Even if we're all striving to look and feel young, physically, we shouldn't lose sight of the importance of also feeling young in spirit. My coach asked me a question that completely flipped the script for me the other day. He said: “Where do you think the source of your results come from?” The truth was, I had been going down a rabbit hole thinking of what I didn't, and don't, have. But when I thought about my answer to his question… Everything I've ever earned, I felt really good about beforehand. The lesson, paradoxically, is that you've got to feel how you would once you achieve your goals BEFORE you're able to actually achieve them. In this episode, we share how we put ourselves into that state. Months into our new life in Italy, it continues to be endlessly fascinating how different the Italian culture is. For example, today, we're talking about honesty. In America, we have a thing called a “white lie.” When someone asks how their butt looks in a dress, you do somersaults trying to let them down politely – or flat out say it looks great in order to make the sale or move on from the moment. In Italy, someone might say “That's no good on you” or “You have no ass.” While it can take you by surprise, we've come to really appreciate this honesty. We discuss that and more quirks of Italian culture, such as the value they place on beauty, rest, and quality of life, and how you can capture more of each in your life. As a podcast guest, Jeffrey Madoff, presented about a thousand different angles and directions to take the conversation. We begin the journey in the grocery store cereal aisle, where, as an eighth grader, he dabbled in cognitive neuroscience and the hidden brain training that goes into product merchandising. From there, we hit the neighborhood streets, where, at the ripe old age of sixteen, Jeffrey became the nation's top selling Fuller Brush sales representative. He goes on to describe his 50-year love affair with life in New York City before we unpack the valuable lessons he learned in the film industry, world of fashion, and his fifteen-year teaching career at Parsons School of Design. Jeff, who authored “Creative Careers: Making a Living With Your Ideas” in 2020, walks us through the mindset and leadership practices that have allowed him to pursue and achieve the collective life experience of many individual people, combined. His inspiring story is a great example of when betting on yourself goes incredibly right. In This Conversation We Cover: [3:00] Jeffrey's early interests and sales success [12:10] Turning his attention (back) to fashion [15:53] Making the jump to New York City [21:23] Learning the movie industry [28:18] Business motivations and priorities [30:57] Living by creativity and curiosity [46:28] Rapid fire questions Resources: READ: https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Careers-Making-Living-Ideas/dp/0738246700 (Creative Careers: Making a Living With Your Ideas) READ: https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/heuristics-and-biases/0975337F864379F2729EAD873D804BA8 (Heuristics and Biases: The Psychology of Intuitive Judgment) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/b-jeffrey-madoff-5baa8074/ (Jeffrey Madoff) https://www.apa.org/monitor/dec02/nobel.html (Psychologist wins Nobel Prize) Text "Dream Life" to 310- 388-9724 to get our FREE dream life course Mastermind: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind) Connect with Rob on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/robmurgatroyd/ (@robmurgatroyd) Connect with Kim on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kimmurgatroyd/ (@kimmurgatroyd) To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com) Work Hard Play Hard is a production of http://crate.media (Crate Media)
Everything comes to an end. The sooner we can come to terms with that, the sooner we can get the most out of every moment of the present. In this episode, Kim and I talk about coming to terms with micro-expiration dates on shorter periods of time in our lives, the important relationships and experiences we'll never get back after they're gone – whether it be our dwindling years with Sophia in this dream apartment or how many walks are left in the family dog. This realization is part of the reason we moved to Italy, and a bigger reason why that decision has paid off so immensely. Paul Attia is a trial lawyer, family business advisor, and an executive in his own family's enterprise. Working as a litigator for nearly fifteen years has provided him ringside seats to the results of poor decision making. In the courtroom, Paul saw the process often as a person at the bottom of a cliff, catching those who have already jumped. However, as an advisor to family businesses and enterprises, Paul works with each member to help them identify, grasp, and distill the issues at play, and works to guide them to their desired outcomes. We talk about his upbringing, his history working in his own family business, and why it's important to walk into situations assuming you haven't figured it all out. The thing about growth is that it never stops. Just when you've hit a new level, it's time to look up and see what bigger challenges lie ahead. No matter how skilled a climber you are, each time you step into something new, the all-too-familiar fear of the unknown starts to creep into your psyche. In this episode, we talk about stepping into projects and dreams that seem too big to handle. It's always daunting, and it should be. Daniel Vitalis is wild. No, really. A