"I...sometimes I forget that I'm Asian unless I see myself in a mirror." -- Nathan Nowack Read the Transcript: https://app.swellai.com/t/tp_01JEAFSD4KFY07AFGENGAPDN7A EPISODE SUMMARY: In this episode of Unraveling Adoption, I had the pleasure of speaking with Nathan Nowack, a Korean adoptee, professional photographer, and co-host of The Janchi Show. Nathan shared his adoption story, having been adopted from Korea at just five and a half months old and raised in a predominantly white community in Oklahoma. He reflected on his childhood, noting the lack of cultural representation and the challenges of navigating his Asian identity in a world that often sees him as different. We discussed the complexities of transracial adoption, including the impact of his parents' approach to race and culture. Nathan emphasized the importance of understanding and acknowledging one's racial identity, especially in a society that often overlooks these nuances. He shared his experiences with microaggressions and the emotional toll they can take on adoptees, highlighting the need for greater awareness and sensitivity. Nathan also spoke about his involvement with KAAN (Korean American Adoptee Adoptive Family Network) and how connecting with other adoptees has been instrumental in his healing journey. He described the sense of community he found there and the importance of sharing diverse adoption stories, acknowledging that each experience is unique. As a father of three multiple-ethnicity children, Nathan is committed to helping them understand their cultural heritage. He shared how he incorporates Asian traditions and celebrations into their lives, ensuring they have a strong sense of identity. This conversation was rich with insights into the complexities of adoption, identity, and community. I hope listeners find Nathan's story as inspiring and enlightening as I did. Be sure to check out The Janchi Show and connect with Nathan on Instagram for more of his journey and perspectives. Thank you for joining us, and I look forward to our next episode! ===============
Episode Summary: In this week's episode of your favorite Korean Adoptee podcast, the Janchi Boys sit down and reflect on three years of the show, how our lives have changed since the trailer, and how the show (and the adoptee community) has changed our lives.Editor's note: I think we toe the line of conflating friends and fans of the show with the interracial, Asian adoptee community at large. For what it's worth, this was not our intent, and sometimes we fall into the trap of using the two somewhat interchangeably because of the time and nature of how the two entered our lives. We are certainly aware of (and grateful for) our elders in the adoptee space, and don't want it to seem like “the Janchi Show started this community” or that we did anything more than add some voices to the conversation.---// Support the Show!Online at janchishow.com / @janchishowSupport the show at janchishow.com/supportJoin our Facebook Group! janchishow.com/afterpartyWatch our Youtube VideosLeave a voicemail! 972-677-8867Write us a note: janchishow@gmail.comThe Janchi Show Quick BioThe Janchi Show focuses on exploring intersectional identities and current events through the lens of adoption, race, lived experience and more. Episode Notes Today's episode of Let's Grab Coffee is a special show featuring the Conversation Piece podcast with Patrick Armstrong. I'm sitting on the other side of the microphone while Patrick interviews me about my new book, Out of Place: The Lives of Korean Adoptee Immigrants. While I'm normally the one interviewing authors about their books and what they know about the world around us, I wanted to share with you what the experiences of Korean adoptee immigrants tell us about race, family, and belonging. It was an absolute honor to be interviewed by a fellow Korean adoptee and to give you a glimpse into the lives of Korean adoptees. Over 150,000 Korean children have been adopted into U.S. families – typically white families – and while Korean adoption is often heralded as a type of “forever family” evidencing multiculturalism, in Out of Place I examine the policy failures and attitudes about race, immigration, and citizenship that made Korean children adoptable orphans and then later deportable adults. Patrick Armstrong (he/him) is a transracial Asian American adoptee, podcaster, speaker, and community facilitator. He is the host of the award-winning podcast Conversation Piece with Patrick Armstrong, a show about the missing pieces of the conversations we're already having.
