Shari Franke's memoir, The House of My Mother: A Daughter's Quest for Freedom, begins with a striking and unforgettable image: the moment police forced open the front door of her family's home with a battering ram. Shari, the eldest daughter of the once-popular family vloggers behind the 8 Passengers YouTube channel, captured the moment on her phone and shared it on Instagram, writing, “This moment, this climax of my family's descent into madness, needed to be documented, preserved, and shared on social media.” It was an act of reclamation—an attempt to wrest back control of her narrative from a life shaped by forced smiles and staged perfection. Today, with the release of her memoir through Gallery Books, Shari pulls back the curtain on the tabloid nightmare her family became. Ruby Franke, Shari's mother and the matriarch of the 8 Passengers channel, was arrested in 2023 along with her business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt. The two women were charged with multiple counts of aggravated child abuse after Shari's younger brother escaped from Hildebrandt's home and begged a neighbor for help. The boy, visibly malnourished and injured, revealed a harrowing story of being tied up with ropes and deprived of food. Inside Hildebrandt's home, police discovered Shari's younger sister in a similarly emaciated and injured state. The public's collective gasp over these revelations was only the beginning. In The House of My Mother, Shari details how the Franke family's carefully curated image of wholesomeness and faith unraveled behind the scenes, exposing the dark underbelly of a household where control, manipulation, and emotional abuse reigned. Before the arrests, the Frankes had amassed nearly 2.5 million subscribers on YouTube, drawn to their idyllic portrayal of life as a large Mormon family. But Shari's memoir reveals a far different reality. The transformation, she writes, began when Hildebrandt, a counselor with controversial methods, entered their lives. Hildebrandt's influence over Ruby grew rapidly, shifting the family dynamics in alarming ways. “She was our family's very own cult leader,” Shari writes. “She turned my mother into a fawning, starstruck acolyte who lapped up her every demented word like it was holy water.” Kevin Franke, Ruby's husband and Shari's father, was gradually pushed out of the household. According to Shari, Hildebrandt became the puppet master, dictating the family's every move under the guise of therapy and spiritual guidance. In a particularly disturbing episode, Hildebrandt took over Shari's bedroom, filling it with candles and massage oils. Shari's suspicions about a deeper relationship between her mother and Hildebrandt were confirmed one night when she saw Ruby sneaking out of her former room. “It was equal parts fascinating and horrific,” Shari recalls. “Two women who publicly condemned queerness in their ConneXions Classroom videos, while embodying it privately.” Hildebrandt's teachings, presented as strict moral guidelines, included extreme punishments and bizarre rituals. Shari writes that these teachings justified the alienation of Kevin, who was sent away to “work on his shortcomings” while the children's welfare deteriorated. The memoir's most heart-wrenching moments recount Shari's growing concern for her siblings. Isolated from her family while attending Brigham Young University, Shari made repeated calls to the Department of Child and Family Services, desperate to have someone intervene. But it wasn't until her brother's dramatic escape that authorities finally acted. Ruby and Hildebrandt's subsequent arrest and guilty pleas to four counts of aggravated child abuse brought an end to their reign of terror. Each woman was sentenced to four to thirty years in prison—a grim chapter in a story that continues to haunt the public consciousness. Shari, now 21, has emerged as an advocate against the exploitation of children in family vlogging. Her experiences growing up in front of a camera have shaped her into a vocal critic of the practice, which she believes inherently violates children's privacy and