Today on the Friends in Beauty Podcast I welcome Nen10doe to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.    Nen10doe is a nail tech based in the DMV area who went viral during the pandemic for not only doing nails but for shattering the gender & orientation norms that usually come along with being a nail tech. He’s been featured on Good Morning America and WUSA9.   Doing nails was never something that Nen10doe saw for his future but after getting kicked out of the Navy, coming home trying to make ends meet, and then losing his job again he was presented with an offer that he couldn’t refuse. He put his pride aside and in turn stumbled across his passion & literally hasn’t taken any days off ever since.    It was such a pleasure interviewing Nen10doe. We talked about so much that this had to be a 2 part interview. What I loved about interviewing Nen10doe was his transparency. He shared his story so openly and so freely & I’m truly inspired by his hustle, his passion, and his perseverance during the tough times.    In this interview Nen10doe shares: His humble beginnings growing up in DC How his journey as a nail tech began What it’s like being a black male nail tech How his family and friends responded to him wanting to do nails for a living And all of the trials + tribulations he survived to be where he is now + so much more   It’s literally history in the making and I’m happy to be able to share this interview with you. Today on the Friends in Beauty Podcast I’m sharing with you an important + IMPACTFUL event that is going down this Sunday, February 28, 2021.   The Black Beauty Roster is hosting its first Virtual Beauty Summit and it’s going to be EPIC!   The Black Beauty Roster's mission is to bring meaningful diversity across the fashion and entertainment industry by amplifying the work and talent of Black Beauty Professionals.   They believe this can be done by increasing visibility, access and opportunity for Black Beauty Pros, while also educating the industry and non BIPOC Beauty Professionals on textured hair and diverse skin tones. They focus on creating opportunities, increasing education to support the industry and beauty professionals, and advocating for talented artists.   Black Beauty Roster is built on Opportunity, Education, and Advocacy.   The Black Beauty Roster was created by my friends over at Bonnti App at the start of the pandemic because they saw how their friends and colleagues in the beauty industry were struggling.   The Black Beauty roster is a platform to help Black beauty pros find opportunities, mentorship, and build their careers.   As you may or may not know inclusion in the beauty + entertainment industry has been an ongoing issue for years. Unqualified beauty professionals have been hired to work with talent of color or just ignored by brands all together and we’ve had enough. It’s time for things to change.   So, on February 28th they are launching the BBR Summit, a one day digital event bringing together leaders, change makers, influencers and advocates in fashion, beauty, and entertainment to teach, talk, and learn about advocacy, allyship, and equity in beauty and beyond + come up with plan for action.   Tune in to learn more about what to expect from the Black Beauty Roster Summit and grab your FREE ticket today. Ep. 32: Derricka & Erricka- How The Traylor Twins Turned Their Trauma Into Beauty, Faith, & Resilience

Friends in Beauty Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 4, 2020 63:53

Today on the Friends in Beauty Podcast we welcome Derricka & Erricka Traylor, owners of Transformations Beauty Studio, to the guest chair. Transformations Beauty Studio (TBS) started in 2016 by twin sisters Derricka and Erricka Traylor in Atlanta when they turned their personal experience of mental health battles and self-love into a Transformation studio for black women.    TBS was formed after both sisters dealt with emotional and mental trauma they never thought they’d grow from: In 2015, Derricka’s husband and young son at the time experienced a home invasion, leaving her husband learning to walk again and leaving their family to rebuild from nothing. In 2015, Erricka lost everything after an engagement gone wrong. At that moment she learned that having everything tied to someone you aren’t bonded to by marriage is the wrong route to take. Feeling low and disconnected from the world during that time, they sought to create a business that allowed them to feel strong and complete again. They wanted something to represent their change and what they’d be bringing to their client's lives.   From that day forward they realized how important it was to have multiple streams of income, women being able to love themselves enough, feel beautiful and be mentally fit to stand on their own two feet and a place women could let go, rebuild, and transform from traumatic moments in their life.    Although these two could  have built a business in any area due to their many talents; they decided on something that was filled with passion and purpose. At a young age they both were introduced to the beauty industry while working at their grandfather salon washing hair. Using their childhood experience, combined with Ericka’s background in business management and sales and Derricka’s in cosmetology – they’ve been able to help transform their clients' appearance and boost their confidence, while promoting a happy, safe and healthy environment.   Both Erricka and Derricka believe that “Women struggle every day with their appearance and insecurities. when clients come to Transformations Beauty Studio not only do they receive a stylist and quality hair but they receive sisterhood, a life-coach and someone to confide in.” Operating on those values Transformations Beauty Studio has grown to be one of the most popular salons in Atlanta, GA. Unexpected Retirement: How Do I Find Work to Fill the Gap?