former vegan, he's found that, for himself and many of the people he's worked with over the years, one of the best ways to lead a healthier, more fulfilling life is to “rewild” yourself and remember how to integrate with nature. After learning the skills of hunting, fishing, and foraging, Daniel teaches and inspires others to pursue their own wild-food journey and reconnect with the wisdom of nature. Beyond food, he is incredibly grounded and brings a lot of thoughtful discussions to the table. Among many other things, we talk about the skills people learn from spending time in harsh environments, what our teeth can tell us about nutrition, and getting intimate with death. In This Conversation We Cover: [01:46] Recontextualizing the skills gained from a hard life [04:48] What being a vegan taught Daniel about the transformational power of food [10:02] How one dentist's findings radically changed how Daniel thinks about food [19:12] Rewilding and rediscovering wisdom in nature [27:35] The demasculinization of culture [37:24] Getting comfortable with hunting and killing animals [43:27] Rapid-fire questions Resources: https://www.danielvitalis.com/ (danielvitalis.com) Watch: https://www.wild-fed.com/ (WildFed) Listen: https://www.danielvitalis.com/rewild-yourself-podcast (ReWild Yourself Podcast) Text "Dream Life" to 310- 388-9724 to get our FREE dream life course Mastermind: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind) Connect with Rob on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/robmurgatroyd/ (@robmurgatroyd) Connect with Kim on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kimmurgatroyd/ (@kimmurgatroyd) To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com) Work Hard Play Hard is a production of http://crate.media (Crate Media)
We all have tales we like to tell about our lives, but sometimes our stories can begin to dominate conversations and get repetitive for those around us. They start to define who we are. Don't get me wrong, some stories are great. You climbed Everest? Killer. It's the negative, naggy, and pointlessly personal stories that we want to leave in the past. Holding onto them is only eating away at you, hurting your chances of moving on and living a better life. In this introspective Fri-Date episode, we make the argument for why you should leave those stories behind and start drafting a new narrative of your own making. What Katie Spotz has accomplished defies all logic. In fact, while researching for this interview, I had to double and triple-check my sources just to be sure. Katie is a world-class endurance athlete who has shattered world records and defied the impossible on more than one occasion. Her list of accomplishments is so long I couldn't even begin to share them all here. She's run five Ironman triathlons, cycled across the country from Seattle to Washington D.C., run 100 miles nonstop, and swam the entire length of a 325-mile river. We talk about the mindset it takes to accomplish challenges of this ilk and how important it is to have a strong why to keep you going when you're about to give up. OK, I'm saying it. I am judgmental. Working with a coach, I was told I needed to work on being less judgmental… and it pissed me off. That's how I know there's truth to it. It's a flaw, and it's something that I'm not proud of, but I have to be real here and share what I'm going through. In this conversation, Kim and I break down what it means to be judgmental, how it can be a good thing, where it goes wrong, and how I'm trying to get better in that department. Mike Ayala is a fascinating man. By 24, he had founded his first construction company and just over 10 years later, exited it. He's now an investor, speaker, podcaster, and Founder of Investing for Freedom. He works hard, but only because he wants to. He's a man who realized the fastest and most effective way to gain freedom is to work hard when you want to, and take time off when you don't. He's shaped his life entirely around that philosophy. In this episode, we explore how his upbringing prepared him for his current aspirations and how the people around you are more important for creating lasting change and growth than anything else. In this episode, we share five things, lessons, learnings, or just interesting facts, about life in Italy and what we've learned over these three months. Look, sex is an important part of life. For men, it seems that's a given. But for too long, women have been told their sexual health doesn't matter. After blazing a trail in the men's sexual health industry, Cindy Eckert decided this inequality wasn't fair. We are lab rats. We're constantly experimenting on ourselves to find the optimal way to make ourselves fitter, skinnier, healthier, happier, whatever it is we're trying to do that day. We've tried everything – including the CGM, or continuous glucose monitor, which we've come back around to. What it does is monitor your glucose levels throughout the day, particularly how your levels rise the two hours after eating something. Now that we're in Italy, we really wanted to give this thing a test run. We spend this episode digging into what we found and why it shocked us. There are new technologies and scientific discoveries being presented every day that make it possible to reverse the effects of aging on the body and treat previously incurable diseases. Award-winning psychologist, author, and fellow Brooklynite, Ethan Kross, is a world-renowned expert on conscious mind management. His fascination with introspection