In this episode of What's Best For The Patient Is Best For Business, Jerry is joined by executive coach Steve Allred for a thought-provoking discussion on why understanding your healthcare practice's current operations is the key to navigating—and thriving in—a rapidly changing industry.Six months after their last conversation, Jerry and Steve revisit the critical need for practice owners to optimize their businesses before adding new revenue streams, technology, or expansion strategies. From financial literacy to efficient systems and leadership delegation, they break down the foundational elements that allow clinic owners to adapt to industry shifts—whether it's value-based care, direct-to-employer models, or AI integration.Key Takeaways:• Master Your Metrics: If you don't understand your financials, workflows, and key performance indicators, you're unprepared for change—and risk being left behind.• Systems Over Hustle: You can't scale or innovate if you're bogged down by day-to-day operations. Build systems that free up your time to lead and strategize.• Adapt or Get Replaced: Complaining about insurers, regulations, or competitors won't move the needle. The future belongs to those who leverage technology, data, and new care models proactively.• Opportunity in Disruption: From hybrid care to primary care PT, those who embrace change (instead of resisting it) will find untapped revenue and impact.Steve also shares a free financial tool to help practice owners model the true cost and ROI of hiring a new clinician—because decisions should be driven by data, not fear.Whether you're a solo practitioner or a multi-clinic owner, this episode is a wake-up call: Get your house in order now, or risk being outpaced by those who do.Check out Steve's customizable financial model at this link: https://subscribepage.io/9jHCI8Website: practicefreedomu.comEmail: steve@practicefreedomu.com If you'd like to learn more about Strata EMR & RCM and achieving a 99.99% reimbursement rate for your PT, OT, or SLP Clinic head over to stratapt.com and book a demo with their team!

I have been an Occupational Therapist since 1991. I started out working in neuro rehab - brain injury rehabilitation, and loved it. I've always been a person who is constantly seeking out more education, especially when you find that you aren't able to help people enough, with what you know. So I studied and became certified in NDT, or Neuro Developmental Treatment early in my career. As I moved into other areas of rehab, I took trainings in Myofascial Release, Hand Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, and Manual Lymph Drainage. I kept looking for “that thing” that resonated with me. While I learned a lot with these courses and they brought more understanding and different techniques to use, none of them were “it” for me. And they didn't teach people how to help themselves. It was another technique to do “to” them. I have owned my own business, Atha SomaYoga, since 2017, and have an office inside Core Physical Therapy in West Des Moines. I offer mainly private sessions focusing on helping people become aware of their basic resting breath and posture, and imbalances they may have, then help them retrain them through the work of Buteyko Breath Re-education and Somatics. Then I help them retrain their functional movement, with additional tools from yoga, including the poses, philosophy, and Ayurveda (the sister science to yoga) so they can keep themselves moving well, and helping to decrease their pain and/or tension. I lead the 200 and 500 hour Therapeutic SomaYoga programs in Des Moines, through Yoga North International SomaYoga Institute, and am also starting to offer Continuing Education in Somatics and breathwork, to PT's, OT's, and possibly massage therapists, etc., in the future. FIGUR8 provides the first FDA-registered, objective musculoskeletal (MSK) assessment tool, replacing outdated subjective methods and driving better patient outcomes.Matt challenges the common misconceptions about workers' comp, revealing why it's one of the highest-paying and most underserved segments in PT. With 900,000+ MSK claims annually—each costing employers $35K–$65K—he breaks down how clinics can leverage objective data to streamline care, reduce claim costs, and attract referrals from the many key stakeholders involved with workers' comp claims.Key Takeaways:• Workers' Comp Is a $1.35B Opportunity: At 12 visits per claim and $125/visit, this market is ripe for clinics willing to embrace it.• Data = Leverage: FIGUR8's technology replaces guesswork with biomechanical insights, justifying care plans and speeding up return-to-work timelines.• Better Payer Mix, Fewer Patients: Workers' comp reimburses higher than Medicare and commercial insurance—meaning clinics can increase revenue while seeing fewer patients.• Stop the Staffing Shortage Myth: Optimizing payer mix (e.g., shifting from 3% to 10% workers' comp) can ease clinician burnout and boost margins.