For decades, Michigan State University has been working with partners in Detroit to support the city's economic development, advance the arts, transform schools, improve health and protect the environment. And, after a successful and illuminating trip with visits along the western Lower Peninsula of Michigan in the fall of 2024, this May, the Spartan Bus Tour headed to Detroit.Just as the inaugural Spartan Bus Tour demonstrated how Spartans are making a difference across the state, a tour of metro Detroit illustrated how the partnerships between the city and Michigan State are changing our state for the better.Taking place May 5 and 6 with stops at 12 locations in the Detroit area, the tour was led by MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz, and included a delegation of 50 faculty and administrators who explored the breadth and depth of the university's research, outreach and education impact in a city that, like MSU, values resilience, hard work and a commitment to solving problems and empowering people for better lives.Conversation Highlights:(1:20) - President Guskiewicz sets the scene. (2:00) - The Zekelman Holocaust Center opened its doors in 1984 in West Bloomfield and relocated to the current Farmington Hills location in 2004. It was the first stop on the tour. The center is home to the Holocaust Museum exhibit and an extensive research library, archives and special exhibit galleries. Each year, more than 150,000 people visit the center, whose mission is to engage, educate and empower by remembering the Holocaust. Eli Mayerfeld is CEO of the Holocaust Museum.(6:35) - The second stop on Day 1 was at the Detroit Partnership for Food, Learning and Innovation, or DPFLI: The DPFLI was founded in 2017 and is MSU's first urban agriculture center. Housed within MSU Extension, the partnership in northwest Detroit focuses on research and education to improve the lives of Detroiters and serves as a community space for residents. Naim Edwards directs DPFLI, George Smith directs MSU AgBioResearch and Dave Ivan directs the Community Food and Environment Institute.(16:07) - The third stop on Day 1 was at The Shepherd and LANTERN, which are part of Library Street Collective's ongoing artistic commitment to Detroit's Little Village neighborhood. It's Monday, September 23rd, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Indonesian church denied building permit for 10 years For 10 long years now, the 600 members of Christ Congregation Millenium Peace Church have gathered on an empty plot of land in the Kartasura District in Indonesia to worship God. They set up a large tent to shield themselves from the scorching sun and lay mats down on the ground. The Muslim-majority Indonesian government refuses to grant their request for a building permit to construct their desperately needed church building, reports International Christian Concern. Pastor Ari Suksmono said the congregation purchased land 11 years ago and requested the permit the following year. Despite the man-made obstacles, these believers recognize the truth of Psalm 96:4 which says, “For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods.” Please pray that the Indonesian government would grant their request to build the sanctuary for Christ Congregation Millenium Peace Church. Oprah Winfrey interviews Kamala Harris in campaign “infomercial” Last Thursday, in a Town Hall meeting called Unite for America that felt more like a Democratic infomercial, Oprah Winfrey interviewed Kamala Harris in Farmington Hills, Michigan, reported the New York Post. Early on, an audience member asked about the open border. AUDIENCE MEMBER #1: “What would be specific steps to strengthening the border?” HARRIS: “So, it's a wonderful and important question. You know, my background was as a prosecutor, and I was also the elected Attorney General for two terms of a border state. So, this is not a theoretical issue for me. This is something I've actually worked on.” AUDIENCE MEMBER #1: “Right.” HARRIS: “I have prosecuted transnational criminal organizations for the trafficking of guns, drugs and human beings, I take very seriously the importance of having a secure border and ensuring the safety of the American people.” Oddly enough, Kamala failed to talk about what she has done for the last three and a half years as Vice President and Biden's Border Czar. According to the American Federation for Immigration Reform, the total number of illegal aliens encountered since Fiscal Year 2020 now stands at over 9.4 million. There are at least 16.8 million illegal aliens in the United States, as of the beginning of 2023, which has led to a skyrocketing rise in fentanyl deaths and illegal violent crime. Kamala Harris sidesteps question on bad economy Another audience member asked Kamala Harris about the economy. AUDIENCE MEMBER #2: “We are, like many young Americans, experiencing a very high cost of living. …Our mortgage is incredibly higher than what we thought it would be. We really would love to know what your plan is to help lower the cost of living.” HARRIS: “Yours is a story I hear around the country as I travel in terms of both rightly having the right to have aspirations and dreams and ambitions for your family and working hard and finding that the American Dream, for this generation and so many recently, far more elusive than it's been. And we need to deal with that, and there are a number of ways. One is bringing down the cost of everyday necessities, including groceries.” Under Kamala Harris, who has been Vice President for the last three and a half years, grocery prices are up 25% and inflation is up 17%. Forget about what her plan is for the next four years, she didn't do it in the last four years. Kamala Harris in trouble with staff over saying she would use gun On guns, Kamala surprised Oprah. HARRIS: “I'm a gun owner. Tim Walz is a gun owner.” WINFREY: “I did not know that.” HARRIS: “If they break in my house, they're probably going to get shot.” WINFREY: “Yes, yes. I hear that. I hear that.” HARRIS: “Sorry. Probably should not have said that. (laughs) but my staff will deal with that later.” (laughs) Most Americans believe we have the right to defend ourselves and our property. Why would she be in trouble with her staff? Because Kamala Harris has advocated for gun-grabbing policies that violate the Second Amendment. Kamala claims Founding Fathers driven by abortion and gay marriage