You need sun protection as much as you need vitamin D. But can you have both, without skin damage or nutritional deficiency? Vitamin D is essential for our well-being, promoting bone growth and supporting a robust immune system. Deficiency in this vital nutrient can lead to a host of health issues, including osteoporosis and a weakened immune response. While our skin produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, many people believe that using sunscreen and other forms of sun protection can lead to vitamin D deficiency. As a result, they often resort to unprotected sun exposure to obtain adequate levels of the vitamin. However, this approach can expose them to a new set of serious health risks. For the first episode of the much-awaited comeback of the Dermhealth.Co Podcast powered by Digital Health Co, we are talking about vitamin D, sunscreen and everything in between with Mathew Collett, CEO of Solar-D Derma-Tech. Mathew shares his knowledge on the importance of balancing sun protection and vitamin D production. He explains how Solar-D technology creates sunscreens that allow the skin to produce vitamin D while still providing broad-spectrum protection.  Key points covered in the episode: Vitamin D is actually a steroid hormone produced by the body when exposed to UVB light from the sun. It plays a crucial role in strengthening cells and boosting the immune system. Traditional sunscreens can inhibit vitamin D production by up to 99%, contributing to widespread vitamin D deficiency. Practitioners should educate clients on the importance of sensible sun exposure and recommend sunscreens that promote vitamin D production while still offering adequate protection. Solar-D's technology can be incorporated into various skincare products, including tinted moisturisers, face creams, and haircare products, making it a game-changer in the skincare industry.
