As May draws to a close, life is in motion. My house is on the market, boxes are piling up, and I've been scouting new places with room for a proper studio. While everything shifts around me, the music still grounds me. This mix is a snapshot of where I am right now—mentally, emotionally, musically. Send us a textJason Greenlaw grew up on the East Coast, just outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned his bachelor of arts in Jazz Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, studying guitar under Joe Negri and improvisation under Geri Allen, before moving to Colorado in 2020. He is currently based in the Denver/Boulder area of Colorado, where he focuses primarily on jazz guitar, playing in solo shows, small jazz combos, pit orchestras, and wedding bands. He is also a teacher, having taught hundreds of students ranging from 6 to 80 years old, and he loves inspiring passion for music in his audiences and his students.Greenlaw has been interested in music from a very young age. His first instrument was the violin in elementary school (around first or second grade), and he eventually picked up the alto saxophone, playing that instrument into middle school. By sixth grade, he switched to the guitar and never looked back. At that point, he started performing in the jazz band at the beginning of high school and delved into private music instruction outside of school.Greenlaw's private teacher started exposing him to more jazz music during that time, but it wasn't until he started and graduated college that he started performing it on a more serious level on his own. Especially in middle and high school, he also listened to 90s grunge music, and his dad loved classic rock, including Santana and Billy Cobham. In the end, though, jazz became his primary focus as he explored music more on his own. Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear podcast featuring the news and culture from peak to peak. Enjoy our third and final segment of this week's tribute to Jimi Hendrix, and yet more jazz renditions of Jimi Hendrix classics. The playlist features World Saxophone Quartet; Idris Muhammad; Mac Gollehon, Lester Bowie; Jay Anderson; Robert Dick; Mina Agossi, Archie Shepp; Triad, Geri Allen, Mark Batson, Scott Batson; Kamikaze Ground Crew; Liro Rantala, Lars Danielsson, Peter Erskine; Bugge Wesseltoft. It's time to Discover, Learn, and Play Jazz Piano!Anita G. Houser was born and raised in Georgetown, South Carolina. At age seven, Anita's singing ability was recognized and nurtured by her church's Minister of Music, who often featured her as a soloist. Anita quickly discovered that she had a gift and passion for music. She started piano lessons at age eight, and taught her first piano student at age 15. She earned 1st chair clarinet in her high school band. In chorus she competed with students throughout the state, earning placement in the South Carolina All-State Chorus and Honors Chorus, and was featured as a soloist. Anita also performed as piano accompanist for her high school chorus. She was also hired to sing and play piano for various events throughout the community. In 1989, Anita graduated from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, with a Bachelor's of Arts in Music, Magna Cum Laude, with concentration in Classical Piano Performance. While in college, she traveled on tour with the glee club. The Spelman College Jazz Ensemble, with Anita as keyboardist, opened for the late great jazz pianist, Geri Allen, at the Capitol City Jazz Fest in Washington, DC.Post college, Anita shifted from the pursuit of music to enjoy world travel. This desire was realized as a Delta Airlines flight attendant for four years. Marriage, family, and entrepreneurship as a work at home mother, became her next chapter.Anita rekindled her love of music through taking and teaching private piano lessons. She was an integral part of the music ministry at Unity of Columbia, South Carolina, where jazz was often performed. Anita moved to Augusta, Georgia, and became Music Director of Unity of Augusta. She also established a private studio, teaching piano and voice. Anita sang and played keyboard in a local R & B band, performed jazz and R&B at private events, and provided piano accompaniment for school soloists and choruses. In addition to her roles as wife, mother, musician, and teacher, Anita was the family caregiver during her mother's four-year Alzheimer's journey. As both a desire to further develop her singing, and have an outlet from the demands of her daily life, Anita applied and was awarded a scholarship to train with Richard Fink IV, founder of Throga (throat-yoga), a patented vocal training technique for speakers and singers of all genres. Anita became Throga's first certified instructor. The inner tug of Anita's love of jazz piano inspired her to take formal lessons with Donald Macey in Augusta, Georgia. During the pandemic, Anita stumbled on the jazzpianoskills.com website. Dr. Bob's training, resources, and support continue to be a guiding light in Anita's jazz piano development. She was invited to play keyboard for Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra, and piano for the Palmetto Chamber Orchestra. Anita recently sang her original song, “God Dwells Within You” with the Columbia County Orchestra. The music was arranged, for orchestra, by David Ezell, Artistic Director. David is a longtime mentor and friend to Anita.Anita teaches piano and voice remotely. Her current project is JAM, Jazz Awakening Mind, a monthly spiritual gathering led by musicians, featuring jazz music.Support the show

