Waterway runs near Route 9 projects A mining company's proposal to build a cement plant on Route 9 just north of Philipstown is drawing concerns about risks to Clove Creek and the aquifer beneath it, which supplies drinking water to several municipalities. Ted Warren, public policy manager with the Hudson Highlands Land Trust, joined Philipstown residents in expressing reservations to the Fishkill Planning Board during a May 8 public hearing. Century Aggregate wants to add the 8,050-square-foot plant to its 310-acre property at 107 Route 9, as well as 11 parking spaces, a well to supply 10,000 gallons of water daily and an on-site septic system. The portion of the property was formerly occupied by the Snow Valley Campground. The plant would operate from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 6 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, the firm said. Vehicles would use an existing bridge over Clove Creek, a protected waterway that snakes through the property. Along with concerns from residents about truck traffic, noise and dust, and endangered and threatened wildlife such as the timber rattlesnake, Warren said newly paved surfaces risk sending contaminated runoff into the creek, to the detriment of water quality and fish. "Given the increase in extreme precipitation events that we are facing these days, and the fact that the proposed plan is located at the base of steep slopes, the potential for storms to overwhelm the proposed containment and drainage systems during heavy precipitation events should be closely examined," he said. Century Aggregate's daily withdrawal of 10,000 gallons of water could also affect the creek and its underlying aquifer, said Warren. The aquifer parallels Route 9 from East Mountain Road South to the town border with Fishkill. Its groundwater feeds private wells that supply residents and businesses along Route 9, the towns of Fishkill and Wappinger, the Village of Fishkill and Beacon. "The dust and the pollution that's going to come from the operating of that plant is going to definitely have an impact on the environment, the creek and the living conditions of businesses and houses," Carlos Salcedo, a Philipstown resident whose property on Old Albany Post Road borders the creek, told the Planning Board. Clove Creek's waters bisect the front and back parts of another property where a proposed project is raising concerns: 3070 Route 9, whose owner is seeking Planning Board approval to convert the former Automar into a gas station with a convenience store and Dunkin'. Clove Creek flows north toward Fishkill about 50 yards from the front of the property. The owner, Misti's Properties 3070, notified the Philipstown Conservation Board in March that it had decided to revise its proposal. An engineer for Misti's told the board that the owner found "substantial environmental impacts - a lot of earthwork" and other conditions that would make it difficult to construct a planned office building and solar farm. Andy Galler, chair of the Conservation Board, said on Tuesday (May 13) that the previous owner used fill and allowed old vehicles and other debris to accumulate within the 100-foot protective buffer required for watercourses and wetlands. The abandoned vehicles have been cleared, he said, but the fill remains, along with a bridge connecting the front and back sections of the property. The bridge is "not ideal" because it constricts the creek's flow, he said, and could spur a blockage from debris carried during heavy rainstorms. "The ideal situation would be, if somebody is going to develop the front part of the property, that hopefully the giveback is that there is some remediation to put back a flood plain area that would be natural and native," said Galler. Despite continued industrial development along Route 9, the creek is "amazingly intact" and rated by the state Department of Environmental Conservation at "just about the highest standard" for water quality and trout habitat, he said. "It runs clear," said Galler.
