Though the horrors of D-Day live on today through diaries, documentaries, and other records -- few veterans are still alive and able to remember the tragedy that occurred on June 6th, 1944. But there are some, like 98-year-old Jack Gutman, who is still able to recount why honoring the sacrifice and bravery shown on that day 80 years ago is so crucial.   Today, Jack recounts his experience serving as a medic on Omaha Beach at just 18 years old on D-Day -- tending to countless wounded and dead soldiers on the beach. He discusses how this day still stays with him heavily and led him to write, "One Veteran's Journey to Heal the Wounds of War," and what his thoughts are on the current state of America.   Follow Martha on X: @MarthaMacCallum Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of Change It Up Radio, my Dad, Jack Gutman, and his best friend from World War II, Jerry Ackerman, join me to talk about their first in-person reunion after being separated for over 75 years, each not knowing if their beloved friend had survived the war… a touching story that has since gone viral, now reaching over 2 million views!   My dad, Jack Gutman, and his best friend, Jerry Ackerman, met at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California, during World War II and were instant buddies who were both from New York and had many things in common. Unfortunately, they were separated when they were assigned different battleships that were en route to the invasion of Okinawa – one of the biggest naval battles of World War II that left thousands dead.   Fast forward to 2022, Jack and Jerry, who are now both 96 years old, have been reunited after a long 75 years of not even knowing if the other was still alive, all thanks to Jerry's son, Peter, and some searching on Google! Many of you met both of these men when we shared their story on Memorial Day of this year. But, a lot has happened since then… a month after our last interview, Jack and Jerry finally got to see each other again in person!   In this episode, they reminisce about fond old memories and their fast-growing friendship during World War II and share their experience of being reunited for the first time in over 7 decades at Camp Pendleton, where it all began for them. This beautiful love story about two best friends reuniting after thinking that they'd never see each other again has since gone viral online, warming many people's hearts, helping them during hard times, and reminding us all that nothing in this world is more important or more powerful than love.   To Learn More About the Show, Visit: www.ChangeItUpRadio.com

In this episode of Change It Up Radio, we're talking about the reunion of two Navy Veterans who were best friends in World War II and had lost connection with one another for 75 years.   Today, we live in a world with social media, cell phones, and the internet, where it's very easy to reconnect with an old friend or check in with someone we may have lost contact with over the years. But, it wasn't always so easy, especially 75 years ago, for two Navy buddies that got separated and were left wondering what happened to their dear friend over the years.   My dad, Jack Gutman, and his best friend, Jerry Ackerman, met at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California during World War II, and were instant buddies who were both from New York and had a lot of things in common. They formed a club called "the 3 jays" with another friend, Joe Gagliardi, who had also become a part of their group. Unfortunately, they were all eventually reassigned. Jack and Jerry were assigned to the USS Cullman, a troop transport, and they lost contact with Joe. Jack ended up being transferred to another ship, and that was the end of a very beautiful friendship.   For 75 years, they wondered where the other was, how the other was, and if the other was even still alive. They both went about life, going to school, falling in love, and raising their families. Fast forward to 2022, Jack and Jerry, who are now both 96 years old, have finally been reunited, all thanks to Jerry's son, Peter, and a search on Google!   In this episode, they reminisce about fond old memories and their fast-growing friendship during World War II, share their individual stories about meeting their wives and building their families, and talk about their plans to meet again in person for the first time in over 7 decades!   Jack also shares how his friends Jerry and Joe were both incredibly helpful in his healing journey, even though he never said this to them back then, and he shares that being reunited with Jerry again has served as a form of closure to his post-traumatic stress that he had gone through for 66 years. This is a truly beautiful conversation that you do not want to miss!   To Learn More About the Show, Visit: www.ChangeItUpRadio.com

Join Paula for this special holiday show where she interviews her Dad, Jack Gutman, two days before his 95th birthday!   Jack was born in 1925, back when the world was a very different place. People were lucky if they were making $50 a week, and 10 cents could buy way more than it does today. In his 95 years, Jack has seen a lot of things, including the current pandemic, the likes of which hasn't been seen since 1918.   As one of nine children, Jack survived the poverty of growing up in New York City. He went on to participate in the Normandy Invasion... D-Day, the Invasion of Okinawa, and then endured 66 years of PTSD before getting help from the VA. He received 3 years of therapy with Dylan Bender, which enabled him to get his life back and get free from self-destructive, addictive behaviors.   Today, Jack is free of flashbacks, fear, and failure. Living from his current state of gratitude, he has one goal... to encourage anyone suffering from PTSD to get help.   Too tough to be stopped, and no stranger to miracles, Jack suffered a stroke on October 28 of this year, which left him unable to speak. Fortunately, he was taken to the hospital in time to receive a drug known as the clot-buster, and within an hour, normal speech returned.    Yes, he seems to have much in common with a cat who has 9 lives! Jack’s mission today is to touch lives and help others to find peace and joy. He does this through public speaking, comedy, and through his book, One Veteran's Journey to Heal the Wounds of War, available on Amazon.   To Learn More About the Show, Visit: www.ChangeItUpRadio.com

