WHAT IF…? asks the big question: “What if we lied to you about this being an anthology of connected stories?” Eduardo, Peach3z, Chris, and Danny are back to talk about the season finale to the Marvel Studios animated Disney+ series, “What If… the Watcher Broke His Oath?” The Watcher visits previous episodes (and one postponed episode!) to gather up a team of A̶v̶e̶n̶g̶e̶r̶s̶ Guardians of the Multiverse to face off against Ultron. Is it a fitting finale for the season? Would things have been better if they'd stayed disconnected, or does the cinematic Marvel Method make that impossible? And what's up with the Infinity Rules? The Watcher breaks his oath to not interfere with the multiverse. With the help of Supreme Strange, the Watcher assembles a team to save the multiverse from destruction by Ultron. In his infinite wisdom, the Watcher chooses Captain Peggy Carter, Star-Lord T'Challa, Killmonger, Gamora, and Thor. Natasha Romanoff also joins them in the fight against Ultron. The team is eventually able to separate the Infinity Stones from Ultron's body, but Gamora's Infinity Crusher fails to defeat the android. But Black Widow and Captain Carter save the day by uploading Armin Zola's programming into Ultron's body. Zola destroys Ultron, but takes over his armor and the Infinity Stones. Killmonger attempts to steal the armor and stones for himself, but Strange sacrifices his life to hold Zola and Killmonger at bay in a pocket dimension. The Watcher then returns the team to each of their universes and timelines, with Natasha joining a universe in which Black Widow had died. In the mid-credits scene, Black Widow reveals to Captain Carter that Steve Rogers has been found alive inside the long-lost HYDRA Stomper.   This episode stars Jeffrey Wright, Lake Bell, Hayley Atwell, Mick Wingert, Frank Grillo, Georges St. Pierre, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Michael B. Jordan, Chadwick Boseman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Jones, Kurt Russell, and Tom Hiddleston.    For more details on the film/TV references that spill out of Kris's (and occasionally Amy's) brain, as well as links to other podcasts, visit the episode page on our website: Episode page link Email us at themarvelousmadames@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter  Instagram  Tumblr

Director James Gunn, who helmed the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films, will be returning for the roughly 40-minute short, which he says will be required viewing for fans of the franchise. Now, Gunn has expanded on his promotion for the special to reveal that it will also be "introducing one of the greatest MCU characters of all time."   Before the Guardians of the Galaxy take back the spotlight in their special, they'll be tagging along in Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder. The film is expected to come out on May 6, 2022 and features the remaining Guardians as supporting characters, with Gunn communicating with Waititi to ensure that the characters were handled consistently ahead of their next big screen outing.   The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special arrives on Disney+ in 2022, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters May 23, 2023.     Inside Marvel's ‘What If…?' Finale, Season 2 Plans and the T'Challa Spinoff That Never Was https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/marvel-what-if-season-1-finale-tchalla-spin-off-chadwick-boseman-1235082366/ “There was planning to have Star Lord T'Challa spin off into his own show,” [Driector Bryan] Andrews tells Variety. “We were all very excited. We know [Chadwick] would have loved it, too.”   There's also a brief moment in the finale where we meet an alternate version of Gamora with a sort of space Tony Stark. Will we get to see more of that universe in Season 2?   Bradley: That's a definite yes. Basically what happened was we originally had an episode planned for earlier in the season that was a fun, light-hearted, living, breathing Tony Stark-centric episode with Gamora. However, due to the COVID pandemic, one of our animation houses was hit incredibly hard, and the episode needed to be pushed into Season 2, because it would not be finished in time. Given everything that we've all went through over the past two years, pushing an episode of television is absolutely nothing in comparison. And we understood. We hope fans enjoy the ride next year.   (2 Part Story) Marvel's What If...? team promises 'resolution' in season finale and teases season 2 https://ew.com/tv/marvels-what-if-season-1-finale-ac-bradley-bryan-andrews/ ...At least we know season 2 is coming since Bradley says that all the episodes of next season have already been written. "Going into the second season, we're sticking with anthology form, and it's going to be all-new stories, lots of fun, new heroes, and pulling more from Phase Four than we were obviously able to this season," she says. "Hopefully, we'll see hints of Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Black Widow characters. The fun of What If...? is that we get to explore the entire infinite multiverse, so we try and bounce around as much as we can. I want to play with all these characters, and as much as I love Captain Carter, we've got to share the love. I'm very excited to show new worlds, new heroes."   Bradley also hints that while many of season 1's episodes featured "big, let's end the world, let's kill everyone" arcs, season 2 episodes will "focus a lot more on the character stories and these heroes and showing a different side of them that people don't expect and hopefully they can relate to."   "We're not a show that's designed to set up Avengers 5," she adds. "It's supposed to be just about entertainment and what these heroes mean to us. When I took the job, one of my rules was let's be free. We're in the multiverse — we should be as free as can be and go and run into the wild, into the stories the movies will never do, into the stories the TV shows will never do, and show both Disney and the fans all the possibilities of these characters." What If...? Head Writer Teases Gamora "Prequel" Episode in Season 2 https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/what-if-gamora-episode-season-2-prequel-spoilers/ As Bradley explained in an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com, the episode recounting those versions of Tony and Gamora ended up being delayed due to production problems tied to the COVID-19 pandemic. But as Bradley reassured, that story is coming at some point in the series' second season, as a sort of "prequel" for her appearance in the finale.   "We definitely will," Bradley said, when asked if we'll see more of Gamora. "What happened with the Gamora episode, there was originally supposed to be — early on in the season — a Tony and Gamora-centric episode. However, due to COVID and production delays, one of our amazing, amazing animation houses around the globe got hit pretty hard by the pandemic. And we were left with two choices: push the entire season to later this year, or push this one episode to Season 2. We made the choice to push that episode to Season 2, and hoped that seeing Gamora in the finale serves as a teaser for what is to come. In season two, it'll almost be like a little bit of a prequel, we'll see how Tony and Gamora became friends, because those two don't even interact in the main MCU universe."   "Given all the upheaval that we've been through in the past two years, pushing an episode is nothing, and we completely understand," Bradley continued. "Our animation houses have been absolute rock stars in pulling off this show." ‘WandaVision' Spinoff Starring Kathryn Hahn in the Works at Disney Plus (EXCLUSIVE) https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/wandavision-spinoff-kathryn-hahn-1235082445/ A “WandaVision” spinoff starring Kathryn Hahn is in development at Disney Plus from Marvel Studios, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.   Hahn would reprise the role of Agatha Harkness in the series, which is described by sources as a dark comedy, though exact plot details remain under wraps. “WandaVision” head writer Jac Schaeffer would serve as the writer and executive producer on the project. Should the spinoff go forward, it would be the first project Schaeffer has set up with Marvel since she signed an overall deal with them and 20th Television in May.   FEEDBACK [1:13:38]   TWITTER   https://twitter.com/LegendsofSHIELD/status/1445896570143117312?s=20 Legends S.H.I.E.L.D. @LegendsofSHIELD Describe this week's @whatifofficial episode "What If...The Watcher Broke His Oath?" in one word. Meaning, an official part of the continuity of the fictional universes which officially comprise the MCU: Earth-199999 and its adjacent universes confirmed as parts of the franchise. This week's @EchoChamberFP is a 'TWO Parter!' In 'Part One' we look at three very different films, two of which are from Antoine Fuqua. 'Urge' is directed by Aaron Kaufman written by Jerry Stahl. A weekend getaway takes a dangerous turn when a mysterious nightclub owner (Pierce Brosnanl) introduces a group of friends to a new designer drug. Stripped of their inhibitions, they start living out their wildest fantasies — but what starts out as a fun night of partying quickly turns deadly, as the island paradise deteriorates into a tropical madhouse. 