well-being. In her memoir and public statements, Shari argues there is no ethical way to monetize a child's life online. “Making money off your kids with no oversight as to how much the kids are getting paid—there's no way to do that well,” she asserts. Shari has taken her advocacy to the legislative level, supporting bills that protect underage influencers by guaranteeing them a share of their earnings. “It should be 100 percent,” she insists, though she adds that even financial compensation cannot undo the psychological damage inflicted by growing up with one's life broadcast to millions. The memoir also sheds light on Shari's personal struggles, from suicidal ideation to a damaging relationship with a married church elder. She writes candidly about feeling unloved as a child and grappling with the immense pressure to perform for the camera. Her journals and old family vlogs, which she reviewed while writing the book, offer a painful juxtaposition: moments of apparent happiness on screen contrasted with behind-the-scenes misery. “It felt like it wasn't my life,” Shari reflects. “The vlogs show smiling faces, but all I remember is the yelling between takes.” Shari's relationship with her father has begun to heal in the wake of the arrests. Kevin Franke, who describes his “invitation to leave” the family as “a hellish and abusive experience,” has acknowledged his role in the family's exploitation. Shari appreciates his willingness to take responsibility, even as she remains critical of his past inaction. Her relationship with Ruby, however, is irreparable. In a letter sent from prison, Ruby reminisced about Shari's childhood but failed to address the abuse. Shari's response was resolute: “I don't feel an emotional tie to her anymore.” With the release of The House of My Mother, Shari hopes to close a painful chapter of her life while advocating for change. She's on track to graduate from BYU with a degree in political science and plans to work in data analytics—far from the spotlight she once lived under. Her engagement, announced on Instagram, marks a new beginning. Yet, Shari's mission to protect children from the harms of family vlogging continues. “I hope that by sharing my story, other child influencers will see that their voices matter,” she writes. “And that it's worth whatever bridges they might burn.” Shari's memoir serves as both a personal catharsis and a rallying cry against a billion-dollar industry that thrives on the commodification of childhood. The question remains: will her story be the wake-up call needed to spark meaningful change, or will the cycle of exploitation continue? The public, it seems, is just beginning to reckon with the consequences of a life lived online. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Bay Area, 一度被称为 “the land of pimps and Panthers”. Bay Area hip-hop is “the product of pimps and hustlers just as much as activists and intellectuals”. Bay Area in the ‘80s1981 年第一张 Bay Area Rap record “Super Rat” by Motorcycle Mike ;奥克兰最有代表性和影响力的嘻哈音乐人 Too Short 从 1981 年开始就通过自制磁带在街头累积了信用和关注,他的前三次发行来自独立厂牌 75 Girls Records,1987 年的 “Born to Mack”开始由专业大厂牌发行,同时期成立了自己的 Dangerous Crew 和厂牌 Dangerous Music,音乐中的低音已经有了特点,这也是他将 pimp 作为自己代表形象的开始,在当时的嘻哈场景中十分稀有,1988 年 “Life Is … Too Short” 制作开始成熟;Bay Area 标志声音的标志制作人 Ant Banks,“肥”感的低音,Daft Punk 还表示受到了他的影响;*更正信息:Spice 1 的“Let it Be Known”官方发行时间为 1991 年。 ‘90s 的街头音乐 Mobb Music 和 P-Funk 传承Bay Area 地区突出低音的,与同时期 West Coast G-Funk 有区别的 Hip Hop 风格 Mobb Music;Too Short 我简直太喜欢了,在还没有 G-Funk 这个说法时(或没有形成一种普遍共识的风格),专辑 “Short Dog's In The House”(1990) 已经体现出由 P-Funk 继承而来的风格,并且十分清新,”Shorty The Pimp”(1992), “Get In Where You Fit In”(1993) 同样出色,我们都认为他的贡献是被低估的,并且 Too Short 还是最早以 Pimp 形象作为 rap persona 的老哥之一,这个形象持续而深入人心;关于 Pimp Culture 的 Newsletter 回顾: 关于皮条客文化的思考,以及 2024 年女性视角的补充成立于 1987 年的 Digital Underground 初始风格带有强烈的 Black Panther Party 政治意识,但核心人物 Shock G 认为当时已经有硬核的 N.W.A 和 Public Enemy 了,就将风格转换为更加幽默胡闹,诞生了 Humpty Hump 这个经典形象。 “Sex Packets”(1990) 是非常浓的 P-Funk 影响,"This Is an E.P. Release” (1991) 的 “Same Song”中正式介绍了家族成员——当时还是 Digital Underground 的 Rodie 的 2Pac. 