• The "Hub-and-Spoke" Model: Hire one dedicated workers' comp PT to train staff and oversee high-value services (e.g., functional capacity exams billed at $800–$1,200 each). If you're tired of chasing shrinking reimbursements and want a proven way to serve your community and your bottom line, this episode is your wake-up call. In this solo episode of What's Best For The Patient Is Best For Business, Jerry dives into the transformative role of AI voice agents in healthcare—specifically on the non-clinical, pre-arrival side of operations. Jerry shares his firsthand experience working with AI voice technology over the past year, detailing how it's reshaping patient intake, scheduling, benefit checks, and cost callbacks, without replacing human roles.Key Takeaways:- AI voice agents are revolutionizing pre-arrival workflows—but success hinges on understanding your practice's people, processes, and patient journey before implementing the tech.  - Workflow is everything: AI should be strategically inserted into existing systems, not haphazardly overlaid. His case study reveals how mapping out SOPs and scripts upfront slashed onboarding time and costs.  - Human-AI collaboration is key: One client retained staff for quality assurance and follow-up, proving AI works best when complementing—not eliminating—human touchpoints.  - The patient experience gap: With healthcare admin satisfaction at historic lows, Jerry argues AI voice agents can reduce friction (like phone trees and portals) while building trust. All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to welcome Jill Couch as guest to the show.   About Jill Couch:   Jill's grandmother is her inspiration; her dad was her teacher. Both passed from this life with dementia. The DAWN Method taught Jill how to get it right with her dad. Jill is an Occupational Therapist who saw a different way to help in dementia when she began learning the DAWN Method.   About Better People Care LLC:   Jill founded Better People Care in 2018 when she began experiencing how the tools of the DAWN Method were helping her provide the right kind of care for folks experiencing dementia. Now, she and her team bring help and hope for many families in Northern Colorado. In addition, we specialize in training and coaching in the DAWN Method, care management, and healthcare advocacy for people living throughout the United States.   About the DAWN Method:   Here at the Dementia & Alzheimer's Wellbeing Network® (DAWN®), we've discovered something really special. We've found that although our clients lose some cognitive skills, they never lose all their skills. In fact, with dementia, we keep our primary thinking skills and continue to live in the present—fully able to enjoy beauty, positive emotions and companionship.   There are strengths in dementia, and both you and your loved one will benefit when you understand how to provide strength-based care. You will be able to keep your loved one home longer, with fewer conflicts, and your family will have less stress and expense. What they believe: We believe in preserving dignity and autonomy through aging in place for as long as possible. We do this by training families and caregivers to recognize and meet the emotional needs caused by dementia, how to support the cognitive skills their loved ones lose, and how to work with the skills they'll keep.   The seven tools of the DAWN Method® of dementia care:   The tools of the DAWN Method of dementia care: 1. Mood management, 2. Security in Confusion, 3. Security in Care, 4. Social Success, 5. Sense of Control, 6. Sense of Value, 7. Secure Future (in flower shape)   The first three DAWN tools are techniques for caregivers to help their loved ones regain a sense of security. Feeling secure is the most basic human need; we cannot relax if we don't feel safe. The last four tools help caregivers enhance their loved one's sense of contentment (“wellbeing”).   When caregivers use the first three DAWN tools, their loved ones learn that they can still be safe, and become more emotionally stable. With the last four DAWN tools, caregivers are equipped to restore and enhance their loved ones' sense of comfort in moments when discomfort looms.   The model or metaphor that best describes how the tools of the DAWN Method work together is the DAWN flower:   The DAWN flower shows the emotional needs created by dementia as a feedback loop—with the first DAWN tool, mood management, at its center. Mood management is central to being proactive and providing strength-based dementia care, because when someone loses their memory and thinking skills, they have lost the very skills we normally use to manage our own moods.   Their companions have become their mood managers, whether they realize it or not. Learning how to proactively create positive moods is the first tool of the DAWN Method, and one that enriches both care partners for the rest of their lives.   Once caregivers know how to create and maintain positive moods, they can help their loved ones learn an enduring sense of security in the two areas most vital to those undergoing cognitive impairment: learning that they can be safe even when confused, and learning that they can be safe accepting help from others.   The four components of wellbeing are much simpler. Someone can be given the gift of contentment (wellbeing) in moments and, if someone or something takes it away, their care partner can restore it in moments. With dementia, we have no need to learn contentment, because we never lose the skills we need to enjoy what others bring to us.   Once care partners are working with all seven of the DAWN tools, the relationship between them and their loved ones becomes marked by contentment and beauty rather than conflict and distress.