And, at the very end of the 90-minute infomercial for Kamala, Oprah asked this. WINFREY: “What is on your heart to say to the American people, as we have 47 days until November 5? What's on your heart to say to particularly those people who are still undecided or maybe indifferent or on the fence still?” HARRIS: “I love our country. I know we all do. That's why everybody's here right now. We love our country. We take pride in the privilege of being America. This is a moment where we can and must come together as Americans, understanding we have so much more in common than what separates us. Let's come together with the character that we are so proud of about who we are, which is we are an optimistic people. “Americans, by character, are people who have dreams and ambitions and aspirations. We believe in what is possible. We believe in what can be, and we believe in fighting for that. “That's how we came into being, because the people before us understood that one of the greatest expressions of patriotism is to fight for the ideals of who we are, which includes freedom to make decisions about your own body, freedom to be safe from gun violence, freedom to have access to the ballot box, freedom to be who you are and to love who you love openly and with pride, freedom to just be you.” WINFREY: “mmm” Matt Walsh: Kamala Harris is "nonsensical and evil!" Christian commentator Matt Walsh offered this analysis. WALSH: “It's nonsensical and vapid and quite verbose in the emptiest and most shallow way possible. But at the core of it, to the extent that she's saying anything at all, what she's saying is also twisted and evil. “Because the only parts that were intelligible were the parts where she says that America is built on abortion, gay marriage and gun confiscation -- the three things that the founders of our country either specifically repudiated, in the case of gun confiscation, or, in the case of the other two, never repudiated because they were so unthinkable in those days they didn't need to be addressed. And certainly three things that are not rights enumerated in the Constitution, and yet these are the rights, the ‘freedoms,' that Kamala Harris says the entire country is built on. “Nonsensical and evil!” Reformed pastor Steve Lawson resigns over sin And finally, a Texas pastor known for his fiery preaching and frequent appearances alongside John MacArthur has been removed from ministry after an alleged "inappropriate relationship" with an unidentified woman, reports The Christian Post. Steve Lawson, the 73-year-old lead preacher at Trinity Bible Church of Dallas and a prominent figure in the Reformed/Calvinist Evangelicalism movement, informed the church's elders about the relationship, according to a statement released by the church. Lawson, who holds a masters of theology from Dallas Theological Seminary and a doctorate from Reformed Theological Seminary, will no longer be compensated by Trinity Bible Church of Dallas. The statement said, "Steve has confessed and regrets the damage he has caused to his family, the church, the reputation of OnePassion Ministries and most of all Jesus Christ. We are saddened for the glory of Christ in this matter.” He formerly served as a teaching fellow at Ligonier Ministries and as the dean of Doctor of Ministry Studies at The Master's Seminary but has since been removed from both websites. He wrote 36 books including The Unwavering Resolve of Jonathan Edwards and The Expository Genius of John Calvin. 1 Peter 5:8 warns, "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary, the Devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, September 23rd, in the year of our Lord 2024. Archbishop Vigneron joins cohost Mike Chamberland and special guest Kim Kerwin, theology teacher at St. Fabian Catholic School in Farmington Hills, to discuss the recent National Eucharistic Congress and ongoing National Eucharistic Revival. (0:21) Host Mike Chamberland greets Archbishop Vigneron and introduces our special guest for this episode, Kim Kerwin. Kim introduces herself and then Archbishop Vigneron shares a bit about his summer thus far. (3:04) Mike introduces the topic of the episode, the National Eucharistic Congress that took place July 17-21 in Indianapolis. Both Archbishop Vigneron and Kim attended. Archbishop Vigneron spends some time reviewing the purpose of the Congress and corresponding National Eucharistic Revival. (7:21) Kim shares about a powerful experience during the Congress of being at Eucharistic adoration with 50,000 people in reverent silence. Archbishop Vigneron notes that one grace of the Congress has been the “profound sense…that the church is alive in the United States.” They then share their personal highlights of attending the Congress, including a special Mass for pilgrims from the Archdiocese of Detroit and the conversations over meals with pilgrims from all over the country. (21:23) Archbishop Vigneron and Kim share how the Congress has inspired them in their ministry. This sparks a discussion on the nature of our relationship with the Eucharist: We not only receive this gift, but we also make a reciprocal offering of ourselves. Kim talks about the impact of sharing powerful witnesses of the Eucharist with her students. (32:07) Kim talks about the pleasant surprise of being quite disconnected from the world outside the Congress, even though the event took place in the middle of a major city. Archbishop Vigneron admits he did not expect to see such an emphasis on—and joy surrounding—the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the Congress. (35:57) The group discusses what happens next, now that the Congress has concluded. There is already talk about future Congresses, but Archbishop Vigneron highlights the more immediate commission to take the fruits of the Congress home to our parishes, families, and next-door neighbors. They offer some final thoughts about the blessings of technology, which had made the Congress available to all via videos and other resources online, and communion with thousands of attendees, which Archbishop Vigneron calls a “foretaste” of being at the eternal banquet one day in heaven. (39:14) Archbishop Vigneron answers listener questions about whether he ever imagined he'd become a bishop, where he likes to go on vacation, and his family's support of his life of faith and priestly vocation. He concludes the episode with a prayer and blessing.