还推荐 “Future Rhythm”(1996) 这张独立发行专辑(有两首歌出现在我们都很喜欢的喜剧电影 “Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood”), “The Lost Files”(1999) 合集, “Who Got the Gravy?”(1998);2Pac 早期还是个快乐 funky 小伙儿,我们都非常喜欢有 Digital Underground 参与的作品;1988 年来自 Vallejo 的 The Click 组合成立,E-40 与兄弟 D-Shot,妹妹 Suga T,表亲 B-Legit 一家子成员,在叔叔 Saint Charles 组织下首次亮相于 EP “The Kings Men” by M.V.P;90s 初开始, The Click 家族,尤其是 E-40 开始成为了 Bay Area 的独特声音之一,抽着说的 flow 对后来的 Bay Area 也有巨大影响,推荐专辑 “In a Major Way”(1995);凶狠且幽默的 Spice 1 从 1992 年的同名专辑开始,保持稳定输出,是一位写词技术高超的 rapper,90s 的作品都获得了高评价,推荐专辑 “197 He Wrote”(1993), 经典全谋杀题材,“Amerikkka's Nightmare”(1994), “1990-Sick”(1995);来自 San Francisco 的 RBL Posse 贡献了草药赞歌 “Don't Give Me No Bammer Weed” (1992 年的 “A Lesson To Be Learned”),RBL 组合有一段已经被遗忘的历史,关于成员之一 Mr.Cee 被残忍错杀的故事,在节目中没有提到,但非常推荐大家了解一下 “A History of RBL Posse with Black C: On Bammer, Mistaken Murders and Lessons Learned”组合 Luniz 第一张的大名曲 “I Got 5 On It”是 Mobb Music 的代表作,最好听的第二张 “Lunitik Muzik”(1997) 首首经典,不仅集结了湾区众多 rapper,与 8Ball & MJG 的合作也很出色,专辑中有当时南方地区的代表制作人 Mike Dean, N.O. Joe 参与制作;组合 3X Krazy 和成员之一 Keak da Sneak 从 90s 一直活跃到 00s Hyphy 时代,与南方制作人也有不少合作;我个人非常喜欢的 Rappin' 4-Tay 在当时的 Mobb 街头音乐场景中展示出稀有的真心内容,推荐专辑 “Don't Fight the Feelin'”(1994);‘90s 其他可以了解的 rapper: Mac Dre(1992 年在监禁时打电话录制的 “Back in da Hood”),Seagram(前三张都是在 Rap-a-lot 发行),Dru Down(皮条的另一代表人物),Mac Mall,Celly Cel,JT the Bigga Figga(Get Low Playaz 兄弟伙,太能出了),这个时期的 Mobb Music 街头场景产出众多,无法一一说道;被称为“The Black Panther of Hip Hop”的 Paris, 始终如一的黑豹子孙,在音乐中坚持表达抗争和强烈的黑人意识,对社会问题和政治进行激烈抨击,他也是一位伟大的制作人,作为导师为 The Conscious Daughters 监制制作,带出了她们成为了日后 Bay Area 女性的榜样;Episode playlist:Too Short - “Oakland”Sly & The Family Stone - “Family Affair”Tower of Power - “What is Hip?”Too Short - “The Ghetto”Too Short - “I'm A Player”2Pac & Digital Underground - “I Get Around”Digital Underground - “On One”E-40 & The Click - “Captain Save A Hoe”Spice 1 - “187 He Wrote”RBL Posse - “Don't Give Me No Bammer Weed”Luniz, 8 Ball&MJG 0 “In My Nature”3X Krazy - “Keep It On The Real”Rappin' 4-Tay - “I'll Be Around”Too $hort - “Never Talk Down “ft. Something has happened to Anna that has never happened to her while on the air. The only question is what to do about it… The Olympic closing ceremonies were great, but Anna and Raven were bothered by one particular part and they have some ideas on how to fix it… Now that the Olympics are done, Anna has realized that she learned three things from the Summer games! What are the signs hat you've walked into a bad restaurant? Chef Plum from the Food Network spoke to Anna and Raven about restaurant red flags! Do you ever get tired of your spouse asking you questions? Anna is sad the Olympics are over, but she is relieved to not have to answer her husband's constant questions about them! It was a busy closing weekend for the Olympics, but Anna still can't get over that one Australian athlete… Who's excited for new Disney movies! D23 was this weekend and it came packed with movie announcements that will get the whole family excited! Want to get caught up on what's happening at the Olympics? You could watch TV, sure, but it's more fun to listen to Jace, Anna and Raven's Kid Correspondent! Anna is dealing with some post-Olympic depression, so she commissioned AI to turn her feelings into a beautiful song! Marcus and Alana have a five-month-old baby girl. Marcus thinks that now she's consistently has a 7p-midnight sleep stretch, they can go next door to the neighbor's house on the weekends for drinks and dinner, they'll just bring the monitor to watch the baby. If the baby wakes up, they'll run home. Alana doesn't like this idea at all, she says the monitor is for IN THE HOUSE, they can't just leave their baby home along and go next door for wine. He says that he tested it and the monitor works perfectly fine, they're 100 feet away if that, it'll be okay. Would you? Dawn has got a shot at $300! All she has to do is beat Raven in pop culture trivia!