They break down key strategies for detaching from the outcome while staying fully engaged in the process, emphasizing that sales isn't about manipulation but about helping people make informed decisions that align with their needs.Key Takeaways:• Qualifying Leads Matters – Not every inquiry is a good fit. Learn how to ask the right questions upfront to determine if a potential patient is ready, willing, and able to commit.• Detach from the Outcome – Focus on the process, not just the sale. This mindset allows you to serve better without emotional burnout.• Mindset Over Money – If someone isn't ready to invest in their health (financially or mentally), no amount of persuasion will change that—and that's okay.• Acknowledge, Respond, and Close that Door – Handle objections (like cost or insurance) by acknowledging concerns, providing value, and steering the conversation back to the patient's needs.• The Meaning of Patient-Centered Care – If the priority of your calls is getting patients scheduled instead of determining what value you can provide them, you shouldn't be calling your business “patient-centered.”Tune in to this no-nonsense conversation that will challenge how you think about sales in healthcare—whether you're a PT, clinic owner, or sales professional. They are designing the province's first Master's program in Occupational Therapy and Speech Language Pathology and share with listeners why this work means so much to them. For decades, if you were interested in becoming an Occupational Therapist or Speech Language Pathologist, you had to leave the province. That will change in September of 2026 when the University of Saskatchewan launches Master's of Speech Language Pathology and Master's of Occupational Therapy programs. Both of these programs will fall under the School of Rehabilitation Science at the University of Saskatchewan. How these new Master's programs will work together to meet the demand in our province is just one of the questions I had for Kara Broks and Tami Turner. Kara is an SLP, creator and owner of the Speech Language Network business in Saskatoon, and is the Speech Language Pathology Implementation Coordinator with the UofS. You would never guess they didn't know each-other until the university tasked them with creating two new Master's programs. I met with Kara and Tami last week in the University of Saskatchewan's Health Sciences building to learn more about how all of this came to be and the impact their work is going to have in our communities.Listen to YXE Underground wherever you find your favourite podcasts including Apple Podcasts, Spotify or the YXE Underground website. Please feel free to leave a 5-star review if you like what you hear. In this episode Cath is joined by Occupational Therapist and Conscious Parent Coach Maggie Viers. Maggie shares her own growth and awakening in motherhood. She talks about how becoming a mother was a catalyst for her own growth and healing.Motherhood pushed her to look into the details of her own childhood experiences and how these had impacted her. Maggie shares her wisdom, what she finds most helpful in tending to herself and how she prioritises connection with her children and family in a world that is always encouraging us to do more. You will feel hopeful and encouraged after this episode.Maggie is now an Occupational Therapist who has evolved into a conscious parent coach. She has a passion for shifting the paradigm for how we view behavior and supporting other parents to become more connected to themselves, their children, and others. She does this by getting to the “why” and approaching life with curiosity. She helps parents to understand their own nervous system, sensory profile, and triggers so they can better understand their children as well. It wasn't until motherhood that she discovered how her own struggles and patterns had so much to do with her own early childhood experiences and conditioning. For Maggie, becoming a parent was a challenging yet beautiful invitation to go inward and become curious about her own life story so she could show up differently for herself and her kids. You can find Maggie on Instagram @theempoweredfamilyMaggie offers 1:1 coaching through the link in her Instagram bio or www.thrivinglittles.comIf you're enjoying this podcast.
