Danny Robins introduces The Battersea Poltergeist. The true story of one of Britain's strangest hauntings, with Dafne Keen and Toby Jones.
Happy Spooky Wednesday, folks! Are you ready for a story that's sure to shiver your timbers? We hope so! Because Brittany is about to tell you all about the Battersea Poltergeist. In the 1950s, a family in Battersea, London began experiencing strange noises, flying objects, and unexplained fires. Yeah. That's right. More fires. This ghost (who the family named Donald) became BIG NEWS in the UK and was even discussed in Parliament. But was it real? Or the imaginings of a teenage girl? Considering this took away more than a decade of her life, we're tempted to believe her.
This week we are joined by parapsychologist and author Evelyn Hollow. She is a familiar voice to listeners of podcasts such as The Battersea Poltergeist, The Witch Farm and Uncanny, and is also the resident parapsychologist for the Uncanny TV show.Based on the hugely successful Scarred for Life books, this is a weekly exploration of the things that scared people growing up and what those things say about us today.Join Andy Bush and co-authors Stephen Brotherstone and Dave Lawrence as, each week, they talk to a special guest who brings with them three terrors from their childhoods.Follow us on socials:Andy Bush - Twitter / InstagramScarred For Life - Twitter / Facebook / InstagramProduction Company - Lock It In StudioProducer - Dane Smith Hosted on Acast. For this week's Haunting Season-themed Local Legends episode, Martin gathers round the Three Ravens campfire with writer, paranormal psychologist, and all-round super-cool spooky person Evelyn Hollow. It's likely you will have already heard of Evelyn, who is probably most famous for her work on Uncanny and various Danny Robins-hosted series such as The Battersea Poltergeist and The Witch Farm. You might have also seen her on the Warner Bros TV shows Spooked Scotland and Spooked Ireland which stream on Discovery Channel+. And there's perhaps a prevailing perception of her as "That Ghost Lady from The Programmes" but, as this interview goes to demonstrate, there's a heck of a lot more to Evelyn than such a persona might imply. She holds a Master of Research degree in Paranormal Psychology, is a former psychology lecturer, is tremendously nerdy about things you might not expect - not just maths but quantum physics, for example - and she has had a super-interesting career: In 2015 she was the recipient of the Lonely Planet Travel Writing Scholarship, she was a resident author at Esoterica for several years, the occult columnist for Corvid Culture, and has written numerous articles for Haunted magazine. She has taught writing classes at all sorts of places too, from universities to arts festivals, and her first book, The Atlas of Paranormal Places, was published in September. And the above is just the tip of the iceberg really. In fact, Evelyn's role on Uncanny, as the representative of 'Team Believer,' belies a wealth of hard work, rigorous research, and an awful lot of hard science. As such, settle in for a chat which folds in all sorts of fascinating concepts, from the history of Planck's Constant and the fiercely brilliant fiction of writers like Shirley Jackson to the awesomeness of dictionaries and the reality of what's actually involved in being a parapsychologist. Which, as Evelyn explains, is not what many people think it is...To learn more about Evelyn do visit her website at https://evelynhollow.com/, we hope you enjoy the episode, and we'll be back on Monday with our final trio of original ghost stories for Haunting Season 2024!The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Embark on a mesmerising exploration of the paranormal with Evelyn Hollow, a double Academy Award-winning Scottish writer and paranormal investigator. Join us as Hollow explores the supernatural world and the field of paranormal investigating. We take a look into the quantum physics of anomalous phenomena, as she bridges the scientific and the mystical, shedding light on what she believes are connections between the paranormal and the quantum world. Additionally, we unravel the mysteries behind Scotland's moniker as the City of the Dead, as Hollow unravels the cultural influences, geographical elements, and historical events that contribute to the nation's reputation as a paranormal hotspot. Brace yourself for a riveting journey through the unknown. My Special Guest Is Evelyn Hollow Evelyn Hollow is a double academy award winning Scottish writer and paranormal psychologist. She is a former psychology lecturer and holds a Master of Research degree in Paranormal Psychology. She now consults as a paranormal psychologist and expert for various TV shows and podcasts — most recently the smash-hit BBC shows The Battersea Poltergeist , The Witch Farm, and Uncanny. She is also from the Warner Bros. TV shows Spooked Scotland and Spooked Ireland, which stream on Discovery Channel+. Evelyn gives guest talks on paranormal history and the quantum physics of anomalous phenomena. Quantum Physics And Anomalous Phenomena Quantum physics is a branch of physics that studies the behaviour of matter and energy at the smallest scales, involving particles such as atoms and subatomic particles. Some speculate a connection between quantum physics and anomalous phenomena, suggesting that the nature of reality at the quantum level might influence or explain inexplicable occurrences. It introduces principles like superposition and entanglement, challenging classical notions. Superposition:In quantum mechanics, particles like electrons can exist in multiple states simultaneously, known as superposition. For example, an electron can exist in multiple positions or spin states at the same time until a measurement is made, collapsing the superposition to a single state. Some propose that superposition could have implications for unexplained phenomena, suggesting that certain events might involve simultaneous, coexisting states or possibilities. However, establishing a concrete link remains speculative. Entanglement: When two or more particles become entangled, the state of one particle instantaneously influences the state of the other, regardless of the distance between them. This phenomenon violates classical notions of locality and implies a form of instantaneous connection between entangled particles. The instantaneous correlation between entangled particles has sparked speculation about potential connections to phenomena like telepathy or extrasensory perception. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Explore why Scotland is considered a paranormal hotspot. 2. Explore the possible connections between consciousness, quantum physics and anomalous phenomena. Before January 1956, the daily lives of the Hitchings family would have struggled to have been considered remarkable. That year would mark the beginning of one of the most perplexing paranormal cases in London's history. It would seemingly begin with the discovery of a mysterious key. The father of the family, Wally Hitchings, would try the key in every lock in their terraced house on Wycliffe Road. The key didn't fit any of the doors or cabinets but, unbeknownst to the Hitchings family, it may have been what unlocked the flood of supernatural events that would plague their home for years to come. The ghostly activity that would follow, centered around the 15 year old daughter, Shirley. A mischievous spirit would come to reside within the HItchings family home and, as some paranormal researchers have concluded, used Shirley as a conduit to communicate with the living.