In The House on G Street: A Cuban Family Saga (NYU Press, 2023), award-winning author Lisandro Pérez tells Cuba's story through the lens of a single family: his own. His book relays the tales of two officers who fought against the Spanish for Cuban independence; a plantation owner who smuggles himself onto a ship; families divided by political loyalties; an orphaned boy from central Cuba who would go on to amass a fortune; a fatal love triangle; violence; and the ever-growing presence of the United States. It all culminates with an unforgettable portrait of a childhood spent in a world that was giving way to another one. The House on G Street is a unique depiction of one of the most consequential events of the twentieth century, told through generations of ancestors whose lives were shaped by dramatic historical forces. Pérez disentangles the complex history by following his family's thread, imbuing political events with personal meaning. Their story begins with emigration to Cuba and follows the waning years of the colony. The end of Spanish rule gives way to pervasive American influence, and Perez's family turned to New York as they adapted to the realities of a new republic with compromised sovereignty: privileged educations in boarding schools in Long Island and the Hudson Valley; a family business that took tobacco leaves from the soil of central Cuba to the docks of the East River; and grandparents who met and fell in love one night in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. His family learned to navigate the uneasy relationship between the United States and Cuba, a relationship that was destined to end in dramatic fashion. More than sixty years later, the Cuban Revolution resists receding into the past, sparking continued discussion, debate, and reinterpretation. There is a great deal that is known about the broad historical conditions that inexorably pushed Cuba towards revolution, but much less is known about the people who lived that dramatic history. It is a story that, if not recovered and told, will be lost, for Pérez's ancestors lived in a world that no longer exists, swept away by a tide of revolutionary change. The House on G Street follows a family whose lives mirror the history of a nation. The result is a compelling blend of memoir and in-depth historical research, a remarkable new view of the path to revolution as seen from the first person. Lisandro Pérez is Professor in the Department of Latin American and Latinx Studies at John Jay College, City University of New York and author of Sugar, Cigars, and Revolution: The Making of Cuban New York. He is also the founding director of the Cuban Research Institute at Florida International University. About Tami-Adrian George: Tami is the founder of Tami's Take On…Pilates. Rehab. Nutrition. It's Tami George's passion to help people do the things they love…better and without pain! Tami's many years as a dancer and busy working actor & model (Starship Troopers, In The House, General Hospital, 50+ National Commercials) meant she needed to be in peak physical condition.  Since her initial Pilates certification more than 30 years ago, she's had the opportunities to learn from Master Level Pilates Instructors, trained under top Physical Therapists, and incorporated my many fields of study to help her clients achieve their fitness goals.  She's worked with everyone from CEOs to nationally-competing athletes, from weekend warriors to fitness fraidy-cats, from little kids to grandparents.  Tami-Adrian says it's about so much more than dieting and exercises…It's about laughing, learning and celebrating!  Let's talk about taking back our fitness! What We Discuss in this Episode: We all have that voice in our heads that's chittering away non-stop. What is yours saying? Is it even your voice? And, if not, who let them in? After encountering so many clients who based their fitness & wellness goals on what other people had to say about them, she developed an easy to use system for filtering out all the “shoulds” and zeroing in on all the “Heck Yeahs!” Real fitness is not about what your weight.  