'Infinite' is the new film from, Antoine Fuqua, Ian Shorr & Todd Stein, adapted from D. Eric Maikranz's 'The Reincarnationist Papers' for the big screen. It follows Evan McCauley (Mark Wahlberg), a self-medicated man diagnosed as schizophrenic because he's plagued by memories of places he's never visited. But just as he's on the verge of a mental breakdown, Evan is visited by the Infinites, a secret society who informs him that not only are his memories real, but they are from all his past lives. The Infinites take Evan into their fold and help him unlock the answers to his memories. Together, they must stop one of their own, Bathurst (Chiwetel Ejiofor), from his mission to destroy humanity. Antoine Fuqua & Nic Pizzolatto adapt the Danish film (same name) 'The Guilty'. The film takes place over the course of a single morning in a 911 dispatch call center. Call operator Joe Baylor (Gyllenhaal) tries to save a caller in grave danger-but he soon discovers that nothing is as it seems, and facing the truth is the only way out. In this universe, Ultron defeated the Avengers, annihilating humanity with a nuclear holocaust. Natasha Romanoff & Clint Barton are the only two Avengers (and possibly people) left on Earth. After stealing the Infinity Stones from Thanos, Ultron becomes aware of The Watcher and the multiverse. While Ultron & his minions are out destroying other universes, Black Widow & Hawkeye head to Siberia. They resurrect Dr. Zola's program and use his code to try and destroy Ultron, but they are unsuccessful. Clint dies in the fight, leaving Natasha alive but alone. Ultron then attacks The Watcher, who finally realizes he must intervene to save the multiverse. The Watcher allies with Supreme Strange, who is his only hope of stopping Ultron.    This episode stars Jeremy Renner, Jeffrey Wright, Lake Bell, Ross Marquand, Toby Jones, and Benedict Cumberbatch.    For more details on the film/TV references that spill out of Kris's (and occasionally Amy's) brain, as well as links to other podcasts, visit the episode page on our website: Episode page link Email us at themarvelousmadames@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter  Instagram  Tumblr

The suits seek declaratory relief that these blockbuster characters are ineligible for copyright termination as works made for hire. If Marvel loses, Disney would have to share ownership of characters worth billions.   Marvel Studios Has Over 30 Projects in Active Development https://www.cbr.com/marvel-studios-30-plus-projects-in-development/ When veteran Marvel Studios producer Victoria Alonso was asked by 221radio if the company had 35 projects in the works, Alonso laughingly replied, "We are currently working on 31 projects, don't add 4 more, please." If that sounds like a lot to take on at once, Alonso agrees. Yet, the producer went on to assure fans that the studio is prepared for some hit-or-miss projects so long as they stay true to the human characters and interconnectedness of the MCU.   "It is a question about how are we handling multiple plates in the air at the same time," Alonso continued, "and the biggest thing is that sometimes the plates fall, and, you know, what are you going to do then? We want people to understand that the idea that we have, to tell these connected stories, it is important that the world knows that the characters we create, their stories have to do with how humans interact with each other."   Disney+   Marvel's What If…? team reveals season 1 finale intel: There's 'a bigger plan' AC Bradley Admits … We kill Tony a LOT https://ew.com/tv/marvel-what-if-ac-bradley-bryan-andrews-episode-8/ Season 1 was originally meant to be 10 episodes, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic one of those episodes had to be pushed to season 2, and Bradley says the delayed episode helped balance the other, darker stories. "Our 10th episode was a more light, upbeat Tony Stark episode," she says. "I noticed on Twitter we're getting a lot of crap for killing Tony a lot. He has become the Kenny of the What If…? universe by accident."   The episodes have mirrored the comics by ending on cliffhangers that each tease a larger story. And it seems that all of those threads may actually come together in the season's final episode. It's also possible that the already announced second season could follow up on certain stories, while new methods of remotely making animated series may help the show to avoid the issues the pandemic has posed and craft longer episodes. For now, however, the show does still have one limit: the MCU.   What If...? Episodes Are Shorter than Planned Because of COVID https://deadline.com/2021/09/what-if-marvel-series-a-c-bradley-podcast-interview-1234843778/ https://www.cbr.com/marvel-what-if-short-runtime-covid/ "What If...? comics ended abruptly and really dark to prove that the main timeline is the better timeline," Bradley said. "We've used that as our reason to cut stories off a little bit shorter. All these episodes could have been 45 minutes. Some of the animatics were 35 minutes, but due to animation and Covid, we cut them a little bit shorter than we would have liked."   