In a world filled with hustle and bustle, two cloistered nuns pull back the curtain on their life of prayer, silence and peace(0:01) Mother Mary Therese of the Holy Spirit, prioress of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns of the Monastery of St. Therese in Clinton Township, recalls her first memories of cloistered life as a 7-year-old visiting a family friend who was a Carmelite nun, and how an early whimsical experience shaped what would become a lifelong vocation.(4:34) Mother Mary Therese talks about her certainty, as a young girl, that she wanted to be a “Carmelite” — not necessarily a nun — and how her understanding of the vocation grew as she did. After high school, she joined the cloistered order and found her “forever home”: a 12-acre, picturesque monastery she now calls “heaven on earth.”(8:06) Mother Mary Therese describes the rhythm of life and patterns of prayer, work, rest and recreation inside the cloistered monastery. She talks about the challenges the nuns face in supporting themselves, and how they seek to keep their primary task — intercessory prayer — at the forefront of their minds.(13:05) We meet another cloistered nun, Sr. Dominic Maria of St. Michael, the 37-year-old vocations director for the Cloistered Dominican Nuns of the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament in Farmington Hills, the largest cloistered community in the Archdiocese of Detroit. As a rare younger vocation, Sr. Dominic discusses her path to cloistered life and how some people “are astonished” at the sight of a young cloistered nun.(15:04) Sr. Dominic and Mother Mary Therese each discuss the misconceptions surrounding modern cloistered life — namely, that it is a drab, isolated life devoid of vibrancy and fun. Both nuns insist nothing could be further from the truth.(18:46) While silence is essential to the nuns' prayer — and something the modern, technology-soaked world sorely lacks — Mother Mary Therese says cloistered life is also an active one filled with work, laughter, joy, reading, hobbies, games and celebration.(24:21) Mother Mary Therese and Sr. Dominic talk about why prayer is so central to the nuns' vocation, and how cloistered life is a special response to God's invitation to be close to Him in all things, as radical as it is countercultural. And both say they couldn't imagine life any other way.Reporting by Gabriella Patti; script and narration by Casey McCorry; production by Ron PangbornLourdes Senior Community, sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of Peace and established on the timeless principles of the Gospel of Jesus, encompasses 35 acres of serene lakefront property, offering a broad continuum of care for seniors and their families. Rather than hastily attributing her demise to a mere accidental fall from a window, law enforcement authorities refrained from jumping to conclusions. Within the confines of the house, Nada's three children stood as the sole witnesses to the incident. Thankfully, the residence boasted an impressive network of 13 security cameras, which ultimately provided the vital lead necessary for the police to uncover the truth.

Katie speaks with Rene Lichtman, born 1937, who is a “hidden child” Holocaust survivor who opposes the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza. Then Katie is joined by Layla Saliba & Aidan Parisi to get the latest updates on Columbia University's handling of a recent chemical attack on Pro-Palestinian student activists, censorship on campus, and more. The son of two Polish Jews who fled to France during the 1930s, Rene Lichtman was hidden at the age of two with a Catholic family outside of Paris after his father was killed during the 1940 Nazi invasion and his mother was forced into hiding. After the war, Rene moved with his mother to Brooklyn, New York. He was politically radicalized in the 1960s and became an active opponent of the Vietnam War. Rene was a founding member of the World Federation of Jewish Child Survivors of the Holocaust. On December 22, 2023, Rene took part in a demonstration outside of the Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan, against the US-backed Israeli massacres in Gaza. Aidan Parisi is a queer, non-binary MSW student at Columbia University. A Washington DC native, social justice has always been embedded in their life. They grew up in a household with two strong parents who imbued upon them the principles of challenging the status quo that perpetuates the subversion of marginalized communities. As an activist, Aidan has been involved in a number of social justice causes that include uplifting the rights of those who are queer/trans, immigrants, low-income, and marginally housed. Currently, Aidan is being targeted for their fierce stance against genocide and forced displacement. Layla Saliba (she/her) is a Palestinian American graduate student at Columbia University. She is studying social work with a concentration in policy practice. She is passionate about disability justice and wants to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for everyone.