began at The University of Pennsylvania and has evolved into a full-time mission to reveal the potent power of our inner voice. Ethan's work is anchored by what he defines as “chatter,” AKA that negative inner voice that says that you're not worthy or capable of doing X, Y, or Z. He's here to tell you that you don't have to give in to negative self-talk, and show you the neurological roadmap to rewire the internal dialogue you're having with yourself. In This Conversation We Cover: [11:03] Why introspection is a double-edged sword [18:35] Finding a balance between nature and nurture [22:33] What is “chatter,” and how does it impact our lives [34:36] The cost of anxiety and depression for the economy [29:10] How culture affects chatter [34:07] The power of touch and placebo [39:48] Why venting isn't the best thing for your health [41:55] The truth about processing childhood trauma Resources: https://www.ethankross.com/ (Ethankross.com) Read: https://www.ethankross.com/chatter/ (Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why it Matters and How to Harness It) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ethankross/?hl=en (@ethankross) Text "Dream Life" to 310- 388-9724 to get our FREE dream life course Mastermind: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind) Connect with Rob on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/robmurgatroyd/ (@robmurgatroyd) Connect with Kim on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kimmurgatroyd/ (@kimmurgatroyd) To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com) Work Hard Play Hard is a production of http://crate.media (Crate Media)
As we settle into life in Florence, Italy, we've been struck by their cultural codes, built on trust, connection, and reputation. These pillars drive any personal or professional transaction in the city. Need a haircut? Have a coffee with a barber. Looking for an apartment? Lean on a friend for an introduction. Getting a package delivered? The shop next door will sign for it if you can't. The emotional investment to get to know the person, beyond a contract or credit check, seems to reflect how the community is bound by something more significant than black and white legalities. Coming from California, you can see how this has led to some beautiful and bizarre moments, which we dive into in this episode. In This Conversation We Cover: [03:42] - The cultural differences when it comes to trust in the U.S and Italy [07:23] - Why contracts and credit checks do not matter here [16:34] - How blind trust inspires you to show up differently [25:08] - Your word as currency Resources: Text "Dream Life" to 310- 388-9724 to get our FREE dream life course Mastermind: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind) Connect with Rob on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/robmurgatroyd/ (@robmurgatroyd) Connect with Kim on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kimmurgatroyd/ (@kimmurgatroyd) To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com) Work Hard Play Hard is a production of http://crate.media (Crate Media)
Jon Levy is the creator of The Influencers Dinner, a gathering of thought leaders and tastemakers from different industries where they are not allowed to discuss their profession or share their last name. These dinners are legendary, and they have become one of the most fascinating social experiments out there. We got a review recently that we thought it would be valuable to discuss on the show. To paraphrase, it says: “I love the show, but there are too many bad words. It's unprofessional, and I think people would enjoy it more if you swore less.” Getting past the expletive-filled gut response, this does actually bring about an interesting conversation. We all say we value authenticity, but is censorship authentic? Can we value authenticity while still wanting people to change who they are for us? I don't think our answer will surprise you, but we want to give you our take on why we are the way we are – and why this podcast is better for it. Dr. Dominic D'Agostino is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida and Research Scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. His laboratory develops and tests metabolic-based strategies for neurological disorders, cancer, and for enhancing safety and resilience of military personnel in extreme environments. His research is supported by the Office of Naval Research, Department of Defense, private organizations, and foundations. He's the genius behind so many things when it comes to keto, but there's already plenty of keto information out there. One of the most exciting parts of moving to Italy for us was not only living in Florence, but all of the other incredible locations that were just a train ride or a short flight away. At a restaurant in Venice, we spoke to the son of a restaurant owner and he had a Scottish accent when he spoke English. It turns out he went to school there. Why? Because “You can't be in the restaurant business and have interesting conversations with people if you don't know the world.” This episode is all over the place… except it isn't. We're going to talk about the power of having deep conversations with interesting people, allowing kismet to happen, and listening to the lessons the universe is throwing in your face. We've been listening to Abraham Hicks lately, and there was one talk that really resonated with us – specifically surrounding our recent move. Abraham says, “You're not always consciously aware of