Disney+ Pushes Ms. Marvel to 2022 https://variety.com/lists/marvel-studios-release-schedule/ https://www.cbr.com/disney-plus-ms-marvel-2022/ https://twitter.com/adambvary/status/1440844586016927744 Variety Senior Entertainment Writer Adam B. Vary recently posted an update regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe's release schedule. "I've confirmed what was obvious to most Marvel Studios observers: [Ms. Marvel] has moved from a late 2021 release on Disney Plus to 2022," Vary tweeted.   This is not the first report indicating Ms. Marvel's debut shift. TVLine's Matt Webb Mitovich previously suggested the series had been delayed until early a 2022 delay. Film insider Amit Chaudhari recently stated that the series was set to hit Disney+ in February.     Disney+ Removes Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter Short Film https://thedirect.com/article/disney-plus-removal-hayley-atwell-agent-carter-short-film Marvel Studios' Agent Carter One-Shot was completely removed from Disney+, seemingly across all territories.   In mid-September 2021, Marvel Studios' Agent Carter One-Shot was added to Disney+ within its own special section/page . Beforehand, the short could only be found in Iron Man 3 's EXTRAS section; Agent Carter has been removed there as well.   There doesn't seem to be any clear indication as to why Disney+ would remove a section solely dedicated to the Agent Carter One-Shot.   The One-Shot originally appeared on the 2013 DVD and digital release of Iron Man 3 and gave some brief insight into how Peggy eventually started up what viewers knew as SHIELD. From there, the Agent Carter ABC show was also born, spanning two seasons on the television network .   On its own, the One-Shot exemplifies the brilliance of Atwell's character; it reminds viewers of why she is now a returning force to the franchise and re-emphasizes her importance to MCU lore as a whole .   It's possible that its removal could have been nothing more than in preparation for bigger and better things to come for Peggy; maybe the streaming service pulled the gun and wants to highlight her more so down the line, possibly aligning with the Season 1 finale of What If...? .   Video Games   https://gamerant.com/marvel-vs-capcom-2-disney-capcom-revival-discussion-report/ This campaign to bring back Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 was started by Maximilian Dood, a YouTuber whose content revolves around fighting games. He started the campaign earlier this year under "#FREEMVC2" in order to gather support to hopefully re-release the crossover game onto modern systems. This caught the attention of Digital Eclipse, a studio that has worked with both Disney and Capcom to remaster some of its old games. Studio head Mike Mika showed his support for re-releasing the game, along with giving the game a proper remaster treatment. In a recent interview with Shacknews, Mika brings further thoughts to the table regarding how this re-release could be possible.   PlayComics Episode 91: Marvel vs Capcom 2 New Age of Heroes with Trent Seely (Continuity Nod) https://playcomics.com/marvel-vs-capcom-2-new-age-of-heroes-with-trent-seely-continuity-nod/     FEEDBACK [1:08:24]   TWITTER   https://twitter.com/LegendsofSHIELD/status/1441009180190642177 Legends S.H.I.E.L.D. @LegendsofSHIELD Describe this week's @whatifofficial episode "What If...Thor Were An Only Child?" in one word. Not to mention a few tragic stories along the way too. But I certainly would not take any of it too seriously. This week's episode especially was meant more as a fun dalliance than any other with events that could only be told via a cartoon IMO.   But all this is from a guy who like The Phantom Menace, dislikes Empire Strikes Back and is often wrong. So I might just be drinking the cool aid.   Erasure (Too Lazy !!) — 09/26/2021 That's on this was one of my favorite episodes too along with T'Challa Star Lord. On this episode of Why Watch That:Our reviews (so far) at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, including:Petite MamanFollowing a girl's journey to her mother's childhood home, French auteur Céline Sciamma's latest is a tender tale of intergenerational connection.Céline Sciamma's TIFF '19 selection Portrait of a Lady on Fire garnered international acclaim for its sumptuous rendering of queer female desire and the overwhelming power of both truly looking and truly being seen. Sciamma's follow-up brings the writer-director's exquisite craft and acute insights into longing to bear on a tale of childhood grief and wonder. After her grandmother dies, Nelly (Joséphine Sanz) is taken to her mother's childhood home. While her parents go about cleaning out the house, Nelly explores the surrounding woods. She encounters Marion (Gabrielle Sanz), a girl exactly Nelly's age and to whom she bears a striking resemblance. The