Plaque and tartar are biofilms, which can be described as a protective shield against the immune system in your mouth. Biofilms are produced by a microbe called Streptococcus mutans, which also causes cavities. Surprisingly, this microbe has been found in other parts of the body, including the valves of the heart and the plaque in your arteries. Sugar consumption is one of the leading causes of tartar, but consuming sugar with starch is even worse! This can form a glue that sticks to your teeth. You must stop eating starch and sugar to prevent plaque and tartar from forming. To make a natural toothpaste that can effectively remove plaque, combine the following:•1/2 teaspoon 3% hydrogen peroxide, food-grade•1/2 teaspoon baking soda•3 drops of clove oil •1/2 teaspoon microcrystalline hydroxyapatite Combine 3 teaspoons of water with this mixture and brush your teeth with the mixture once daily. Hydrogen peroxide helps break down biofilms and whiten teeth. Baking soda has mild abrasive properties to clean teeth and alkalize the mouth. Clove oil is the best essential oil for oral health. It breaks down tartar and can even help decrease oral pain. Microcrystalline hydroxyapatite can enter the small crevices of the teeth and remineralize the bone tissue. It also prevents acid from breaking down the tooth. You can also chew certain types of gum that can help repopulate the friendly bacteria in the mouth and protect you against the formation of biofilms. Friendly bacteria in your mouth can help prevent tartar, bad breath, and cavities. Grass-fed butter is one of the healthiest foods for teeth. It's a potent source of vitamin K2, which pushes the calcium in your body into your bones. Butter also contains vitamin A, which strengthens your enamel, and butyrate, which supports the brain and colon.

Wheatgrass has antibacterial properties, which offer both short-term and long-term benefits while preventing tooth decay and pain. Garlic kills harmful bacteria and works as a pain reliever. Saltwater is a natural disinfectant, and also an easy and effective remedy to cure a toothache. Onion contains phytochemicals that target the germs responsible for the infection and gives you a break from the pain. Music: Down with Paradise - Norma Rockwell https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/... TIMESTAMPS Cold Compress 0:39 Peppermint tea 1:17 Hydrogen peroxide 1:57 Clove or Clove Oil 2:26 Guava Leaves 3:17 Thyme 3:47 Wheatgrass 4:40 Garlic 5:23 Salt water rinse 6:07 Onion 6:42 Bonus: Applying acupressure 7:22 SUMMARY -Use an ice pack or put ice in a plastic bag and wrap it with a thin cloth, place this on the aching tooth for 15 minutes to numb the nerves. -Add 1 teaspoon of dried peppermint leaves to a cup of boiling water and let it brew for 20 minutes. Then, use the mixture to rinse your mouth. -Mix 3% hydrogen peroxide with equal parts water. Do not swallow it. Once you spit it out, make sure to rinse your mouth with pure water a few times. -In a pinch, use a small amount of powdered clove on the tooth or chew the whole clove a little to release its oil. Also, you can use a tiny amount of clove oil, about 2 drops, and place it on the affected area until the pain subsides. -Either simply chew a leaf or two until the juice starts working on the affected tooth. Or, place few guava leaves in boiling water, allow the liquid to cool to a warm temperature, and then add a sprinkle of sea salt. Use this solution as a mouthwash. -Mix a few drops of thyme essential oil with water on a cotton ball. Once the oil is diluted, apply the cotton ball to the aching area. -For best results chew wheatgrass directly or use its juice as a mouthwash. -The best approach to using garlic as a toothache remedy is to either make a paste of it and place it on the affected area or chew it slowly. -Mix 1/2 tsp of salt into a glass of warm water and use it as a mouthwash. It also prevents swelling and cleans the area around the toothache. -Cut off a piece of onion and chew it on the side of your mouth that is in pain. This allows the juice from the onion to penetrate your tooth. -Press and hold the point behind your outer ankle bone for about a minute with your fingertip. You can also try to press the point between the base of your thumb and your index finger on the back of your hand with the thumb of the other hand. Both should help you feel better. But when she receives a letter from a women's prison in California, her past comes screeching into the present, entangling her in a dangerous game with memory and the people she thought she had outrun. Today I talked to Chelsea Biker about her novel Madwoman (Little, Brown, 2024). Clove has gone to extremes to keep her past a secret. Thanks to her lies, she's landed the life of her dreams, complete with a safe husband and two adoring children who will never know the terror that was routine in her own childhood. If her buried anxiety threatens to breach the surface, Clove (if that is really her name) focuses on finding the right supplement, the