's sign-off gets a good look in and then various tributes are dissected, with Pat arguing that jazz musicians need to take the kid gloves off when confronting this most seminal of cross-over hit-makers. Brandon Sanders, has always cut his own unique path. Born in Kansas City but spending his formative years in Compton, Brandon grew up in a musical household. He also honed his love of Jazz at the Kansas City jazz club, Casablanca, run by his grandmother.  But first, college called. After playing basketball for a junior college near Los Angeles, he enrolled at the behest of his grandmother—actually, she did the enrolling for him—at the University of Kansas. While studying communications there, Brandon became a walk-on practice player for the top-seeded team in the country where quickly gained a reputation as a dogged defender.  After receiving his undergraduate degree in communications, and Master's in social work at Kansas, Brandon dedicated himself to that field. But eventually his passion for music caught up with him. So, at age 25, he taught himself how to play drums, until a Kansas City drummer named Todd Strait, who used to play with Marian McPartland, took Brandon under his wing. And with  years of intense practice, Brandon attained such a high level of proficiency that he was accepted at Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he formed friendships and musical associations with future jazz greats including Warren Wolf, trumpeter Darren Barrett, and drummer Kendrick Scott. He started playing in various bands at Boston clubs including Wally's Jazz Cafe and the Wonder Bar, gaining experience that eventually led him New York. Now  living in Brooklyn, Brandon has a third album titled “Lasting Impression,” on the heels of two critically acclaimed releases “Brandon Sanders: The Tables Will Turn,” and his first titled, “Compton's Finest.”  In this episode,  I talk with Brandon  about his remarkable career trajectory, and the forming of collaborations with a stellar list of jazz all-stars to create a path to his musical success.

Darek Oles (Oleszkiewicz) was born on February 20, 1963 in Wroclaw, Poland. At the age of five Oles began his music education at the State Music School in Wroclaw. Piano was his first instrument, but later he played guitar, electric bass and finally at eighteen years old, he switched to accoustic bass. While in his teens he played with amateur groups, evolving in popular music styles from rock, blues, jazz-rock to straight ahead jazz. In the early 1980's, Oles participated in various jazz festivals and national competitions for young musicians. In 1983, he was the most awarded musician at the Jazz Juniors in Cracow, winning the first individual prize, first prize for jazz composition and a second prize in jazz combo category. Later that year Oles was invited by Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski, a jazz legend in Poland, to join saxophonist's quartet on tour.In the following five years Darek Oles was working steadily with some of the best jazz bands in the country such as: Zbigniew Namyslowski Quartet, Tomasz Szukalski Quartet, Henryk Majewski Quintet, Wojciech Karolak Trio and Andrzej Jagodzinski Trio and Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski Quartet. With those groups he recorded for Polish Jazz, Polskie Nagrania, East Wind and also for the radio and television in Poland and abroad. Darek was touring extensively in Poland, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Cuba, Mexico and performed at major festivals, concerts and jazz club venues.In 1988, Darek Oles arrived in Los Angeles with a simple plan in mind: to broaden his musical horizon. One year later he received a full scholarship from California Institute Of The Arts and began studies with the legendary bassist Charlie Haden. After graduation in 1992, he accepted a teaching position at the Institute, where he has been conducting jazz ensembles and teaching bass ever since. Since 2002 Oles has been a jazz faculty member at the University Of California in Irvine.Aside from his teaching duties, Darek Oles has been very active as a performer and became one of the most sought after bass players on the West Coast. “Oles” (his American nick-name) had the opportunity to perform and record with the greatest masters in jazz. This dedication mix is long overdue. In 1996, my friend Dave played me Journey to Satchidanada and I was blown away. A year or two later, I recovered a weathered copy of the record from a book and record store on East 7th Street in Manhattan while digging around with the same friend and it became a prized possession. Over the coming years I educated myself on more of her music, digging up copies here and there, and feel a bit lucky to have grabbed most of her records before the "craze" hit sometime in the late 2000s. It's truly unique and beautiful music - I admit that I can't totally stomach some of the more free-leaning cuts she recorded, in the same way I can't get into the late work of her also-legendary husband, but when I put these albums on the turntable it truly is a bit of an "inter-dimensional" experience, like the cover art of her World Galaxy album. Belated happy birthday to Alice Coltrane! Besides the first track, which is a clip from a seminal session she did with Marian McPartland for NPR's "Piano Jazz" series, these are all from my personal copies of her albums.