In this episode, we talk with accomplished 29 year old drummer, Aaron Seeber, about not only his background but his new album, First Move, recorded live in Brooklyn at Ornithology Jazz Club on October 19, 2021, and released in May, 2022, on Cellar Live Records. On this extraordinary album, he's joined by vibraphonist Warren Wolf, alto saxophonist Tim Green, pianist Sullivan Fortner, and bassist Ugonna Okegwo. The recording highlights selections by timeless luminaries including Charlie Parker and Charles Mingus, as well as modern legends such as Geri Allen and Mulgrew Miller. While in high school, Aaron attended Paul Carr's Jazz Academy of Music (JAM) Camp, where Aaron is now on as faculty drum instructor and combo teacher. He later attended SUNY Purchase, where he studied Jazz Drums under the tutelage of renowned instructors Kenny Washington and John Riley. Aaron's shared the stage with numerous greats including Eric Reed, Pete Malinverni, Warren Wolf, Grant Stewart, Cyrille Aimée, Jeremy Pelt, Paul Bollenback, Tim Green, Ugonna Okegwo, Bruce Harris, Gary Smulyan, Mike Ledonne, Freddie Redd, Butch Warren, Chuck Redd, and many others. First Move is Aaron's first release as both drummer and bandleader.
Russell Kranes is the consummate professional musician. Born in Queens and raised in Connecticut, Russell studied jazz piano under the late, great master, Geri Allen. This week my guest is vocalist and fellow Cass Technical High School alumna, Shahida Nurullah. Born into a family of artists, the Detroit native was raised and influenced by the rhythms and cultures of both New York and Detroit. Her formal musical training began at Cass Technical High School; a school distinguished as a cynosure for developing the highly talented, well-known jazz talents, and continued in studies and breadth of collaborations with the finest jazz musicians the Motor City has to offer. She has worked regularly with Kenny Cox, Marion Hayden, Donald Walden, Teddy Harris, Marcus Belgrave, Kamau Kenyatta, and others, as well as with ex-Detroiters Yusef Lateef and Geri Allen. This podcast is sponsored byMichigan ArtShareColdPlunge RecordsTo become a sponsor for this podcast, go to the Patreon link below.https://www.patreon.com/TiaTime1Produced by Green Bow Music
Hailed by the New York Times as “a tenor saxophonist with an enigmatic, elegant and harddriving style,” JD Allen is a bright light on today's international jazz scene. His unique and compelling voice on the instrument – the result of a patient and painstaking confrontation with the fundamentals of the art – has earned Allen years of critical attention signaling his ascension to the upper ranks of the contemporary jazz world. Originally from Detroit, Allen's apprenticeship, anchored by his lengthy tenure with Betty Carter, occurred largely in New York, where he worked with legends Lester Bowie, George Cables, Ron Carter, Louis Hayes, Frank Foster Big Band, Winard Harper, Dave Douglas, Cindy Blackman, Butch Morris, David Murray, Wallace Roney, Rufus Reid and Geri Allen.
The beautiful debut album of an emerging artist like Zoh Amba [pictured], previously unreleased tracks from the legendary Village Vanguard concerts by Geri Allen, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, the edgy new project by Vincent Peirani and the guitar saxophone interactions of Walter Smith III & Matthew Stevens, Dave Gisler & David Murray, and Tony Malaby & Ben Monder are just some of our favorite things of this month. We hope you enjoy them too. The playlist features also Kinan Azmeh; David Krakauer; Hugo Carvalhais; Lara Rosseel; Chris Dingman. Today it felt quite inappropriate to be upbeat and excited about all the beautiful new albums that keep coming out. After an aggressive virus has brought the world to a near halt for almost two years, we are now facing another life-threatening turn of events, this time entirely man-made. The playlist features music inspired by the eternal struggle between war and peace, from Charles Mingus' fear of the atomic Bomb--by way of Alexis Korner--to John Coltrane's sonic prayer for peace on earth during the tour that took him where that bomb had been dropped, Nagasaki. The playlist features Sade; Conjure; Alexis Korner; Geri Allen; Emile Parisien; Grant Green; John Coltrane.
