Robert F McLean was just 19 years old when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy to do his part in WWII. Invited to join the Navy Seals, he declined and enrolled in the U.S.N. Patrol Torpedo Boat School in Melville, R.I. Upon graduation Bob was assigned to Squadron 30, destined for the European Theatre of Operations. Shortly after midnight on June 6, 1944, his squadron became the outermost fighter convoy of the Normandy Invasion. The largest force ever assembled included his Patrol Torpedo Boat 461, a fighter escort. Bob valiantly participated in the fall of Le Havre, France and received a Bronze Star. He also was awarded a Presidential Citation for his squadron's heroic rescue work in the English Channel during the Battle of the Bulge. He also took part in the liberation of the Channel Islands off the coast of France.Heroes Behind HeadlinesExecutive Producer Ralph PezzulloProduced & Engineered by Mike DawsonMusic provided by ExtremeMusic.com

Dr. David Murphy joins me to talk about some of the many details of Operation Dragoon, the invasion of Southern France following the invasion of Normandy. Often ignored or overlooked because it was overshadowed by the Normandy Invasion, but it is still an important part of this story and it ties in with the next episode which covers the US 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division in Southern France. Chapter 2, Call-Up "When Bill Cheall joined up in April 1939, he could not have imagined the drama, rewards and near continuous action that lay in store. First and foremost a Green Howard (a Northern regiment), as a member of the British Expeditionary Force he saw the sharp end of Hitler's May 1940 Blitzkrieg and was evacuated exhausted from Dunkirk. His next move was to North Africa, courtesy of the Queen Mary, to be part of Monty's 8th Army.  After eventual victory in Tunisia, the Sicily invasion followed. Alongside a number of other battle-hardened units, the Green Howards were then ordered back to England to form the vanguard of the Normandy Invasion. In the fierce fighting that followed the D-Day landing on GOLD Beach, he was wounded and evacuated. His comrade Sergeant Major Stan Hollis, won the only VC to be awarded on 6 June 1944. Once fit, Bill returned to the war zone and he finished the war with the East Lancs as a Regimental Policeman in devastated occupied Germany. For all this he earned seven medals and a wounded-in-action stripe. Bill experienced many adventures during those action-packed years. Unlike too many, he survived to share these with the reader. Told with humility and humour, Fighting Through From Dunkirk to Hamburg is, by any measure, a superb fighting soldier's memoir. Bill passed away peacefully in 1999 following a battle with prostate cancer." In 1943 Ottley published New World A-Coming: Inside Black America, which described life for African Americans in Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s. The book won the Life in America prize and a Peabody Award. Ottley became the national CIO War Relief Committee publicity director in 1943 and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the US Army in 1944. Meanwhile his book was adapted for this radio series over WMCA, which pushed for equal rights and better racial communication. The frequent narrator was boxer and actor Canada Lee. On Sunday June 4th, 1944 at 3PM eastern time, in honor of Harlem Week, New World A' Coming broadcast a story called “Life in the Ghetto” to draw attention to the kind of social plights African Americans had to deal with in New York. Two days after this broadcast the Normandy Invasion began. Roi Ottley would cover that event as well as the hanging of Mussolini the following year.

June 2024    To commemorate the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, we will be releasing 3 special episodes to tell the full story of The Longest Day. This second part is a complete remastering of our original Overlord episode with the addition of much new content. 80 years ago today, more than 150,000 Allied troops were boarding planes, gliders and landing craft as they prepared to invade Fortress Europe in Operation Overlord, the Normandy Invasion. Meanwhile, 200 miles away in the Buckinghamshire countryside the Codebreakers of GC&CS were also ready and waiting.  Naval Section spent the day decrypting German messages and forwarding that vital intelligence to Allied commanders, in many cases only two and a half hours after the German operators had sent them.   Today at Bletchley Park our Archive holds hundreds of these handwritten decrypts and using a selection of these we tell the story of The Longest Day. Our Research Officer, Dr Thomas Cheetham & Research Historian, Dr David Kenyon will be your guides, with the help of 12 of our Veterans' memories from that eventful day. This episode features the following from our Oral History archive: Margaret Bryant Colette Cook Jean Tocher Pat Davies Norah Brierley Eric Dodd Stanley Clegg Kenneth Case Gordon Rosenberg Jimmy Thirsk Aileen Hasdell Pam Harding Many thanks to Dr Ben Thomson for voicing our archival documents. Walter Bingham was born in Germany in 1924. He left his parents' home at age 14 to study, and while he was away, his father was arrested and subsequently murdered by the Nazis. Walter returned to be with his mother, who arranged for him to join a Kindertransport, meant to save the lives of Jewish children by bringing them to England. Children as young as 4 or 5 traveled without any adults watching over them, while Walter was one of the older children. Walter and some of his friends lived on a communal farm called a Kibbutz, mirrored after the Israeli kibbutz model, with the intention of making Aliyah to Israel one day. Instead, Walter was drafted in the British army as an ambulance driver. He fought in many battles, and took part in the Normandy Invasion, for which he received a medal of honor 70 years after the event took place. He interrogated the Nazi foreign minister, Joachim Von Ribbentrop. He also received a military medal on the field from King George VI. The Walter Bingham File 09JAN2024 - PODCAST

