More than a year in the making, this episode follows Courtnee Bertucci across three check-ins throughout her first year as a new graduate Occupational Therapist. Instead of a single retrospective reflection, we captured her experience in real time — documenting the emotional shifts, clinical growth, and evolving professional identity as it unfolded. Together, we unpack confidence, imposter syndrome, uncertainty, and the slow building of competence that shapes year one. This week on the Live to Walk Again Podcast we had the pleasure of speaking with Emily Abraham who is an Occupational Therapist, Spinal Cord Injury Advocate, and the partner of Kyle McKittrick. Emily joined us on the show after the tragic passing of Kyle in December after checking himself into the hospital with an unknown issue causing extreme autonomic dysreflexia (AD) that eventually caused an inoperable brain bleed. Emily gave some great information and things for any person dealing with an SCI to watch out for if you're hospitalized, especially surrounding AD as many nurses and doctors are not familiar with this serious condition that can arise at a moments notice for any injury T6 or higher. Kyle was a major voice and inspiration in the spinal cord injury community after suffering a C6/7 SCI in 2018, he played wheelchair rugby with the Las Vegas Highrollers, and truly lived life to the fullest. On today's podcast I chatted with Occupational Therapist, Nerella Chauvin who lives just outside Budapest in Hungary with her family. This busy career professional who was running her own successful practice turned 50 last summer and suddenly her life was turned upside down. She lay on the bed with a cup of coffee and started checking some emails - when she woke after what felt like a nap, she had a concerned audience at the foot of her bed. She had a seizure and had just come around. Tests diagnosed that not only did she have Epilepsy but she also had a condition called Organic Amnestic Syndrome, which causes memory loss. This occupational therapist who had specialised in helping people with epilepsy was now suddenly the patient who could no longer work or drive and the simplest of life tasks carried many practical risks. While the doctors are still experimenting with drugs to stabilise her condition Nerella has had to learn how to live again and she does this through a new lens; "Happiness is Waking up" she says. In this episode of Talking Away the Taboo, Dr. Baron is joined by Hadassah Eventsur, an occupational therapist and life coach, for a deeply needed conversation about neurodiversity in Jewish life, and how that contributes to a smaller family size. Hadassah reached out to name something many women feel but struggle to articulate: the pain of wanting a large family while knowing that undiagnosed ADHD or other neurodivergent traits make the day-to-day demands of parenting feel overwhelming or unsustainable. Dr. Baron names this experience as circumstantial infertility, where the barrier to growing a family isn't medical, but rooted in capacity, support, and how the world is built. Hadassah shares her own journey of recognizing her neurodivergence, the coping strategies she developed long before she had language for them, and the shame that so often accompanies doing things "differently." From challah baking to daily routines, she explains how COVID became a turning point in understanding her brain with more compassion. Together, they explore: Why neurodivergent women often feel unseen and unsupported How communal expectations around motherhood can deepen shame The difference between desire and capacity, and why both matter Practical, realistic tools for executive functioning and emotional regulation The power of community over advice, fixes, or judgment This conversation is for anyone who has ever thought, "I want more, but I don't know how I'd survive it," and felt alone in that tension. It's an invitation to widen how we define infertility, support, and what it means to make thoughtful, loving decisions without shame. ACT for Occupational Therapists: Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in Any OT Setting Have you ever worked with clients who seem stuck? The ones who don't follow through on goals they set themselves, the ones often labeled with judgy terms like "non-compliant" or "unmotivated"? As occupational therapists, we're often called in when all else has failed. But when psychosocial barriers keep people from engaging in meaningful occupations, we need tools that work with the internal experiences creating those obstacles. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) offers occupational therapists a powerful, trauma-informed framework for helping clients unhook from difficult thoughts, feelings, and sensations so they can move toward the occupations that matter to them. Whether you practice in physical rehab, pediatrics, mental health, persistent pain, or community settings, ACT can integrate into your OT approach. In This Episode, I Discuss: - The experience of clients being "hooked" and moving away from meaningful occupations despite having goals they care about - The ACT choice point model: toward moves versus away moves and what that means for occupational engagement - How the six core processes of ACT break down into mindfulness-based tools and values-based action (aka meaningful occupation) - The four ACT processes that help clients be more flexibly responsive to difficult internal experiences - Why ACT feels aligned with trauma-informed, humanistic, collaborative approaches to occupational therapy practice - How "open up, be present, do what matters" translates to occupational therapy - Practical ways ACT fits into OT sessions across different practice settings About My Practical ACT for OTs Course The Practical ACT for OTs Course is clinical education designed specifically for occupational therapists who want to integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy into their practice. It is a psychosocial skill for any area of practice. The course includes: Eight asynchronous video modules (approximately 4.5 hours of content with limitless access) Optional live group calls twice a month to discuss clinical applications and nuance Online community of OT peers learning and applying ACT Resource library with tools you can use immediately in practice Support for applying ACT across all OT settings More than 150 occupational therapists have taken this course, and it's designed to help you add ACT tools to your clinical toolkit without feeling overwhelmed. Welcome to Season 8 of Sense by Meg Faure! In this powerful solo episode, Meg takes us back to the very beginning: the moment of birth. She explains the profound "sensory explosion" a newborn experiences as they transition from the calm, muted womb into our bright, loud, and unpredictable world. Understanding this is the key to a calmer, more confident start to your parenting journey.Key discussion points include:The Newborn's Reality: What does birth really feel like for a baby? We explore the overwhelming sensory input they face.Your Baby's 8 Senses: An introduction to all eight sensory systems, from touch and sight to the lesser-known vestibular, proprioceptive, and interoceptive senses. The Science of "Habituation": Learn why your baby startles easily and gets overwhelmed, and why their brain can't yet filter out unimportant information like an adult's can.Your Role as a Sensory Filter: Discover how you can act as your baby's external regulator, using simple techniques to create a calming environment.Secrets from the Womb: Meg explains why swaddling, white noise, rocking, and dim lights work so well—because they replicate the soothing sensory sanctuary of the womb. This episode is a foundational guide for any expectant or new parent, providing the "why" behind your newborn's behavior and the practical tools to help them settle into our world with sense and connection.Take the guesswork out of parenting with Meg's expert-led routines.