pair become fast friends, constructing a hut together, sharing lunches, and talking over the life transitions both are in the midst of. (Marion is only days away from going to hospital for an operation.) Incrementally, the girls' eerie similarities yield revelations that merge events of the past with those of the present.Working once again with cinematographer Claire Mathon and production designer Lionel Brison, Sciamma gently ushers us into a series of hushed, crepuscular spaces where the spectral meets the everyday and time seems to fold in on itself. Drawing lovely, subtle performances from her young stars, Sciamma allows us to see the world through Nelly and Marion's eyes. The result is a film of tremendous tenderness and sombre beauty that, like all of Sciamma's films, celebrates the spectrum of feminine connection. -DIANA SANCHEZSPECIAL PRESENTATIONSFrance, 2021French70 minutesDirectorCéline SciammaCastJoséphine Sanz, Gabrielle Sanz, Nina Meurisse, Stéphane Varupenne, Margo AbascalScreenplayCéline SciammaMothering SundayOlivia Colman and Colin Firth star in this deeply affecting adaptation of Graham Swift's bittersweet novel about secret love in post-WWI England.Featuring captivating performances from up-and-coming talents Odessa Young (TIFF '18's Assassination Nation) and Josh O'Connor (The Crown), and Oscar-winning veterans Olivia Colman, Colin Firth, and Glenda Jackson, this exquisite adaptation of Booker Prize–winning author Graham Swift's eponymous novella transports us to Britain's inter-war years for a story of grief, responsibility, and hidden love.Jane (Young) works as a maid for the Nivens (Colman and Firth), an aging home counties couple who, like so many other families, lost their sons on the battlefields of the First World War. Jane is having a secret affair with Paul (O'Connor), son of the Nivens' neighbours, the Sheringhams. Paul is the only member of his peer group to return from the front, a status that has left him with a powerful dose of survivor's guilt and a weighty sense of duty to his family, who expects him to pursue a legal career and marry a woman of his station — which is to say, not the likes of Jane.On Mothering Sunday, her day off, Jane trysts with Paul at his house while his parents are away. There is a sense of quiet idyll to their stolen hours of lovemaking and Jane's gentle exploration of this world of wealth and prestige. Yet a double shadow hangs over this precious day, arising from the horrors of the recent past and the disappointments and sacrifices looming in the pair's future.Scripted by Alice Birch (TIFF '16 world premiere Lady Macbeth) and directed by Eva Husson (TIFF '18's Girls of the Sun), Mothering Sunday draws us into Jane and Paul's rendezvous, vividly evoking both its sensuous peaks and sobering undercurrents before zooming ahead into a future time when all this can be placed in perspective. -DIANA SANCHEZSPECIAL PRESENTATIONSUnited Kingdom, 2021English104 minutesDirectorEva HussonCastOdessa Young, Josh O'Connor, Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, Olivia Colman, Colin Firth, Glenda Jackson, Patsy Ferran, Emma D'ArcyScreenplayAlice BirchThe StarlingMelissa McCarthy, Chris O'Dowd and Kevin Kline star in Theodore Melfi's bittersweet tale of a couple working their way toward the other side of grief.Melissa McCarthy has long proved she can play both wild comedy and heartbreaking drama. Working again with her St. Vincent director Theodore Melfi and buoyed by a superb supporting cast, she soars in a complex role that draws upon her impeccable timing and emotional instincts.Lilly (McCarthy) is always the one who holds it together when things go south for her family. A year has passed since she and her husband Jack (Chris O'Dowd) lost their infant daughter. Grief got the better of Jack, who's now recovering in a psychiatric clinic. Lilly holds down her job at the grocery store, keeps up the family's expansive rural property, and faithfully makes the weekly two-hour journey to visit her husband.Concerned that Lilly isn't tending to her own grieving process, a counsellor at Jack's clinic suggests that she see a local therapist, Larry (Kevin Kline, also appearing in Festival selection The Good House). The counsellor neglects to mention that Larry long ago gave up psychology to become a veterinarian — a practice that will prove germane when a dive-bombing starling begins wreaking havoc in Lilly's garden. The intricacies of Matt Harris's sensitive, canny screenplay allow us to observe the ways that every act of love — whether toward a spouse, a client, or an insistent bird — requires both generosity and boundary setting. Lilly can't bear the notion of being a quitter, but without some self-care, all her efforts to care for others could come to naught.Helmed with rich insight into the healing process by Melfi (Academy