2nd LT Loftis was a glider pilot during WW2, and participated in the D-Day invasion. During WW2, glider planes were used to carry ground troops, and sometimes a jeep, into enemy territory. Regular planes dragged these gliders via a rope, which was cut over enemy territory at the release point. The glider kept flying, to hopefully find a clear landing zone behind enemy lines. Since the gliders were flimsy, designed for a single flight, and always sent into enemy territory, flying them was a notoriously dangerous job.  2nd Lieutenant Harry Loftis was one of these brave pilots. He flew many missions, and fought in the Normandy Invasion, Operation Market Garden, and Operation Plunder.  To learn more about glider pilots during World War Two, visit ww2gp.org. The Mother of Normandy Doug Stebleton pt 2 http://www.motherofnormandy.com/ ()June 6, 1944.  Commonly referred to as D-Day – the Normandy Invasion. Every year, more and more of the heroes of that day are passing away. Soon, there will be none. When that day comes, a page will turn in the history books. But to capture the heart and soul of that day, to keep it forever in the forefront of our memories, became a passion of our guest today. Doug Stebleton decided it was time for the world to know some of the people that turned survival into victory. That turned their fears into courage. That turned the sorrow of over 5,000 dead and buried in one small town into a life-long ministry of compassion and to tell the story of many stories, all in order to honor those who gave their all to keep the world free. Doug Stebleton has been working in the entertainment business since 1987. Born and raised in Glasgow, Montana, he came to Hollywood at age 19 and has lived and worked in southern California since then. His expertise is music publishing for film and television. His company owns a catalog of songs that are licensed to film and television studios and to independent productions. Doug is not only a film producer, but an author as well. But it is his love of history that drives him to make films and documentaries that are inspiring, informative and educational – all at the same time. His love and passion for history led Doug to create and produce the film, http://www.motherofnormandy.com/ (“The Mother of Normandy,”) which he has turned into a hard cover book and, recently, an e-book! Praise God! Doug shares how the cemeteries in this town came to be and how the “mayor” of the town started to receive letters from American families wanting information on their fallen soldiers… Simone Renaud became famous when a photograph of her in “Life Magazine” showed her putting flowers on the grave of Brig. General Teddy Roosevelt, Jr.  How did her life change after that was published? In the book, is it Maurice took over staying in contact with relatives of GI's and things like that after his mother passed away? As the soldiers and families of that era pass away, has he noticed a falling off of interest in visitors and inquiries? There was a US Paratrooper that landed on the church steeple in Sainte Mere Eglise, and that Mayor Alexander Renaud and his son stayed at his house when they visited the United States. I bet that was a great reunion. Amen! How did the making of your film and the research for the book affect your perspective of D-Day? Doug, as June 6th is now upon us again, I believe there is a renewed interest, I pray there is a renewed interest, in learning the behind the scenes activities of the heroes and heroines that supported the liberation of France, Europe and ultimately the defeat of Nazi Germany. How has your film been received? I know, when I was a Cavalry Officer, I studied military history – and that has continued to this day. Especially World War II history. I also believe if we do not learn for the lessons of history then we are doomed to repeat history. In that light, how can someone watch your video and purchase your book on http://www.motherofnormandy.com/ (“The Mother of Normandy?”) CONTACT INFORMATION: http://www.motherofnormandy.com/ ()      http://www.motherofnormandy.com/ (www.motherofnormandy.com)
