In this episode, we meet roadside ghosts and road-adjacent spectres from across the UK (and beyond). Have you ever picked up a hitchhiker? No, neither have we. And these modern legends might make you feel a bit better about it... This episode was edited by Joseph Burrows - Audio Editor. LoreBoys nether say die! Joining me as my guest for this episode is paranormal investigator Hayley Stevens, creator of the award-winning science blog ‘Hayley is a Ghost'. Hayley has been investigating paranormal mysteries for over fifteen years, conducting her research using a scientific methodology to seek rational explanations for the unusual happenings that people report to her. She has written for the Skeptic magazine and is also a fellow podcaster, producing episodes of the Spooktator Podcast as well as assisting with a recent BBC podcast about the Battersea Poltergeist. In the interview we talk about some of the cases she has worked on and how her approach to paranormal investigation has developed over time. We also discuss what that has revealed to her about how people try and understand the strange mysteries that fascinate us, and how that might be done, without being too skeptical or overly credulous. The excellent 'Hayley is a Ghost' blog can be found at https://hayleyisaghost.co.uk/. You can support Some Other Sphere via Ko-Fi. To buy the podcast a coffee, please go to https://ko-fi.com/someotherspherepodcast. Thank you! The Some Other Sphere Theme is from Purple Planet Music - 'Hubbub' by Chris Martyn and Geoff Harvey.

We return to the world of the paranormal this week in the company of writer, presenter and producer, Danny Robins. Danny's latest project is diving into a Poltergeist case that caused national headlines back in the mid 1950s but seemed to have dropped off the paranormal radar until a decade ago. In January 1956, 63 Whycliffe Road saw the arrival of one of the most active poltergeist cases in British history. Seemingly focusing on 15 year old Shirley Hitchings, the polt turned the lives of the Hitchings family upside down for the best part of decade, finally petering out in 1968. Danny's wonderful series focuses on the work of the forgotten British parasychologist, Harold Chibbert and his hands on investigation of the disembodied spirit who claimed his name was Donald amongst many other things. Featuring dramatic recreations with a stellar case including Toby Jones and Dafne Keen amongst others, The Battersea Poltergeist has been a phenomenal success via BBC Sounds. With Danny hosting the show, we discuss the shows germination, the two experts Ciaran O'Keefe and Evelyn Hollow and how Danny came across the case. We dive into the world of the poltergeist and wrestle with the concept of just how anyone could have even faked so much of the incredible evidence witnessed over so many years. A big thank you to Danny for joining me and to Hayley Stevens for introducing us properly. This week András is back and we start by philosophizing a bit about what a new decade really means and look forward to a few nice skeptics meetings coming up. We also talk about the future for Golden Rice and why it is so important despite what Greenpeace and EU politicians think. From history we hear about the so-called ‘psychic' Doris Stokes who was born this week in 1920 and Pontus Pokes the Pope for telling others to show restraint while he himself lost his temper just a few days ago. Should he be the one who negotiate peace in the Middle East? We think not. In the News this week: MedWatch.de turns into full online magazine, the people behind the Manifesto Against Pseudotherapies are getting sued by homeopaths and Prince William starts the ‘Earthshot Prize' to fight the climate crisis. We look back on a decade of Edzard Ernst, praise Hayley Stevens for continuing to spread light over ghost hunting and look forward to Natalie Grams new book coming out in February. Also, the ‘El Esceptico' magazine has recently examined the pharmaceutical industry in an excellent way. We end by handing another Really Right to the Daily Mail(!), this time for taking a critical look at the New Year's diet recommendations. Enjoy!