Today we're talking about healing the painful wounds of war and breaking free from the suffering of post-traumatic stress.   For many people, when they hear the term "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder," or "PTSD," their minds tend to gravitate toward the image of traumatized soldiers returning home from war after witnessing their comrades being seriously injured and killed. But, PTSD not only impacts the lives of our brave veterans; it can also affect any individual that has witnessed or experienced a traumatic event at some point in their life.   A traumatic event can range from a serious car accident or painful breakup to the terrors of a natural disaster or emotionally devastating childhood trauma. The pain from our past can extend beyond the initial moment or time period of that trauma and follow us around throughout the course of our lives, potentially damaging our relationships and disrupting all of our attempts at living a joyful life.   Unfortunately, many people that suffer from PTSD remain silent about their struggle, which can lead to debilitating anxiety, depression, insomnia, addiction, anger, shame, and self-isolation. While healing the pain and traumas of our past can be extremely difficult, as this requires courage and vulnerability to ask for help, it is possible.   Today I’m joined by my Dad and World War II Veteran, Jack Gutman, who at the age of 18 participated in the Normandy Invasion. He shares his painful recollection of what it was like to prepare, participate, and survive one of the most grueling days in human history, discusses his journey of healing the wounds of war after a 66 year-long struggle with PTSD, and also shares his experience with post-traumatic stress after miraculously surviving a recent stroke.   To Learn More About the Show, Visit: www.ChangeItUpRadio.com

Walk Among Heroes is proud to welcome our guest for Episode 15, Mr. Jack Gutman. One of the most inspirational Veterans I know, Mr. Gutman has a very unique perspective on World War II. As a Navy Corpsman (similar to an Army Medic), Mr. Gutman invaded Normandy as part of the D-Day invasion alongside Army soldiers. Several months later, he invaded Okinawa with the Marine Corps. Mr. Gutman is the only Veteran I know who took part in both invasions. I met Mr. Gutman in Normandy last year, and since then, we’ve become great friends. After Mr. Gutman was discharged from the Navy, he battled undiagnosed PTSD for more than 66 years before finally seeking help. In his mid-80’s, Mr. Gutman learned to cope with memories of the traumatic events he experienced during World War II. Although Mr. Gutman will never fully overcome those memories, he made a decision to use his experiences to inspire and assist others. He willingly shares his story, the challenges he experienced, and the path he has taken to overcome those challenges. At age ninety, he decided to publish a book, ‘One Veteran’s Journey to Heal the Wounds of War.’ His book provides an amazing account of Mr. Gutman’s experiences, challenges, and all he has done to overcome those challenges. For those interested, Mr. Gutman’s book can be purchased at:https://www.amazon.com/One-Veterans-Journey-Heal-Wounds/dp/0692648720What an incredible honor to hear Mr. Gutman’s story. Thank you, Mr. Gutman, for inspiring all of us. Thank you as always, Shreyas Ganesh, for donating your time as sound engineer for this podcast.

In this episode of Change It Up Radio, we’re talking about honoring our veterans and healing the painful wounds of war and post-traumatic stress.     We have freedom today because brave individuals have been willing to go to scary, dangerous places and put their lives on the line to fight for our country. Those are the veterans that we honor today and every day.     There are other holidays, like Memorial Day, that honor fallen veterans who fought for their country. But I love the fact that on Veteran's Day, we honor and thank every man and woman - particularly living veterans - who have served the United States in all wars.     My father Jack Gutman, one of the last surviving veterans of the Invasion of Normandy, joins us today to share his painful recollection of the Invasion of Normandy along with his journey of healing the wounds of war after a 66 year-long struggle with PTSD.     He also shares the beautiful healing experience he got to have this past June when he and a group of other veterans made an emotional and life-changing return to Normandy for the 75th anniversary of D-Day.     We Discuss:     - The epidemic of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and suicide in veterans - The events of D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa that changed Jack Gutman’s life forever - Why more veterans are not seeking help or are resistant to mental health support - Reducing the stigma of mental health care in veterans and others experiencing PTSD - How PTSD can affect anyone who’s experienced a significant traumatic event - Helping a veteran to seek counseling and other beneficial mental health treatment  - An emotional and life-changing return to Normandy for the 75th anniversary of D-Day     For the full show notes visit: www.ChangeItUpRadio.com