Why in the world do we talk to ourselves in such damaging ways? Why can't people seem to stay motivated? We start off all gangbusters, then fizzle out. In all your years as a performer, what were you most surprised to find out about how your peers were staying camera ready? What's the difference between Body Positive and True Fitness? How does one set fitness goals they can actually reach? Today on the show we have returning champion RB Botto. For many, the holy grail of television has become Netflix. It's a titan in the industry, and with over 200 million subscribers worldwide, no one can put out content quite like them. Just look at the recent hit show BRIDGERTON, which has already been seen by a massive 80 million households (!!) since its release. If you're a writer or creator, getting your series onto Netflix's platform can spell success in a big way. But first there's the matter of getting your series in front of them and pitching it effectively. It should be a comfort to know that you're not the only one who wants your series on Netflix. Netflix wants that too! Netflix execs are constantly on the lookout for exciting new voices and new series to fill their slate. Yet it takes more than just a good series or a good pilot script to get on Netflix's radar; you need to be able to communicate it well and pitch it in a way that will get their team excited. This certainly takes some work, but it's absolutely achievable. If you're interested in getting your show on Netflix, it's time to learn directly from the source what it will take to make that happen. In an effort to reach more writers and find more content, Netflix has joined forces with Stage 32 to present a FREE and invaluable workshop on what it is that they're looking for in new shows and how you can best pitch your series to their executives. In Stage 32's continued effort to help level the playing field for content creators worldwide, we felt it's important that we help you get tools you need to be able to make sure that you can pitch effectively.Kicking off the workshop will be Stage 32 CEO, Richard "RB" Botto (@rbwalksintoabar), and hosting this presentation will be Stage 32's Managing Director Amanda Toney with Netflix's Director of Creative Talent Investment and Development for International Originals Christopher Mack. Christopher was previously Senior Vice President of Scripted Content for Stage 13, overseeing all of the brand's original scripted series and development slates across multiple genres, including Emmy nominated Netflix series' SPECIAL and IT'S BRUNO. Before Stage 13, Chris headed the Warner Bros. Workshop, the writing and directing program for professionals looking to start and/or further their careers in television. Over a period of 10 years in this role, Chris curated a roster of close to 100 writers and 50 directors representing the breakthrough emerging voices working on high-profile television shows today. In addition to these responsibilities, Chris has covered hit shows such as TWO AND A HALF MEN and SMALLVILLE for the Current Programs department.Prior to joining Warner Bros., Chris spent seven years writing on various one-hour dramas including ER, THE PRACTICE and THE NEW TWILIGHT ZONE. After graduating from Loyola Law School, Chris got his start in television at NBC Studios as an associate and he quickly rose to becoming an executive. During his time at the newly created NBC Studios, he oversaw a varied list of shows including: THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR and IN THE HOUSE, among others. In this exclusive Stage 32 workshop, Christopher will delve into what exactly makes a television pitch work at Netflix. He'll discuss the essentials you'll need to catch Netflix's eye and will zero in on how to write an effective pitch document. He'll pose questions you be able to answer and communicate for your series and give you ideas on how best to communicate your show's overview, world, tone, and characters. Christopher will then discuss how season summaries should be built and give you ideas on how to think about and present potential episodes. Finally, you will have the invaluable opportunity to ask Christopher your own questions. You will leave this presentation with the understanding of how to structure and present your series, not in theory, but directly from the source.Enjoy my epic conversation with RB Botto.