Award– nominated for Hidden Figures), The Starling lights upon a rare balance of levity and gravity, mischief and tenderness. -CAMERON BAILEYSPECIAL PRESENTATIONSUnited States of America, 2021English103 minutesDirectorTheodore MelfiCastMelissa McCarthy, Chris O'Dowd, Timothy Olyphant, Skyler Gisondo, Daveed Diggs, Laura Harrier, Rosalind Chao, Loretta Devine, Kevin KlineScreenplayMatt HarrisPublicistNetflixThe Electrical Life of Louis Wain An eccentric artist (Benedict Cumberbatch) introduces Victorian London to the delights of cats, in Will Sharpe's enlightening biopic. From Ancient Egypt to TikTok, cats have accompanied humans on life's journey. In a dazzling, career-best performance, Benedict Cumberbatch plays one of Britain's most influential eccentrics as a flurry of wild ideas and prodigious artistic output.Louis Wain (Cumberbatch, also at the Festival in The Power of the Dog) brims with creativity, even as his life in the 1880s oscillates between the delightful and the dizzying. To support his widowed mother and five younger sisters, the academy-trained artist sells drawings of animals from the country fair. His skilled and speedy portraiture impresses, but his often stormy view of the world and those in it keeps him from engaging much with society. That is, until he hires a kind, curious governess for his youngest sisters, Emily Richardson (Claire Foy), who illuminates his life in a way even he'd never imagined. Love blooms across the class divide — albeit to the chagrin of Louis's stern sister Caroline (Andrea Riseborough), second oldest and second in command.Writer-director Will Sharpe (television's Flowers, whose co-star Olivia Colman narrates here) uses dynamic visual technique and colourfully shifting mood to convey Louis's complicated mind, fickle wealth, momentous love, and consuming grief. Cumberbatch's transcendent performance stands at the centre of an impressive cast that includes Toby Jones and Adeel Akhtar (also at the Festival in Ali & Ava). Alive with imagination in every scene, The Electrical Life of Louis Wain shows just how we came to live in a cat's world. The story revolves around the women of the Von Riesen clan: writer Yoli (Alison Pill), who's tormented by self-doubt and is going through a tough, protracted divorce; her sister Elf (Sarah Gadon), a well-known concert pianist whose bouts with depression threaten to consume her; their steadfast mother Lottie (Mare Winningham); their no-nonsense aunt Tina (Mimi Kuzyk); and Yoli's precocious daughter Nora (Amybeth McNulty). The family are no strangers to sorrow. They left the Mennonite community after their patriarch (Donal Logue) unexpectedly killed himself. (It's not said explicitly, but the film suggests his church played a key role in his decision.) How the Von Riesens, especially Yoli and Elf, confront — and fail to confront — tragedy and trauma is the central focus of the film. The sisters' wisecracking banter and acute awareness of each other's foibles indicates a profound love and mutual dependency, but as Yoli struggles to understand Elf and protect her from her demons, the women's fundamental differences come to the fore.Oscillating powerfully between extremes of joy and sadness, All My Puny Sorrows is also one of the most erudite, literary films you will see this year. Much of the close relationship between Yoli and Elf is based on their love of books (stretching from Philip Larkin to D.H. Lawrence), reflecting their intellectual curiosity and capacity for life — which only makes the film all the more heartbreaking, and its ultimate embrace of life so touching. -STEVE GRAVESTOCKSPECIAL PRESENTATIONSCanada, 2021English103 minutesDirectorMichael McGowanCastAlison Pill, Sarah Gadon, Mare Winningham, Amybeth McNulty, Donal LogueScreenplayMichael McGowanEncounterA decorated Marine (Riz Ahmed) goes on a rescue mission to save his two young sons from an inhuman threat, in the latest from director Michael Pearce.Suspenseful, wildly imaginative, and eerily resonant, British director Michael Pearce's follow-up to his TIFF '17 Platform competitor Beast catapults us into a world where every encounter could lead to peril. Featuring an adrenalized lead performance from Riz Ahmed, this is a thriller for the age of cultural division and seemingly endless existential threat.A decorated marine, Malik Khan (Ahmed) is trained to identify risk. But what if the risk appears totally ordinary? Malik sees bugs. Evil bugs. Alien bugs that seem to be seizing control of people, one after another. Malik can't convince the world to sound the alarm, but he can at least protect his two young sons from global parasitic invasion — which might involve kidnapping them from the home of Malik's estranged wife.Written with Joe Barton (TIFF '17 world premiere The Ritual), Pearce's leap into large-scale filmmaking, with its nod to genre