Mary Lou Williams is one of the great figures in jazz — pianist, arranger and teacher. We'll listen to some of Mary Lou Williams' earliest recordings as a stride pianist, then as a pianist and arranger as a member of the Andy Kirk band, and later the Benny Goodman, and Duke Ellington bands. We'll hear some of her work with the beboppers of the late 1940s. We'll also sample an interview she did in the 1970s with Marian McPartland, and we'll finish with a live recording she did at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1978.

In the 87th Hot Box we scratched the surface of the hot topic of females in jazz, and now we to try to go a little deeper, so the 88th picks out some more women whose contribution to jazz has been stellar. And then we take a listen to an extract from the famous Piano Jazz series presented by Marian McPartland, in the studio with her friend, the legendary Mary Lou Williams. Joe Morello was one of the most innovative and masterful drummers of the last century, but did you know he was playing Violin with the Boston Symphony at age 9? Learn about how the iconic "Take 5" Drummer made the switch to drums and became the legend we know today. Steve Fidyk is a legendary drummer and educator in his own right, and he was lucky enough to study with Joe and have a very close relationship with him as a student and a friend. Joe began his music life as a virtuosic violinist who became discouraged at 15 after not feeling that he could surpass the sound of one of his heros - so he began studying drums with Joe Sefcik and George Lawrence Stone..and then the rest his history. Steve does a wonderful job of very thoroughly taking us through Joe's entire life including the hardships of being legally blind and pursuing a musical career. It was on this day in 1945 that English pianist Marian Turner became Marian McPartland when she wed American cornetist Jimmy McPartland in Germany.  On today's "A Day in the Life," we explore the long and fruitful career of Marian McPartland from her days playing USO shows in World War II, to her long running NPR program, "Piano Jazz".

Jazz pianist and composer Noah Baerman's tenacity and his cutting edge yet soulful music have made him an inspiring figure to a growing legion of admirers. Ten years after nearly walking away from the piano due to his struggles with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), an incurable connective tissue disorder with which he was born, Noah is playing and composing with more authority than ever. These challenges and his experiences as a foster parent have deepened his already fierce commitment to "message music." Noah earned his B.Mus. and M.M. from Rutgers University in the 1990s under the mentorship of Kenny Barron. Since then he has participated in and composed for numerous recordings, including eight CDs as a bandleader. His 2003 release Patch Kit features jazz legends Ron Carter and Ben Riley and revolves around his struggles with EDS ("Much more than just a commendable exercise in education and humanitarianism, this is a wonderful and inspiring musical journey that's a testament to the power of jazz, humor and positive energy to turn a challenging situation into one of joy and hope." - Joel Roberts, All About Jazz - New York). Patch Kit raised awareness and funds for EDS and led to an invitation from Marian McPartland to be a guest on her long-running NPR program Piano Jazz in 2005. Two compositions premiered on that show then appeared on his album Soul Force, a tribute to the life and message of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Soul Force featured Noah's writing for large ensemble, here featuring trombonist Robin Eubanks, percussionist Warren Smith and saxophonists Steve Wilson, Jimmy Greene, Wayne Escoffery and Claire Daly. In 2008 he was awarded a "New Works" grant from Chamber Music America/Doris Duke Foundation. The resulting Know Thyself, an emotionally sweeping 65 minute suite for septet, was premiered at Wesleyan University's Center for the Arts and at the Jazz Gallery in New York and recorded for a 2010 release. Baerman lives in Connecticut, and has been gaining a strong reputation as an educator. He teaches at several institutions including Wesleyan University, where he directs the Jazz Ensemble and teaches graduate courses in music. His teaching concepts have been codified through nine well-regarded instructional books published by the Alfred Publishing Company. His blog, NB Pontificates, covers topics ranging from frank discussions of his experiences as a survivor of disability and child sexual abuse to his popular musical Top 10 lists and his own vegetarian recipes. In 2012 he was named Artistic Director of Resonant Motion, Inc., an organization that seeks to explore and deepen connections between music and social causes, as well as forming the Jazz Samaritan Alliance, a collective of accomplished artists working to compose and perform socially conscious music. Other projects in the works include a multi-media collaboration with photographer Carla Ten Eyck depicting survivors of cancer and other life-shaking challenges, a foster care-themed set of compositions titled "There But for the Grace," and a series of largely improvised collaborations with his wife, visual and performance artist Kate Ten Eyck.
