#122 — How to Win More Business, Make More Friends, and Get More Money, aka: How to Listen Better What happens when we listen fully? Without interjecting with our own opinions or experiences? Without asserting a best possible outcome or stating facts to support a specific viewpoint? How often do you leave a conversation—with a friend or colleague—and think to yourself, “They just don’t get what I mean/how I feel/how complicated this is.” How often do you catch yourself offering advice or trying to fix a problem for a friend before you realize they really just want a safe space and a friendly ear to empathize and process with them? Sarah digs into these overlapping experiences and asks the big question, “How can we create space in our personal and professional conversations to allow for real connection, true empathy, and beautifully nuanced understanding of one another?" Today we’re talking about how deep listening and thoughtful questioning lend themselves to much more open, nuanced, thoughtful conversations and relationships. Sarah is going to share the incredibly simple and astonishingly powerful tool she uses in her personal and professional life to connect more deeply with people, to grow her business, and to be of the deepest service to her clients, friends, and mastermind groups.  IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT How we tend to believe we know what’s best for others based on our own experiences, information, and desires. How quickly we lose sight of the true goal of conversation—connection—and instead move into problem solving, telling our own stories, or moving on to the next point. Sarah’s experience in her second birth of hiring and then ultimately choosing not to work with a doula who, rather than listening to Sarah and Alex’s preferences and desires, attempted to “educate” them into choosing a different path. The delicate and crucial difference between presenting useful information so someone can make a thoughtful decision for themselves and believing that someone “ought” to choose a specific choice due to the information you have. The profound power of a woman’s birth story and her decision to experience a pain-free birth. Why we strive at Startup Pregnant to present a wide range of experiences of pregnancy, parenthood, and work and why we always begin those stories with “in my experience.” The not-so-secret reason that coaching and therapy are so highly in need in our current culture. The super simple, incredibly effective tool Sarah uses in her life, masterminds, and with her corporate clients to build relationships and close deals. In honor of this month of Mother's Day, and the Mother's Quest Manifesto Challenge I launched in the Facebook Group, I'm excited to continue sharing episodes each Thursday that can inspire you to claim your motherhood and life journey on your terms. This "encore episode" with The Truth Bomb Mom Kristina Kuzmic, where she talks about the importance of embracing our flaws and creating a family mission statement, has become a favorite. Along with the reflective prompts and live guest videos in the Mother's Quest Facebook Group, I hope this episode will also provide some inspiration and permission for you to create your #oneminutemommanifesto, a declaration of how you want to journey through motherhood and life. If you haven't yet followed along with the Manifesto Challenge, it's not too late. All the video replays and instructions are waiting for you as a "unit" in the Mother's Quest Facebook Group. We'd love to have you come over and join us!  And...if you create and share your #oneminutemommanifesto on social media before the end of May, we'll enter you into a drawing for some incredible classes and resources from amazing members of the Mother's Quest community.  Whether it's new to you, or you'll be listening for a second time, I hope you enjoy this encore episode with Kristina Kuzmic. And that you'll take us up on the challenge to create and share your #oneminutemommanifesto!  Much appreciation, P.S. Know someone who would love this conversation? Click forward now to pay this forward to a friend who may be interested. I am excited to share this vulnerable conversation with the Truth Bomb Mom, Kristina Kuzmic. Energetic, funny, and honest, Kristina has an in-your-face perspective on issues of parenting and life in general. She has become a Youtube sensation with her “mom-centric” videos about raising children and juggling all of life’s challenges, with over 200 million views across media outlets and websites worldwide. Kristina and her husband currently live in Southern California, where her most important, rewarding, and exhausting careers include being a sanitation engineer, chef, chauffeur, and conflict resolution guru for her three (mostly satisfied) clients – her children. In this episode, we talk about Kristina’s experience growing up in America, shaped by an escape from war-torn Croatia. She shares how on a whim, she went from being a divorced mother on food stamps to winning a cooking show on Oprah’s OWN Network in 2011.  How her satirical YouTube video, “4 Reasons Women Should NEVER Breastfeed in Public,” went viral and why Kristina believes it is her community that is responsible for her reaching a half a million followers. We get honest and emotional about our flaws and insecurities but also our impact and the power of sharing these with our children. Finally, we reflect on our shared experience of losing a baby in utero and how for both of us, focusing on just one positive thing on that day shifted our perspective and changed everything. I hope you leave this conversation, as I did, inspired to keep turning the pages in the chapter of your E.P.I.C.life, staying true to your mission, owning your flaws, and paying attention to one positive thing every day. I was so grateful for this time with Kristina and I know you will be too. In This Episode We Talk About: How growing up in war-torn Croatia and her subsequent immigration to the U.S. impacted her life How her mother influenced her parenting by striking a healthy balance between enforcing rules and fostering joy Why she named her company “Flawed” and how she has let go of perfection Her journey from Oprah to YouTube The importance of community and of women who champion each other How to turn down the volume on our inner critics What my son said to me that Kristina says she will never forget Resources and Topics Mentioned: Kristina’s viral video: 4 Reasons Women Should Never Breastfeed in Public (a sarcastic take on the arguments against breastfeeding) Visit Kristina on YouTube: www.youtube.com/stickycook Visit Kristina on Facebook: www.facebook.com/KristinaKuzmic Mother’s Quest Theory of Change Previous Mother’s Quest Episodes Mentioned: Ep 09: The Soul-Fueled Truth with Amber Lilyestrom and Ep 00: Planting Seeds for Mother’s Quest – An Introduction Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear Kristina’s Positivity Challenge – and sign up here to download the free “E.P.I.C. #113 — How to Raise Successful Children: Trust and Respect in Parenting, School, and Business Why is so much parenting advice seemingly in direct conflict with others? How do we determine who is correct? How do we make these emotional decisions for ourselves? Esther Wojcicki is considered the most influential educator in contemporary times and her pedagogical and epistemological philosophy is being adapted by local Silicon Valley schools as well as national and global educational programs. She is the pioneer of Moonshot Thinking, a program that she uses in schools, and her influence in technology-enabled schools has been central to the tenants and design of new modern education systems. She is also known as the mother in Silicon Valley who raised three of the most successful women in the United States. You may recognize her as the mother of Susan Wojcicki, the CEO of YouTube; of Janet Wojcicki, who has a PhD in medical anthropology and teaches at the University of California San Francisco’s medical center; and Anna Wojcicki, the founder of the biotech and genetics testing company 23andMe. Today on this episode we get to talk to Esther about her core principles in her pedagogical style and her parenting style. How she promotes independence, critical thinking and encourages kids to dive into topics that truly excite them. Her focus and work is on how to help children become young adults by developing the self-sufficiency to take control of their futures. IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT How pregnancy and birth recommendations have changed over the last 40 years. How giving even the youngest children jobs or tasks can increase their feelings of accomplishment and self-worth. The value behind speaking to babies and toddlers like they are a partner and understanding presence.   Her acronym for success, TRICK, which stands for: trust, respect, independence, collaboration and kindness. That giving young children the space to be independent teaches them that: they are capable and that you trust them. How the single piece of advice Dr. Woj wants to pass on to new mothers is quite simple: trust yourself. No one knows your baby better than you. What Dr. Woj considers to be the main value of sleep training (hint: it’s not sleep). How successful businesses embody the same relationship with their employees that Dr. Woj used to raise her children and currently uses with her students. #109 — Co-founders Elena Rue and Catherine Orr on being pregnant at the same time The two co-founders were both already parents. They’d done the pregnancy thing before. Then they found out they both were pregnant again, and at the same time. Elena Rue and Catherine Orr are co-founders of StoryMine Media, a company that creates documentary videos for mission-driven organizations. They’d been in business together for years, and were both already parents to young children. Yet they’d been able to balance being co-founders because one was always able to cover for the other one if a pregnancy came up. This time, however, they were due within weeks of each other! Both co-founders pregnant? Use it as a kick in the pants Yet instead of panic and think that business was over, they decided to talk about how to go about planning for pregnancies as entrepreneurs in a different way. They decided to use their joint pregnancies as a kick in the pants to implement changes that they’d been wanting to make as a business for years. The intersection of entrepreneurship and pregnancy is a place I’m fascinated with at Startup Pregnant, and every interview we do shares another story of how to tackle this life design challenge in new and interesting ways. How can we make business better because of pregnancy? What if we looked at our bodies slowing down or our need for rest not as a curse on business, but as a fascinating opportunity for renovation and re-design? Not that we’re saying this is easy None of us are saying that this is easy or wonderful to go through—change sometimes feels like it comes through with a sledgehammer—but it is, in some cases, an opportunity for growth and leveling up. IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT: How to unroll your pregnancies and announce them strategically (and where the balance is between being authentic and also being strategic). Using pregnancy as a leverage point and changing project timelines, expectations, and deliverables accordingly. How to build a better team, and get better at building teams. Why they finally took advice they’d been hearing over and over again and actually implemented it (pregnancy was the thing that made them take the advice to heart, and take action). Today you’ll get to hear not just from two pregnant women, but from three pregnant women, all in their third trimesters! Why? I recorded this interview back when I was also 38 weeks pregnant, so you’ll get to hear it all from all of us. Yes, we’ll tell it like it is. Listen in to this joint conversation as we talk about what to do when you find out your co-founder is pregnant at the same time as you. Melissa Monte is the host of the popular podcast, Mind Love. Not long ago, Melissa was spiraling. She was bulimic, self-destructive and had no sense of self-love. The darker her inner world became, the more her life seemed to follow. Melissa had the outer life experiences that could understandably justify the darkness of her inner world—she was sexually assaulted, twice; she struggled with a destructive eating disorder for 10 years; her best friend committed suicide; she lost a parent from lymphoma; she was emotionally trapped in a manipulative relationship that ultimately landed her in jail for someone else’s crime—however, it was ultimately through changing her mind about her perception of her experiences and her Self that she turned her life around. Now, through her podcast, Mind Love, she teaches other people the many tools that she used to light up her inner world. In this interview she shares raw stories about her past, what she did to move through it, how she is still processing parts of it, and how she has turned it into her purpose and life’s work.   IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT: How your life reflects your mindset Opening your mind + expanding your possibilities through inner work Melissa’s background and what led her to do the deep inner work Some of the tools Melissa used to change her mind Why it is important to be patient with yourself while unpacking trauma How she navigates the “unpacking” now Plus much more…   RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE  Mind Love Podcast Catch Melissa on Instagram Catch Mind Love Podcast on Instagram   LET’S CONNECT Website: Bryannadee.com Instagram: @bryanna_dee Facebook: Facebook.com/bryannadee Pinterest: Pinterest.com/bryannadee/