In this episode, Hallie Bulkin speaks with Dr. Alyssa Welch about the vital role of interprofessional collaboration in achieving optimal patient outcomes, particularly for speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Dr. Welch emphasizes that working alongside occupational therapists (OTs), physical therapists (PTs), dentists, and other specialists is not just beneficial—it is now a core competency in modern healthcare.Dr. Welch and Hallie discuss the necessity of recognizing the limits of your own expertise and knowing when to make a referral. Collaboration ensures a whole-person therapeutic approach and prevents the professional burnout that comes from trying to "fix everything" in isolation. They cover key areas where SLPs and other therapists must coordinate care, such as feeding mechanics, positioning for speech, and addressing core stability and motor skills. In this episode, you'll learn:✔️ ️ Interprofessional collaboration is essential for SLPs, leading to better patient outcomes and reduced medical errors.✔️ Collaboration often involves partnering with Occupational Therapists (OTs) for fine motor skills, positioning, and feeding mechanics, and Physical Therapists (PTs) for gross motor skills, body positioning, and trunk control.✔️ Collaboration shifts the focus from checking off individual treatment boxes to a patient-centered approach that meets the family's actual needs.✔️ Poor communication is responsible for an estimated 70-80% of serious medical errors; collaboration significantly reduces this risk.✔️ Recognizing the limits of your own scope and knowing when to refer is crucial for long-term career sustainability and preventing professional burnout.✔️ Clinical collaboration can take many forms, including email consultations, case conferences, co-treatment sessions, and shared documentation.RELATED EPISODES YOU MIGHT LOVEEpisode 234: The Role of Occupational Therapists in TOTs Care with Anna Dearman MBA, MOT, LOTR, CLCEp 332: The Interconnectedness of Oral and Systemic Health with Amber White RDH, HHPOTHER WAYS TO CONNECT & LEARN

In an era where the global population is aging faster than ever—projected to have more people over 65 than under 18 within the next decade—staying in your own home shouldn't feel like an impossible dream. Yet for many, the transition from independent living to "aging in place" is fraught with hidden costs, safety pitfalls, and unspoken taboos. Enter Carol Chiang, an occupational therapist with 27 years of experience, mostly in home care, who has distilled her frontline wisdom into a practical guide: Age in Place or Find a New Space. In a recent lively discussion hosted by senior living advocate Steve (the transcript of which forms the backbone of this article), Chiang unpacked the book's core message: Aging well at home isn't about grand overhauls or pricey gadgets—it's about mindset shifts, early planning, and designs that work for everyone. From debunking myths about stair glides to championing "universal design," Chiang's insights empower families to turn homes into havens of independence. As she puts it, "The choices you make today are the consequences you're going to reap tomorrow. It's a gift to your future self."Watch the full discussion, chat and resources https://www.retirementlivingsourcebook.com/videos/age-in-place-or-find-a-new-space-occupational-therapist-carol-chiang-shares-secrets-from-her-new-book

Leah and Dr. Shelly, both occupational therapists who have either earned or are working toward dual certification as BCBAs, join me to talk about the power and challenges of blending these two worlds. Believe it or not, there aren't even statistics on how many dual-certified professionals are out there—but the impact of this crossover is clear. Their work centers on collaboration with families and other professionals, finding common ground between OT and ABA.We talk about the funding and system barriers that can make integration tough, and how learning to understand each other's “jargon” helps break those walls down. As Dr. Shelly says, OTs and BCBAs are often working toward the same goals—they just use different words. Sometimes, you have to “massage the message” so everyone can connect and understand.Dr. Shelly also shares insight into the business and insurance side of implementation, while Leah highlights the importance of spreading the word about the tools ABA offers. Their message is simple: put the egos aside, keep listening, and stay open to learning from each other.#autism #speechtherapyWhat's Inside:The growing overlap between OT and ABAWhy collaboration starts with learning each other's “language”Navigating funding and system barriers that limit integrationPutting egos aside to focus on shared goals and learning from one anotherMentioned In This Episode:Is This My Child?: Sensory Integration SimplifiedCircle Care ServicesThe Autism Roundtable Podcast - Circle Care ServicesMy BCBA Life Podcast - Circle Care Services Join the ABA Speech Connection ABA Speech: HomeRecoverycast: Mental Health & Addiction Recovery StoriesReal talk, real recovery, actually entertaining.
