Jill Couch DAWN Dementia Specialist

All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to welcome Jill Couch as guest to the show.   About Jill Couch:   Jill's grandmother is her inspiration; her dad was her teacher. Both passed from this life with dementia. The DAWN Method taught Jill how to get it right with her dad. Jill is an Occupational Therapist who saw a different way to help in dementia when she began learning the DAWN Method.   About Better People Care LLC:   Jill founded Better People Care in 2018 when she began experiencing how the tools of the DAWN Method were helping her provide the right kind of care for folks experiencing dementia. Now, she and her team bring help and hope for many families in Northern Colorado. In addition, we specialize in training and coaching in the DAWN Method, care management, and healthcare advocacy for people living throughout the United States.   About the DAWN Method:   Here at the Dementia & Alzheimer's Wellbeing Network® (DAWN®), we've discovered something really special. We've found that although our clients lose some cognitive skills, they never lose all their skills. In fact, with dementia, we keep our primary thinking skills and continue to live in the present—fully able to enjoy beauty, positive emotions and companionship.   There are strengths in dementia, and both you and your loved one will benefit when you understand how to provide strength-based care. You will be able to keep your loved one home longer, with fewer conflicts, and your family will have less stress and expense. What they believe: We believe in preserving dignity and autonomy through aging in place for as long as possible. We do this by training families and caregivers to recognize and meet the emotional needs caused by dementia, how to support the cognitive skills their loved ones lose, and how to work with the skills they'll keep.   The seven tools of the DAWN Method® of dementia care:   The tools of the DAWN Method of dementia care: 1. Mood management, 2. Security in Confusion, 3. Security in Care, 4. Social Success, 5. Sense of Control, 6. Sense of Value, 7. Secure Future (in flower shape)   The first three DAWN tools are techniques for caregivers to help their loved ones regain a sense of security. Feeling secure is the most basic human need; we cannot relax if we don't feel safe. The last four tools help caregivers enhance their loved one's sense of contentment (“wellbeing”).   When caregivers use the first three DAWN tools, their loved ones learn that they can still be safe, and become more emotionally stable. With the last four DAWN tools, caregivers are equipped to restore and enhance their loved ones' sense of comfort in moments when discomfort looms.   The model or metaphor that best describes how the tools of the DAWN Method work together is the DAWN flower:   The DAWN flower shows the emotional needs created by dementia as a feedback loop—with the first DAWN tool, mood management, at its center. Mood management is central to being proactive and providing strength-based dementia care, because when someone loses their memory and thinking skills, they have lost the very skills we normally use to manage our own moods.   Their companions have become their mood managers, whether they realize it or not. Learning how to proactively create positive moods is the first tool of the DAWN Method, and one that enriches both care partners for the rest of their lives.   Once caregivers know how to create and maintain positive moods, they can help their loved ones learn an enduring sense of security in the two areas most vital to those undergoing cognitive impairment: learning that they can be safe even when confused, and learning that they can be safe accepting help from others.   The four components of wellbeing are much simpler. Someone can be given the gift of contentment (wellbeing) in moments and, if someone or something takes it away, their care partner can restore it in moments. With dementia, we have no need to learn contentment, because we never lose the skills we need to enjoy what others bring to us.   Once care partners are working with all seven of the DAWN tools, the relationship between them and their loved ones becomes marked by contentment and beauty rather than conflict and distress.

They break down key strategies for detaching from the outcome while staying fully engaged in the process, emphasizing that sales isn't about manipulation but about helping people make informed decisions that align with their needs.Key Takeaways:• Qualifying Leads Matters – Not every inquiry is a good fit. Learn how to ask the right questions upfront to determine if a potential patient is ready, willing, and able to commit.• Detach from the Outcome – Focus on the process, not just the sale. This mindset allows you to serve better without emotional burnout.• Mindset Over Money – If someone isn't ready to invest in their health (financially or mentally), no amount of persuasion will change that—and that's okay.• Acknowledge, Respond, and Close that Door – Handle objections (like cost or insurance) by acknowledging concerns, providing value, and steering the conversation back to the patient's needs.• The Meaning of Patient-Centered Care – If the priority of your calls is getting patients scheduled instead of determining what value you can provide them, you shouldn't be calling your business “patient-centered.”Tune in to this no-nonsense conversation that will challenge how you think about sales in healthcare—whether you're a PT, clinic owner, or sales professional. For more than 50 years, Saskatchewan's Occupational Therapy and Speech Language Pathologist communities have advocated for a university program in our province that would educate and train students in these professions. That dream will soon become a reality at the University of Saskatchewan. You will meet Kara Broks and Tami Turner in this episode of YXE Underground. They are designing the province's first Master's program in Occupational Therapy and Speech Language Pathology and share with listeners why this work means so much to them. For decades, if you were interested in becoming an Occupational Therapist or Speech Language Pathologist, you had to leave the province. That will change in September of 2026 when the University of Saskatchewan launches Master's of Speech Language Pathology and Master's of Occupational Therapy programs. Both of these programs will fall under the School of Rehabilitation Science at the University of Saskatchewan. How these new Master's programs will work together to meet the demand in our province is just one of the questions I had for Kara Broks and Tami Turner. Kara is an SLP, creator and owner of the Speech Language Network business in Saskatoon, and is the Speech Language Pathology Implementation Coordinator with the UofS. She was also the third ever guest on this podcast in 2018. Tami is an Occupational Therapist who has worked with universities across Canada developing OT programs and recruiting