right gratitude meditation. But when she receives a letter from a women's prison in California, her past comes screeching into the present, entangling her in a dangerous game with memory and the people she thought she had outrun. As we race between her precarious present-day life in Portland, Oregon and her childhood in a Waikiki high-rise with her mother and father, Clove is forced to finally unravel the defining day of her life. How did she survive that day, and what will it take to end the cycle of violence? Will the truth undo her, or could it ultimately save her? Chelsea Bieker is the author of the debut novel GODSHOT which was longlisted for The Center For Fiction's First Novel Prize, named a Barnes and Noble Pick of the Month, and was a national indie bestseller. Her story collection, HEARTBROKE won the California Book Award and was a New York Times “Best California Book of 2022” and an NPR Best Book of the Year. Her writing has appeared in The Paris Review, Granta, The Cut, Wall Street Journal, McSweeney's, and others. She is the recipient of a Rona Jaffe Writers' Award, as well as residencies from MacDowell and Tin House. Raised in Hawai'i and California, she now lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and two children. Recommended Books: Kimberly King Parsons, We Were the Universe Lindsay Hunter, Hot Springs Drive Gina Maria Balibrera, Volcano Daughters Chris Holmes is Chair of Literatures in English and Associate Professor at Ithaca College. The Bruderhof is a worldwide community of 3,000 Christians who, inspired by the early church, share their money and possessions, and practice "full-time discipleship," working, dining, and singing together. Perhaps you've bumped into one of their members out in the world (women can be identified by their conservative dress, reminiscent of Amish or colonial attire). Here in the Catskills is a sizable community of 240 residents, in Greene County's Platte Clove. They invited me in for a firsthand look at life in the community, and they graciously answered even my most pointed questions regarding a lifestyle that might seem foreign to others. The Bruderhof aren't reclusive, though, and as the Bible instructs, they are the best kind of neighbors. Join us on this special trip to the Platte Clove Bruderhof community. --- Thanks to this week's sponsors: Briars & Brambles Books, Hanford Mills Museum, and The Mountain Eagle. Shanghai has birthed some very cool storylines, but the patch preview from Riot steals the show. Indonesia is the world's second largest cigarette market: two out of three men smoke, and clove-laced tobacco cigarettes called kretek make up 95 percent of the market. To account for the staggering success of this lethal industry, Kretek Capitalism: Making, Marketing, and Consuming Clove Cigarettes in Indonesia (University of California Press, 2024) moves beyond a focus on the addictive hold of nicotine to examine how kretek manufacturers have adopted global tobacco technologies and enlisted Indonesians to labor on their behalf in fields and factories, at retail outlets and social gatherings, and online. The book charts how Sampoerna, a Philip Morris International subsidiary, uses contracts, competitions, and gender, class, and age hierarchies to extract overtime, shift, seasonal, gig, and unpaid labor from workers, influencers, artists, students, retailers, and consumers. Critically engaging nationalist claims about the commodity's cultural heritage and the jobs it supports, Marina Welker shows how global capitalism has transformed both kretek and the labor required to make and promote it. Marina Welker is Professor of Anthropology at Cornell University and author of Enacting the Corporation: An American Mining Firm in Post-Authoritarian Indonesia. Reighan Gillam is an Associate Professor in the Department of Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies at Dartmouth College. Let's talk about the incredible health benefits of clove. Clove is natural, and there is a lot of interesting research on using it to promote a healthy body. One of the most common ways to use clove is as a numbing agent for a toothache. The essential oil in clove called eugenol produces many benefits. But it also contains a lot of other phytonutrients. You can use clove oil or simply chew and swallow a piece of clove. You can also use clove oil topically on the scalp for fungus or pathogens. It may even help reduce the toxicity created as a byproduct of fungus. Clove may help enhance the effects of an antibiotic, allowing you to use lower amounts of it. Clove oil may also help inhibit H. pylori and improve peptic ulcers, gastritis, indigestion, gas, and bloating. A certain phytonutrient in clove is an MAO inhibitor. MAO inhibitors are used as antidepressants. Clove even has anti-inflammatory effects, and data shows it has anticancer properties. Clove is relatively safe, but consuming too much clove oil could create a toxic effect. You should avoid clove if you are allergic to it or are pregnant or lactating.
