TEXT us here!Liz and Steph reunite after an eight-month podcast hiatus, bringing with them powerful stories of personal transformation through health challenges. With remarkable vulnerability, Steph shares her breast cancer journey—the fear, the treatments, and ultimately the strength she discovered within herself and from her support network. Her experience serves as both inspiration and gentle reminder about the life-saving importance of regular mammograms.Meanwhile, Liz opens up about navigating life with rare Addison's disease, describing her evolution from merely managing symptoms to exploring deeper healing possibilities. Her realization that autoimmunity requires listening to her body's limits represents a profound shift away from the constant hustle that once defined her professional life. Together, these parallel health journeys have given both musicians a new perspective on what truly matters. The conversation weaves through serious topics with natural moments of lightness—from Netflix recommendations to memories of watching Celine Dion's documentary together. What emerges most clearly is how this extended break has crystallized their vision for the podcast's future. Though they'll produce fewer episodes moving forward, they're recommitting to the deep, curiosity-driven conversations that have fueled their own personal growth since the podcast's pandemic-era beginnings..This isn't just a return—it's a renewal of purpose. As they prepare to welcome guests again (with one interview already recorded), Steph and Liz invite listeners to connect beyond social media, through their email list, and direct messaging. Our guest in this episode is American bassist Joseph Conyers! Thanks to social media, Joe (@weatherclef) has become known worldwide for his approachable and warm personality as well as his absolutely stunning sound and technique. We had the pleasure of getting to know Joe on a more personal level, talking about his humble beginnings in Georgia, and how it informed his attitude towards mentoring youth. Joe started the non-profit Project 440 to use music as a tool to teach young people to pursue their passion in life. We talk about Joe's philosophies on music education, “Play to Play”, and we even try to pin him down on his favorite weather app…so there's something for everyone in this convo! **If you enjoyed this episode, please consider rating and writing a quick review for our podcast! 10% discount on The ArcRest! Our guest in this episode is violist Matthew Lipman, one of his generation's great talents! After sufficient fan-girling, we got to ask Matt all of our burning questions about life in the most high-profile of freelancing careers: as a soloist and professional chamber musician. If there's anything universal about a career in music, it's how we stitch our identities into how we perceive success. We talk with Matt about what success means to him, as well as the important yet restrictive practices that are preventing us from exposing our art to a broader audience, and maybe even a little astrology - yes, we may be getting a little ‘woo-woo' today…Enjoy getting to know Matt, a beautiful musician with an important voice in the future of ‘classical' music!**If you enjoyed this episode, please consider rating and writing a quick review for our podcast! 10% discount on The ArcRest! As freelance musicians, we have a very unique income situation. Our guest on this episode is no stranger to the financial insecurity of freelancing, and has made it her mission to give us the tools to feel more in-control of our money. Anamarie Diaz, also known as ‘The Financial Flutist', has taken it upon herself to translate the world of finance for musicians! We talk about the fluctuating nature of a musician's income, how our ‘starving artist mentality' can be a self-fulfilling prophecy, and how money management does NOT mean cutting out things that you love. In this episode, we learn about what happened when two freelancers: Ellen Trainer and Marjorie Goldberg, started a movement for change in the Philadelphia Musicians' Union: Local 77. A true story of grassroots organizing in the musician community, Ellen's and Marj's experiences with poor working conditions and treatment by management inspired them to run for office. We talk with Ellen and Marj about how the COVID pandemic affected people's attitude towards unions, their philosophy on negotiating with management, and how educating the public can make them a vital ally. We found our conversation with Ellen and Marj to be inspiring - one in the column for freelancers taking control of their own destiny to benefit the whole community!**If you enjoyed this episode, please consider rating and writing a quick review for our podcast! 20% off at arialights.com, plus FREE shipping! From her appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to her headlining gig at the American Viola Society Festival in June of 2022, she is becoming known for her unique brand of…sometimes musical… comedy. Isabel is very open about her struggles with performance anxiety and shares how it surfaces in her stand-up gigs. We discuss the value of being a beginner at something, and her experience with building a career from the bottom up. Liz and Steph have a delightful conversation with violist CAROL RODLAND! Carol enjoys a distinguished international career as a concert and recording artist whose playing has been described as “larger than life, sweetly in tune and infinitely variegated”. Ms Rodland is also currently professor of viola and chamber music at the Julliard School, where she herself studied with the godmother of the viola, the incomparable Karen Tuttle. We talk about her full-circle tour of Europe and the US, studying and teaching with viola giants Karen Tuttle and Kim Kashkashian. What's it like to be besties with Kim K? How does her recent injury help her teaching? How does community service fit into her busy schedule? We dig into these subjects and way more with Carol, who's such a gracious guru - committed to giving each student exactly what they need to reach their potential.