your plan,” and that could not be more true. Looking back on our lives, you can see how you have planned for your current situation. We've talked about manifestation before, but this conversation is more about the unconscious ways you manifest your life – both positive and negative – and how taking ownership of that power allows you to control it, and bring it into alignment with your life. In This Conversation We Cover: [03:04] How you follow an unconscious plan [08:15] When your unconscious plan comes into alignment [11:55] Changing your reality with a positive thought [18:41] Taking ownership of your manifestation [22:17] The power of getting lost in a daydream Resources: Text "Dream Life" to 310- 388-9724 to get our FREE dream life course Mastermind: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind) Connect with Rob on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/robmurgatroyd/ (@robmurgatroyd) Connect with Kim on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kimmurgatroyd/ (@kimmurgatroyd) To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com) Work Hard Play Hard is a production of http://crate.media (Crate Media)

The problem is we've been hearing from many people who are struggling to get in touch with what their dream actually is. People need variety. Routines are great, but it's the spaces where we break free from our routine and experience something new where life is truly lived. Environment plays a major role in this because it dictates so much of how you go about your day. For us, moving to Italy has been such a pattern interrupter that it feels as if we are living every moment as it happens. You don't have to move to Italy to create the same effect; just take some time to acknowledge the contrast between the life you have and the life you imagine for yourself – and use that contrast to start inspiring action. We've talked before about finding out how much your dream life is actually going to cost you to live (and how it's likely lower than you think), but it is still probably out of reach, and you may not know how to close the gap. We've been getting questions about how we saved up enough to live our dream life and break our money ceiling. We're going to share the strategies we used to get here. Whatever your dream life is, we believe these will apply to any situation. In This Conversation We Cover: [04:27] How we decided on our dream life budget [14:56] The way we save up money [15:58] Reverse-engineering your dream life [17:02] What you have to say “no” to [25:20] How we've set up our savings [32:54] The mindset necessary to reach your dream life Resources: Read: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FCJZ3G (Secrets of the Millionaire Mind: Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth) Text "Dream Life" to 310- 388-9724 to get our FREE dream life course Mastermind: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind) Connect with Rob on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/robmurgatroyd/ (@robmurgatroyd) Connect with Kim on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kimmurgatroyd/ (@kimmurgatroyd) To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com) Work Hard Play Hard is a production of http://crate.media (Crate Media)
We did it. We are one week into our Italian dream life and it's better than we ever imagined. Let us take a moment to walk you through the process of moving, the last minute apprehensions, the jetlag-fueled bumps, and, finally, the moment where there was no question that we made the right choice. As we prep our move to Italy, many people have reached out to say how jealous they are or that they are cheering us on for being vulnerable about how hard this is. Many of those people say that they could never do what we are doing because it's too scary. That has me thinking about how fear often holds us back from doing what we truly want to do. It wasn't easy for us to do this, but we have to remind ourselves every day that it could work out even better than we imagine it. You can get there too. In This Conversation We Cover: [02:46] When fear paralyzes you [05:36] The moments that created massive growth in my life [08:40] Getting comfortable with discomfort in order to grow [10:10] Acknowledging the unknown [13:59] How we're designed to grow Resources: Text "Dream Life" to 310- 388-9724 to get our FREE dream life course Mastermind: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com/mastermind) Connect with Rob on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/robmurgatroyd/ (@robmurgatroyd) Connect with Kim on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kimmurgatroyd/ (@kimmurgatroyd) To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: https://workhardplayhardpodcast.com/ (workhardplayhardpodcast.com) Work Hard Play Hard is a production of http://crate.media (Crate Media)
Sekou Andrews is a spoken-word poet who may, at first, seem like an odd person to have on the show. You're going to have to trust me on this. Creativity is an important part of playing hard, and it's my goal to expose you to many different avenues of expressing that creativity. Sekou has incredible insights. We talk about what it's like to speak in front of Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou, and Barack Obama at the same time, and how it feels to get nominated for a Grammy for spoken-word poetry. He offers a different perspective on creativity that you're going to find benefit from, regardless of whether or not you consider yourself creative.
