Iain Sinclair is one of the UK's greatest living writers. Famed for his novels, such as Downriver, and documentary prose, of which London Orbital is perhaps the best known, Sinclair began his career self-publishing his own poetry on his Albion Village Press in the 1970s. 2013 saw the publication of three books – two poetry collections and a longer book on his relationship with the Beats, American Smoke. Colin Waters travelled to Sinclair's home in Hackney, where he asked Sinclair about his Scottish roots, John Clare and his lost 1970s collection Red Eye, which was being published by Test Centre. Columbia River Locks close for annual maintenance this week Today we'll talk about an annual event that began this week: it's the annual, temporary closing of the US Army Corps of Engineers Portland District locks at the Bonneville, The Dalles and John Day dams. Each year the locks close for two weeks to allow technicians to inspect them and repair and maintain the equipment. It's an essential preventive step that helps keep the Columbia Snake River system carrying commerce year round. Downriver ports know it's happening so they can plan around it, and some even do their own maintenance during that time.
On this episode of Sanctioned by Stefanie. I welcome Comedy Store trained, comedian, writer and actor Dave Mishevitz. Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana - bottom of the map, end of the world and one of the ‘fastest disappearing places on earth'. Once fertile farmland, the bird's foot-like piece of land that stretches south from New Orleans is fraying and breaking away under the pressure of industrial canal systems, rising sea levels and a leveed Mississippi river, divorced from building up the land around her with all that rich sediment she carries. Something needs to be done - and fast - but for the communities of people who have been woven into this landscape for generations, it's not a simple fix.In Episode 2 I meet up with passionate ecologist, Dave Baker under the shade of an ancient oak tree in New Orleans' City Park to get the lowdown on the urgency of this local land loss. He's terrified for the area, but what about those who are on the front line of it? I wanted to get onto the ground, so off we go down to the ‘end of the world' to meet people who are watching it play out in real time. There are no neat tie-ups here, just a simmering sigh of foreboding and a hell of a lot of heart. Love you, Louisiana.CreditsFeaturing the voices of Dave Baker, Barbara at The Lighthouse Lodge, Mitch in his truck, Wade Pitre in his John Deere buggy, the Army Corps of Engineers guys up on the levy and Justine DeMolle at Changes RestaurantProduced by Lucia Scazzocchio of Social Broadcasts, Executive-Produced by Lina Prestwood of Scenery Studios, Mixing & Mastering: Jobina TinnemansMusic by Hannah Marshall To go deeper into this episode head to low-lines.com - including a BONUS EPISODE of the full conversation with Dave Baker.

Something a bit different to kick off 2024. This is a mini episode reflecting on how a stunning duet by Elvis Costello and Elton John introduced me to the wonderful music of David Ackles. They performed a beautiful version of Ackles' Down River on Spectacle, backed by James Burton, Allen Toussaint, Pete Thomas and Davey Faragher. In this episode, I look back at that performance and the career of David Ackles, who released four fine albums between 1968 and 1973.

It's a great Thursday to be on a car lot as we talk about Kia's plan for a send-off of the Rio. We also talk about EV's effects on road conditions, as well as consumer preferences when it comes to product placement. Show Notes with links:One of the least expensive new cars on the market, the Kia Rio, is set to be discontinued after the 2023 model year.Rio's sales in 2022 were 26,996, marking a 14% drop, and as of July this year, sales have decreased by another 5%.Kia's Monterrey, Mexico plant, where the Rio is manufactured, is set to be retooled for the production of two small electric vehicles.Light trucks, encompassing minivans, crossovers, SUVs, and pickups, made up 79% of all new U.S. vehicle sales in the first half of 2023.Five Most Affordable New Vehicles are now: Mitsubishi Mirage ($19,205), Kia Rio ($20,157), Nissan Versa ($20,763), Hyundai Venue ($23,971), and Nissan Sentra ($23,994).Amidst the rapid adoption of EVs, a recent UK study raises concerns about their potential impact on road health. Researchers suggest that the added weight of BEVs, especially larger models, could lead to more rapid road wear and increased potholes, challenging existing infrastructure and sparking debates on vehicle taxationU.K. newspaper, the Telegraph, with data from the University of Leeds, reported that BEVs cause up to 2.32 times more wear on roads than ICE vehicles, especially those weighing over 4409 On average, BEVs are heavier by about 687 lbs more due to their batteries. The “fourth power formula” suggests that doubling a vehicle's axle weight can cause 16 times more road damage. As BEVs don't contribute to gas taxes, discussions arise about taxing vehicles based on weight or battery weight. Norway already taxes vehicles at a rate based on their weight.Apart from main roads, residential roads, driveways, garage floors, and public parking garages may also suffer damage from heavier BEVs. The debate on BEV infrastructure needs to consider these aspects in addition to charger availability.A BENlabs survey reveals 52% of U.S. consumers favor TV shows with product placements over traditional ads. This shift comes as ad-free streaming rises and traditional TV ads lose traction.66% of North American viewers ignore TV ads; many divert their attention during commercials; 39% believe TV ads lack relevance and value; 31% find them repetitive.Top brands in movie placements include Apple, Coca-Cola, and Nike; for TV, Apple, Nike, and Dell lead.Neil Saunders, Managing Director at Globaldata, noted, “Companies like Amazon properly monetize it on their Prime Video service with the X-ray feature which suggests products based on what characters are wearing, etc.”Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
