What does it mean to live life in rhythm? Rhythm is something that is all around us, it's in seasons of the year, heartbeats of our bodies, modulations of our speech, it's even in our breath. In today's episode we get together with Jorge Ochoa to talk about his work as an Occupational Therapist and musician and how he has been able to combine them by establishing TamboRhythms. Jorge recounts the many ways that drumming benefits young children, from having a positive effect on one's mood to teaching social-emotional skills like sharing, impulse control, and improving attention span. He also shares deeply affecting stories of children with special needs responding to the drumming practice in surprising and beautiful ways. Jorge talks about the connective power of drumming and how it can help adults in a myriad of ways, from easing symptoms of depression and anxiety to supporting the emotional health of cancer patients. In this episode, Jorge shares his perspective and experience of going through a divorce and blending two families. He reveals to us his journey in love, relationships, and spirituality. I once opened up to Jorge about a complicated relationship I was going through. He gave me an interesting perspective on what to understand and how to think about that relationship. I'm glad he's here today to share his wisdom about the dynamics of relationships and how to honor each other in a respectful, cherishing way that equally builds each other up. Jorge makes a comment about love that is truly intriguing and how one becomes “lovely” when they're in love, which leads to showing your best self to the world and being adored in the eyes of our partners. https://www.storkdpodcast.com/season2 In This Episode:  [ 2:07 ] Jorge's introduction to his life and family [ 4:52 ] Integrating his children with his second marriage [ 7:09 ] The guilt Jorge felt blending his families [ 12:01 ] How Jorge acted in his relationship during his youth [ 15:51 ] The dynamics of giving and receiving in relationships [ 21:29 ] How Jorge wants to receive love from his partner to feel like a King while treating his woman as a Queen [ 25:22 ] Did Jorge change his dynamics to approach his second marriage differently? [ 29:50 ] What Jorge's blended family life looks like now [ 34:10 ] Jorge opened up capacity for love by moving his thoughts from his head to his heart [ 35:28 ] The advice Jorge wants others to know who are blending families [ 43:13 ] How Jorge defines family for himself Takeaways:  Finding ways in a relationship to treat each other like a King and a Queen and honoring those roles in the relationship The pain of being in a relationship where you are being treated like a thing that is there to only provide, rather than a loving partner Feeling resentment after ending a toxic relationship and finding a new relationship where you feel love for the first time Maneuvering the tough dynamics of blending families Jorge had feelings of guilt when integrating a new family together because he could not save his previous marriage. Spoiling a partner in a relationship and asking for nothing in return can lead to feelings of entitlement from one partner and worthlessness in another. It is essential for partners to show up on equal terms in order to satisfy each other's wants and needs in a healthy, balanced, reciprocal manner. When you think of Steelcase, their office furniture probably comes to mind. However, Steelcase is much more than just a manufacturer of office equipment. They enable their customers (workplace/workspace designers) to help those designers’ clients create useful, effective, workplaces and offices that are also safe and compliant. Jorge Lozano is a data science manager at Steelcase and recently participated as a practitioner and guest on an IIA webinar I gave about product design and management being the missing links in many data science and analytics initiatives. I was curious to dig deeper with Jorge about how Steelcase is enabling its customers to adjust workspaces to account for public health guidelines around COVID-19 and employees returning to their physical offices. The data science team was trying to make it easy for its design customers to understand health guidelines around seat density, employee proximity and other relevant metrics so that any workspace designs  could be “checked” against public health guidelines. Figuring out the what, when, and how to present these health guidelines in a digital experience was a journey that Jorge was willing to share. We covered: Why the company was struggling to understand how their [office] products came together, and how the data science group tried to help answer this. The digital experience Steelcase is working on to re-shape offices for safe post-pandemic use. How Steelcase is evaluating whether their health and safety recommendations were in fact safe, and making a difference. How Jorge’s team transitioned from delivering “static data science” outputs into providing an enabling capability to the business. What Steelcase did to help dealer designers when engaging with customers, in order to help them explain the health risks associated with their current office layouts and plans. What it was like for Jorge’s team to work with a product manager and UX designer, and how it improved the process  of making the workspace health guidelines useful. Resources and Links: Steelcase: https://www.steelcase.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jorge-lozano-flores/ Quotes from Today’s Episode “We really pride ourselves in research-based design” - Jorge “This [source data from design software] really enabled us to make very specific metrics to understand the current state of the North American office.” - Jorge “Using the data that we collected, we came up with samples of workstations that are representative of what our customers are more likely to have. We retrofitted them, and then we put the retrofitted desk in the lab that basically simulates the sneeze of a person, or somebody coughing, or somebody kind of spitting a little bit while they're talking, and all of that. And we're collecting some really amazing insights that can quantify the extent to which certain retrofits work in disease transmission.” - Jorge “I think one of the challenges is that, especially when you're dealing with a software design solution that involves probabilities, someone has to be the line-drawer.” - Brian “The challenge right now is how to set up a system where we can swarm at things faster, where we're more efficient at understanding the needs and [are able to get] it in the hands of the right people to make those important decisions fast? It's all pointing towards data science as an enabling capability. It's a team sport.” - Jorge Transcript Brian: Welcome back everyone to Experiencing Data. This i

He was on the show “90 Day Fiancé,” where he met a girl from Russia who changed completely when she arrived in the states. He’s a grower of marijuana here in California, where it’s legal, but had trouble getting his crops to grow fast enough to meet the demands of his new fiance’s financial needs. He decided to buy marijuana from another state where it was legal and transport it across the country, passing through one state where it was not legal. As you may have guessed, he got pulled over in that state with over 300 pounds of marijuana. His story is a redemption story: He goes to jail, picks up a Tony Robbins book, and he systematically decides to go through the journey of self-exploration, loses 125 pounds, and finds out who he is at a deep level.
