Ep #173 - with Sweet Plantain, World Fusion String Quartet Sweet Plantain is a dynamic latin-influenced string quartet from NYC but they are quite unusual in that their violinists double on trombone and mandolin. They also bring a wide range of World Music into their performances and original compositions. In this episode we get to hear their arrangement of the classic Brazilian samba “Chega De Saudade” and also some original compositions that feature rap, Swedish fusion and the Cole Porter song "Love For Sale." They have traveled around the world but mostly perform in NYC where they enjoy bringing their music to their communities. Eddie Venegas is my guest who is the violinist/trombonist for the group. As one of the world's best-selling musicians, Lady Gaga has set the musical bar high. Since her debut album, The Fame (2008), she has sold more than 124 million records and scooped numerous awards, including twelve Grammy Awards and eighteen MTV Music Video Awards. Yet she is much more than a musician. At the helm of the Haus of Gaga--a close-knit circle of behind-the-scenes creatives--Lady Gaga is a performance artist like no other; her forward-thinking fashions and innovations mark her out as the ultimate maverick. Recently, she has reinvented herself as an accomplished jazz performer, dueting with legendary singer Tony Bennett on Cheek to Cheek (2014) and Love For Sale (2021), while also proving herself a consummate actor with lead roles in A Star Is Born (2018) and House of Gucci (2021). And with her advocacy for LGBT rights and active championing of kindness via the Born This Way Foundation, co-founded with her mother Cynthia Germanotta in 2011, it's clear to see why her fans adore her. Lady Gaga: Applause (Palazzo Editions, 2022) is a celebration of a true artist of our time. Illustrated throughout with stunning photography and complementary fashion segments, this comprehensive history follows Lady Gaga's ever-evolving and often unpredictable career, and is testament to her many talents. Have You Meet Mrs. Jones? de Rodgers y Hart; Love for Sale de Cole Porter, Like Someone in Love de Van Hausen y Burke o Well you needn’t de Theolionius Monk por sólo citar algunas perlas que contiene este poderoso trabajo. TRACKS 1-Ping Pong O'Connell 2-Have You Meet Mrs. Jones? Ep #113 - with Sweet Plantain, World Fusion String Quartet Sweet Plantain is a dynamic latin-influenced string quartet from NYC but they are quite unusual in that their violinists double on trombone and mandolin. 2. Jazzmeia Horn & Her Noble Force • Dear Love 3. Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga • Love For Sale #vocaljazz 4. Helen Sung • Quartet + (with Harlem Quartet) John Ellis-sax & fluite David Wong-bass Kendrick Scott-drums #contemporaryjazz

Our first Jazz Feature for the New Year! We begin a month of Features that are classics and also raved about and praised by the Jazz critics and press. In November we featured albums that were dismissed by the critics but despite that became Jazz classics. This month's Features are classics and critically acclaimed. Dexter Gordon's "Go!" is a classic. The great tenor saxophonist is in top form and backed by a superb rhythm section with Sonny Clark on piano, Edward "Butch" Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. This also is Dexter's own personal favorite of his many recordings. One original, "Cheese Cake' by Dexter opens the album on a high level then various standards and ballads are performed plus the definitive version of Cole Porter's "Love For Sale". "Go!" is an essential album in anyone's collection. Hear it tonight!