students and is the Occupational Therapist Implementation Coordinator with the UofS.They have worked together for the past year building these new Master's programs from scratch, with the help of many new colleagues, and are so excited for the positive impact it will have on people throughout Saskatchewan. Kara and Tami are passionate about making a difference in our communities and I love how they have become dear friends through this process. You would never guess they didn't know each-other until the university tasked them with creating two new Master's programs. I met with Kara and Tami last week in the University of Saskatchewan's Health Sciences building to learn more about how all of this came to be and the impact their work is going to have in our communities.Listen to YXE Underground wherever you find your favourite podcasts including Apple Podcasts, Spotify or the YXE Underground website. Please feel free to leave a 5-star review if you like what you hear. As the summer gardening season rolls into full-throated song, the idea of who has access to the work, joy, and benefits of this practice also comes into view—and feeds what Occupational Therapist and author Jill Mays calls that "green thing inside of us all." As an occupational therapist by career and calling, over the course of her professional life, it became increasingly clear to Jill how many of the occupational therapy goals she set for her diverse clients were well met by the variety of activities, sensory stimulations, and social, mental, and physical benefits of gardening—preferably outside and in the company of others. After several years of developing gardening programs in her now-home town of Truro, MA, Jill has documented the journey of her work, research, and garden program designs for a wide range of special needs in her new book: Nurturing Nature, A Guide to Gardening for Special Needs. With decades of experience as a clinician, practice owner, and healthcare executive, Angela shares her insights on why PTs must lead—or risk being left behind—in the shift toward patient-centered, outcomes-driven care.Key Takeaways:-  Value-Based Care Is Here – Physical therapists must transition from fee-for-service models to payment structures that reward high-quality outcomes, cost efficiency, and patient satisfaction.-  Data Is Non-Negotiable – PTs need to track pain, functional outcomes, and patient satisfaction to prove their value. Angela emphasizes: "If you can't measure it, you can't improve it—or get paid for it."-  The Power of Shared Decision-Making – Angela shares a case study of a knee pain patient who avoided surgery through tailored PT and lifestyle changes—highlighting how aligning care with patient goals improves outcomes and reduces costs.-  PTs as First-Line Providers – In TailorCare's model, PTs triage musculoskeletal cases, collaborating with PCPs, orthopedists, and behavioral health to streamline care and prevent unnecessary procedures.-  Future-Proof Your Practice – Angela outlines four trends reshaping PT: hybrid care (telehealth + in-person), integrated care teams, AI/wearables for outcomes tracking, and patient choice driving reimbursement.-  "Step Up or Get Left Behind" – Angela's rallying cry: PTs have a unique role in prevention, recovery, and wellness—but must advocate for their place at the table in policy and payment reform.Whether you're a clinician, practice owner, or healthcare leader, this episode is a masterclass in positioning physical therapy as the cornerstone of value-based MSK care. In this episode Cath is joined by Occupational Therapist and Conscious Parent Coach Maggie Viers. Maggie shares her own growth and awakening in motherhood. She talks about how becoming a mother was a catalyst for her own growth and healing.Motherhood pushed her to look into the details of her own childhood experiences and how these had impacted her. Maggie shares her wisdom, what she finds most helpful in tending to herself and how she prioritises connection with her children and family in a world that is always encouraging us to do more. You will feel hopeful and encouraged after this episode.Maggie is now an Occupational Therapist who has evolved into a conscious parent coach. She has a passion for shifting the paradigm for how we view behavior and supporting other parents to become more connected to themselves, their children, and others. She does this by getting to the “why” and approaching life with curiosity. She helps parents to understand their own nervous system, sensory profile, and triggers so they can better understand their children as well. It wasn't until motherhood that she discovered how her own struggles and patterns had so much to do with her own early childhood experiences and conditioning. For Maggie, becoming a parent was a challenging yet beautiful invitation to go inward and become curious about her own life story so she could show up differently for herself and her kids. You can find Maggie on Instagram @theempoweredfamilyMaggie offers 1:1 coaching through the link in her Instagram bio or www.thrivinglittles.comIf you're enjoying this podcast. Today's ep is with Jane of @doingmotherhood. Jane is a mother of two and a mental health occupational therapist specialising in matrescence and the perinatal period, currently working at @themindfulbirthmovement. Jane joins us to discuss:Matrescence from an occupational therapist's POV and why it can be such a challenging time for our sense of self, confidence and functioning What a mental health perinatal occupational therapist does and how they can help mothers navigate changes in their functioning or achieve their specific goals (whether that's related to your pelvic floor, returning to work, your identity, or more)Nervous system regulation, both daily strategies to build your capacity and things to do in times of dysregulation in you or your children How understanding our values can help us to navigate transitions and shifting identities This is such an insightful episode. Jane describes how motherhood is unique because most of us are really thrown into parenthood without any real opportunity to learn or practice the skills and tasks that come with mothering. It makes sense then, that our sense of self and confidence may be rocked through the experience, and that this can have flow-on impacts to our functioning. Jane shares why this all occurs and what we can do about it. Jane offers the newly launched ‘Birth of Us' antenatal program - a program designed to help parents step into parenthood with confidence and practical knowledge. Resources, counselling and support are also available at The Mindful Birth Movement.Join our community on instagram @growingupraisinguspodcast to see photos of our weekly guests, behind the scenes moments, and keep up to date with episode releases. This podcast was recorded on the unceded lands of the Taungurung, Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung/Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation.