classics like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, brilliantly fuses dazzling spectacle with character-driven drama. Encounter's visuals are by turns gorgeous and shocking. Its atmosphere of American heartland creepiness is both familiar and unnerving.Yet the film ultimately rests on its performances. Oscar winner Octavia Spencer is masterful in a supporting role that prompts us to reconsider everything we've seen, while Ahmed cements his reputation as one of the most compelling actors working today. Whether playfully joshing with his boys, confronting far-right extremists, or defending himself against a human-insect hybrid, Ahmed imbues Malik's every gesture with magnetism and mystery, leading up to a showdown that blurs the cosmic with the cognitive. -CAMERON BAILEYSPECIAL PRESENTATIONSUnited Kingdom, United States of America, 2021English108 minutesDirectorMichael PearceCastRiz Ahmed, Octavia Spencer, Rory CochraneScreenplayJoe Barton, Michael PearcePublicistAmazon StudiosThe GuiltyJake Gyllenhaal stars in Antoine Fuqua's thriller set over the course of a single morning in a 911 dispatch centre.Versatile action auteur Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, screening at the Festival as part of TIFF Rewind) reunites with his Southpaw star Jake Gyllenhaal in this riveting film about an emergency responder's desperate race to save a distressed caller. Unfolding in real time within the confines of a frenetic 911 dispatch centre, Fuqua's The Guilty delivers on its high-concept premise, channelled through another powerhouse performance from Gyllenhaal. As a wildfire rages towards Los Angeles, embittered police officer Joe Bayler (Gyllenhaal) winds down a chaotic but tedious shift answering emergency calls — a punitive demotion he received ahead of an imminent disciplinary hearing. His ennui is soon interrupted by a cryptic call from a woman (Riley Keough) who appears to be attempting to call her child, but is in fact discreetly reporting her own abduction. Working with the meagre clues she is able to provide, Joe throws all his skill and intuition towards ensuring her safety, but as the severity of the crime comes to light, Joe's own psychological state begins to fray and he is forced to reconcile with demons of his own.Every tense moment plays out on Gyllenhaal's face, as he spars with a dynamic ensemble of voices in his headset, including those of Ethan Hawke, Peter Sarsgaard, and Paul Dano. Building off a script from True Detective creator-writer Nic Pizzolatto, Fuqua and cinematographer Maz Makhani crosscut the white-knuckle drama with a montage of monitors broadcasting the apocalyptic inferno outside; a surreal, but all too familiar reflection of our mad world. -CAMERON BAILEYSPECIAL PRESENTATIONSUnited States of America, 2021English90 minutesDirectorAntoine FuquaCastJake Gyllenhaal, Ethan Hawke, Riley Keough, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Eli Goree, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, David Castañeda, Paul Dano, Peter SarsgaardScreenplayNic PizzolattoPublicistNetflixLakewoodNaomi Watts stars in Phillip Noyce's nerve-rattling thriller about a mother struggling to rescue her son from a school shooter.Amy Carr (Naomi Watts) is out for what should have been a restorative morning run when a friend calls with terrifying news: the local high school attended by Noah, her teenage son, has been besieged by an active shooter. Deep within a network of forest paths surrounding her home, miles from town and nearly overwhelmed by panic, Amy refuses to succumb to hopelessness. With her smartphone as her sole means of intervention, she will draw upon every resource she can think of to ensure that her son survives the attack.Helmed by veteran director Phillip Noyce (Rabbit-Proof Fence, Dead Calm) and written by Chris Sparling, Lakewood plunges us headlong into a desperate scenario unfolding in real time. The film echoes Sparling's acclaimed screenplay for Buried, a selection at TIFF 2010, in the sense that most of it unfolds as a one-person show, with Amy navigating the situation remotely. Yet Noyce's film also functions as a tribute to the power of a community working together in the face of calamity, as Amy enlists the assistance of an auto-body shop manager, a 911 operator, a rideshare driver, and one of her co-workers at the Marion County Division of Taxation to help her take matters into her own hands. It is rare to encounter a thriller like Lakewood, at once high-concept and heartfelt, exhilarating and poignant. It is also a showcase for Watts, who masterfully conveys a captivating fusion of impromptu heroism and maternal devotion. -DESCRIPTION COURTESY OF TIFFGALA PRESENTATIONSCanada, 2021English84 minutesDirectorPhillip NoyceCastNaomi WattsScreenplayChris Sparling See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema In this installment of Catching Up On Cinema's “Ladies' Night” event month, Kyle and Trevor review David Leitch's, Atomic Blonde (2017)! Starring Charlize Theron as the titular Atomic Blonde, the film is a slick and stylish spy thriller set in East/West Berlin during the turbulent final days of the Soviet Union. The solo directorial debut of David Leitch (who co-directed John Wick), the film is a strong initial offering that would pave the way for it's director to immediately take the reins of blockbuster films in the years to come. With a supporting cast consisting of the likes of James McAvoy, Sofia Boutella, John Goodman, Eddie Marsan, and Toby Jones, the film is never dull and is surprisingly generous to it's performers and dialogue despite the action heavy pedigree of it's production crew. While Charlize Theron is a truly spectacular in the film, both as an actress and action performer, perhaps the greatest compliment to the production must be given to Sam Hargrave and all of the folks at 87Eleven Action Design, who would serve to conceive, construct and perform one of the most memorable action set pieces in recent cinema history: https://youtu.be/lO3Q8OHqNxY John Wick 3: Parabellum (2019) Review: https://anchor.fm/catchinguponcinema/episodes/Catching-Up-On-Cinema-Theatrical-Edition---John-Wick-Chapter-3---Parabellum-2019-e45ol9 Episode 136 – Trainspotting (1996): https://anchor.fm/catchinguponcinema/episodes/Trainspotting-1996-e137435 Episode 135 – The World's End (2013): https://anchor.fm/catchinguponcinema/episodes/The-Worlds-End-2013-e12pc30 Episode 36 – Man of Tai Chi (2013): https://anchor.fm/catchinguponcinema/episodes/Episode-36---Man-of-Tai-Chi-2013-e43h43 Follow us on Instagram @catchinguponcinema Follow us on Twitter @CatchingCinema Like, share, subscribe, and we'll catch you next time!

So many movies. 2007 saw two of his less appreciated adaptations, 1408 and The Mist, so Nat and Ben decided to lump them together in one super episode about people being stuck inside and slowly losing their minds. We're back with a new episode! This week we take a look at the under-appreciated "Atomic Blonde," which hosts Michael D Friedman and Martin Kelley both had as our favorite film from 2017. We examine what makes this film so complete, and why it may not have received the love it deserved. About Atomic Blonde (2017): An undercover MI6 agent is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents. Directed by David Leitch and starring Charlize Theron as Lorraine and James McAvoy as Percival, along with Toby Jones, John Goodman, Sofia Boutella, Eddie Marsan and Bill Skarsgard, Atomic Blonde is a stylistic thriller that is gorgeous, riveting and action packed.

With Francine Stock Actor and writer Toby Jones discusses the film that still resonates with him almost 30 years after he first saw it, In The Soup. Alexandre Rockwell's comedy beat Reservoir Dogs to the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Festival in 1992, but while Quentin Tarantino's movie went on to box office glory, In The Soup was so badly forgotten that within a decade only one battered copy remained. Toby reveals the part he played in helping Rockwell's movie survive.

We return to the world of the paranormal this week in the company of writer, presenter and producer, Danny Robins. Danny's latest project is diving into a Poltergeist case that caused national headlines back in the mid 1950s but seemed to have dropped off the paranormal radar until a decade ago.   In January 1956, 63 Whycliffe Road saw the arrival of one of the most active poltergeist cases in British history. Seemingly focusing on 15 year old Shirley Hitchings, the polt turned the lives of the Hitchings family upside down for the best part of decade, finally petering out in 1968.   Danny's wonderful series focuses on the work of the forgotten British parasychologist, Harold Chibbert and his hands on investigation of the disembodied spirit who claimed his name was Donald amongst many other things.   Featuring dramatic recreations with a stellar case including Toby Jones and Dafne Keen amongst others, The Battersea Poltergeist has been a phenomenal success via BBC Sounds. With Danny hosting the show, we discuss the shows germination, the two experts Ciaran O'Keefe and Evelyn Hollow and how Danny came across the case.    We dive into the world of the poltergeist and wrestle with the concept of just how anyone could have even faked so much of the incredible evidence witnessed over so many years.   A big thank you to Danny for joining me and to Hayley Stevens for introducing us properly.   You can find the show here:   Danny's website is here:   Our website is now up and running, you can find us here!   Our Patreon is now live, with bonus content, early release of the regular show, articles and monthly prizes for everyone who signs up!