Retirement Answer Man

What do you do if you lose your job but you’re still not ready to retire? Whether it’s personally, professionally, or financially, if you’re not ready to retire then you’ll have to take action to find new employment. How do you fill that gap between this job loss and retirement? On this episode of Retirement Answer Man, we’ll brainstorm some ways that you can take action to find your next job.  What happens to you when you lose your job? Losing your job sucks. It never feels good to get pushed in a direction that you aren’t ready to take. It can zap your confidence even if the job loss had nothing to do with your performance.  There are several things that happen when you lose your job. You lose your connections. You lose the rhythm of your life. You lose the intellectual challenge. And of course, you lose your income.  Losing your job can make it feel like all your dreams have been zapped away.  What next? While it’s okay to have feelings of anger, sadness, and remorse, you don’t want to wallow in them. One outlet you can take is to journal. When I’m faced with a difficult situation, I like to get all my feelings out on paper. I essentially yell into the page. This form of release can even help me figure out what my next step will be.  If you find yourself floundering and you don’t know what to do next, be sure to listen to episode 346 to discover some first steps to take when you lose your job. It’s important to start to get that forward momentum going so you don’t just sit there shellshocked.  Ways to fill the income gap quickly What if you are really strapped for cash and you need income right away? If you don’t have the cash reserves to wait out a lengthy job search there are several ways that you can start earning income quickly.  File for unemployment Register at temp agencies like Manpower.  Declutter your house and sell things on OfferUp or eBay.  Deliver groceries or food with UberEats or drive for Uber.  Consider a job at Starbucks if you need health benefits. Tutor online or teach English remotely None of these are perfect solutions, but they can help you be proactive and gain forward momentum.  How do you move forward in your job search? The first step to take in your job search is to update your resume. It may have been a while since you have done so. Here are some tips for resume writing from an experienced HR professional: Look for keywords in the jobs that you want. Listen in to hear why your resume often won’t make it past the screening stage without these keywords. Have a base resume then tweak it to the specific job. Gone are the days when you only have one resume. Review resume examples for the job you want.  Make your resume simple and easy to read.  Focus on measurable accomplishments.  Put the most important information first and only use the last 10 years of your work history in your resume. Use these action verbs to help your resume stand out.  Listen in to hear what you should do after you update your resume to help you take action and find your next job. Stick around until the end to hear the Coaches Corner segment with BW to learn about your changing relationships in retirement. Health Care and Spirituality, with Dr. John Welshofer

Back Talk Doc

Imagine you suffer from a painful disc injury that prevents you from engaging in many of your daily activities. For most people, the obvious course of action is to go see your doctor, where it’s likely you’ll have a physical examination and be prescribed medications and/or surgery. At the end of this course of treatment, you hope to be pain-free and back to your daily routine. Many patients never stop to ask themselves, “is there anything else I could be doing to improve my circumstances?” Dr. John Welshofer would answer you with an emphatic “yes!,” and he’s here today to tell you why. While the idea of spirituality can be off-putting for some, a growing number of physicians believe spirituality can play a significant role in our physical and emotional health. On this episode of Back Talk Doc, our host, Sanjiv Lakhia, speaks with Dr. John Welshofer, a physician that believes in integrating faith and spirituality into the healing process. Always a science-minded person, Dr. Welshofer became interested in medicine after a severe car accident left a close friend paralyzed from the waist down. (2:17) After his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation, he regularly dedicated his time to medical mission trips, where he served in communities that lacked health care. Wanting to give back and serve others, Dr. John Welshofer traveled with the Bless Back Worldwide (https://blessbackworldwide.org/) organization to Haiti and Nicaragua to provide care for underserved communities. For Dr. Welshofer, this experience gave him perspective on how fortunate he was to live in the United States. “[I]t makes you very appreciative of what you have, but also sort of stokes the fires of trying to help others beyond just your own comfort zone.” (6:05) While Dr. Welshofer encountered some truly devastating cases, the positive metamorphosis he observed over the course of return trips showed him the power of the human spirit to make the most amazing things out of the most horrendous circumstances. (7:21) Dr. Lakhia and Dr. Welshofer go on to explore the weighty question of whether doctors should discuss religious or spiritual beliefs with patients. Dr. Welshofer avoids spiritual questions, instead opting to approach the topic with subtlety. “I don’t really overtly do spiritual histories…I more just try to provide hope for people that don’t seem to have hope when day-to-day they’re going through significant difficulties. (11:52) While a Doctor should avoid imposing their beliefs on patients, Dr. Welshofer encourages physicians to speak to their patients about their spiritual connections using open-ended questions, as it can help them maintain hope in desperate times, “don’t be afraid to ask a question, if it’s a benign question, you’re not forcing anything, just…how are you doing emotionally and spiritually with your problems?” (21:25) Having treated thousands of patients in his career, Dr. Welshofer has identified two types of doctors, “You have doctors who treat the problems people have, and then you have doctors who treat people that have problems. If you're a problem treater, you get burned out. Because if all day long, you see 30, 40 patients…all day long it’s people bringing problems. As opposed to, if you're a people treater, then you get to know the patient and then the patient becomes personal to you. So, it's no longer ‘I'm treating the disc problem that Nancy has, I'm treating Nancy that has a disc problem,’ and there's a huge difference.
